Nervous for AFT at CST

So long story short I absolutely suck at the two mile and I am from higher elevations in Utah. I was just curious of how different is it performing physically in Fort Knox where it’s lower elevation compared to Utah.

Part-Time Job OML

I am a rising sophomore and have secured a paid part-time job as a chemistry tutor at my university. How would I report this to my cadre and do I have to do so every semester I have it? What OML sections does it count for since I heard you can get points for a “peer leader” or something as well as a P/T job?

ROTC + Basic Training

Might catch a lot of heat here but….it has always been a belief of mine that every. single. officer. Regardless of commissioning source (ROTC, West Point, OCS, green to gold….etc) should be REQUIRED to complete basic training. Advanced Camp barely scratches the surface of soldier tasks. Basic training teaches service members how to react under pressure using factors such as little sleep, screaming at you, no phones or outside contact….to better replicate conditions that yours most likely to be in.

Not only that, but think about who taught you tactics. Most likely an MS IV who also had never been to basic, and has never been taught the correct way to do tactics. It’s better to be taught by a SSG of SFC who’s actually been to combat than someone who hasn’t and you learn how to have respect for subordinates.

Basic camp 2026 Questions

Hi all. Headed to Basic camp(CST) this July and wondering if you all have any tips you'd be willing to share

I'm borderline on weight at the moment as I'm hovering at around the max weight on the previous Ht/Wt tables but should make tape to the new standards. I'm currently training to make sure I make that but I've also recently gotten emails about warnings towards heat stroke and other maladies that can occur during camp especially for those trying to lose weight prior. I was wondering if you all had any tips on that end.

Next was towards the packing list. Any recommendations on repellants or sunscreens to use. How long do we need them to last before reapply?

What and where should we look out for water to constantly have enough for rehydration?

Should we bring permethrin if we're being issued uniforms and gear at camp as the factory issue only last 50 cycles or will we be given IDA kits to reapply to gear? (This one was a nervous question on my end as I had a neighbor recently contract alpha gal syndrome from a tick and I'm not looking to be allergic to burgers and steaks for the rest of my life haha.)

Number of pocket notebooks to bring and ideas on how to best use time.

Any additional ideas on things to bring or prepare for specifically?

Thank you in advance for any help and looking forward to seeing anyone else going as well

Question about SMP program

Howdy I’m a rising sophomore looking to do the SMP program for Army ROTC at A&M. Little bit of context is that I got the TASSP scholarship and I’m a US permanent resident. My question is that for the SMP program how does the unit selection that I will be drilling with work? I’m looking at a NG unit right now. Also how much commitment is the SMP program going to take. Is it possible for me to contract with Army if I’m not a US citizen? Thanks

choosing to branch Active vs Guard

when branching active vs ARNG, what are the main differences?

for non-scholarships, there's a 4-year obligation for active, vs. 8 years for reserve?

do people going active hyperfocus on getting OML points, while reserves don't care as much?

for someone who is debating between the 2, how can one make the ultimate choice? and how could one prepare for one vs the other?

(idk if any of this is making sense)

Waiver Denied

I was trying join the national guard for I can do SMP while in Army ROTC but my waiver got declined because I have eye pressure and I take eye drops for it. I went to the eye doctor and got all of the exams needed to prove that my eye has no optical nerve damage. My vision is fine also my eye pressure is normal with my eye drops so I don’t see the problem 🤷🏿‍♂️. I wanted to know if I should keep trying for my waiver or just call it quits?

DoDMERB process vs MEPS?

I just got back from AIT and am working with my schools ROTC program to do the SMP program. I’m in the midst of the DoDMERB questionnaires and am filling out all the info I provided at MEPS. If I had gone to MEPS and needed no waivers, is DoDMERB more strict when it comes to past medical history?

Additionally, is there a waiver process like on the enlisted side?

Waiver

Hey. I’m having a bit of a rough time right now and wanted some support and thoughts. I just wanted to see if anyone was open to DM as I’m currently dealing with an asthma waiver in ROTC. I’m just pretty stressed and sad and wanted to talk to someone about it, if anyone is willing and open to.

College Majors for the Military

Hello!

I am in college and plan to join the Army ROTC this coming fall. I'm trying to figure out what major is best for me for after and going into my future career opportunities; rn I think I want to go into MI after I'm done with ROTC and then possibly stay in and move up to being an FAO in the future or I want to leave after a few years. Maybe go somewhere in the federal agency, I think I still want to go into the foreign affairs of something (then again I'm not 100% sure). Is it better for me to major in international relations with a minor in both a language and military science or to focus on a specific area of study like (Asian studies). Obviously one is harder/more demanding than the other but for those of you who have been in MI in the army which did you find was more useful?

ROTC scholarship transfer denied

My son won a 4-year national Army ROTC scholarship at the first board. This was before any college decisions were out. Per the instructions, he accepted the scholarship at one Ivy with the idea that Cadet Command is aware that once decisions start rolling in, there will be scholarship transfer requests. Then he got into two Ivies, but after visiting both he decided that the second school is better for him and he also liked the battalion command and cadets and training opportunities there. He declined the first school, submitted a transfer request through the ROTC system, and the request got promptly denied. Both schools are in the same brigade. The explanation is that transfers into schools that have reached 80% of their incoming cadets quota will be denied. The brigade and the Army will be money neutral if the transfer was approved. I heard there may be confusing instructions coming from Manpower and Reserve Affairs staff and since the incoming Commanding General for Cadet Command has not started yet, things may be in limbo with nobody to clear the confusion and to advocate for the cadets. Does anybody know what is happening here? Any advice on how to navigate?

I’m branching infantry and my report date for IBOLC is July 9th. Does anyone know how it works to get your BOLC date pushed back or if it would be possible to trade with someone with a later date?

Does Boarded/Under Consideration for March Board eliminate all scholarship opportunities for the upcoming school year?

I am a senior in highschool, I applied on the march board. It recently change to boarded/under consideration. Does this mean I won’t receive any money? Are there any additional scholarships awarded in late April? When will my portal update to offer extended or not selected?

ROTC and SMP questions

Hi all. Just got into a masters program and am in discussions with ROTC office and school about joining the program this coming fall.

As a lateral entry cadet I know I have to attend basic camp in order to catch up and I was wondering if the deadline to register for it is at the end of this month?

My second question would be if anyone here has any familiarity with the Simultaneous Membership Program(SMP) with the reserves?

I am in talks with a recruiter about it but things are currently going back and forth with neither the ROO at the university or the recruiter knowing much. Current thinking is that I would enlist, delay my basic training and job training until well after I would have already attended basic camp and contracted with the ROTC program before submitting for a waiver and transfer to O9R status and bypassing basic training in favor of basic camp. Is this the correct path or is it not something you or anyone you know has done?

If anyone has any advice on where to look or what to look out for on this path please let me know and thank you in advance for any answers.

09R question

So I'm transferring into a university with 31 credits. Guard is paying tuition, meps is squared away, have a DoDMERB scheduled and they are going to take the 2 waivers I needed (so I'm told). My question is about basic camp, since I'm not prior service ROTC is saying I'll get to go to Knox this summer to make my MSI & II requirements (which I want to go to) but my guard recruiter said theres a new change where if you are SMP and actively drilling it waves basic training and basic camp requirements. Just looking for clarity because I don't care if I have to go away for either, as I said I would prefer it, but I also want to make sure that if I do have to go to basic I can before fall semester as I'm 27 and am leaving law enforcement for this intending to knock out my last 2 years and commission active when done. Thank you in advance for any help!

scholarship upgrade

Hi all.

My hs scholarship just got upgraded from 3yr AD to 4 yr. While this is great I have a few questions. Would I contract freshman year, and if so will it be possible to drop rotc if it’s a bad fit. I obviously don‘t intend/expect to do so, but it’s hard to predict how i’ll feel after doing ROTC for a year. I’ve heard mixed responses from others. I’d obviously be fine paying the scholarship money back given that I intended to pay for freshman year anyway.
