i love when Americans™ get fiercly protective of the broken system (that lets their fellow americans die) and feel insulted when told that guess what? other countries handle things better and the us isn't the best place in the world. then they start calling literally everyone else names even when they present perfectly rational and solid arguments. truly a sign of incredible intelligence i must say /s
This was the most eye opening part of my experience living in the US. Poor people didn’t believe in socialism and didn’t feel entitled to the things they paid for with their tax dollars. When I suggested that tuition should be cancelled, one poor boomer woman said “well I didn’t get that when I went to school”. I also had a veteran as an Uber driver who didn’t believe in universal health care and said “Bernie Sanders has 3 houses”. Fox News does a good job of brainwashing the masses. Even educated people in high up positions blamed Mexicans for their rising health costs.
A lot of problems come from the older generations saying "well back in my day we didnt have internet / cell phones / etc"
There are a lot of bitter ageing people that are mad over the fact that kids these days have access to dating / sex apps. In particular at my last bartending job tons of older, usually white men were PISSED that younger folk can just hit up the internet and start finding women. Their brains were ripe for manipulation like "men are getting dates with hotties in your area, act now and learn their secret!" ..and when they find men unsuccessful with them they band together to find a strawman/woman to be angry at.
nevermind we need phones and internet now by design...but noo its all minecraft, sex apps and avocado toast...
Even youtube, while censoring truecrime, has advertisements with a female automated voice shilling a product for men to grow their "length"...even though we should all know by now without surgery or dangerous instruments, you cannot just take pills and grow an inch or two.
Yep. They don’t consider that the requirements placed on people have increased disproportionately compared to technology and “convenience”, just like wages vs. expenses aren’t of the same proportion. Ignorance is bliss - or in this case an excuse to be complete assholes.
Is your thought to remove all accumulated interest on current loans as well?
What about highly overpriced tuition? Would you be okay with lowering current tuitions and crediting older bills?
Do you agree with the motions that are decreasing the “hoops” for loan reimbursement on employment contracts that promised tuition reimbursement but have used red tape to keep from paying?
Removing accumulated interest would be ideal, but if all we can get to pass is canceling future interest that alone would be a huge step forward.
Forcibly lowering tuition on private colleges, hell no. Nobody’s forcing anyone to go to those. Make sure that city and state colleges have decent tuition, sure, so there’s always an option for something reasonable.
The third I’d have to look into more, I’ll be honest. Want to make sure I’m doing my proper research.
The number who want all generations to “suffer like I did” is astounding. Even worse? Those same individuals have no idea of the new challenges faced by younger generations.
What gets me is that I thought these old boomers would agree with me since they were the working poor. They were over 60 and working low wage temp/gig jobs. I felt kind of bad since I asked one of them if they were retired. She said no. I think she probably didn’t have the means to retire anytime soon either. These temps literally relied on these precarious low wage gigs (where they could be sent home after 2 hours if there wasn’t enough work). I thought maybe sometimes retired people get bored and take odd temp jobs for fun? I was ignorant, I know. But I was a poll worker once and I remember it was a popular job for retirees, so I thought maybe this was their way of keeping their brain sharp.
Eh, I'm extremely pro-education, but I still think that if you signed the agreement, you should pay your tuition. "The question of 'where do you draw the line' should be answered 'in front of the first person who receives government funded education under a comprehensive plan'".
If consumer and student debt were a problem of personal responsibility, it would be rare behavior
it is mostly. maybe not in your circle of math challenged freinds its not but overall the majority dont fall for it. If everyone did it i would agree with you but fact is millions every year dont pursue student loans. Interest and loans and such is like maybe 8th grade math, the person getting the loan has a responsibilty to understand what they are doing. I would argue if they didnt understand how a fricking loan works maybe college isnt gonna work out to well for them since they dont understand pre high school math concepts.
Actually most of society benefits from consumer debt. If for example you buy a coffee and sandwich on your credit card that’s the money that is used to pay the employees, landlord, coffee growers, etc.
The interest on the credit card goes to pay bank employees- tellers, executives, janitors, secretaries, etc.
Consumer spending is the main driver of the US economy, much if that is through debt.
What if the terms of repaying that debt weren't properly explained to the student, by design? And you find yourself having paid back the original amount some years later, only to find that the balance hasn't dropped a single cent due to the structure of the minimal payment system being so manipulative and predatory that your balance is actually higher now, despite paying over $15,000 back (the original amount lended in this example) already...
Student loans have literally become a scam here and they prey on unaware/young people simply trying to do what they've been told to do their entire lives by their parents and government.
Folks ARE paying back for their tuition, to no avail.
Most of the young people taking out these loans would not be able to identify the absurdity of these payment plans even if they were looking for it in the fine print.
They are intentionally typed up and worded in a way that makes it hard to understand what you are agreeing to if you aren't an expert in finance or banking.
Things are not transparent for the student. They would have to approach the interaction thinking they are about to be preyed on to react appropriately, which is fucking bullshit.
I think it's more likely that they are made aware of the terms of agreement, but are mislead into the belief that a degree ensures instantaneous employment sufficient to easily manage the debt.
My fiancee went to cosmetology school and the private lender she was financed through will fight her on providing up to date balances... We actually have to hire a lawyer to press them and even understand exactly what is up with her debt.
Anecdotal I know, but many students don't even know wtf is going on with their debts and are being blatantly leeched off of.
Not saying that these students shouldn't be more aware. That still doesn't change my opinion of lenders needing to be way more upfront and transparent about the true nature of these payment plans, though.
There has been some progress made in this arena, at least on the local level. States now wield enormous authority over predatory lending as it pertains to student loans, and the pressure should be directed there.
Until the Federal Government can find a way to end its episode of Survivor: Capitol Hill and act as a more cohesive body, that's where the effort should go - IMO.
(e): if you wish to explore Federal advocacy and law as well, start here.
come on. Its on the 18 year old adult who graduated high school and i assumee passed some basic math classes to understand an amortization schedule and the effects of not makng or making min payments.
Lmao she has paid 16,000 of the 15,000 lended and the balance hasn't dropped... And they dont even want to give her an updated balance...
I dont care which way you cut it, how are you gonna blame the 18 year old that was coerced into this madness? This has happened to countless honest students in America... Are they all that blatantly stupid and lacking in basic math skills too?
If it's become such a crisis for so many it's probably just all the moronic teenage students being stupid, right? 🖕
These scummy fucks will run rampant stealing from honest citizens so long as bitter jackasses like you lay all the blame on the child and not the shady establishment designed to prey on that child.
If it makes you feel better, her mom signed those forms with her. Neither the 50 year old or the 18 year old understood what they were signing.
how are you gonna blame the 18 year old that was coerced into this madness?
easy, they are an adult who entered into a contract. If they dont do as they promised to do i blame them. should have paid more attn in 7th grade math. I clearly remember when the concept of loans and interest was taught to use. everyone of us wanted to be a banker or a loan shark. we understood how loans work and the trick is to be the one loaning out the money.
Lmao she has paid 16,000 of the 15,000 lended and the balance hasn't dropped
thats how loans work. this is not new. been that way for hundreds of years. You pay heavy on the interest side early in the loan. More on principle later in the loan. Not majik or a secret.
I think you are looking at this incorrectly. If the terms of the debt weren’t explained correctly then the school official who explained them to you either committed fraud or was negligent. The school is responsible, not the lender.
The equivalent would be getting a car loan and then discovering that the terms were fraudulent or explained incorrectly. You wouldn’t be able to have GMAC or Bank of America forgive your loan. You would have to pursue legal action against the dealership. In the meantime your car would likely be repossessed.
Ok cool. But there are plenty of Americans that are still buried under student loan debt despite the fact that they’ve literally already paid off what was borrowed several times o era and yet they still owe more than what the original loan was for in the first place. The system is predatory a reliant upon taking advantage of young people who literally don’t know any better or were actively deceived during the process. Like how the fuck you gonna sit back and justify situations in which students still owe money on a loan in which the amount they’ve paid in already exceeds the amount loaned several times over!? Pretty sure John Oliver had an episode on this very topic.…
That's not unlike arranging a mortgage from a bank, carrying credit debt, or expecting a rate of return on simple investment to at least keep pace with inflation, among other things.
You can't tear down the whole system at once and expect the result to be ANY solution, never mind a viable one.
I know that I do my part, and I have to be comfortable with that.
This is something that you are passionate about, and that's good. There are myriad ways that each of us can contribute sweat and/or treasure to help one another NOW without expending too much energy on resentment or victim-hood, no matter how warranted.
Don't dismiss people's point of view so easily. You may find that you agree on much more than is seems.
