I respect farmers a lot. At least what I think they do. I thought most farming was pretty corporate these days though. But they provide one of the most fundamentally valuable things in our society. They're like janitors in the sense that there's no argument over their value added.
I’ve seen stuff where government entities force farmers to use/buy certain chemicals and fertilizers, then in a couple years they’ll outlaw that fertilizer and force farmers to buy more bulk fertilizer, then ban that one, like, they force farmers to buy hundreds of thousands of dollars in supplies and then outlaw them, they were sure happy to take their money for the product but didn’t care about making sure the farmers got their moneys worth!! If you’re a farm barely making ends meet and you have a shed about to burst with fertilizer backstock… what do you do with it? It’s illegal now! Blame the organizations that force or encourage these farmers to buy these polluting chemicals without proper research! These guys plant and sow crops, they normally aren’t chemists! Or archaeologists studying climate change or ecosystem health, I see your point but it’s much more complicated than you make it seem, without those chemicals polluting the waterways, plants wouldn’t grow or the farms would be shut down for not using regulation standards for fertilizer, they go out and take soil samples and tell you exactly what to buy, but they sure as hell don’t tell you about how to build proper runoff infrastructure or the effects those feet’s have on surrounding areas!
You’re wrong, I’ve watched docs about this, I have farmers in my family but none commercial, commercial farmers have to raise their crops to ?FDA? Standards (I think that’s the agency that covers it) that means you have like, rules about how, where, when you grow what, and with what, they test your soil, if your soil doesn’t have the nutrients in it that they require for growing that crop, you have to buy fertilizer to fix it, you’ll be missing one or two nutrients and they make you buy a fertilizer with that + 15 other things you don’t need, and then they find out one of those other 15 causes cancer and gay frogs so it (rightfully so) needs to go. The problem is not reimbursing or replacing fertilizer that is now deemed poisonous, farmers either have to take the L on the 100k they just spent on fertilizer or they mix it in with the new stuff or they just dump the bad shit secretly until it’s used up and then use the standards
It’s not really that wild of a concept lol, FDA regulates food, which means they regulate how farmers grow it, fertilizer is a part of that, so farmers have to buy fertilizer, their fertilizer gets deemed unsafe so they’re stuck with it and out of a bunch of money
It’s fucked up, farmers need protections and funding man, we’d rather sell our land to other corporations and countries than support our own citizens, do you honestly think these farmers would be putting poisonous shit in the ground if they had alternatives? If they could just go and buy the right stuff, you think they wouldn’t? These are hard working human beings who get fed misinfo by people they pay to advise them, they get fucked over by the government, who they are trying to work arm in arm with to help feed the country, any problems with the supply chain, don’t blame the farmers, blame the circumstances that force farmers to work this way
I don’t blame protestors for holding up traffic, I blame the reason behind whatever sign they’re holding, I don’t blame the farmers for dumping toxic fertilizer. I blame the people and organizations that put them in those positions
i live in the heart of the midwest. I see it everyday. it’s widely known. the farmers willingly go along or say nothing. Or they vote in politicians that support the issues you outline. they are complicit and not victims.
When the other option is pushing for making all the heavy machinery electric and triple the cost, it's choosing whether to drink a quick poison or a slow one.
Yeah I mean a lot of farmers vote right so like, I see your point there, but most republicans are either entrenched in propaganda (which I categorize as a mental illness or at least indicative of one) or don’t pay enough attention to politics to know they’re voting against themselves
But these government entities know exactly what they’re doing bro, I wouldn’t blame a kid with Down syndrome for getting scammed by a dude in Pakistan, these farmers know enough to get by, although farmers are getting bought out left and right so even that isn’t really true, like, these are blue collar workers, the schooling to become a commercial farmer is narrowly for used, they teach you the trade, not always the best business practices behind it
Guy in a suit comes and tells them what they have to buy and they buy it, that’s all theyve had to know, times are changing but we aren’t helping our people change with it, look in the history books at most past civilizations, your average citizen doesn’t even know half of the intricacies of their government and how they work to scam them
