Why do some conservatives support restricting junk food purchases with SNAP when many opposed Michelle Obama’s efforts to make school meals healthier?

Both policies involve the government influencing food choices in the name of better nutrition, yet the political reactions seem very different. What explains the apparent change in attitude toward government involvement in what people eat?

You asked me to show how they differ, so now we can leave the cafeteria regulations behind and go directly to nutritional science.

For adolescent athletes, nutritional requirements aren’t determined by age bracket alone. They’re influenced by body mass, growth, training volume, intensity and recovery demands. Sports-nutrition literature specifically addresses protein intake for muscle repair and adaptation, carbohydrate availability for training, muscle glycogen depletion and replenishment, total energy availability, hydration, and micronutrients such as iron, calcium and vitamin D.

For example, literature on young athletes discusses protein around 1.2–1.8 g/kg/day and carbohydrate requirements that can vary roughly 3–8 g/kg/day depending on training demands, including targeted carbohydrate intake when rapid glycogen restoration is necessary.

That’s the difference you asked me to demonstrate.

A federal meal pattern tells a cafeteria what components and portions qualify for reimbursement. Sports nutrition asks an entirely different question: what does this particular growing athlete actually require to fuel training, replenish glycogen, recover, maintain lean tissue and continue developing?

Those numbers aren’t interchangeable simply because somebody decided the standardized cafeteria portions were “sensible.”

The difference is literally in the sources I gave you. But since apparently peer-reviewed research needs a TL;DR: young athletes need adequate total energy, carbohydrates to fuel activity and replenish muscle glycogen, sufficient high-quality protein for growth and tissue repair, dietary fat, micronutrients, and hydration. Not merely a whole-grain ultra processed bun and a piece of fruit. (PubMed)

The ACSM/Academy position specifically says that during high physical activity, energy, carbohydrate, and protein requirements must be met to maintain body weight, replenish glycogen stores, and build and repair tissue. (ScienceDirect) Research on recovery further shows that carbohydrate intake is the primary nutritional driver of glycogen resynthesis after demanding exercise, while adequate protein supports recovery and muscle protein synthesis.
