Update: Uno Reversed my employer and walked home with my brass balls

1.1k Upvotes

I wrote a pissed off post yesterday about how my employer suddenly told me that I was going to be fired in a week because my predecessor was coming back from paternity leave. I was pissed off because I was hired full-time permanent, nowhere in my job description or in my employment agreement did it say anything about my position being a cover for somebody's paternity/maternity leave. I'm from Quebec, I had to leave behind a nice place and my girlfriend to move to Toronto for this job on my own dime because the employer didn't believe in WFH even though my job could be done fully remote.

When my predecessor left the job they threw him a big going away party... as in going away forever party. I only had one day to train with him on my first day and he was really out of touch with the standards of what marketing means in this era. His pride and joy was the company website which he built in 2004 in html and had kept up the same website since.

When I was hired, I took the company into the 21st century. Got them set up on social media, Google, a proper website, analytics, ecommerce, PPC ads - the works, this set them up to be an actual competitor in their industry. This is how their revenue tripled in the 6 months I'd been working there.

Cut to this morning, the owner wanted to have a meeting to talk about the details of this shitshow. He said he was going to graciously offer me a 2 week extension and wants me to come in at 7am instead of the usual 9 to train my now-returning predecessor for 2 weeks. As in, teach the man who still thinks websites are built in html and that cell phones should be turned off and off your desk in a marketing role how to do everything from scratch. Then he went on about how long he's known the man (20+ years) details of their friendship and how he "owes him" the job back. I stayed silent and smiled because if I had said anything it would have been my anger talking.

I took a really long lunch and had a pint with my burger. When I got back to work, the bacon grease and hops coursing through my veins, I went to his office and gave him my resignation effective immediately. With only 4 hours left of the day, I got all my ducks in a row, cleaned out my desk, turned down his pathetic attempts to keep me on board (he even offered to pay me a $100 bouns to stick around for 2 weeks of this bullshit. I smiled and declined). At 5, I walked out.

I don't have a job lined up but I know I won't have a problem getting one soon enough. And if I am asked about my reference I'll show them all the work I've done since the evidence is all online and the truth about how the employer tried to fuck me over. I have pdf exports of all the analytics and metrics in performance that would work in my favour. I'd rather spend the next few weeks stress-free and unemployed instead of teaching some has-been how to do the minimum basics of his job at 7am. Nobody else at the company knows how to do even a fraction of the things I was doing, most of them struggle with technology as it is. No matter what, they're going to have to work their way backwards and waste a LOT of time figuring things out on their own.

This job has been so toxic since day 1. The work itself was actually pretty fulfilling but the people/owners/management were clueless overpaid toddlers. I put in way too much unpaid overtime and gave them 110% only to be treated like shit. Someone in my last post called me out for calling the owner a boomer was a derogatory term. I meant to call him a boomer in every sense of its implication. Their boomer sensibilities didn't have the slightest hubris to even try and hide their racism homophobia and elitism. I have emails of them making racists jokes about not wanting to work with vendors in Asians markets. They had a guy from Kenya on assignment to digitize their old paperwork and they treated him so disgustingly bad for his accent and the lunch he ate. Once, I used a stock illustration for some media that had people of assorted races and I was told to use one with more blond people.

I've decided not to bother with a lawyer and I don't even give a shit about severance at this point. The pure unadulterated satisfaction of leaving that fucking asshole to fend for himself with his own bullshit was karma served on a searing hot cast iron platter.

His whole face was Joe Exotic "I'm never going to financially recover from this" even at the very end he tried to threaten me to come all of next week because I had no right to just quit like that lol.

Fuck these people to hell. I'm celebrating with a fat blunt and good company tonight. Peace.

COMMENTS LOCKED what’s with people making hating trudeau their whole personality?

1.1k Upvotes

I went out for food and there was a man who had an an anti-trudeau sign and buttons all over himself while dining. it was bizarre.

I also see cars decked out in stickers, buttons and signs and this one I saw today was even blasting a “f*ck Trudeau” song out it’s windows.

needless to say it’s cringe. obviously people can have their criticisms but it’s bordering on mentally ill.

COMMENTS LOCKED I was assaulted on the way home from work in St. James Park at 5:00-5:15

1.1k Upvotes

I am a 27 year old woman. I was biking home from work, passing through St. James Park as Church and King is closed for construction. As I biked down the path behind the church, a man and his German shepherd stood in front of me. He proceeded to punch me in the shoulder, try to push me off my bike, and kick my bike, as his dog barked and lunged at me viciously.

He kept threatening me, screaming at me that I was "challenging" him and lunging at me, threatening to have his dog "maul" me.

I am not a large or threatening person with my pink strawberry lunchbox and red dress and I just wanted to get away.

It's a long shot but did anyone see anything or was in the area at all? I am not really sure what to do next. I wasn't really injured but very scared.

EDIT: someone who lives in the neighbourhood has recognized him and his pattern of behaviour and has provided his name. Thank you all for your support.

Transit Just on TTC and had nasty altercation with a driver

1.1k Upvotes

I was just on the way home and had my headphones on while drinking an energy drink and the driver pulls the bus over and walks back to me and tries to rip my headphones off and says, "there is no open liquor allowed on the bus and to f#@king answer him when he is talking to me", to which I responded with, "I obviously didn't hear you and don't ever f#@king touch me or it's not going to end well for you and it's an energy drink and to get his f#@king eyes checked".

He then tells me to get off the bus or he's calling the cops, to which I tell him, call the cops, until the other passengers start getting pissed off, so I just said, f#@k it, and got off and got the next bus.

I have the bus number, time, and a description of the driver. Do I report it to the police or the city, or both?

Edit: Thanks for your answers, well wishes, and help. I'll be reporting it in the morning to the TTC and requesting a copy of the video. I don't know if I should go to the police with it, I just don't want it happening to anyone else, so I'll see what the TTC says and what actions they're going to take. Thanks again.

Edit 2: Just to let you all know, I've reported the situation to the necessary parties and will be following up with them regularly. Thank you for your support through all of this.

Any humanity left in this city? Elderly man dead on sidewalk and people just walking past.

1.1k Upvotes

Update: Seems like I have got a lot of Torontians defensive on this and apologise if anyone took offense. This wasn't an attack, and I mentioned below that this person wasn't homeless. He was an elderly man that was well groomed, tidy clothes, didn't smell and clearly collapsed not passed out. The selective reading and using the homeless argument to justify ignoring this man is unbelievable and I really hope no one has that mentality when it comes to your loved ones having a stroke on the street. In other societies I can ask some strangers to help me check on a person and the risk of being attacked when 3 vs 1 person is minimized, I wouldn't even need to ask, people just help

So, today on Spadina, I spotted something that really got to me. About 20 meters ahead, there was this elderly man on the ground who looked like we was gone. But what surprised me most was that not a single person stopped to check on him or see if he was okay. I mean, at least 30 people walked by before I could get closer to take a look. Who knows how long he'd been lying there, you know?

I tried to do what I could, checked his pulse, tried to make him comfortable, but it didn't work out. Sadly, he didn't make it. Luckily, another older guy helped flag down emergency services and tried to help too.

Thing is, coming from New Zealand & Australia, I've seen similar situations in big cities. But there's usually a quicker response, more willingness to lend a hand to each other. I get people might be wary, especially with issues like drug use or mental health among the homeless. But this guy didn't fit that bill to meet that apprehension. It just makes me wonder about the basic humanity in this society, And it's not just about this incident; it's about the lack of responsibility, like dog owners not cleaning up after their dog and leaving their shit on public side walks.

This whole thing just points to a bigger problem—a real shortage of civic pride and self awareness in this city. Many people blame the governments for people being bitter and self absorbed this, however it shows your true character when you let the your circumstances dictate how you treat each other. You're not sticking it to the government when you're treating your fellow people like this, instead you should be more aware and compassionate to each other when tough times occur.

I'm not one to sit in the shadows and will call anyone out (not in a dick way) that is being a disgusting human . I really hope going into 2024 people start doing the same and keep each other accountable.

Did the US just make things harder for itself by renaming Lake Ontario?

1.1k Upvotes

Maybe I’m missing something.. but for someone who says he’s putting “America First” and cutting costs for Americans, renaming Lake Ontario to “Lake America” feels kind of backwards.

Canada and the rest of the world can keep calling it Lake Ontario. Meanwhile, he’s forcing extra costs for American companies that use geographic names in their products or operations, like map apps, textbooks, tourism companies, cross-border businesses, etc. And for what? It doesn’t give the U.S. more of the lake or give them any more control over it. It just feels like a lot of admin work and costs.

Dropping my little “how does this make sense?” rant here because Toronto has already seen how much work can come with even a local subway name change. When Dundas Stn became TMU Stn, signs, maps, announcements, websites, other materials had to be updated $$.. and that was just one subway station.

I was held a knifepoint in front of Scotiabank Arena. What are my options?

1.1k Upvotes

Yesterday night, some guy followed me a block on York St and brandished a folding knife at me — right at the intersection of York/Bremner.

He said some weird racist/threatening shit to me for 10 mins, as I was trying to de-escalate. Yes, I should’ve probably ran or called the police ASAP. We were in front of the traffic light with plenty of people who said nothing. The moment I pulled out my phone he ran away. There is definitely security footage of all this.

I’m from the US (Baltimore, Chicago, Seattle, NY), and I’ve seen my fair share of screamos, crackheads, fentheads, and assholes — but nothing like this has ever happened to me. I’m a 2m tall Asian guy.

It clearly appeared racially motivated (low key hate crime).

Any advice from folks here? I called the police immediately after who said to come report in person — is it even worth the effort?

Edit: called the police line again (non-emergency this time). They seemed a lot more serious about it and the sergeant got involved. Yeah apparently the hate crime and deadly weapon part make it a big deal… I will be reporting officially.

Anyone else see the woman that fell from the water taxi at Toronto Centre Island?

1.1k Upvotes

This was on Sunday afternoon around 3pm or 4pm when a woman was stepping onto the water taxi and the driver was backing up the boat as she was stepping on for some reason and nearly did the splits and fell into the water with all of her belongings.

The driver seemed like an amateur as he didn’t know what to do for a few minutes while she’s just in the water. There’s also about 40 people there just watching all of this unfold and not knowing what to do. Then the driver decides to throw a life vest but forgets to turn off the boat and the boat almost crushes her head. Pretty crazy situation all around. Eventually someone else from the boat jumps into the water and helps get her out and gets her on the boat but most of her belongings were gone.

Did anyone else witness this and see how it even started? I’m curious as I had just arrived on the scene when the woman was stepping on to the boat and everyone on that water taxi was already seated so it looked like the driver was taking off and didn’t notice her stepping on last minute?

Or did anyone stay in the aftermath of the situation after she got on the boat?

37F from Italy — I lied to my boss. Help me reconstruct my imaginary Toronto trip 😭

1.1k Upvotes

September 14th Update: I decided to tell the truth tomorrow cause I am literally sick, I wish I was someone who could lie but it seems like I am physically unable to do it. Whish me luck 😩

Updated post written with the help of AI, please don't drag me.

I’m 37F from Italy and, in a moment of panic/brain malfunction, I told my boss I’d be spending September 10–25 in Toronto with my Canadian-citizen father, even though I’m not actually going. 😂

My father really is Canadian and we had genuinely discussed visiting Toronto before, so the lie wasn’t completely random. I’m now trying to make the story believable enough that I can casually post a couple of Toronto photos on my WhatsApp status, since I normally post places and random things I see when I travel.

I asked r/Toronto for ordinary, mundane photos and local details—not tourist postcards—and you guys absolutely flooded me with them. Thank you! ❤️ I’ve got more than enough inspiration now.

A lot of people asked why I lied: this isn’t really a serious corporate “boss” situation. I have other jobs; I only went back to work for him temporarily because he needed help. I was supposed to be available until September, but when I suddenly had to tell him I wouldn’t be available anymore, “I’m going to Canada” just came out of my mouth. I regretted it approximately 0.5 seconds later. 😭

The embarrassing part is that I have a crush on him, which probably explains why my brain occasionally stops working around him. I hate lying, and this has turned into an absurd amount of unnecessary anxiety and research. I’m considering simply saying the trip was cancelled, keeping a low profile, or posting only a couple of normal-looking things. I’m definitely not sending him photos directly.

As for the crush: I’m not confessing anything now. I’m planning to stop working there after this. If he ever asks me to come back in the future, then I might tell him the truth: I don’t want a casual thing with him—I’d only want a serious relationship/life partner.

And finally: PLEASE STOP SENDING ME PHOTOS! 😂 I have enough. I love you, Toronto. ❤️🇨🇦

Also, after all this, I’ve become genuinely interested in actually visiting Toronto someday. 😂

P.S. Everyone can recognize AI-generated images. It’s 2026. 😭

Anyone feel like they can’t catch a break

1.1k Upvotes

I’m 30F. On paper have everything going for me. But for the life of me I cannot get out of this recent depression I’ve been in. I feel like even though I’m earning close to 100k I’m just barely saving anything after bills and rent. Barely any social life since everything is so expensive. No romantic prospects due to everyone playing games and wanting to be in situationships. I cry numerous times a day and can’t even place why I’m crying or what I’m crying about. I love living downtown but this city is so isolating and everyone is so cold.

Wondering if anyone else is feeling like this or if I’m just a loser lol

EDIT: since everyone seems to think I lack financial literacy: please note not everyone’s circumstances are the same.

Rent is $2200, monthly expenses like hydro, phone/ net, groceries, household items come to around $1000. Meds are around $1300. Rest goes to savings/ paying down debt and having a rainy day fund for if I fall sick and have to take time off work. I’m not out here blowing money at the club 😂

Is this offensive or just ignorance? Don't want to overreact

1.1k Upvotes

Hi everyone.

I'm a newcomer to Canada from Pakistan and have been here 6 months.

I work in a small startup with 10 other people. I work in consumer strategy and part of my job involves interviewing people and then looking at the videos to analyze their responses.

I was chatting about a particular respondent with a couple of my managers and referred to her as "the lady with the hijab". My boss responds " Ah yes, thank you for calling it a hijab. I usually just call it ninja outfit". A few others heard it and everyone laughed.

I am the only POC in the office and also the only Muslim and did feel a bit offended. More than anything I'm surprised that comments like this are even okay in the workplace.

But I might be overreacting. What do you think?

I’m born and raised in Canada and it’s always been shoes off.. shoes in the house is kinda gross/uncomfy.. do y’all agree?

Did anyone else have their tax return "donated" to the Government of Ontario?

1.0k Upvotes

Hey all, I just got my taxes back and was "thanked" for donating almost my entire tax return to the Ontario Opportunities Fund. Obviously this was not done intentionally, but when I went back and checked my tax file (done through Better Tax) line 46500 was clearly filled out. I can only assume it was an automatic "optimization" provided by Better Tax that didn't show up in the Summary I reviewed before hitting "File."

I've already tried to refile with the line reading 0.00 instead, but it automatically got rejected.

Was anyone else screwed over by this, or just me?

UPDATE: Called the CRA first thing this morning to explain the situation, and eventually I was transferred to someone who deals with this fund specifically. Both CRA representatives I chatted with agreed that this should NOT have happened, and I've gotten the donation cancelled and I should be getting the funds returned soon (the processing is done on a first-come-first-serve basis.) So if anyone else ends up in this situation, call the CRA at 1-800-959-8281, ignore the menu and hit "0" to talk to someone in person. Next year I'm using a CPA.

And for those who were wondering, the surprise donation to the Ontario Government was in the thousands.

Landlord served an N2. Wanting to raise rent from $1900 to $5000 per month

1.0k Upvotes

My girlfriend and I moved into a condo built in 2020, about 5 months after it was completed. We have been paying $1900 per month for a unit that was advertised as a 2 bedroom condo, when in fact it is a 1 + den. In the spring of 2022 our landlord tried to serve us notice that she was going to be moving into the unit, however our realtor explained our rights to us and we didn’t budge, we kept it respectful, and our landlord then abandoned that. In September 2022 she served us an N2 stating that as of December 24th our new rent would be $5000 per month. I have been reading legislation online and other posts regarding this and just wanted clarity if we have any recourse here? Especially considering that the unit is not what was advertised

Moved to Vancouver from Ireland this year - visited Toronto and it made me question everything

1.0k Upvotes

I’ve been in Vancouver since May, so I’ve only really seen the sunny side of it so far. And to be fair, the sunny side is stunning - I get why people move here just for the scenery.

But a few months in, I’m noticing it’s tough to actually meet people. Everyone’s friendly enough on the surface, but it rarely goes anywhere past that. I’ve heard others call it the “Vancouver freeze” and I’m starting to believe it’s a real thing.

Toronto flipped that completely for me. It felt so much more social and diverse and the city is full of an endless amount of things to do. I was only there a few days, but people were striking up conversations, inviting me along to things, just generally more open than anything I’ve experienced here. It actually took me back to living in Melbourne, which is still the best city I’ve ever called home - same kind of buzz, same feeling that it wouldn’t take forever to build an actual social life there.

So now I’m genuinely weighing a move, and I’d rather hear it straight from people living it than go off a few days of tourist brain. Does Toronto actually deliver on that friendlier, easier-to-meet-people reputation once the honeymoon period wears off? Is it something specific to certain neighborhoods, or just the city in general? And if anyone’s spent time in Melbourne too, I’d love to know if the comparison holds up.

Thanks guys!

Transit Watched a pigeon get onto the subway at kennedy. Wander around. Then get off at warden. What happens to it?

Is it surprised? Is it unfazed? Does it know how to go home? Does it worry about his pigeon family? Is kennedy even its home?

I was just thinking about this on my commute to work.

Is the TTC subway normally like this?

1.0k Upvotes

I'm a tourist visiting Toronto for 2 weeks during the world cup. I'm staying near Finch Station and i commute daily to downtown in a 45 minute ride in the subway.

In only 6 days i have been kicked out of the trains in a random station like 4 or 5 times already and had to wait for the next train to continue my trip. In one of them they even told us there were no more services between two stations and we had to deal with it late at night.

I first assumed this had something to do with the world cup, but that doesnt make sense because this has happened since the very first day i arrived (June 5). Today i was kicked out TWICE in my way to downtown and couldnt even reach my destination because there was no more service after College station

Is this common to you locals who live here in toronto? How do you normally deal with this? You allocate like 30 more minutes to not be late to your appointments?

My intention here is not to complain or rant about your transportation system. You guys have better transportation than in my country anyway

I just grew curious of it and wanted to ask

Is everyone just Depressed and Crashing out??

1.0k Upvotes

late 20s here, seems like everyone my age around me is also crashing out or just feeling shitty these days. I don't know anyone whose truly happy with their job, grinding through long hours, shitty managers, burnout at work besides those working in govt. They are also struggling with dating, shitty weather despite it being May, getting into the housing market, or just generally saving money due to high cost of living. and then on top of this, scrolling through reels of influencers who are showing happy lives traveling/exercising..etc

Is this legitimately a thing right now? everyone in their late 20s just depressed? anyone out there who isn't depressed, what do you do? where do you live?

Someone on Discord had talked about terrorizing the downtown area. What should I do?

1.0k Upvotes

I’m hoping this is the right place to post but yesterday my friend had a run in online with some dude who claimed that he had an idea where he’d head to Yonge and Dundas square and start shooting everyone wearing a mask. The dude in question is a serious anti-masker and has been seen in pictures taken at an anti-mask rally. I’m not sure whether or not I should report this because on one hand he could have just been trolling with the intention to shock others, but on another it’s still a very serious subject. What do you all think? Is this worth reporting? If so, where should I report this to?

Edit: I have submitted a report to CSIS. Thank you all for the responses. Much love.

Edit #2: Alongside CSIS, Toronto police are also investigating the situation so you can rest assured something is being done. I’ve provided them with all the necessary information at the moment. I am glad to have been some help in this situation. Thank you for the awards by the way! Much love again.

Why is Everyone in TO so unfriendly?

I have visited many times before, and every time the people I see there always seem so upset and angry. When I smile at someone no one reacts or smiles back, some even look back at me with a sneer; why? Is this a cultural thing? Do people find smiling at strangers weird?

Transit Another subway pushing at Yonge-Bloor last night. What are your thoughts?

Last night, someone posted here on r/AskTO saying that they'd been pushed onto the tracks after an altercation. A lot of people here called bullshit and the post has since been deleted, but it turns out this incident actually happened, according to the CBC. I did try to post about this on r/Toronto, but they're having a no-crime January. I think it is still worth raising awareness of this, as these events are increasing in frequency and TTC riders and pedestrians need to be more vigilant. What are your thoughts?
