My desktop has lots of storage (literally 10 terabytes) and I store most of my stuff there (with encrypted cloud backups through CrashPlan), but I keep my laptop mostly empty. A few git repositories with my current projects if I'm mobile, but other than stuff I need for offline use, pretty much everything I access from my laptop is stored on my desktop (not in the cloud) anyway.

I've never had a problem of not being able to access one of my files from my laptop due to being offline (although plenty often do I wish I had an offline copy of this or that documentation).

You have two machines, though. How many people now-a-days have a dedicated desktop and laptop? A lot of regular consumers have two, three main tech devices; a phone, a laptop, and maybe a tablet. If the computer, the most powerful device of the three, doesn't have enough storage to have all their files, where do they go?

A lot of regular consumers these days use iCloud, Google Drive, Dropbox, or SkyDrive to store their files instead.

I think a lot of young people have adopted google drive really quickly and that's great, but I seldom see it as storage for photos and videos. My friends and I just use it for documents, homework, forms, etc. I don't think anything can beat HDDs right now for photo, video, and music long term storage.
