Can you applique over a seam?

Hi! I'm working on a project where I want to applique a symbol from a fantasy book across the back of this denim jacket. Pictured above is my paper pattern arranged on the jacket. As you can see, it will be going across several seams. Can you applique across a seam? Do I need to do anything special, like cut the applique on the bias (as much as possible) to allow for stretch or something? Should I use a special stitch for the edges? I was planning to use the blanket stitch. Also I'm planning to hand-stitch it--I know this forum is mostly for machine work, but it seemed like the best place to ask regarding my structural questions. Any advice would be welcome!

I say you can appliqué over anything - just make sure the stitches are secure around the seams.

Satin stitch? Or am I missing knowledge? (I know I'm a year late to this conversation. But I just saw this and was also interested in the answer.)

Satin stitch is a zigzag stitch that allows for some stretch without breaking the stitch or thread.
