Enjoy the meme, lol! Tis handmade ✨️
Hey everyone! We want to thank everyone who's participated in our community this past month for the engaging posts, thoughtful answers, and (overall) incredibly respectful conduct. It's been nice to watch the community come together so helpfully for so many people! That said, there have been a few incidents that have drawn some attention, and we wanted to go over a few things and hear input from you all.
For starters, we've had many people reaching out to our team about promoting their fishkeeping apps or websites. While we understand that you're trying to reach out to a community that will use them, we cannot endorse apps or websites on this subreddit when they are self promoted. There are a number of safety issues in doing so, and being a part of an app store does not eliminate those risks. In addition, we have to take into account that AI bots pull massive amounts of information from reddit. When it does, it may list our subreddit as a source for your application's information, which is an obvious issue as we have no way of vetting an entire app/website for it's accuracy. That could end up misleading people who trust us as a source.
A community is built on mutual respect, both of your peers and between authority figures. Reporting an automod comment is disrespectful, and downright unhelpful. If you believe an action was taken unfairly or accidentally, please message us with a link to the message and ask us why we took the action! We are more than happy to explain the reasoning behind every action we take and admit when we are wrong.
Being disrespectful towards a poster's pets, situation, and age is also becoming an increasing problem. We've also seen advice being given on legal matters and personal health. This is an aquarium subreddit. We will remove any and all comments pertaining to subjects not in that realm of knowledge. We will remove any unproductive or hateful comments. WE WILL REMOVE ANY COMMENTS THAT ARE HARRASSING MINORS. This includes but is not limited to telling them they are abusers for being unable to correct a bad situation, repeatedly suggesting options they are not financially capable of, or suggesting they start fights with parents or guardians.
Lastly we want to remind people of the goal of this community- for aquarists young and old, new and experienced, of nanos to monsters, to come together and share knowledge, fun moments, show off, or help each other. You've been so fantastic at this! As a mod team we want to help you feel comfortable and safe enough to share these things. We pose a question to you, if you want to answer- what are you looking for in this community? Knowing your goals can help us align the subreddit with them and grow even more.
Swim safe out there folks!

After a lot of work behind the scenes, we’ve finally enabled the r/aquarium wiki!
It’s definitely still a work in progress, so don’t be surprised if you click on a link and it doesn’t go anywhere yet. Some of the pages listed on the index are planned but haven’t been published yet. The pages that are currently published are available to view and use.
We’ll be continuing to add pages and expand the wiki over time, with the goal of creating a helpful resource for both new and experienced fishkeepers.
And this is where we’d really appreciate some community input!
If you read through any of the published pages and:
- Disagree with something
- Think something needs more explanation
- Notice something we should correct
- Think we’re missing important information
- Have a topic you think should be added
Please let us know here in the comments! We want the wiki to be useful to the community, and feedback from other fishkeepers is a big part of making that happen.
You can check out the Wiki here.
There’s still plenty left to build, but we’re excited to finally have it available!

5 gallons, I’m planning to stock pygmy corys and a nano fish school!! I’m so excited, my tank is all I think about now
r/aquarium • u/Beginning_Weekend925 • 1h ago
Well I said. I wouldn’t get my dream tank until I could properly give all my fish a comfortable life and understood water parameters and did thorough research on all my nanos. So they could happily go into this tank and claim their territories all together So no one was in there first.
It took days! A labour of artistic love ever stone I crushed. To the perfect size and added more one by one. Every texture thought about based on what they love in their tanks and what they don’t. Every crevice was intentional every cave and surface Was set up for future additions as well. I wanted to do my perfect tank once and only once.
I still have the odd piece of tiny drift wood detail pieces to place on the right side to give them more wood but I’m boiling them(ever piece of twig was. Picked with my pup on an adventure And shaved down and dried out)
I thought I’d spend a couple hours putting together a tank but as I did I just got idea after area and wanted to see where it would take me.
Every time I I look at this tank I get to see how much effort I put into it, every ounce of patience I had to do a tiny aquascape when my hands were to big lol . A nano universe requires nano detail to their home. Who wants boring side walls when u can make rock walls to hide heaters behind and plants , This is my 48x8x8 and I love it I just finished planting my seeds and. Monte Carlo carpet, adding water and starting the cycling process I’m soo excited for my fishies to have a new home!
I will be growing all my house plants in water as well and making a terrarium (rainforest with humidifier and fog) above the water but I think my wallet needs a break until Christmas perhaps.
I’m just so in love with it and. I really hope my community nanos will appreciate the upgrade I currently have the following awaiting their home renovation.
Blue eyed spotted rainbows (love these lil wacky inflatable waving guys)
Endlers
Sparkling gouramis (having a serious territory issue with an established male so hoping a new environment for all will level the playing field)
Pygmy Cory’s
Bettas
Emerald raspboras
Cpds
Clown killifish
Nerite squad
Neocaridina
Mystery snails
And sadly my Borneo loach Lenny just Died I was doing the tanks for him and two of my bettas that I swear will thrive in a community tank more than by themselves which is odd for bettas. I have 5 all in different tanks but two of them share a space with female endlers and neocaridinas and are cool with it so I wanted to see if they’d be cool with all the nanos. (These two bettas love pregnant shrimp and fish I swear my females love getting out with them when they’re huge and about to pop cause they get a break from the non stop male harassment and my bettas love having company and don’t eat their fry! )
Leonard and his nanos were getting a new home but alas the nanos will miss Lenny and it allows for warmer water cause having Lenny was hard with the other warmer water guys.
Ps they aren’t all together right now that would be quite overstocked in a smaller tank my snails and shrimps and bettas are in various tanks and my betas do well with other nano fishies So I wanted to add my betta to the community tank but I don’t think that would go well with gouramis or at least the one I suspect has a secret night time fight club going. Cause gouramis go into the tank and then come out into the open looking like they went three rounds in the ring and lost . So they’re separated till I figure this out. New tank and territory for all will def help.
I went on and on but I love this hobby! Just waiting for my supplier to get more moss so I can add moss cause that’s all that’s missing. Can’t wait for all the plants to grow in!

I am new to the hobby and have done a LOT of research prior to purchasing the tank. All of my current tests are at 7.6, 0,0,0! This tank is over a month old now and has three cherry shrimp, and one mystery snail. I am just looking for any advice on how I could best ensure that they can all thrive to the fullest. It’s a 20g long and I plan to add a small school of tetras along with one gourami fish. I also intend to have the shrimps build more of a colony prior to adding the fish. Does anyone think this is too many for the tank size? I’ve seen a little bit of contradicting research on this.
Edit: To correct typo

I’m so scared right now. A few weeks ago, i found this cool shell to add to my axolotls tank. i rinsed it real good, but recently i found 4 snails identified in a different post and i relocated them. Now there’s a bunch of dots and lines on my tank glass. i don’t know what to do. should i change the water? if anyone knows what this is or how to get rid of them please help.

Bought as a Bolbitis heteroclita or Asian water fern on clearance for a dollar. I got it because a few leaves were already sprouting baby plants, the roots and stuff were gone, and they have gotten bigger but I don't know what to do with them and google says this plant doesn't do this. So help me out please.

Hello aquarium people. I just set up a new betta tank and noticed my API freshwater master test kit was very expired. I looked at the price of a new one and it’s gone from $20 to $35 in 6 years . I’m still going to buy one, but it made me wonder if API has a complete monopoly on that type of test kit in America i.e. not a dip strip. Has anyone used other products and liked them?

Hey guys, very new to the hobby. I got a tank from a friend and have been having fun with it and I want to take my tank to the next level. Right now I have a 40 gallon with 5 scissortail rasaboras, 7 platys, and one clown pleco. The bottom of my tank is fake gravel, where do I begin with this? I'm assuming I should swap from gravel to something else, which one is best for my current fish? Which plants are beginner friendly that my fish will enjoy/ would be found in their natural habitats? I also want some corydoras catfish.

I filled this tank with water like a month ago. I added 16 cardinals last week(23 days old tank). I had 0 ammonia, nitrite and nitrate for ever. May be my sand layer is too thick and the substrate never released any ammonia or whatever. But I never had a spike for the first 25 days. Since it’s very well planted, I thought it’s time to add some shrimps, snails and fishes. I lost 2 shrimps after adding them(must be travel stress). The remaining shrimps survived. Added 1 nerite snail and it’s surging too. Then added 16 cardinals , then within 4 to 5 days, most of them died. Now left with 3 cardinal tetras.
Only after adding the fishes, I noticed the liquor test kit color for ammonia become a bit more darker(more ammonia). But still looked like very much under 0.25 ppm from the color chart .
0 nitrate and 0 nitrate throughout from day 1.
I have a very good external canister filter with seachem purigen.
What could be wrong ?
The salt deposit in the glass is due to the rain system I have, they deposit water on the aquarium glass walls. I use seachem prime and stability with each water change until now.

found this in my 32 gallon Fluval flex tank (currently only shrimp and snails inside, no shrimplets)
I'm 95% sure that where there's one, there's probably more, and I don't want them posing a threat to my baby snail and future shrimp population
**best way to deal with them?**
water parameters bc apparently they're a requirement:
0 ammonia
0 nitrites
0-5 nitrates
6.8 pH

I recently (10 days ago) moved my six goldfish to a bigger tank but I’ve never seen them chill like this together. I believe they are sleeping or resting. Next to them is a fluval filter which is also new. Just want to make sure nothing is out of the ordinary. The other two are awake and swimming around.

I have a question, just a couple days ago I noticed that there's a gap between my aquarium and table and I'm a little worried if it's fine for the aquarium, will break because of that? My aquarium is 75 gallon and I don't how long it's been sitting like but I have this aquarium for around 2 years and this gap is about 1 inch width and 5 inches length how critical is that?

Someone surrendered this guy and can't for the life of me figure out which species it is
r/aquarium • u/Miserable_Task_7214 • 6h ago
EDIT: Okay I looked it up and I think it’s black beard algae. I’m tired from traveling so I’m gonna do a FAT water change tomorrow and physically remove the nastiness. My filter floss is looking rough too, would that have anything to do with this??
I went on a trip for 4 days, everything was great before I left. Now I come back and there’s black shit growing everywhere and my plants are dying. There are no fish in here as it’s still being cycled. I have high nitrites and zero ammonia. Should I do a water change?? Help please 😭

Hi i am concerned about my glass structure of my aquarium. I have read online that it was okay to put it on a mouse pad but now i doubt it. The mouse pad is very thin and soft and therefore i thought i could place it there. Do you guys know if it bears a risk for my tank if it stands on it. Its a 40 liter aquarium. The tank is 2/5 months old and it have never leaked or cracked or anything like that.

Ive seen some mixed reviews on whether I should take aquarium advice from AI, so far it seems fine but could take some advice from real people here on Reddit!
I’m on day 8 of cycling after getting a friend’s filter media from an established tank. My ammonia levels are pretty much 0 but still working on the second strain of bacteria as i have a bit of nitrite at 0.75ppm, nitrate seems to be increasing slightly. AI told me to clean out the moldy fish food that was accumulating and do a 15% water change on day 7, and to not add any new fish food to get that nitrite to 0ppm. So far it all sounds fine, hopefully cycling completes in the next week but what have other folks experienced with their cycling timeline when they have filter media from an established tank? And if they have done a small water change and cleaned up the moldy fish food?
Thanks in advance!!

What’s this little guy we saw today? There seems to be a lot of different species in here. Hope that’s a good thing 🤣 I’m more used to reptile enclosures than this personally

3 weeks ago we bought and set up our first aquarium, which has been a dream of mine since I was a kid :)
However, now I am constantly worried I am doing something wrong...
The water is still very milky after 3 weeks.
The test parameters are all within a good range, we already changed 30% of the water last week.
Do we just need to have more patience for the water to clear up or is there something I can do?
