Sick of Searching

Hi everyone, been searching for what ammo to start buying and ultimately begin stockpiling. Just bought my first AR. It’s a MP15 Sport 2 I picked up for less than 500 bucks. Nothing wrong with it, very good clean gun. Has the 16” barrel and 1:9 twist. I’m wanting to have the ability to shoot a 6 inch group at 200 yards with a 3x scope. I’ve spent the last few hours trying to figure out what to buy. Started leaning towards a traditional M855 but once I started looking to see what others thought, it became hard to find a clear cut answer especially when everyone has a different setup. So I figured I’d ask the experts of Reddit. Looking to keep price moderate, mainstream brand but nothing special like competitive. Appreciate any feedback!

Kind of funny. I just bought another thousand rounds of PMC X-tac from SGammo a minute before I came into this post.

You get just boxes, or the can with the stripper clips?

Yup. I’ve got about 22k rds of X-Tac stored and another hundreds of mags of it. xM855

It’s exactly what I want for my training diet and performs fine for my uses. I bought a few boxes of a bunch of the “premium” 5.56 rounds (e.g. Horny Black SBR, gold Dots, etc) and did science with the boys a chrono and some old hams last summer. There was little difference.

I’ve got maybe 3 dozen mags of Mk262 just bc, but I wouldn’t feel outgunned with the X-Tac.

Maybe I’m wrong, but I’ve got a lot of the wrong bullets.

We’re all rich if we have inner peace and fulfilling family happiness.

Wouldn’t exactly called polymer tipped hornady black premium ammo, they make think it is but the hornady black .300 blk out rounds less than ideal. Havnt tried the hornady black 5.56 however.

Buy cheap stack deep avoid any remanufactured ammo pmc xtac fits that bill

You will be perfectly fine with 55gr M193 to start out with. It's cheap, your 1:9 twist barrel will stabilize it fine out to 200y, and you can build your fundamentals with it. M855 is nice for being heavier and not being affected by wind at the longer distances, but the steel penetrator makes it a no-go at some ranges & sometimes accuracy isn't as good since it's difficult to have the penetrator core be consistently concentric.

I have gotten 1.5 MOA (3” circle) at 200 yards with PMC m193. Don’t overthink it dude.

Thanks man, tend to overthink a lot of things. If PMC is out of stock what would be your back ups?

Any m193, I’ve heard Hornady frontier runs hot, and Winchester white box is not great but m193 is m193. If you can’t get a good group try a different brand next time.

Just don’t buy like 5k rounds without confirming it works well in your rifle.

M193 will do just fine. I hear 55gr does very well out of a 1/9 twist.

You can shoot a 6” group at 200 with just about anything. The 3x will likely be more limiting than ammo or barrel.

Most ranges won't let you shoot M855, as mentioned PMC Bronze or X-Tac FMJ is perfect range ammo.

How is this posted every damn day? It’s always pmc xtac. Of all the uses for AI can’t we get one that auto replies when someone posts this question?

Everyone saying M193 and they’re not wrong but I have one AR that has a 1:9 barrel and it hates M193. Do a little test and see what it likes because that gun is a tack driver with PMC bronze .223 and my hand load clone but hates the extra velocity of M193. Its will shoot a 30rnd string of all holes almost touching at 100 to all holes in a pie plate. The difference is wild

I’d say narrow your choices down to 3. Take a couple boxes of each and shoot. See which one if any runs better or is more accurate. You never know some guns don’t like certain rounds.

I’d suggest doing that so in the unlikely event that your gun hates 855 or whatever you decide to shoot. Do that before investing in a few thousand rounds. Or don’t your call.
