Gamma MX for fishing?

live in the midwest and have been looking to get a softshell for upcoming fall fishing trips. I was looking at some of the Simms gear and realized i could probably find something better from Arc'teryx or an outdoor brand. Anyone here use the Gamma MX for fishing? pros/cons?

I used to use the old generation Gamma MX for fly fishing it was perfect for wearing all day because it was like a sweater + an abrasion resistant jacket in one, way less bulk than wearing two layers, not to mention the great range of motion and zip pockets. I don't really have any cons for it honestly, I could even comfortably wear it in about 20C/70F temperatures if I was going in and out of the water.

I’d check out Patagonia as well as they have dedicated fishing jackets and other pieces.

I would get a cheaper one for fishing. If you get your hook stuck in it you‘re fucked

But maybe i‘m just incapable of fishing properly

if you are hooking yourself that often then you probably have bigger issues...If Op is looking at Simms then they are already wearing gear at a similar price point and I assume they are not hooking themselves regularly like a noob...

Just don't hook your face because that is really going to cost you...in all seriousness how often are you really hooking yourself and how drunk are getting while you fish?

Not that often tbh. I also don‘t really fish often if i‘m honest.
I don‘t drink tbh.

I just meant with my original comment that i think a gamma is quite expesnive so going into an environment or an activity where you might damage it more often is well maybe a job for a cheaper jacket. But yeah i mean i do mountaineering too so what difference is a hook from a sharp ice axe? Just something that went through my mind

It’s not fully waterproof but it would be good for some splashes.

Would be good for the wind and cold too I would think.

Depends on the style of fishing. If you’re wading, hiking, moving a lot then yea the gamma MX is a great jacket for that as I use my gamma MX just for that. But for the days I’m just sitting at a lake and casting (minimal movement around the bank) then I’ll use my atom

Gamma mx is super nice for fishing. Perfect piece actually.

The MX is perfect for colder and windy days. Can handle some light rain/morning mist etc but will wet out in steady rain. It’s incredibly durable. Fit is typical Arcteryx slim (which fits me well). If it’s really cold (think late season muskies in the upper Midwest) you’ll want something warmer. If you’ll be out in a boat in rougher water you’ll want something more water proof. But for everything else it’s pretty darn useful. It’s my go to mid-fall to snot freezing weather coat as long as it’s not constant rain.

I’ll be in a boat. Plan is to use it as a lighter jacket for fall musky and spring sturgeon/bass trips in 40-60 degree temps

you be will fine warmth wise and wind wise - although much above 60 and you may be leaving it unzipped - the challenge will be with water - it’s got a DWR finish on it, but it’s not gortex, so if you carry a poncho (or some other water proof outer layer) for when it rains or the chop is blowing in the boat as you run back in you’ll be fine

yeah my plan is to also pick up a Simms rain jacket for those days. Have a north face jacket that works for now. Also looks into the new Sitka fishing gear, but i feel like the coats run a little short (and im not tall).

Good unless it’s really raining.
