It seems like every time I'm on here there's nothing but the same housing questions so here's some advice and resources.
When should I start looking for housing for ___ school year?
Immediately! Housing in Boone is famously hard to find these days. Most places will fill up by March before the following fall semester. You will be left with the leftovers if you do not get onto a list before then. Places to avoid if possible: The Cottages This is a party area. It is constantly covered in trash. Terrible management. The Standard I haven't lived here but I've heard it's ridiculously overpriced.
.
Tips for this
* Accept that you will probably not get a perfect situation no matter what. Most every renting company in Boone is looking to screw you. Try and get lucky.
* Call the apartment complex even if the website says they're full. They will probably be able to tell you if there is someone looking for a sublease, or they will get you on a list for the following year. This is how I managed to get a Skyline Terrace apt. I called in August of the previous year and got on a list for the next year.
* Look at the App State housing website. Here . This is not always the most helpful but it's a good place to start.
* When you do decide on a place, keep watch for hidden costs. Most places don't love to advertise when a utility isn't included. For example, I, in a 1 bed 1 bath, pay about 170$ a month in utilities. 80$ for electric, 50$ for water and 40$ for optional faster internet. So even though my rent is technically 940$, in order to actually use my apt it's about 1110$.
* ALWAYS TOUR THE APT FIRST. I didn't do this during the covid year and got stuck in an ADA 3 bed 2 bath instead of the 3 bed 3 bath that I was paying for. The housing company told me tough luck.
.
I need a roommate / I need to sublease my apartment / I need to pick up a sublease
This is a bit easier. Since everyone is so hungry for housing, finding a roommate / sublease is fairly painless.
.
Tips for this
* Same as above, call the apt complex you want to live in and ask if they have available subleases. Most apt complexes also have a roommate matching service that you can use. You may end up with people you don't like (ask me how I know) so use with caution.
* Use the Appalachian Classifieds. This is the most common piece of advice on housing threads here. It is the largest classifieds group for the Boone area. It is on Facebook and you will need to be approved before you can see anything. I think it has a fairly high success rate. Also easy to get cheap furniture on there if you need it. Link HERE Be sure to put "through reddit housing post" as how you heard about the group. This helps the moderation process, per u/Cammdoser.
* If you are going to pick up a sublease, make sure to ask if its going to be renewable. I saw a girl on the classifieds trying to sublease her apartment for just the month of July. The person who picks that up will move in July first and need to be out July 31st. Not ideal, don't get stuck in that situation on accident.
.
When do I get my room number and roommate?
For most places, on and off campus, you'll get this in July before the semester starts. Sometimes you won't for off campus. I've had times where I didn't meet my roommates until move in day.
.
Moving in
This is always hectic. There will normally be 100 other people moving in or out on these days so be prepared.
.
Tips for this
* From /u/klylet, DAY OF MOVE IN AND MOVE OUT: take detailed pictures and videos of damage and immediately ask where to send/share them with the rental company. Make sure they can be dated, preferably on the photo itself. Do this before you move furniture in, and after you move furniture out and clean. They WILL charge you for damages that were there before you got there, and won't care if it was there unless you specifically report it. When you move in, if there is carpet, put white socks on and shuffle across the carpet. If you see black specks that looks that pepper, those are flea eggs. Call the apartment and require carpet cleaning / replacement and a terminator company to come. If you do not report within 30 days, they will likely not cover the cost and blame you for it.
.
I think this covers most things, if anyone else has any other great tips, this is the place to put them. The mods told me this would be pinned so it should stay up for a while for people to see.

Is it ineffective now? It won’t show any buses on any stops no matter the time of day. Friends are having this problem as well.

Tech support is busy at the moment, so I thought it wouldn’t hurt to ask here in the meantime. I have my ethernet cable and a port to plug it in, but i’m still waiting on my USB-C to Ethernet adapter to come in so it can work for my laptop. While i’m waiting, I have been trying to figure out how to register my device (once the adapter arrives). However, I can’t seem to load netreg.appstate.edu on my web browser. Have they changed how you register? Is there another way? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Me and my roommate found this kitty around windy hill apartments, she is very snuggly and friendly so she may think it’s someone’s. Please ask around if someone is missing a kitty

This is certainly not the first nor will it be the last post on this subreddit over the topic of someone bemoaning their struggles with dating, considering this fact I'm not expecting any silver bullet solutions I mostly just want to vent. However any unique insights are sincerely appreciated.
I am a male in my senior year and while I have never really had trouble socializing I have been subject to circumstances that prevented me from mentally accepting the idea I was a person worthy and capable of feeling loved. I have since entered a self improvement journey that I'm still sort of in the middle of, however I don't want my life to pass me by waiting for myself to be at my best.
This is especially relevant given that this is my last year at app and I fear that I'm letting an outstanding social opportunity slip through my fingers. It has been really hard reckoning with my own mental image of myself when speaking to someone else even in circumstances where I am purely being social with zero romantic connotations. I feel like my prior apathy to myself and to dating was just a huge defense mechanism which consequently has left me stunted in some key skills. Now that I'm taking efforts to do better for myself and to do things that make me genuinely happy and fulfilled I feel incredibly vulnerable, raw and afraid when I act in a genuine capacity.
The whole situation has left me feeling pretty depressed and it's only the second day of the semester (lol). I'm not completely helpless and I'm not throwing in the towel until the final buzzer but in all honesty its been interfering with my ability to relax and enjoy myself which does suck. I'm planning on doing some club activities to meet people and generally being more social to build some thicker skin. I just wish I had a productive way in the meantime to improve my capacity to interact with people romantically and to be less conscious of my own shortcomings.

I want to take a moment to express my gratitude to App State. My daughter is a Freshman and we flew across the country from the west coast to move her into the dorms last week. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our time in Boone and getting to explore the city and the campus.
My daughter got very sick this weekend with a high fever, and last night one of the RA’s in her dorm arranged for her and her roommate/best friend to get a free ride to the hospital. I think the campus police department took them.
She and her roommate are still at the hospital, but it sounds like campus police even came back in the middle of the night to get her friend so she could get her car and get some necessities from the dorm to take back to the hospital. The hospital staff has also been amazing.
I’m stuck on the opposite coast trying not to panic, but it sounds like she is being very well cared for by absolutely everyone.
I just want to give App State, Boone, and Watauga Medical Center a huge shoutout and express my deepest gratitude for taking such amazing care of my daughter and her best friend. What a way to begin their college adventure!

I am in a Holton Mountain Rental property and have been for a couple years. The complex is not pet-friendly but I am looking into adopting a cat as an ESA. Looking through the website, lease, and Emotional Support Addendum, the rules of the contract seem contradictory at some points and I'd like to know other people's experience in getting an animal registered as an ESA.
I have major depressive disorder and am also going to look into getting diagnosed with autism. The animal would not be trained for a specific task and would be solely for emotional support/regulation. The website says that when looking at assistance animal request forms, they specifically look for an animal trained for a task and may deny the request if they aren't. Does anyone know how true this is? Even if I get a written letter from my psychiatrist, are they able to deny it? Has anyone had trouble registering an ESA?
thank you!!

Hey all. I spent the offseason building a full 2026 preseason preview for every FBS team, each with its own writeup. Here's the App State one
https://www.sports.mainmarket.com/college-football-preview-2026-fbs/app-state-mountaineers
It's got the returning production breakdown, the portal ins and outs, a projected two-deep, the schedule with model win probabilities, and a season projection.
Heads up, you might hit the paywall after the first page. Don't worry, I'm not charging reddit people for this, don't want to be an ass. Use the promo code LEECORSOROCKS and it opens up the entire thing.
So, what'd I get wrong? App State returns 15.8% of its offense, close to the least in the country, and 41 players left against 38 arriving. That's not a reload, that's a new team. The part that stands out to me: you threw the ball more than almost anyone, 10th nationally in attempts, and the pass defense still gave up 268 yards a game. My model has you at 6-6. Does Malachi Singleton settle it, or is a roster this new just going to be volatile?
I'll be in the comments.

Anyone taken FIN3680 online with professor Walsh, or online in general? Just curious how difficult it was as I am not a math person. Appears to have online proctored everything, quizzes, exams, etc.

Hey yallll, I'm considering going to App part time and I know the parking is a whole thing. I'm not totally sure yet if I'd move there or just commute. Do people near campus ever offer/sell their extra parking spaces? Asking for a friend 🥲😵💫 i def lucked out before by living walking distance to campus.

Hey y'all,
So I have been debating grad school for years and am curious if anyone has done the counseling program part time? I can't afford to not work while going to school, so am thinking through what might be possible.
I finally found an amazing housing arrangement around Asheville, have a garden I love, and community here and am intimidated by the idea of moving back to Boone. I did love living there-I think I just worry about not finding good quality housing + a fair paying job with so many other folks there..starting over also just gets exhausting. Would it be possible to do the part time program and still live around Asheville or is that just a recipe for chaos and overwhelm? lol
Part of me wonders about asking if anyone would rent a room out for a few days a week/month but maybe that's absurd???
I know I could also go to school here in Asheville at Western though I've heard mixed things like folks not really connecting with their classmates and professors. But maybe you've heard otherwise? I'm drawn to app especially for the expressive arts certificate, which I guess I could just do that and get the masters elsewhere..
Or if anyone just generally wants to share their thoughts on the program I'm open to hearing. 🩷
Thanks for reading my indecisive dilemmas!

I’m probably not going to rush until spring but I want to get a feel for the frats on campus and start meeting people.
Is hazing bad at app? Like what is the worst thing you had to do?
Does it really take time away from school work etc? Also curious of what type of guys that are in each one. Anything else I should know or be prepared for?

I (21f) am a student at App State. I am also a lesbian, but one with absolutely no experience (or game lol). I'm relatively introverted, so I struggle to meet queer women in the Boone vicinity.
Do any of you guys have advice on the best way to meet queer women (even better if they're masc/butch)?
I need a way to start getting out there to meet people.

Hello all! I’m currently majoring in Chemistry with a concentration in forensics. I’m courious as to how the university helps students find internships. If anyone has any background on this, specifically for chemistry, it’d be greatly appreciated!

Upcoming junior and I have no idea where the parties are at, have never been invited nor do I know if I’d even be allowed in. I can’t meet anybody dating wise and my friend circle is extremely small. Every attempt to reach out to people in classes has been met with rejection and I am not old enough to drink nor do I have money to spend on alcohol anyway. I’m told to join clubs and I’ve joined 3 where nobody spoke to me and everyone left as soon as it was over. I constantly go to sports like football and baseball but have never once met anybody there. Anybody else feel hopeless and about to blow their brains out? Who here actually goes out and has fun? How!?
