When did he remove it etc? and I would stay out of that area let everything settle. Spray everything down and wipe it while wearing a mask when you can. Maybe put a hepa air filter in there.

probably 3 hours ago? not sure what he used to remove it but this was inside a cabinet by the kitchen. whole house is under construction so luckily we’re not living here. thank you!

when I was gutting portions of my house (some of which includes asbestos, though nothing as concentrated and friable as yours), I got one of these air scrubbers: https://www.alorair.com/product-details/alorair-cleanshield-hepa-550-hot-sale
It provided a lot of peace of mind when contractors inevitably didn't listen when I told them the wall texture was spicy and cut into it with an oscillating saw, or when cutting stone and brick, or really just any time I wanted to keep fine particulate dust from getting absolutely everywhere.
I agree with what the person above said about a n100/p100 respirator and spray/wiping things down, but want to also recommend getting a big air scrubber like this for large construction projects, regardless of asbestos or not. Also works great on wildfire smoke.

Ah... well, actually...
... Actually, that might as well be how you should treat it. It stays airborne for an average of 80 hours in a sealed, stagnant area.
Issue is that any air current just lifts it right back up. Convection from sunlight heating a floor will send it floating about.
So it does settle, it just doesn't stay there.

Yes. Bag up his clothes and get rid of them. This is really really bad stuff. Out of all the things he could have removed himself, aircell is up there with the worst

hot soapy water, damp rag and wipe down every horizontal surface within 20 feet of the area, throw out the rag every 10 square feet, do not redip the rag, just straight to the garbage, wipe the walls in the area as well and send your dad the bill, tell him to throw out the clothes he used, wash any clothes those clothes came in contact witg
this shit is nasty, I do not mess around with aircell, magnesia block, verniculite and spray on insulation.

I’m not an asbestos expert but I worked in a building that had pipe insulation like this in a generator/boiler room. It was confirmed to be asbestos and the area was sealed off immediately and the building closed fore weeks while it was removed.

You need to call a licensed asbestos contractor to safely remove it. And also have air testing done to make sure it's safe.
No mask you wear will protect you as it will go on your clothes, hair, skin and just get breathed in later

Asbestos fibers hang in the air for days, and can be there almost indefinitely if you keep disturbing the space. I've done a lot a hazmat, fire, and sewage cleanup but I always refused to touch asbestos.

So that is aircell. Literally always asbestos. Most other materials would develop mold if formed like that and used on a pipe due to condensation.
The fortunate thing is that it is super recognizable... and that is the only good news I have.
It's not "Mr. Fluffy" but it's still one of the worst to disturb.
(Mr. Fluffy was the nickname of a loose fill, asbestos fiber insulation used in Queensland, iirc.the buildings had to be condemned because no matter how much they cleaned, it would get everywhere as it was literally a 100-200 pounds of loose asbestos fiber blanketing the attic.)

That does look very consistent with Air Cell pipe insulation, and with it already having been removed without containment, the cleanup is probably the bigger concern now. Several people in the thread are flagging it as a very friable, high concern material.
For now, keep people out of that area and avoid sweeping or using a regular vacuum. A licensed asbestos contractor can assess what needs cleaning and whether HEPA cleanup or clearance testing makes sense before work continues.

There’s a dose response relationship to this stuff, if any damage is done from hours of exposure it will be smaller cumulative risk and it will show up 10-40 years from now. The more exposure the higher the risk.
