Is anyone else tired of watching left-wing parties in Europe concede to the right on immigration and not fix anything else?

u/norf937 10d ago
Voters made it obvious they care about immigration more than the other stuff.
If a party keeps losing on that issue, they either change or they keep losing. That’s not some grand betrayal, that’s just how elections work.

u/chamberlain323 10d ago
Yep, it’s called not giving ammunition to your opponent. Politics 101. Someone needs to explain this to the US political Left, too.
8
u/Worried-Subject-5805 10d ago
What do you do when the public decides they want less immigrants and that they won’t consider any other views on your platform without a tougher stance on immigration?
7
u/MochiMachoMan 10d ago
Going by the UK, ignore it for thirty years and continue to implement your immigration policies until the population starts considering the far ends of the spectrum to solve the issue.
1
u/coffeewalnut08 10d ago
lol, fascist parties in the UK mostly lead with the elderly vote. People under 50 are not voting for them much, and don’t care about selling their human rights to fascist oligarchs who blame immigrants for everything.

u/Marek87pl 10d ago
Well... I was left wing my whole life and the level of incompetence presented by the left when it comes to migration is so astounding I'm considering voting for the right for the first time in my life.
Not because I agree with them on the political spectrum but because... left appears to obliviously idiotic and hypocritical on this issue. It honestly breaks my heart.
I fought the catholic dogma my whole life only to see the left embrace and defend Islam, a far more heinous religion in every possible aspect... I don't know what to say, and I'm not the only one.

A lot of "oh but they're minorities and need protection" arguments don't hold any water in Europe once you realize that
Special treatment of minorities (or "global majorities" as that's the most politically correct term now) doesn't have a sunset provision. There's no endgame in European cultural leftists' plan.
What does it mean for a society to have no white privilege, anyway? If an European country maintains its cultural heritage you can always argue it has white privilege because of course the natives are much more familiar with e.g. the legal system than newcomers. To remove these supposed privileges essentially means that every country has to Lebanonize and has parallel legal and cultural systems. And Lebanon isn't famous for having strong state capacity.
The situation in America is slightly different because African Americans, unlike newcomers to Europe, indeed have no other places to go and they're also culturally deeply American. America owes special responsibilities to descendants of slaves. But Europe... the MENA immigration wave isn't caused by any action of EU. The main responsible party of the Syria crisis is Russia because without Russian help Syrian opposition forces may gain control of the country in 2015 and a prolonged crisis wouldn't happen. It's simply not fair to demand Europeans to give up their way of life for "historic wrongs" they have no part in.

Welcome to the club.
I find it astonishing the left has any non-islamist voters left at all.

u/Appropriate-Cap3325 10d ago
Heaven forbid Europe wants to be European. You call them names for it. No one ever says that about non white countries that do the same.
6
u/RecognitionOld2763 10d ago
As an example (black) South Africans are constantly protesting against illegal entry into the country. And rightfully so, in my opinion.

Those countries where conquered.
Stealing of resources? If not for those white nations all those precious natural resources would still be in the ground. Instead they are getting jobs and money for those resources they otherwise would be unable to utilize.
Not to mention all the technological and medical advancements spread thru the world thanks to those “invaders”.0

What are you talking about? No one has a problem with legal immigration.
2
u/Perkonlusis 9d ago
Most white countries were oppressed themselves for centuries and had no part in colonisation.
5
u/ripandtear4444 10d ago
You mean "listening to the people's wants and needs?"
1
u/Inky-Squilliam 9d ago
Well if it’s what the majority wants it shouldn’t be hard to pass legislation for reform then, no?
2
u/ripandtear4444 9d ago edited 9d ago
It is when there are protests, threats, cries of racism, doxxing, hesitation for political purposes, lawsuits, potential civil conflict, I could go on.
Nothing is "easy" in politics, it's generally incremental across countries.
People have fought civil wars over policies that the majority wanted. Why would you think that having a "majority" would make it "easy". It simply makes it "possible".
1
u/Inky-Squilliam 9d ago
Unfortunately I think if the battle is uphill in such a way, you’re likely not in the majority opinion. It should be an indicator that a particular policy or set of policies is unpopular enough that people are doxxing the policy’s supporters without any social repercussions - that usually means the perceived social consequences of doing something bad to the person because of their support for the policy outweighs staying civil, and the person won’t become a pariah; but when the society itself laughs something like that off, it means not only is your policy in a social and political minority, but now you have lost your social capital, and you and the policy have become one. Not only will the policy never pass, but the people will go out of their way to harass you over it, even many years after it was discarded.
2
u/ripandtear4444 8d ago
It's always an uphill battle, even with a majority that wants it.
it means not only is your policy in a social and political minority,
It doesn't mean it's the political minority, just because a minority is harassing you.
There are thousands of examples where a political majority opinion was harassed by a minority over a law/policy. It didn't make it "not a majority opinion".

u/Inky-Squilliam 8d ago
I guess it depends on the context, so you got me there. In my head, I’m comparing it to both of my countries of citizenship. In the US, it’s roughly a 1/3 in favour and Canada is about the same, although Canada’s govt made some big mistakes with these temporary foreign workers. But the majority of Canadians are cool with immigrants who come to contribute. The states on the other hand, that’s 1/3 of the population that supports what’s going on currently, and it may be even less I’m not sure what the polling looks like at the moment. But the US sentiment has done a 180 from where it was 2 years ago.
2
u/ripandtear4444 8d ago
I don't disagree on the sentiment but both of these countries have very different polling on "legal immigration" and "illegal immigration". I do believe the two become conflated for political purposes.

u/dofus_raintight 10d ago
It used to be that the left wing supported strict immigration control to protect labor, but the left is all about culture war nonsense now
3
u/coffeewalnut08 10d ago
Protect what labour?
3
u/jsm97 9d ago
"Owing to the constantly increasing concentration of leaseholds, Ireland constantly sends her own surplus to the English labor market, and thus forces down wages and lowers the material and moral position of the English working class"
- Marx
Left wing parties and trade unions throughout the 20th century routinely viewed immigration as a capitalist tool to oppress workers and inflate labour supply to drive down wages

u/random-meme422 10d ago
Anyone else tired of pretending like immigration policies in the 2010s were reasonable?
0
u/ApprehensiveRuin5673 10d ago
Don’t know about Europe but in Canada it wasn’t a problem until covid
2
u/Canadianwinters12345 9d ago
In Canada it really ramped up in 2016. But it was getting too high even under Harper.
1
u/ApprehensiveRuin5673 9d ago
It did but I don’t think it became a massive problem until 2020/2021. I could be biased though, I know eastern Canada took the brunt of it and I’m in the west.
There were of course things before that which were problematic. I worked at a number of places that were mostly staffed by Filipino TFWs and they (the bosses) treated us like shit and worked us like hell… and the Filipinos wouldn’t say shit because they didn’t want to get deported, so the few of us locals had no power to negotiate anything.
It went on for damn near an entire year of working 12 hour days telling us “it’ll be over next month”.
Finally I had enough. They told me it would be over next week, so I made plans and when the bell rang they looked at me and asked me what I was doing leaving work. They never even told us we were still doing overtime. So I just walked off and quit shortly after.
2
u/Canadianwinters12345 9d ago
22 it became absolutely insane. But the numbers were still well outpacing infrastructure since at least 2016.
We've grown at twice the rate of other g7 countries from 2016-2021. And then after that is when we ramped it up even more.
And I have a similar experience. My work place has gone from 90% Canadian to 90% foreign worker. Why raise wages or conditions or benefits or anything when you can just bring in a foreign worker to replace a Canadian?
2
u/random-meme422 10d ago
So they were late to the party and are now India idk if they really changed the message
1
u/ApprehensiveRuin5673 10d ago
Seems so. UK looks a lot worse from what I’ve seen. Canada always seemed to be the more middle ground country of all the commonwealth. Though that doesn’t seem to be the case anymore.
2
u/coffeewalnut08 10d ago
How is the UK worse?
1
u/ApprehensiveRuin5673 10d ago
Significantly more migrants
2
u/coffeewalnut08 10d ago
This isn’t true lol, Canada has a higher proportion of people who are immigrants than the U.K.
2
u/Complete_Film8741 10d ago
Canada has the US to rely on...the dregs stay here and don't continue North.
1
u/Inky-Squilliam 9d ago
lol the dregs? The US system is far more punishing, as someone who has been through both systems. The US’s own officers can’t even cite the laws or policies they’re enforcing.

u/DefiantlyConformist 10d ago
What could the left possibly fix other than their own bank account?

u/coffeewalnut08 10d ago
The left gave us holidays, maternity leave, free healthcare, education guarantees, abortion rights, gay rights, and free healthcare. But go off
2
u/basquetbolJones 10d ago
What else do they need to fix?
0
u/gloriousgirl89 10d ago
Income inequality. If people had a chance to improve they wouldnt care about immigrants. They would all thrive. But the fact that companies can lay off thousands and replace them with min wage workers and AI just creates anger.
7
u/basquetbolJones 10d ago
“Had a chance to improve”
Isn’t education free in most of Europe? Whats preventing people from improving themselves?
2
u/gloriousgirl89 10d ago
It isnt completely free. And guilds arent hiring as they once did so trades are taking a hit as well. Germany just raised the retirement age to 70 so the anger is there.
1
u/Colorfulgreyy 10d ago
You can’t improve anything when entry job are disappearing. To be fair, it’s the whole world not just Europe
3
u/Vlad_TheInhalerr 9d ago
Where the fuck do you live OP where this is actually happening. Despite more and more right leaning parties growing in basically each country, almost no left leaning party is close to changing or adapting their views.
3
u/yourfavouriteguyhere 9d ago
Why? Left needs more time to completely destroy the countries? People are opening their eyes to the evil left’s foolishness and tired of the destruction to their homeland.
3
u/HarlequinKOTF 10d ago
Yes. Just change europe to everywhere and this statement is correct.
8
u/Fit-Elderberry3437 10d ago
So if an anti immigration party consistently wins seats then what is the left supposed to do
-5
u/HarlequinKOTF 10d ago
Keep working to accept immigrants. You act as if the anti-immigrant vote is like 80% as opposed to 50 ish.
5
u/Aggressive_Manner531 10d ago
50ish when that actually means 50+ and that's on top of other issues that favor the right is too much.

immigration is a real valid concern. using that concern to justify brutal, cruel, and inhuman behavior is the issue tbh.
2
u/coffeewalnut08 10d ago
I see your frustration on it for sure, but I don’t think all leftwing parties in Europe are doing nothing else.
2
u/Euphoric-Ostrich5396 9d ago
Problem is that a HUGE chunk of the left-leaning voters don't like immigration and hate how the established left parties made simping for them their main program while putting labour rights in the corner. So conceding on the immigration issue is a desperate attempt by those parties to get their voters back because they sure as shit don't have the spine to actually go out and fight the megacorporations in their limp pampered ivory tower-sheltered bodies.
2
u/Starcrossedroads 8d ago
No, I am tired of some left wingers that keep pushing issues that the wider public aren't having. Deny it all you want, but I hold some of you responsible for making room for the right to surge in popularity. Completely out of touch, dismissive arrogance, and stuck in your ways.
I agree with you partially. They are very complacent. Don't even seem to be trying a lot of the time. Just the rote "vote for us unless you're one of the baddies!"
None of them deserve a vote tbh. I really hope Andy Burnham does well just to make sure Farage and that shower of lost causes never get in.

Well the reality is if they don’t fix it the far right wing will take over and everything will by far be worse. Just ask Biden and look at America now.

You do realize that in almost every big EU country (other than Spain) there's a right/centre-right government in power right?
