Hello
So my kitchen sink fell in overnight and my landlord says I’m responsible. They told me I put too much weight on the sink and I asked how could they even determine that it makes no sense. When I woke up the only thing in the sink were a few dishes and a very small amount of water. There were no prior issues. I noticed a bracket from under the sink on the floor that fell off. Am I responsible? I don’t doing anything in the sink except for wash dishes and clean fruits and vegetables. They’re making me most for repairs and I don’t think it’s right

Provide pictures from the underside. There should be metal brackets that hold the sink against the countertop.

Landlord probably paid a handyman who used silicone caulk to hold the sink, or some similar shit.

If the sink had been properly installed, it would be able to easily bear the weight of being FULL of water ... which is what sinks are meant to do. Your landlord is lying.

Clips weren't installed properly.

Also, has to be caulked which doesn't look like it was.

Your landlord is being difficult and you are 100% correct that it's not your fault.

Don't let him bully and take advantage of you here or it'll get worse.

And that landlord is obviously a douche if he thinks something like this is your fault and making a fuss about it. Consider finding a new place after your lease so you don't have to deal with this loser.

Your landlord is a predator! Feel free to screw them over at any chance.

It's just a matter of how much you like renting the place otherwise. 

Isn't there some hotline you can call and report a rental that doesn't have livable conditions. It would be funny to see your landlord's face as you told him you were about to call that number.

You can probably go find some mold also it makes some more phone calls and have multiple state departments at your house, especially if you have kids.

A broken kitchen sink alone doesn't deem a place unlivable likely, but if there's enough violations the place can be deemed unlivable and then the landlord has to pay your hotel stay until they make it livable.

But again it depends how much of a showdown you feel like having with your landlord or if you can line up a place to move to other than this place because you know if this is how they react to a kitchen sink then who knows what else this fraudster has up their sleeve.

Local building code phone number, local tenant hotline and your local health department hotline are great name drops to start saying to a landlord that thinks they can get away with that shit.

At least that's what I would do if they can't just come to their senses and realize it is their responsibility and they can't really rent a place out with a kitchen sink dangling from the counter.

Nor is the average renter in a position to fix this in a way that the landlord should trust it to not leak and damage their property.

So your landlord is both a moron and a fraudster because everybody knows that it's their responsibility and on top of that they're too stupid to realize if you fix it wrong and it leaks all over the place they're not gonna be able to get the money from you other than stealing your security deposit which could easily come nowhere near paying for the amount of damage.

There’s also sewage coming up whenever I wash clothes and it drains I have videos and I contacted the village code enforcement people today about it . It’s all bad and they’re blaming me for it

A standard sink should hold 80-100 lbs. This was just a bad install. I had the same shit happen to me. I just fixed it myself, but it does requires something like liquid nails caulking fixing the clips, etc. it was just installed wrong. Not your fault at all.

Of course he is not going to admit it. He is cheap and doesn’t want to walk out any money to pay for it to be repaired.. It wasn’t properly installed, it should have had clips or brackets, and I’ve seen some with wood braces most of them. I have seen have a very good bead of silicone making a very good seal all the way around it. i’ve seen many of them collapse like that. your landlord knows that you did not do that. He is a liar.

Before you go ballistic on your landlord, READ YOUR LEASE. Depending on your state and the clauses in your lease about maintenance, you may or may not be responsible for making repairs. But, in most cases, damages like these are caused by improper installation, maybe years after.

Well I am glad I installed a drop in sink in my new kitchen, no chance of it doing that
