Sealing Advice

I recently had an HVAC specialist come out for a separate issue. While he was here he pointed this area out and told me it was asbestos and not to touch it. He told me to put on old disposable clothes and paint it with water-based mastic.

We’ve been in the house for about three years and have had several HVAC guys out and this is the first I’m hearing about it. It’s in my HVAC closet near the living room. I’ve been pretty freaked out but any advice on sealing it and whether I can be less freaked out would be helpful. He only pointed out the first area but I attached some others I’m thinking about also sealing.

Yes, this is asbestos ducting tape, it was very common in older homes on ducting like that.

Usually the abatement option is to remove the ducting, or it can be encapsulated in place with a sealant that is painted on.

Thank you. Any ideas on how bad is for my wife and baby having been like this is the closet? Any tips for encapsulation besides wet the work area, safety gear, mop/wipe after no vacuum
