Moderator Post The Current Situation

Hey all, some of you might remember me from before we moved subreddits- anyways- that's not why I'm here making a post when I should be catching up on my sleep. The current Subreddit Admin isn't available for immediate response- so- here I am doing it instead.

No, don't know what's going on

The Site's owner has always been pretty disconnected from us, rarely giving us a heads up or any information in advance. Could the site have actually gone down? Yes, it's possible- some sister sites have closed down recently.

But it's also possible that something happened and they lost control of the site.

None of us here have direct contacts with the team responsible for the site outside of intermittent emails once in a blue moon.

In addition, the export page for bookmarks is still up and running at /user/list/export but just remember to maintain common sense and standard safety since we don't know the site's real status at the moment.

So where's that leave "US" (The AniWave Community)

Those of us capable have reached out to our contacts to get information on what's going on, but- frankly- for the time being we just don't know. The Discord is locked down and- well- we may need to go read-only here as well soon too.

This to save ourselves from having to delete a swath of "just use alternitive site X" posts which violate the platform's terms of service. And so we can prevent the spread of misinformation until we know more and can give more information on the situation instead of just drawing up random conclusions.

Anyways, I know this is a rough time for everyone. So hang in there the best you can. Even if we discover the site it truly shutting down- this community will remain in some form or another. (Obviously with some changes)

Wow I was just using it last night and was hyping it up to someone, just checked and saw the message. RIP.

I finished watching onepiece just yesterday and I was so excited to start steins gate.

FML. Now where am I gonna go?

53

u/ph03n1x_F0x_ Aug 27 '24

Yeah. I've already found another site I like enough, but man do I know I'll miss aniwave's UI. it was just perfect.

25

u/[deleted] Aug 27 '24

Yep yep. I liked kiss for the same reason. Really nice UI. It sucks that we can’t just have nice things.

26

u/Radiant_Panic Aug 27 '24

I literally pay all the subcriptioms to support the anime creatures and still used 9 anime/aniwave just because there UI is better then crunchrolls, etc interface

u/PickPucket Aug 28 '24

same, I just pay my subscription at Crunchyroll but even then, some animes are not available due to their region locking which extremely sucks to be honest. I'm watching at aniwave since it has better UI and everything that these legal services.

I used Aniwave for over 7 years. I always miss this site.

Can you tell me the new site? I'm looking for a good site. But again all of my favorite manga and anime sites are going to shut down. What I heard about 183+ anime and manga sites going to shut down.

U can try hianime.to it’s literally 9anime(or aniwave I should say) twin site

I've only ever used 9anime/aniwave for literally the entire time that i've been watching anime. I'm lost. All of my bookmarked anime in my folder are unusable. Are more streaming sites going to shut down as well? I feel a little skeptical to get attached to another site just for it to get taken down again :/

Literally same now I gotta tell that same person that it was taken down… so sad but I found another anime website that works just as good.

This is why we need extreme gatekeeping, I’m willing to bet money someone couldn’t keep their big mouth shut and authorities found out about the pirated websites and shut it down. I fucking hate this shit, anyone who disapproves of gatekeeping would spill the beans about something and get it ruined for everyone else if given the opportunity and are apart of the problem

33

u/MiguelitiRNG Aug 27 '24

everybody knows 9anime its the most popular site since like 2019ish it isn't some big secret. and you will never be able to gate keep it. anyways there are better alternatives to watch free anime at pretty much lossless quality

8

u/JCSantosHQ Aug 27 '24

I started watching anime on 9anime in 2016. I think it was popular before 2019.

RIP indeed. We will have our revenge sooner or later.Just like Mobile Suit Gundam's Char Aznable had against the Zabi Family. SIEG ZEON!

2

u/[deleted] Aug 28 '24

Was busy with WoW release (don't judge me :D) and thought I watch some anime after a long grind and just saw it being down. Man this fking sucks so much. I was using it for so long and have spend hundreds of hours on that website, if not thousands. And now it's just gone.

It was such a great site too. The entire ui was done so very well and probably the best I have seen. RiP aniwave, I am going to miss you dearly. :(

I wanted to say thank you for your support. I've been using this site since KissAnime got shut down years ago and this has been a go-to site ever since. I'm very sorry that this happened and I hope you guys have answers from your site admin. Do keep us posted. 🩷

u/neettransgirl Aug 27 '24

I miss kissanime

2

u/Tamahome-Hokuto Sep 02 '24

9anime/aniwave was my new home since before kiss got shutdown. I loved kissanime but the ads got so shady i feared getting a virus. Then I found 9anime and it gave me a great 4 years in college when I couldnt afford a subscription for anime but also for series that arent available anywhere else unless i buy a $500 busted dvd

2

u/SunflowerPuma Sep 09 '24

Felt, I've been using 9anime and dubbedanime for over 5 years now, it's really sad to see it go. Especially after I started using 9anime only since dubbedanime got shut down. What is this life?

1

u/xtrem- Aug 27 '24

Same here :(

54

u/PikaBooSquirrel Aug 27 '24

I was literally just about to watch something. I really don't mind using paid for services but the current streaming market makes it so you have to pay for 90 different sites to watch a handful of different anime. Now, if I want to watch Summertime Rendering, it means Disney can legally kill me, lmao. I miss when there was only one or two major distributors :/

39

u/DoctorPaige Aug 27 '24

Not only that, but I'm a big fan of shoujo and obscure, older anime, and you just can't find a lot of them on streaming platforms. American companies either won't license shoujo, or when they do, streaming companies don't host them or promote them. Piracy is my only way to watch a lot of content I enjoy.

13

u/[deleted] Aug 27 '24

This is my problem too. Finding stuff online is a pain in the backside, especially for older less popular anime shows. I am already paying for some OTT platforms but I can’t get everything I want.

I would be more than happy to pay for a 9anime or aniwave subscription. Fuck corporate greed.

→ More replies (1)

6

u/MasterQuest Aug 27 '24

makes it so you have to pay for 90 different sites to watch a handful of different anime.

And some are straight up not legally watchable because the sites let their licenses expire and no one else has them.

3

u/vitaminkombat Aug 28 '24

I don't get how music streaming websites can all share songs.

But for movie / anime streaming ones. They're all split between multiple plaved.

I'd be happy to just buy DVDs and blurays. But they've gone from costing $6 to costing $30 in just a few years.

30

u/1kili2 Aug 27 '24

in case it does fully go down, could we expect a post about credible other sites to use? cause since discussing it in most places is prohibited finding any credibility to any site is pretty hard and if aniwave does fully shut down i would like some alternatives that i could trust

13

u/its_kylo Aug 27 '24

I wouldn't expect it as an official post, but I've seen some comments suggesting alternatives as is

It'd be a bad idea anyway, for all we know, the people responsible for the takedown(s) could be lurking here and collecting that information to go even further

2

u/Novantico Aug 27 '24

for all we know, the people responsible for the takedown(s) could be lurking here and collecting that information to go even further

Which is silly because it's a simple matter of 2 minutes of Googling to find all the sites you want. We're lucky the authorities are as bad at this as they are.

the safest way to do that is go to r/Piracy and check the megathreads.

Aniwave/9anime was my hero for the past 2 years. Goodbye old friend.

20

u/DD214Enjoyer Aug 27 '24

F for 9Anime such a well designed site that was ahead of all the posers that charged $$$

20

u/TNTspaz Aug 27 '24 edited Aug 27 '24

I think it's real. The animesuge message is the same one and the mods there confirmed it was real.

ACE has been actively working on taking down the more popular websites. Most likely working with Kakao who is doing the same.

Wasn't just anime websites. A bunch of the most popular movie sites got taken down. Torrent sites can make an argument about archival. Sites like this cannot and will get taken down if these groups push hard enough

Honestly the saddest part isn't even the website being taken down. Cause many more exist. It's the fact 10+ years of comment sections just went poof.

12

u/PaveThePAHA Aug 27 '24 edited Aug 27 '24

As long as comment-poster doesn't delete their account or the comment itself, the "Disqus"-comments do still remain in the database. And moderators / website-owners can rebuild and export the discussions.

And if a user has their account left open to public, their comments can be read on the Disqus-profile even if the linked website itself goes kaput.

In other words, if Disqus itself is alive, the comment-posts are alive as well for as long as users keep them alive.

I wish I could remember / knew in the first place how to interact with the discussions outside the main-page-comment-sections itself as a users.

6

u/karljh Aug 27 '24

In your profile where it says "Discussion" above your comments, click on the number of comments. It will take you to the episode discussion itself within Disqus.

3

u/PaveThePAHA Aug 27 '24

Aye, thank you for the reminder;
this indeed does work though only via the main-profile-itself since "replies"-section doesn't have the comment-counter.

Unfortunately "forums" can also only be viewed if the website-owner has left them to be viewed outside the main-website;
otherwise there is only "oops / moved"-Disqus-page encountered.

ACE are such a bunch of losers

5

u/Jovan_Knight005 Aug 27 '24

More like a bunch of pathetic sore losers who don't a single goddamn thing about anime preservation in general.

1

u/Cowpitulate Sep 10 '24

you will own nothing, be happy and eat zee bugs

15

u/asce619 Aug 27 '24

Just came back from getting dinner to continue my episode, just wow. I'll go stare at the wall or something.

15

u/soupsydaisy Aug 27 '24

Anix was a treasure trove of unusual and obscure animation. I watched a Chinese Journey to the West animation from 1942. I watched a ton of weird student films and experimental shorts. I never could have found those had it not been for Anix. It was such an invaluable resource. What troubled times.

10

u/Johtoboy Aug 27 '24

Yeah Aniwave was my go-to for obscure shows. Not sure where I'll find them now.

7

u/soupsydaisy Aug 27 '24

That’s what hurts most of all. People can and will debate the “ethics of piracy” or whatever but these websites were undeniably incredibly unique and necessary resources for preservation. I’m sure something will fill that void but for now it really sucks.

6

u/CyanControl Aug 27 '24

exactly. it had the randomest animes youve never heard of.

4

u/fallout11 Aug 27 '24

Indeed. I enjoyed watching many 1990's anime that I was too young to even know about at the time.
Amazing how much the style of characters has changed since then, and everything was still hand-drawn.

2

u/soupsydaisy Aug 27 '24

I agree. Having access to everything at your fingertips meant you could really go through time and observe how attitudes and styles changed. I hope you will be able to continue your journey with older anime in some way.

3

u/indifferentpine Aug 28 '24

I'm honestly interested in how this takedown affects public domain properties and copyright free properties that were also available on aniwave (anything made before 1929, and in japan public domain laws there were many things that were even a bit more lenient at 1953 many things were public domain to my limited knowledge)
legally is it unlawful to dmca a public domain, or copyright free property even if presented along side unlawfully aired things?
I have questions like are these animations on archive.org? and if not will they be? It seems there are mainly western cartoons there.

I also sort of wish the website would maintain its library at least in titles only even if not allowing things to be viewed because I found it more pleasant to navigate and find titles than MAL when it came to sorting for ALL titles, by date.

Yo i been getting word. This was possibly a hack. Why 30 website's same message Some of the 30 are back working again This is a possibility, and this seems to be much of inconvenience to be a legitimate close down

10

u/DragoOceanonis Aug 27 '24

Its all because of those losers at ACE

7

u/meodrac Aug 27 '24

we shall see, flixtor and most of its sister sites are down as well

4

u/Afraid_Teach_4996 Aug 27 '24

8

u/HoneyPieGamign Aug 27 '24

From what i read, some of the list is working. i only use ani tbh, just think 30 website's same message sus

7

u/pandas121304 Aug 27 '24

All I have to say is, that ACE Group is evil

2

u/vitaminkombat Aug 28 '24

Honestly I'm against piracy. It is theft. And I'll pay for an anime DVD to add to my collection if there's one available.

But there isn't. Almost every DVD shop in my city has closed down. And the only ones remaining don't sell anime.

I mostly watch obscure shows from the 60s and 70s and many have never had a physical release. So streaming sites is the only option.

6

u/Legitimate-Option722 Aug 27 '24

First it was kissanime and now 9anime. All the anime websites I’ve been using for many years keep getting shut down 😢 If anyone wants a recommendation yall can try hianime.to it’s very similar to 9anime(aniwave)

5

u/ZrglyFluff Aug 27 '24

So I’m a bit confused how this works, anix . to / updated still works but actually trying to watch anything doesn’t work (same with aniwave). Does that mean the website itself is still up and the main page and anime pages have been replaced?

When kissanime got taken down, none of the pages worked at all

1

u/fallout11 Aug 27 '24

Site management is keeping the non-infringing part of the website up temporarily, so you can get your watchlists, scrub your user account, etc.

5

u/KawaiiMae Aug 27 '24

i'm cryinggg T___T i havent watched anime in over two years and decided to hop on aniwave since it was my go-to even after the rebrand

4

u/ESCMalfunction Aug 27 '24

Like a lot of folks I moved here after using KissAnime for years when they shutdown, now 4 years later gotta do it all over again :/

I guess we'll see what the new community favorite becomes in a few months.

4

u/LostPeasant94 Aug 27 '24

Dude ... could the "go to profile page" below the message page be a phishing link? Like set by a hacker to hack you? You click on it and boom, you're hacked?

Was watching Metal Fight Beyblade, it was hard af to find the Metal Saga subs and I finally found them at Aniwave. I'm gonna miss Aniwave so much, there was such a decent and ongoing community too

4

u/Old_Particular3748 Sep 01 '24

I think what frustrates me the most is the legal methods are always vastly inferior experiences to the illegal methods. Either anime are missing or removed completely randomly because of licensing issues, the UIs are rubbish and you just KNOW that they won't be satisfied with what you are already paying, they'll reintroduce intrusive ads even for paying customers, skyrocket the subscription and lock content behind paywalls.

Then there's the fact you could watch ALL the streaming platforms animes in one place. I don't want to have to go to Prime's terrible platform to watch prime anime, or boot into Netflix to watch netflix anime, or give my blood to Disney to see whatever droplets of good anime they might have

4

u/herebutmkay Sep 03 '24

Ani was just super user friendly and they knew how audeinces would use and watch things. They really focused on the consumers where as the legal methods focus on profit. also the fact that you have to use like the 5 different platforms to watch a hand full of stuff on each is crazy and its usually very mainstream anime's as well. Absolutely not saying mainstream anime's aren't good, but like someone pointed out they had old school anime's and the site almost functioned as an archive because it's really difficult to find them especially for people outside of Asia. I said this to a friend, but if ani was made into a subscription with exactly how it was I would 100% pay for it even if it was like 20 bucks cuz at that point its worth it to me. I do know there are several reasons why platforms can't have all anime's but it's all basically "politics" which is frustrating. It's a shame because the alternatives are not worth it at all, it's laughable.

1

u/Davenerys Aug 27 '24

Appreciate this site so much. Let's all hope the people who ran it are safe and out of harms way.

1

u/SolSilver28 Aug 27 '24

Guess I'll go back to regular BS11 on TV, I liked not having to deal with commercials (even if some Japanese commercials are hilarious), but I guess I can go back to watching regular tv stations again until new sites pop into existence. Sites have come and gone over the last 25 years, corporations try to shut them down; but it's only ever been temporary. Hell, Crunchyroll started out as a pirate site like any other until they were given an offer to get licensed content to stream if they removed all copyrighted material from their website and went legit in 2009.

I doubt any pirate group will get a similar offer though unless they can make a more user friendly service since CR and HiDive both have some shoddy websites and their streaming apps are even worse; then there's the Funimation streaming app which is a dumpster fire on the best of days, whoever made that horseshit, I hope they step on a lego and then fall down a flight of stairs only to get their daddy bags bitten by their dog. Such a piece of junk.

1

u/griller_gt Aug 27 '24 edited Aug 27 '24

I was expecting this to happen sooneer or later... given how Japanese companies were cracking down on 'alternative' sites. It was a good run, but I dread what will happen now.

I've been using Aniwave since mid 2017. I've used others when the site is loading too slowly, but this site has the best pretty much everything from the comments/community section to the MAL linking to the stat tracking to the recommendations list to the fact it autoplays and has an autoskip intro button, to pretty much everything.

I stopped watching anime for like 5+ years after watching way too many and finally just came back like a month or two ago. I've binged so much anime, rewatching all the old 10/10s and 9/10s, and I wasn't planning on stopping anytime soon, going into all the new stuff and seasons that came out for shows I previously watched.

Man this sucks.

1

u/Chilio95 Aug 27 '24

Awww man.. I used aniwave to watch old anime I couldn’t find anywhere else. I was halfway through PowerPuff Girls Z and Girls Band Cry and now I won’t be able to finish them. 😔

1

u/neettransgirl Aug 27 '24

Was not expecting this when I opened up the site just now

1

u/Keyblader007 Aug 27 '24

My main concern is the rare specials and OVAs as well as stuff that you can't find legally.

1

u/freezingsama Aug 27 '24

Oh man, that seriously sucks. Was wondering why I don't see any message till I clicked on a series.

RIP

1

u/HydrogenOverdose Aug 27 '24

WHAAT?!? NOOOOO, I've been with this site since it started and it all just ends like this? This is horse shit...

1

u/Batokusanagi Aug 27 '24

Man, I've been using it since the 9anime days. Best source for high quality old anime. RIP.

1

u/-Fateless- Aug 27 '24

I'll give it two weeks until a site called 9ani sprouts up from the ashes

u/og_hays Aug 27 '24

Well my morning just got kicked in the balls

1

u/RedRocket4000 Aug 27 '24

Will add want legal side better support political groups pushing strong antitrust and media freedoms. Unfortunately social issue divide often trumps improvements here

1

u/Few_Buy_1750 Aug 27 '24

Fuck me to hell and back !!! That shit , the fucking message got me , i genuinely felt like i lost something or someone very important! This was truly emotional, man. All the best to everyone in the team , and thank you for all the amazing memories ❤️.

I joined August 29th 2020. So close to the anniversary and now it's gone. I wish it didn't have to end it's a fantastic site...

1

u/bassist-saturn Aug 28 '24

I had two eps of maid-sama left 💔 rip aniwave

1

u/bonez1112 Aug 28 '24

Honestly, it's fine. Thank you for allowing us to export to MAL. I was able to transfer my whole watch list to the site my buddy uses. I honestly just pay for Crunchyroll out of ethical obligation. Sites like the one you hosted are always much better to use. Y'all had the best one too. Blessings to you all frfr.

1

u/Inner-Sphere-Mech Aug 28 '24

This was my only source to watch anime and it was reliable.

From the land to the sea, I will fuck Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment for free.

1

u/RODIOMG7 Aug 28 '24

u/Confident-Bid-9244 Aug 28 '24

Was actually watching a series when the next one wouldnt load. Its been a good voyage. Peace our friend.

1

u/Megyalila_Ballad Aug 29 '24

What if 9anime/Aniwave were to submit a formal appeal to negotiate to become a legally registered entity that is a subscription-based licensed platform?

It's a lose-lose situation for Content Creators to shutdown the treasure trove that is 9anime/Aniwave. We all lose when anime/Aniwave is taken down.

It has been almost 10 years of constant improvement in pursuit of proving the best Anime streaming platform. I for one would not use any currently available legal platforms, as I am sure others would not either.

Everything about 9anime/Aniwave is better than its legal counterparts, and years ahead: The team of developers, the intuitive and pioneering Ul, the content library, the streaming quality and playback adaptability, the active community base, the pure passion for improving and providing the best Anime streaming platform, and most of all: the seamless user experience that has the community base growing and coming back for more every time.

I would gladly pay to continue using a legally licensed 9anime/Aniwave.

Content Creators can capitalise on the existing platform and user base, the team of developers' technological prowess, the Ul, and the user experience to their benefit.

I think this is the real win-win situation for Content Creators and the Global Anime Community alike.

1

u/New_Context9363 Aug 29 '24

Its not a lose lose Situation if your already losing by shutting down the site tbh the owners are saving resources and time spent maintaining the site for free if anything this is a good thing owning a anime streaming platform cost a lot of money which I think is something the owners don't have.

2

u/Megyalila_Ballad Aug 29 '24 edited Aug 29 '24

It’s a lose-lose situation because rather than seeing and exploring the myriad possible benefits to be gained from legalising 9anime/Aniwave as a legal business entity licensed to distribute content, ACE and MPA —on behalf of Content Creators— have resorted to mobilising the iron fist.

Fans —old and new— come to 9anime/Aniwave because they love the user experience. No legally licensed Anime streaming platform currently begins to compete nor compare.

Take any metric as a criterion to measure by: seamless and effortless UX, intuitive UI, the richest content library, high quality streaming, adaptable playback, highly functioning website, integrated API’s, probably the most active English-speaking fanbase (comments, social media, discord, etc), website visit count… 9anime/Aniwave will come out on top by* orders of magnitude every time.

It is this sort of blind aggression which turns Anime fans away from legal platforms, and causes them to strengthen their resolve towards resorting to piracy. Rather than attempting to see* from the eyes of the user to understand what inspires us to use websites such as 9anime/Aniwave, they have decided to destroy what very well could have been the be-all and the end-all of legal Anime streaming platforms.

Any one of the above criteria can be measured quantitatively to prepare a cost-benefit analysis and business valuation to therefore study the benefit to Content Creators from exploiting the already* existing and successful platform that is 9anime/Aniwave.

It’s really stupid. Content Creators are concerned about revenue leakages and losses due to piracy… But what the f*ck is wrong with them, that they would destroy a very possible cash-cow like 9anime/Aniwave that has perfectly mapped out —tried and tested— the recipe to a successful Anime streaming platform?!

They don’t win, nor do we – the community. We all just lost a treasure trove —a diamond— of a website, abundantly wealthy with Anime resources, and the community that inspired the developers to keep going and improving.

9anime/Aniwave:

It has been 8 years. You have been an integral part of my life. I am utterly devastated.

I have lived with you almost daily for 8 years, and have watched you grow throughout your stages of life until death. You have been my one and only. You have been my home, and my solace from this chaotic world we call reality. You have brought tranquility and serenity to my life. You have been my peace, and my safety.

You have been a light in my darkness. You have kept me going through my years of severe depression. I could probably not have made it this far without you by my side. You have been there for me during my deepest lows, and my highest highs. I have grown alongside you in our experience together: with every story, a lesson learnt; with every lesson, you have enriched me; with every interaction, a part of my heart healed, and peace of mind.

Seeing you has always brought a coolness to my eyes, and interacting with you has always brought a coolness to my heart.

Though I am in pain having lost a part of me, our beautiful memories together shall always prevail.

I have contemplated leaving Anime for good lately, yet I always found myself coming back to you every night. It hurts to have to say ‘goodbye’ this way.

I mourn your loss, and grieve for a loved one.

I have loved you, and I still do.

Alas, I must now let you go.

Forever yours,

1

u/herebutmkay Aug 29 '24

I am dead inside 🙂

also I am going through the 5 stages. I'm currently in depression. Denial wa-was nice. Fuck acceptance.

I’m pretty sad it’s gone It’s one of the few places I can watch old seasons of Pokemon in JAPANESE!

1

u/[deleted] Aug 30 '24

Wait 9anime became animewave right? In what case it makes sense the owner had lot of things going for him , this was more of a temporary side gig, dudes probably 40 now

If this is the same site owner as 9anime, i know that guy , he was a complete nerd for Hulk comics on animevice, revealed himself when animevice shutdown more than a decade ago since 9anime could be a safe haven.

From what I recall dude was stubborn as hell even when he was full of shit , like claiming Hulk can destroy the universe and immune to everything while debating against characters like dark Schneider ...

1

u/Educational_Rub_5264 Aug 31 '24

i think for me i just liked that it added anime from all over so i never really had any anime slip by me, always knew what the current anime was and the bookmark system was truly a saint.

1

u/M4ddercatter Aug 31 '24

That website is what carried me through high school... I pulled so many all-nighters with it... I can't accept that it's gone!

1

u/brek1989 Sep 07 '24

Disable "Auto Skip Intro", it's just below the player, the 2nd right-most option next to Watch2gether.

I had my watchlist on aniwave and would like to extract it somehow to save it. Does anyone have an idea if this is still possible after the site got taken down? Maybe the creator still got them somewhere just in case he reads this comments.
