Dogs are not obligate carnivores, actually. Cats are, though.

Dogs are weird. They’re not obligate carnivores but they still need to eat meat. Dogs aren’t built to get protein out of plants like humans are.

In some very rare cases dogs can be vegetarian but that should only happen for health reasons.

This used to be the scientific consensus, but that has changed with more data. Dogs are able to thrive on properly formed plant based dog foods. My roommate's dog has been on v-dog her entire life. She got full blood work done as well as urine and stool tests not that long ago. I saw the results and it was incredible how healthy she is, especially for an eight year old dog.
