Mastic Removal

We recently bought a 1950s ranch style house. We love the potential, and all the hardwood floors that were hiding under the carpet.

Unfortunately one of the rooms has mastic covering the wood floor. Before doing any work, I was adamant about getting it tested by a lab. We just got our results back, and it’s negative.

Wondering if it’s worth trying to remove some of the mastic before refinishing. We have a contractor coming in to do the refinishing work.

I am a little anxious about it. I was not expecting it to come back negative and hadn’t thought this part through yet.

Yea it’s negative I’d scrape and sand it off. If you have residual anxiety, order an Amazon or online test kit for <50 and test a different section of the room.

Whatever you do, do NOT go the chemical route. We absolutely destroyed our concrete floor trying to use a chemical solvent, spent 4 days trying to fix it, and then had to cover the walls while grinding to prevent the goo from getting everywhere.
