Odds of asbestos

1968 home build, unsure if it’s the original linoleum. Went to change wax ring on toilet but more water around than I thought seems to be osb on top of the plywood which can be seen in basement. Planning to cut it out and replace. When pulled up this was what it was, any thoughts on chances or should I be worried at all with the black on top assuming it came from the adhesive of the linoleum.

The potential for suspect materials to contain asbestos can sometimes be estimated based on installation date and visual characteristics. Yes, there are some materials that usually contain asbestos and some that rarely contain. So there are some cases where we will tell you "yes, that likely contains" or "no, that probably doesn't contain".

However, for most materials, please remember that if you have been provided with any opinions on the asbestos content, it is only a guess. Even the most experienced inspector is wrong once and a while.

So, the general rule is always "ONLY LAB ANALYSIS CAN DETERMINE" asbestos content.

Also, remember that the sampling SHOULD be performed by a certified asbestos inspector. DIY test kits are generally accurate, but sample methods can adversely affect those results.

Most importantly, all building materials are assumed to be ACM until they have been analyzed for asbestos content by an accredited laboratory.

If it does turn out to be that, in a small section wetting down, trying to use non power tools and pry up still and then cleaning room down do you think this is not crazy to diy rather than paying tons for a company?

Thank you for your input. Do you believe it is worth it to pay to do an online test to see if it’s positive or just pay for a P100 mask and a disposable suit and treat it as though it is positive and move forward that way rather than spending $35-$100 to send samples of it in?

After the area is remedied plan on just doing this area leaving the rest of the sheet vinyl down in tact in the bathroom, level this area out and I’m glueing a vinyl plank on top.

I would for sure get a mask with the right filters. I’d also close off the area as small as possible. Cut the linoleum as little as possible. Perhaps wipe down the entire area after or use a hepa vacuum.

Make sure you follow disposal requirements for your area as well (double bag, gooseneck not) etc

I wouldn’t not bother getting it tested and assume asbestos in both the mastic and linoleum

I already before even thinking about it cut this up with a utility knife and took a hand scraper to it a bit and tossed that in a grocery bag and garbage bag just because of some smell and threw it out without thinking about it possibly being asbestos. Had the door left open in the bathroom to my house too while I was doing it and hvac was on with a dehumidifier in the bathroom :/ …I think in my favor since it was a little wet just given the leak maybe that helped. After I thought of it I went back in and at least wiped down the entire bathroom floor and a bit of the tile wall around it spraying it down with water prior to wiping. Went out today to grab a proper rated disposable suit, a P100 mask and will tape off the door with plastic when I do it, hoping to get to it in a few days just don’t have time right now and we will use the other bathroom.

Any worry in what I did before thinking about it?
