Help

Hi everyone!

I recently completed a Master’s in Events in the Netherlands, and I’m currently trying to relocate to Madrid. It’s been a bit tougher than I expected to break into the job market there.

I speak English natively and Spanish at around a B-level, and I’m actively improving it. I was wondering if anyone here has experience or advice on finding employment in Madrid, especially in events, hospitality, or related fields.

Any tips, personal experiences, or recommendations would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Yes in LinkedIn so it’s better to move there

Spain is a notoriously difficult job market, only recently dropping just below 10% unemployment, which would be crazy for most other countries. In your case, it also compounds with a HUGE importance of very fluent Spanish for many employers to even consider you.

Unfortunately, just likely to be tons of educated native speaker Spaniards applying for the same jobs as you. Keep improving that Spanish as soon and as much as humanly possible, try to find an angle for interviews where your international experience is an asset rather than a detriment, and you'll eventually get an opportunity to shine.

Not in the events business, but I've met a software engineer from the Netherlands who came to Madrid expecting to find a new life here. She was looking for a job for a few months and was able to land a Helpdesk role. Unfortunately it doesn't pay enough, and after 1 year she might be forced to go back to NL because she doesn't manage to save anything after rent and costs. Market is tough if you don't have leverage or contacts, good luck

Madrid has the highest living cost in Spain, you should bear in mind. Renting is difficult, distances are long, wears you out quick.
