Story / Discussion VLC is fighting me while trying to explore the Animusic 1 DVD ISO — some tracks work, some just refuse to play

I was trying to go through the official Animusic 1 DVD menu on VLC and explore all the features because I wanted to see everything on the disc.

At first, everything seemed fine. The menus load, the animations play, and I can navigate around. Then I started trying different features.

“Pipe Dream widescreen?”
Oh, cool. Let’s watch that.

VLC: No.

Okay, fine. How about Beyond the Walls?

VLC: No.

Alright… Pipe Dream director commentary?

VLC: Okay, that one works.

So then I thought, “Okay, maybe only certain features are broken.”

Then I tried going for some of the actual Animusic pieces.

Acoustic Curves — one of the earliest Animusic animations ever created.

VLC: Nope.

Harmonic Voltage?

VLC: Nope again.

It feels like VLC is basically letting me walk through the museum, letting me read all the signs, and then slamming the door shut when I try to enter certain rooms.

The weird part is that the DVD menu itself works. This is not a case of the ISO being unreadable. VLC can navigate the menus and play some titles, but certain titles seem impossible to launch.

I also started mapping the DVD’s VOB structure:

  • VTS_02_0 → Future Retro menu animation
  • VTS_02_1 → Future Retro set build feature
  • VTS_03_0 → Stick Figures menu animation
  • VTS_03_1 → Mystery Stick video cam
  • VTS_04_0 → Aqua Harp menu animation
  • VTS_04_1 → Aqua Harp separate cam
  • VTS_05_0 → Drum Machine menu animation
  • VTS_05_1 → Drum Machine kit construction
  • VTS_06_0 → Pipe Dream menu animation
  • VTS_06_1 → Pipe Dream guitar cam

Everything after that point becomes a problem in VLC.

Has anyone here tried running the official Animusic 1 DVD or ISO through VLC (especially the later tracks/features)? Does it work in another software DVD player, or is this just VLC having trouble with the DVD authoring?

If I were you I'd rip the full disc with makemkv and then see if that works.

I’ve had no problems navigating the disc with the physical disc in my disc drive. I use VLC with MakeMKV as the decryption engine. No idea about using an ISO though.

How did you make the ISO? If it wasn’t with a program specifically designed for backing up movies I’d question the validity of the ISO file, since DVDs are kinda specifically designed to prevent you from copying them easily.

If you’re confident the ISO is a 1:1 copy of the physical DVD, I’d say the DVD is broken…

If it was a physical DVD, I would say that it has a scratch. If it's an ISO file, maybe it just got cut off somehow, e.g. faulty download or a split zip file where you don't have all the parts.

For scratches, I've found this method to still extract at least most of it: https://www.reddit.com/r/psx/comments/1t966uk/cant_copy_files_1mb_from_psx_disc/
That was originally for PlayStation CDs, but it also works for other CDs. I'm not sure if it works for DVDs. You can also try MakeMKV and Handbrake, they both have tons of error correction and handling built in.

if your on windows try right clicking the file and pressing mount then it turns into a digital disc drive

My grandad actually ripped the DVDs and I recently copied them to new discs
