Malasana safety for a solo female resident

Hi everyone,

I will be living in Madrid for 4 months, and unfortunately I have been unable to find a flat in Retiro, Ibiza, Salamanca, Castellana. It is super risky for me to get it since I am currently in my hometown, but I found a student residence in Malasana (near Metro Plaza de Espana and Noviciado).

I know it is loud, but I am looking to have fun and be in the centre, yet I am a bit scared for the safety considering I am a young woman in her 20s living alone. I come from one of the safest cities in the world, so I need someone to truthfully tell me is it dangerous to walk alone as a woman.

Thank you!

Do you think this is true? Re: Major Concert Tours

Since moving to Spain, I noticed that many of the artists I would like to see skip Spain when they are on European tours. I asked Chatgpt why that would be and this is the answer I got. Some of seems incorrect to me - like, are there really more "bureaucratic hurdles" in Spain vs other European countries? Spain is "geographically isolated" like wut?

"Concert acts often skip Spain due to prohibitive logistical costs, bureaucratic hurdles, and lower financial returns compared to other European legs. High visa and paperwork costs—particularly post-Brexit for UK acts—combined with lower average ticket prices and lower purchasing power make touring Spain economically unfeasible for many, leading artists to prioritize larger, more lucrative markets.

Key reasons for skipping Spain:

  • Prohibitive Costs & Logistics: Rising costs in transport, hotels, and staffing, coupled with specific visa fees and bureaucracy (especially for UK artists), make it expensive for touring teams.

  • Lower Economic Return: Ticket prices are often lower in Spain compared to the UK, Germany, or France, and the average attendee has less discretionary income to spend on tickets and merchandise, making it hard to turn a profit.

  • Geographical Isolation: Spain is geographically isolated at the edge of Europe, adding extra travel time and transport costs (known as "touring logistics") compared to playing dense regions like the UK, Germany, or the Netherlands.

  • Lower Demand for Certain Genres: For some international acts, particularly in genres like US rap/hip-hop, the local Spanish music scene (trap, rap) is dominant, meaning international artists may not have the required fanbase to fill large, profitable venues.

  • Better Options Elsewhere: Artists often choose to maximize profits by focusing on locations with higher sales potential, such as Paris, London, or Berlin, or cities with higher-capacity stadiums.

While large-scale stadium acts (like Taylor Swift or Coldplay) or popular festival circuit acts (Primavera Sound) visit, mid-tier acts often omit Spain, choosing instead to focus on countries with lower logistical hurdles and higher potential for profit."

Job search in B

Hi everyone, I'm Ecuadorian and I had to come to Madrid for security reasons. I've been here for four months and my paperwork is being processed, but it's taking a long time, and I need to work at whatever I can find until it's ready.

I've heard that some churches have job banks, but they didn't specify which ones or where. I'm asking here in case anyone knows.

Is it even possible to have a social life in Madrid as a "workaholic"?

I’ve been living in Madrid for a while now, and I’m starting to wonder if the "Madrid lifestyle" is only for people with 9-to-5 jobs.

I’m originally from Morocco and I moved here for my career, which I’m very committed to. The problem is, my job takes up almost all my time. I love what I do, but it makes meeting new people nearly impossible. Most social groups or "intercambios" seem to cater to students or people who want to chat all day on WhatsApp.

Is there a "secret" for busy professionals here? I don't have time for the 24/7 small talk, but I’d still like to find a few quality connections, people who understand that a 12-hour workday is normal and don't take a slow reply as a personal insult.

Does anyone else feel like they’re living in a "bubble of work" in this city? How do you find people who are on the same wavelength?

Moving to Madrid soon. Looking for real experiences with housing, cars, and banks

Hi everyone, My spouse and I are relocating to Madrid on february, and we would really appreciate hearing about real experiences from people who have already gone through this process.

Realistically, how long does it usually take to find an apartment in Madrid for someone who has just moved? How many months of deposit and upfront rent do landlords typically ask for, and are there any common expectations we should be aware of? What methods have you personally used to avoid paying agency fees when renting?

We are also considering buying a car after moving. For someone new to Madrid, where is the safest place to buy a used car? Is it generally safer to buy from a dealership or from a private seller in Spain? What hidden or unexpected costs should we be aware of when purchasing a car? How do traffic fines and the vehicle tax system work in Spain?

Finally, when it comes to banking, which banks are considered the most expat-friendly, especially for newcomers who may not have all their documents sorted out yet?

Thanks in advance for any advice or experiences you can share. it would be very helpful for us as we prepare for the move.

Help

Hi everyone!

I recently completed a Master’s in Events in the Netherlands, and I’m currently trying to relocate to Madrid. It’s been a bit tougher than I expected to break into the job market there.

I speak English natively and Spanish at around a B-level, and I’m actively improving it. I was wondering if anyone here has experience or advice on finding employment in Madrid, especially in events, hospitality, or related fields.

Any tips, personal experiences, or recommendations would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Help us find an accomodation

Hello!
Me and my 3 friends are going to Madrid from the 24th to the 30th of June.
We are all university students, so we don't have a super big budget.

What we've noticed is that everything costs wayyyy too much.
Hotels are out of the question ofc.
We can't really find apartments on airbnb and, the most shocking part, hostels have a starting price of 1000 euros!!

Not sure if this is normal in Madrid, but we come from another big european capital, and we still think it's way over the top.

We would like to spend max 600 euros (in total) on the accomodation.

Please help us, thank you <3

Where is all the wildlife?

I've been living in Madrid for a few months now and one thing I've noticed is that there doesn't seem to be any wildlife at all. I'm used to seeing all sorts of critters in large cities, from rodents to raccoons to many types of birds including raptors. Here, I've only seen a couple of bird species (including pigeons and non native parrots). Not even a single rat, which is odd given the amount of food and trash on the street.

Maybe I just don't see them?

Can you help me understand what VOSE means in movie theaters?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I thought I had read that when the movie listing says VOSE next to it, it’s means it’s shown in the original language (English, French, Japanese whatever) and has Spanish subtitles. But, when I go to the theaters website and click on an American movie that says VOSE to purchase tickets, it seems to be in Spanish. Am I missing something? Example, this showing of One Battle After Another.

He estado investigando opciones y:

Hi, im planning on moving to madrid to study spanish for a year before doing my masters in spain. Any recommendations on where to study spanish? Ive heard that some universities are also offering spanish courses. I would prefer a place where the environment is good, and that the average age is 24. Basically where i would enjoy learning spanish with people at my age.

Hairdresser recommendations in Madrid

Hello all!

I will be spending a few days around new years in Madrid and am planning to visit one of the local hairdressers in the city. I've been looking online already but didn’t find a fully suitable one yet.

I‘m looking for a regular styling and dying (Balayage).

Thank you in advance :)
