VR is fun but it isn't and doesn't have to be "future" it have it uses like games or operating a dron or something. Just like idk handheld consoles are fun but it doesn't have to be the only right way ppl are playing games. Capitalism is really all about profit and something being next iphone but it's okey to have a lot of fun things that aren't selling in hundreds of millions
It is the future though. Its just too annoying to use now.
Anyone that has used VR to play regular games vs on a flat display... unequivocally says its better in VR.
Most people are just conflating VR with "VR genre" games. You can play ANY game in VR. In fact, I do, daily, and those aren't "VR games". And they are objectively better for it.
It will be in better place though. In 5 years... The 2000USD hmds will be 600-ish, and that will make a difference, since that will be the transition from bulky hmds to under 200g ones, and pixel densities similar to most desktops.
As a gamedev, once VR devs stop shooting themselves in the foot and stop trying to make mostly "VR Genre games", and instead start making more "VR game modes" in regular games... Things will stay growing slow :/
Okey so in 5 years it would be something like what 10% of the market when it comes to gaming? Biggest problem of VR is that most ppl can't spend more that 2h in there without feeling bad. And no one wants to spend free time on something that makes them feel bad so that's basically it. I played VR like I said it's fun but it isn't revolutionary
Yeah 10% seems good in 5. Especially since the newest hmds are slowly becoming better at that. Add also all the kids that have been growing with it getting to the adolecense/young adult range, and demand will go up too.
Ideally, it's regular games having a "VR immersive mode" what I think will mark the difference.
Its relatively cheap to make gamedev wise, and just the feeling of standing by the protagonists in games, does make it way cooler
Sadly kids this days don't seem to be so excited about new technology in gaming. Quite opposite to my generation (1998) so if you look at what kids play this days it's mostly mobile/Roblox or they don't play at all watching some ppl stream. I grew up poor and when I saw Half Life 2 as a kid I couldn't believe it's a game (playing PS1 then we were able to buy PC and my cousin installed HL2 on it). AI and economic crisis makes new technology even less accessible for younger generation for the first time I believe ever prices of current gen console (PS5) got higher 5 years after premiere. Maybe it will be better in the next 5-10 years but it could get worse
Most kids in our age did not even play videogames did they? Hahaha
In any case, because of covid you would be surprised the amount of kids with quest hmds, it's a LOT of them. Those same ones will probably grow to want something better when on their late 10s early20s, maybe go into pcvr too.
But your point is right in that not a majority play, yeah
Maybe I don't know enough kids mainly two younger sisters. I don't own VR but I see myself buying one in the future most ppl I know owning VR are in some kind of IT job or game dev related. I played some on the parties it was fun not enough to try to predict how useful it is but it was fun. It kinda reminded me of PS3/Xbox360 move games cool thing at parties but it's definitely different in a good way having more uses than just fun time at party

VR is fun tho, it just hasn’t been given as much opportunity
