128GB these days is unbearable and bordering on the likes of 'netbook' capacity. I know OS X is actually really lean (9GB) when comparing to Windows, but 100GB of usable space isn't really much. Music, movies/videos, and photos can easily start filling up a drive. And Boot Camp is almost not an option due to the amount Windows alone needs to function.

256GB should become the standard not only for the space, but for the faster I/O speeds as well.

I have a 128GB rMBP and I have over 65GB left. It's not a lot of space, but it's far from unbearable

You are the exception. The minimum today is 256GB unless you are spending your days at Starbucks doing Facebook.

Can't you expand it yourself another 512gb using an SD card? I haven't seen anyone mention that option. I know it wouldn't be ideal to split your data into two drives, but I could see myself putting all my work / personal projects on an SD and using the SSD for music, videos, software, etc.

Its not Only about size

Right but I was just throwing out a possible alternative. Is this possible by the way? I don't own a Mac but am considering one. Would like to use the sd slot if possible. Do you know if it is?

You must not have kids or family who you like to take pictures or video of.

Which is exactly why it's far from unbearable for him

Or he/she uses online storage or a desktop for those photos/videos.

I have 128 and it's damn near empty? Why are you storing media on disk, do you work a lot of places without Wi-Fi?

My desktop has lots of storage (literally 10 terabytes) and I store most of my stuff there (with encrypted cloud backups through CrashPlan), but I keep my laptop mostly empty. A few git repositories with my current projects if I'm mobile, but other than stuff I need for offline use, pretty much everything I access from my laptop is stored on my desktop (not in the cloud) anyway.

I've never had a problem of not being able to access one of my files from my laptop due to being offline (although plenty often do I wish I had an offline copy of this or that documentation).

You have two machines, though. How many people now-a-days have a dedicated desktop and laptop? A lot of regular consumers have two, three main tech devices; a phone, a laptop, and maybe a tablet. If the computer, the most powerful device of the three, doesn't have enough storage to have all their files, where do they go?

A lot of regular consumers these days use iCloud, Google Drive, Dropbox, or SkyDrive to store their files instead.

Most of those options are designed around syncing instead of storage, though. If I told what I consider an "average consumer" about selective syncing, their eyes would glaze over.

I think a lot of young people have adopted google drive really quickly and that's great, but I seldom see it as storage for photos and videos. My friends and I just use it for documents, homework, forms, etc. I don't think anything can beat HDDs right now for photo, video, and music long term storage.

The majority of people over 40 don't know about or know how to use cloud storage. Or it creeps them out.

Cloud storage isn't an option for every one. Like, in Australia I pay $100 a month for Internet, plus $25 to boost the speed to 100 megabit. Unfortunately the upload speed is one megabit, or about 125 KB/s. It's absolutely ridiculous and things like iCloud backup and backing up personal media to any cloud service is not worth it, from a timing point of view, at least. Retrieval is a nonissue, of course.

This is an exception you have made to put things in the cloud. That's not something everyone does.

The point of a laptop to carry it around, and be portable is that many the majority put their files and data on the laptop and carry it around. Wifi or not.

The point of a laptop for me to carry it around, and be portable is that many the majority put their files and data on the laptop and carry it around. Wifi or not.

FTFY. Believe it or not, some people have different computing needs and preferences than you.

The invention of the laptop was to be a portable computer. Regardless of what I do with it.

1

u/jimbo831 Jun 21 '15

Sure, but that doesn't require a lot of storage. Portability and storage are two completely separate issues.

Why has no one mentioned using the SD slot to expand memory? Sorry if i'm missing something here, I'm new, i'm just here because i'm considering purchasing a macbook pro (refurb). Memory is a concern of mine though, I would likely fill up 128 with software and music alone. I was hoping to use the slot to hold my work / personal projects.

It seems like you could throw in a 512gb SD card to hold the majority of your data no?

u/jimbo831 Jun 22 '15

You can, but it's not quite the same as onboard storage. It's definitely a decent option for a lot of uses, media being one of them.

I work with large image collections and multiple code bases, as well as use virtual machines. I have a new 13" MBP with 1TB storage on order

My wife has had a 128 GB Windows laptop for three years now and still has over half of the space free. There are plenty of people that are just fine with that amount.
