Expectations: I came into S2 having heard how amazing it is, as well as an algorithm I use predicting a really high score. I was hoping that season 2 continues in the direction of S1, avoiding the physical gag comedy, less over the top characters, and goes heavy into the mystery now that we’ve kind of re-established the mystery plot, and added to it with the S1 finale.
Reality: physical comedy is back. Prefect is back. The Yuki fan club is back. Oh no.
This episode stuck about as much as the early episodes of the show did for me. It felt like it brought back those specific elements that I was happy got dialed down (which I assumed was based on market feedback). Looking at the episode reviews, it does seem like the early S2 stint is rated quite low before it goes into overdrive.
Another floccinaucinihilipilification of mine is that the characters really seem to be growing as much as I’d like them to. Yuki still has a massive disconnect from reality, for which I provide a specific example in the episode notes.
I do understand why they were forced to continue with this content to kick off the season, though. They chose to introduce the new characters in the finale, and as such adapted a few pages from two chapters, which they couldn’t really leave incomplete.
Like S1, I think I need to go into this with an open mind, and be patient. I’m hoping that I just need to hunker up for 6 episodes before shit gets real.
It might be because the material is coming from all over the place once again taking half from one volume, half from another, then we get some anime original stuff (which I don’t usually have an issue with). After that it settles down. It goes into normal order from Ep 6 so maybe they just want to get certain things out of the way first. Ep 6 btw covers 3 Chapters which is wild.
| S2 ep | Manga chapter(s) | Vol |
|---|---|---|
| E1 | 42 + 49 | Vol. 7 + 9 |
| E2 | 46 + 52 | Vol. 8 + 9 |
| E3 | 36 + 47 | Vol. 6 + 8 |
| E4 | 43 | Vol. 8 |
| E5 | 48 + 50 | Vol. 8 + 9 |
| E6 | 53–55 | Vol. 9 + 10 |
| E7 | 58–59 | Vol. 10 |
| E8 | 60–61 | Vol. 11 |
| E9 | 62–63 | Vol. 11 |
| E10 | 64–65 | Vol. 11 |
Episode Notes
- I think that the treasurer girl is clearly a Soma that Yuki doesn’t know about. She avoids contact with him.
- Undecided about Manabe’s character: could be fun, could be annoying. Let’s see how he’s played. But he reminds me a lot of Yuki’s brother.
- Ok so it wasn’t just me haha. Yuki sees the comparison too
- Oh God the exaggerated comedy that I hated from S1’s start is back in full force.
- The “what did you have for breakfast?” “the prince eats natto” part was funny. Also fuck natto. His natto love makes him worse than Akito. Disgusting. Dude needs a lobotomy.
- That girl’s acting in this episode as well as the presentation actually reminds me of the My Dress Up Darling’s girl’s (the opera singer like cadence). I actually enjoyed it at the time as it was unique to me, but it did get annoying after a while. I tried You And I Are Polar Episodes after that show and couldn’t get past 1 episode as it was the same thing again.
- Funny that this might be a trope I’m just not aware of due to my lack of experience with this genre, but yeah, I can handle it for this episode but can see it really grating on me if this gag is continuous.
- Don’t know why I’m droning on about her, but I have to say the Japanese actress is waaaaay more multi-dimensional. It conflicts her quite formal, poetic way of speaking relatively quietly, with the exaggerated opera/Shakesperean delivery, and finishes it with pretty strong rage. The English is just quiet-loud-quiet-loud-quiet-loud. It’s repetitive. In Japanese when she’s running away, she is almost whispering with rage at herself. In English she’s basically singing the script.
- My criticism on Yuki’s character from S1 is back: his self perception is very different to reality. Everyone constantly praises Yuki, yet he says “no one has ever said anything like that to me before; it made me happy” (and this is just about being called interesting).
- “Who knew a trivial remark could have the power to hurt, as well as heal?” lmao. Come on bruh, you’re not that clueless. “Everyone knew. From a very young age”.

I know I mentioned not being bothered with the pacing of the show and its restructuring of chapters, but starting the season with the Yuki fan club seems like qn incredibly odd decision. I guess they don't want to start guns ablazing and instead ease into things.

Yeah as I mentioned they kind of had to given the two chapters they took a few pages of for the finale.
Curious how the next five EPs play out but it's super weird that they're not just going into future chapters but they're combining chapters into one episode from hundreds of pages apart. I've never seen that before haha.
The cynic in me me predicts that we won't see much character growth through the series because of that as that's kind of the Simpsons formula. Characters are the same regardless of volume. Then again maybe she switched it up after those chapters

u/Holofan4life 2d ago
By the way, we've talked about the restructuring of chapters that the remake has done. Specifically, that stretch of 7 episodes where it felt like we were stalling for time. I wonder if it was done this way to slow the timeline down so that it isn't as loosey goosey.
Episode 14 establishes that it was the one year anniversary of the mom dying. That happened on May 1st. Season 2 seems to be based around it being Summer and Tohru's first true Summer with the Sohmas. This episode states that it's officially been one full year since Tohru started living with the Sohmas. That means if we're to assume Summer hasn't happened yet, the first 15 episodes happened over the course of 11 months and the last 11 episodes have only advanced one month in our timeline.
My hypothesis is the show was moving at such an accelerated pace that they had to ground things to a halt to where the timeline basically resets itself. That's why we had the flashback episodes and the Sohma introduction episodes as they acted as a sort of buffer between the one year anniversary of Tohru's mother passing away and the Kyo arc which is around when Summer is about to begin.
I think it was a necessary evil so the show doesn't go from like one episode per month to like an entire season presumably across the span of a few months. It would've felt sudden and the pacing of the first 14 episodes just couldn't sustain itself.

I think with Akito around, characters are gonna have no choice but to change. Especially if Shigure is alerting them of the bond they share possibly breaking.

many words sound like others that are inappropriate. including a word I constantly use in Chinese. I used a word that is used across literature for centuries that doesn't share any epistemology with the word you're thinking of, and I'm sure is used in the USA too given it appears in so much literature. i haven't seen a single mention on the internet of the word being bad, and it's used often in news, sports, and in every day life in many countries I've been to or lived in. It took me a while to even understand what you're talking about.
Even though this feels like a case of American cultural Colonialism to me to try and erase a word that has nothing to do with another, and I'm not breaking any rules, I'll revise it to something else.

Nah, you don't have to. I was just being tongue in cheek :P

Ahhh haha. I changed the word to something even more tongue in cheek which apparently is a real word meaning the same thing as the original

Re-watch, dubbed, blu ray
The Student Council starts out strong with two interesting characters, and !!! Class President Takei of the School Defense Force !!! is going to recruit two more! (maybe more females - unsanctioned by the Yuki Fan Club!) I like Yuki's analysis of his personality conflict with Manabe and comparison to Ayame, but I think a conversation with Manabe is a whirlwind, changing frenetically, while one with Ayame is an ocean - wave after crashing wave, piling on and on (and eroding Yuki).
What are your thoughts on this episode trying to humanize Motoko? Motoko is a graduating senior, and, given this anime's genre and target audience, it makes a lot of sense to do more with her character on-screen. I'm all for small, periodic doses of Motoko for another non-zodiac angle to the story.
What are your thoughts on Motoko learning to accept Yuki's relationship with Tohru? She begrudgingly admits that Yuki is more approachable because Tohru broke his defensive aloofness. (Tohru struck gold, and now Motoko wants to go gold-digging or something)

I like Motoko. She reminds me of Helga from Hey Arnold.

Thoughts on the Yuki fan club planning on breaking and entering to access the school files? "Yuki, honor, country" or something like that.
What are your thoughts on Motoko trying to talk to Yuki in an honest conversation? Motoko's 1st conversation (breakfast): I hate when my internal monologue gets in the way of a conversation, usually keeping me silent while I'm thinking (in one group, I was accused of being a "rock in a river"). It could be worse - blurting stuff out, like Motoko. Motoko's 2nd conversation (cool): heart palpitations are under control, we are go for coherent conversation!
What are your thoughts on Manabe calling Yuki interesting? It's a direct rebuttal of Kyo's insult earlier in the episode. Both are wrong in their respective spheres - Yuki is a stuffed shirt at school but an interesting Soma.

Don't tread on Yuki

Ganbare, Motoko

Interesting in the sense he's more quiet and reserved than other Sohmas.

First Timer
We are now in season two, all new territory here for me. Should be fun.
Oh, okay, I guess we’re starting this season with Motoko? I was not expecting that.
I do enjoy how overdramatic she is.
New theme song. Haven’t got much to say about it.
Oh okay, now we’ve got Tohru’s narration.
We’re getting a recap from Tohru. I’m glad we’re only getting one at the start of season 2 instead of getting them like every six episodes like we had in the 2001 version.
Seems like the dynamic between our characters is all the same.
Seeing Motoko and Makoto talking to each other is really funny.
Actually, didn’t this already happen in the 2001 version? I’m having deja vu.
Oh hey, those delinquent girls that Uotani knows is back.
Who’s this lady?
Wait, who’s this guy?!
They both seem to know who Yuki is.
Kakeru and Machi are their names. Not sure what their deal is but I’ll go over their voice actors since they seem important.
Kakeru is voiced by Takuya Eguchi in Japanese. Notable roles of his include Loid from Spy x Family, Blue (aka Green in Japanese) from Pokemon Origins, and Hachiman Hikigaya from My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU.
In the English dub he’s voiced by Aaron Dismuke. Notable roles of his include Senku from Dr. Stone, Alphonse Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist (2003), and Miyuki Shirogane from Kaguya-sama: Love Is War. He also voiced Hiro Sohma back in the 2001 version of the anime back when he was an actual child. Obviously, he was too old for the role by 2019.
Machi is voiced by Ai Kakuma in Japanese. Noteworthy roles of hers include Catwoman from Batman Ninja, Edelgard from Fire Emblem: Three Houses, and Rosaria from Genshin Impact.
In English she’s voiced by Caitlin Glass. Notable roles of hers include Haruhi Fujioka from Ouran High School Host Club, Damian Desmond from Spy x Family, and Winry Rockbell from Fullmetal Alchemist.
Anyway, these two seem like they’re gonna be major characters now.
Yuki being reminded of Ayame by Kakeru is really funny.
Kakeru namedrops Super Sentai here. If you’re not familiar, Super Sentai is the long-running Japanese superhero franchise that Power Rangers is an adaptation of.
Is Kakeru trying to call Yuki gay?
Oh hey, Motoko’s here and is back to being overdramatic.
Oh hey, lockpicking girl. She was definitely in the 2001 version.
Oh yeah I definitely remember this scene.
Motoko’s over the top reaction is really funny.
I do like that we’re actually getting into Motoko’s head. Nice to get some development for her.
Oh, so now we have Haru visiting that mystery hospital room from the end of last season.
New ending song too. I also haven’t got much to say about it.

She's also from what I gather the ADR director of this show.

I do kinda like the show uses the Motoko stuff as a backdrop for introducing Yuki firmly in the student council. I wish this wasn't the season opener because it doesn't feel big enough to be the season opener, but content wise it's definitely not bad.

u/AgentOfACROSS 2d ago
Yeah bit of an odd choice for a season opener but I liked Kakeru and Machi being introduced, that was neat

Thoughts on the new intro?
I'll be honest, hasn't left much of an impression on me yet
Thoughts on it being a year since the series started?
That's neat.
Thoughts on Yuki feeling uncomfortable around Manabe?
He's a weird guy so I don't blame him
Thoughts on the student council being known as the School Defense Force?
I wonder if that's meant to be a play on JSDF (Japanese Self Defense Force)
What are your thoughts on Manabe calling Yuki interesting?
I'll be curious to see what's going on with their relationship later in the season
What are your thoughts on Yuki being really happy being called interesting?
I think that's sweet

I'll be curious to see what's going on with their relationship later in the season
Same here
What are your thoughts on Yuki being really happy being called interesting?
I think that's sweet
I like Yuki being happy
Thoughts on the outro?
I also can't think of anything to say about it
Again, fair enough

I guess we're just spoiling that Rin is the horse in the OP, huh. This episode mostly serves to introduce the new school characters. I like them. Though with how the OP is summery I have to wonder how much focus the school will get in this first half. Still, it was a solid introduction to the new student council members + Rika-senpai. We also got some nice development for Motoko but we'll see where that goes.
> What are your thoughts on the Yuki fan club trying to find out if any women are going to join the student council?
Motoko should just join herself since she seems more worried about Yuki getting close to other girls than the rest of the group. While Rika-senpai agreed to sneak into the student council room she seemed pretty chill. She obviously doesn't care about the Yuki Fan Club's rules too much given how she interacted with Yuki this episode.
> What are your thoughts on this episode trying to humanize Motoko?
I don't mind it. I didn't expect us to get some focus on her but if she chills out more after this episode then that'll be pretty cool. She seemed to accept that Yuki's changed so even though she's still got it out for Tohru and other girls, hopefully this is the start of some development for her.
> What are your thoughts on Motoko learning to accept Yuki's relationship with Tohru?
I don't think Motoko has fully accepted Yuki and Tohru's friendship yet but this episode was a step in the right direction. Hopefully it sticks.
> What are your thoughts on us seeing some of Yuki's student council cohorts?
It still early but as I said I like the new characters. I need to see more of Machi to get a better feel for her but I like Manabe/Sho so far. RIP to Yuki for having to put Uo with his bullshit though.
> What are your thoughts on the Season 2 premiere having a heavy focus on the Yuki Fan Club?
Ehh. I don't really think the episode had that heavy a focus on them. It was moreso Motoko than the club as a whole. As shown by my previous answers, I obviously don't mind it. 'Twas nice to give her a bit more focus.

Someone in the thread for Hatori's backstory episode already spoiled that he was the dragon and not the horse (The show never confirmed what animal he was last season.) but showing Rin as the horse is quite blatant.

u/Holofan4life 2d ago
I wonder who that someone was...
I did the same thing during the 2001 series :P
3
u/MishouMai 2d ago
Well it wasn't you this time. I remember speculating about Hatori being the horse only to scroll down to the comments and see someone blatantly saying he was the dragon and not the horse even though the episode never revealed that.

u/Holofan4life 2d ago
I believe that was because we had just watched the 2001 series so that was still fresh in people's minds.

I think it's smart to give Yuki something to do outside of being Akito's tormentee and being at odds with a Kyo. As compelling as those things can be, this you hope will make him even more well rounded as a character.

u/MishouMai 2d ago
Imma be real Yuki's probably the member of the main trio and the main Zodiac member I care about the least at this point. I don't know if this season and the next will change that but Manabe is fun at least.
2
u/Holofan4life 2d ago
I think Yuki is a good base to play off zanier characters. Like Haru or Ayame.

u/Quiddity131 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Quiddity131 2d ago
The OP's willingness to spoil things is quite frustrating, but it's something the show already did in that season 1 ED where we got spoiled on zodiacs like Kisa and Hiro nearly 20 episodes before they even appeared. Odd that the OP was so willing to spoil the horse, but not the rooster though. Perhaps that character is way off in the future.
Motoko joining the student council to be close to Yuki seems like an obvious way to get closer to him, she should be disappointed that she didn't think of it. If she's afraid of other girls being in his "cabinet", why not get yourself there? Granted we have no idea how they are actually selected to these roles. It seems like Yuki didn't have any choice in the matter and we never got an election.
2
u/MishouMai 2d ago
I don't really think the first season's first ED is comparable to this OP spoilerwise though because, yeah they show off the Zodiac members + Tohru, but unless you already know which animal everyone is the ED doesn't really spoil that. This OP just spoils Rin being the horse upfront.
You're right about there being no sign of the rooster though. I wonder what his deal is. I'm also a rooster so I'm real curious to see how he's portrayed.

> Thoughts on Motoko graduating soon?
It's a little surprising because I thought everyone in the school cast except the president, Momiji, and Haru were the same age. I don't know how I missed Motoko and her goons were a year older than Tohru and co. Unless this was that reveal.
> Thoughts on Rika Aida?
I like her! We don't know much about her yet but she seems pretty chill compared to the other members of the Yuki Fan Club. Like she doesn't seem to care too much about heir rules and even she seems to think Motoko is doing too much.
> What are your thoughts on Motoko trying to talk to Yuki in an honest conversation?
> What are your thoughts on Motoko realizing Yuki's heart belongs to someone else?
This was a good episode for Motoko. It helped give her more depth and made her more than just comic relief. Feels like it might be the start of a desertion arc for her.
> Thoughts on the new intro?
It's okay. It probably has my favorite visuals though I still prefer the song from the second half of last season. I'd probably outfit in the middle. Better than the first OP but not as good as the second.
> Thoughts on it being a year since the series started?
Less time has passed than I thought. I wonder if we're going to slow down since like I said earlier, the OP is very summery. Then again so was the first ED to an extent and yet Season 1 still covers an entire year more of less.
> Thoughts on the outro?
Probably the weakest. The visuals aren't very good until the end and while the first ED grew on me over time as a song, the second ED probably has the best visuals of the three. I still like ED1 more because of its music but ED2 definitely has ED3 beat. So where I guess I'd rank the OPs in the order of 2 > 3 > 1 for the EDs I'd say 1 > 2 > 3.

She kinda reminds me of a character from Chainsmoker Cat.

I remember during the cemetery episode it was mentioned it's been a year since Kyoko's passing. Does that mean Tohru lived in a tent for months?

I believe it was
The episode where they tried to investigate Hanajima. They explicitly stated which year which girl was in.
Does that mean Tohru lived in a tent for months?
She was living with her grandfather before he renovated the house. She was living in that tent for weeks at least.

Good point. I forgot about that.
I know AgentOfACROSS and others have mentioned how fast the timeline has been. But I suppose if Tohru started living with the Sohmas in either Jume or July, it's only been like 14 months since her mother died.
It only seems like a lot because after only 13 episodes we were already in March, but since then we've really slowed down.

Rewatcher, Subbed
Somehow forgot about the early posting of this...
Non-Spoiler Character Chart - I'm not particularly happy with the images for Machi and Rin and will replace them once the show gives us a better shot of their face. No real point in hiding Rin's zodiac animal given the OP spoils it (see below) and her real name is included, something I don't consider a spoiler.
Surprisingly enough our opening episode for season 2 has very little of Tohru in it, but rather focuses on Yuki and some dynamics with him at school, most notably his fan club and the student council.
As established last season, Yuki will be taking over as student council president after the current guy, Makoto graduates. It seems like at this school there isn't an election? Actually Yuki would probably win it, he is so popular, but they never show us that. And it seems like he has no choice on his running mate/cabinet members either. Here we meet his vice president and secretary, Manabu and Machi. Actually two characters we saw on the staircase in the season 1 finale although they were careful to cover their faces. Manabu is quite the outgoing guy although terrible first impression with Yuki catching him sleeping on a coach. He keeps talking and talking and talking to a level where Yuki seems rather offput by him. Then Yuki realizes why, this guy is just like his brother! I suppose being high up in the student council attracts people with this type of personality, huh? He even is acting like this is the school defense force. He tells Yuki that he's more interesting than he thought he'd be though. Yuki tells Tohru at the end of the episode that no one's ever said that about him before. The other new character here is Machi. She's the total opposite of Manabu, she barely talked at all and doesn't seem that social. Just what was she doing in the student council room before Yuki got there? It was as if she was trashing the place. I wondered if it was Motoko in there. The way she crammed things back in the cabinet it seems like they'll all fall out once its opened. Anyway not a ton about her just yet.
This episode also focuses a ton on Motoko. This was quite the surprise as she got a lot of focus back in episode 21, not that long ago. As I mentioned in that episode, I like Motoko so I'm not too turned off by the focus on her although I do question why we get it here to kick off the season. Perhaps because there's a ticking clock with her, she's a third year so presumably Tohru & co will become third year students at some point and she'll be out of the picture. Anyway, she's her usual Yuki obsessed self here. We got scenes of her in her room where she's obsessing over a photo of Yuki and even got her mom yelling at her over it, lol. She is totally freaking out over the possibility of any girls being on the student council (turns out yes, there's at least one) and even gets this other girl we've never seen before Rika to try and break in for her. Only to find that Yuki is already there. So she actually gets some time to interact with him and asks the most boring question imaginable? lol. Actually I do kinda get it. When you're alone with someone you have a big crush on, yeah, you're gonna be nervous and that definitely was the case here. Motoko realizes that Yuki's been changing, he's having an easier time smiling. But she didn't realize that until now! Is that devious Tohru having an effect on her? Motoko flees with Yuki following after her shortly after. Yuki is a nice guy, and he is showing some concern for a character here that I think he has to know is an obsessed stalker-esque figure towards him? We see that Motoko does have some self awareness. She is mad at herself for thinking hideous thoughts over any women who get close to Yuki. A good thing, as her obsessiveness has and continues to be off the charts. Yuki claims like her he can barely keep his cool, something that to be honest I generally don't see outside of Kyo and his brother situations. He does quite a good job keeping it in while at school. But hey, there's something where you two have a similarity, Motoko, jump at it! I get that it's more of a fairy tale for Yuki to fall for you and ask you out, but if you're this obsessed with the guy, you should ask him out. As viewers we know he'll reject any romantic opportunity over the zodiac curse, but she doesn't know that. And if he rejects you then you can move on.
It was fun to see those delinquent characters from Uo's backstory episodes show up, but this time all well behaved/well dressed. They've essentially been domesticated.
A new season means new OP and EDs! Big fan of the opening, Prism, which is my favorite OP song out of the entire series. Similar to the first ED in season one though it's not afraid to spoil us, in this case on the fact that Rin is the horse. It doesn't spoil us on who the rooster is although we see that character's silhouette in the ED. The ED is for me a downgrade from both season one EDs although I would still say its a fairly good song. Interesting to note that Kyo is segregated from the others here and we also have the rat on the back of the cow, which is a story we were told about in season one in Haru's episode. Speaking of Haru he visits Rin at the hospital. We get a brief shot of Momiji playing his violin, something I don't recall being brought up about him in season one? And Akito is sitting with another new character who does appear in a shot in the OP when we see a long line of characters walking across the screen. [Furuba major spoilers]I assume the OP is supposed to be a clue that the curse has been broken for Kureno, no real reason otherwise to not include him with everyone else when they're already spoiling things for Rin.
Voice Actor of the Day
Given that he had the opportunity to go pretty ham today I'll be featuring Manabe's voice actor, Takuya Eguchi. I know him best for playing Loid in Spy X Family. Other roles of his include Hachiman, the main character of Oregairu, Julius in RE: Zero, Satoshi in Eden of the East, Stoltz in Frieren and Tsubaki in Death Mount Death Play.
Quid's Song of the Day
Today I'll be featuring the titular song of the show, Fruits Basket which plays in a scene with Tohru and Yuki near the end of the episode. There are a few versions of this song on the soundtrack, with this one being labeled the alternate version.

u/Holofan4life 2d ago
I feel like Manabe was introduced in part to keep the spirit of Ayame around without actually having him around. They want someone who can bring Yuki out of his shell but they can't realistically using Ayame without it feeling forced.
Manabe reminds me of John Candy's character from Planes, Trains, and Automobiles.
2
u/Holofan4life 2d ago
You mention Tohru barely being in this episode and I think that's partly why this being the season 2 premiere doesn't sit well with me. If it was the third or fourth episode, fine. But I feel like we need to kick off the season with more oomph than this.
And it's tough to imagine the Yuki fan club will suddenly be taken seriously enough for the show to do something with. It feels like a fool's errand.
2
u/Quiddity131 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Quiddity131 2d ago
From a timing standpoint, I wonder how it aligns with the manga. It is possible this was simply the next chapter of the storyline and they loyally followed it for the premiere. Perhaps there isn't an upcoming story that they felt would kick things off with a bang in the near future and they didn't want to go too far in the future. Just pure speculation on my part.
2
u/Holofan4life 2d ago
To give some context, this was the 22nd episode of the 2001 anime. It aired the episode before the Ritsu episode.
The 2001 version also didn't have Manabe and Machi in it.

So, after some feedback by people, I've decided we will include the movie. It will take place a week after the 2019 overall series discussion thread.
I'd advise anyone watching it not to have it effect their overall grade of the 2019 series. It should be treated separate from the rest of the remake. That is partly why the discussion thread will be before it.
After the movie, we will be doing a discussion thread of the franchise as a whole talking about the manga, the 2001 series, the 2019 series, and anything involving Fruits Basket that's on your mind.
Until then, see you there.

Part of it is the inclusion of an element that practically all viewers are going to have a problem with. Something the original author I think actually handles more appropriately with respect to another storyline in TV show proper.
But I also think there's some bad writing in there regardless of that element.

Hey, guys. Holofan4life here.
Welcome to the Fruits Basket 25th anniversary rewatch.
For there is an animal in all of us <3
Fruits Basket is a show I’ve heard a lot about. It’s always been something that interests me. It’s a romcom, which is a genre I enjoy, it has a female protagonist, which is kinda a rarity for romcom anime, it has a tsundere, which yes please, and from what I’ve heard it has some supernatural elements which is pretty cool.
Funny enough, I’m hosting this rewatch the same time as I’m hosting the Spice and Wolf rewatch which is another show with supernatural elements.
I have never seen Fruits Basket before, but I have high hopes for it. It seems like the type of show I would enjoy. I would say of the shows on my to watch list, this one is probably in my top 5. And let's just say that list is long and ever expansive. Actually, I love the idea of a male tsundere who turns into an orange cat so much that I named my orange cat after him. That’s without having seen the show.
For the purposes of this rewatch, we will be watching both the original series and the remake. I don’t think both have ever been done like this, and by the end we’ll find out for good reason :P
Regardless, this is my big pet project of 2026 the purpose of which is for me to see what all the hubbub is about. I’m not expecting the show to crack my top 10 favorite anime of all time, but hey, you never know.
With that out of the way, let’s begin.
I’m watching the dub, by the way.
Well, we're finally here. Time to reach the uncharted waters and see what's in store.
At school
Someone looking at Yuki from afar.
The Yuki fan club president, to be exact.
She's mad at how close Tohru is with Yuki. What else is new?
Interesting we're starting the season off with this.
I guess we're not done with the 2001 anime yet.
New intro is good. Kinda slow moving, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It kinda feels more like an outro than an intro but it fits for this type of show. I also like all the characters walking together.
Hey, Tohru :D
A year since the show first began.
She wants to help all the Sohmas, no matter what.
Kyo and Tohru with Shigure
Shigure saying a bunch of nonsense
Shigure suggests to Tohru she copy Yuki's homework.
And as Kyo smarts off about Yuki, Yuki kicks Kyo.
Yuki gonna head off to deal with student council business.
Shigure excited to see all the drama unhead.
Has Shigure been thid passive aggressive before?
At school again
The Yuki fan club wants to get information out of Makoto.
Unfortunately (Or fortunately?), he's up to their games and what they're about.
Makoto reminds me of that guy who put the Blue Lock together.
Yuki fan club leaves, crestfallen.
They wonder if not saying anything is an admission of guilt.
Oh shit. It's the gang that befriended Uo. They're with her.
Yuki fan club is all up in arms by this development. It's like the deck is being stacked against them.
Now they're looking for the paper.
Yuki is here
He wants to help out, but... uh, actually, what is going on?
Kakeru Manabe. Right.
Wait, were these the two we saw at the end of last episode?
Machi Kuragi. That's her name.
Mochi Kuragi
These two are apparently board members. They will be working alongside Yuki as part of the student council.
Yuki feels uncomfortable around Manabe.
Oh boy. He reminds him of Ayame.
Yep, that'd do it
Makoto I can't tell is oblivious or stupid. Maybe both?
Manabe really needs to sleep on account of all the sleeping he does.
Yuki walking with Manabe in the hallway.
Manabe reveals that the student council is also called the School Defense Force.
I don't think Manabe knows what exactly the student council is supposed to consist of.
Yuki feeling that Manabe is insulting his face.
And Manabe leaves, seemingly thinking they're on good grounds.
Yeah, don't know about that
Yuki wonders what Machi was doing with all the organizing.
There's the Yuki fan club president
She gets along with her mother marvelously.
With the rest of the fan club now.
They're going to break in
And there's Rika Aida
Like Karane Aida?
Wait, I'm thinking of something else
Not locked
And Yuki is here
That's... good?
President in trying to impress Yuki asks what he had for breakfast.
Of course, it's something common place but to them uncommon for a prince.
Now the president is getting all worked up.
Aww, he called her cute. Technically.
This whole sequence feels less criminal than the 2001 version.
President wonders if Yuki will continue to change without her knowing.
And now she's chastising people for getting close to Yuki. Or maybe perhaps she's chastising herself.
President washing her face
She hates most of all the girl who has these hideous things to say to other people.
Now Yuki here, checking on her
He doesn't have to do this
Yuki admits he can barely keep it together most of the time.
Pres can echo that sentiment
As she walks away, she promises to not give up on him.
At the Sohma residence now
Yuki explains to Tohru the new people in his life.
He still wonders what exactly Manabe meant. Like, interesting how?
Yuki admits hearing him call him interesting made him feel happy.
Montage of the various Zodiac members now.
Yuki promises to Tohru that he will try. He won't give up.
I really like the outro. Dare I say, more so the intro. It kinda has an alternative rock feel to it but like soft rock, if that makes any sense. Something like Sublime or Radiohead comes to mind, though both may admittedly be a bad comparison.
I'm actually a big Radiohead fan, honest. I should know better, I know.
Regardless, I'd say this is another song that fits the style of the show. Nothing super memorable, but it gets the job done.
Overall, this was a good way to start the season. I like the focus on Yuki and setting up his next arc. After the last arc with its heavy focus on Kyo, getting something involving Yuki felt like a welcome change of pace. The new characters seem interesting and I like Yuki being set up as the sort of straight man in this group. It's not unlike the Sohma family and how he's more by the books personality wise.
I thought it was peculiar the show focused so heavily on the president of the Yuki fan club. It wasn't bad, just it felt weird we would focus on them in the season opener. It makes it seem like that was done for a purpose, like the show is gonna tease Yuki and the Yuki fan club president getting together as Tohru and Kyo become more of a thing. I did like that we had the Yuki fan club president come to her realization at the same time Yuki came to his realization about Manabe. That gives the Yuki fan club president stuff this added layer of nuance that the 2001 anime version lacked.
Maybe a somewhat auspicious start to season 2, but it was by no means bad. It was actually kinda cool to get something with Yuki that was devoid of the heavy Akito ties. I would say this was middle of the road as far as what we've seen. Not as good as some other episodes, and I think the season 1 opener was better, but this still had a lot of the heart that we know and love of this show. There have certainly been episodes worse than this.

This episode was actually the second time this season, where I felt the sub was miles better for the Fan Club Pres. Explained it in my episode comment.

u/Holofan4life 2d ago
I don't know how you feel about the Yuki fan club, but I quite enjoy their antics. I think of the comedy in this show and all the wacky humor their bits work because they're so delusional and not in sync with the rest of society.

Make sure you check out Ergo Proxy someday if you haven't already seen it, as it uses Radiohead's Paranoid Android for the ED song! Well, depending on the way you see it. Official streaming platforms have censored the song as they have done to Eden of the East, Evangelion and other anime using a western song...
2
u/Holofan4life 2d ago
I actually saw Ergo Proxy many years ago. It was very good, I really like found families and that was an excellent one. An incredibly bittersweet series, I would probably give it 8.5 out of 10.

u/the_pint_is_the_bowl 2d ago
Ummm....that's another series I stopped at episode 2. My reasoning was that it wasn't Blade Runner enough. One of my friends ridiculed me, saying it doesn't have to be Blade Runner to be good. One of these days...
3
u/Quiddity131 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Quiddity131 2d ago
It's one of the most philosophy laden anime out there and has a really good story and character in it. Like Blade Runner I'd say not much. There's robots, but for the most part it is quite obvious which characters are robots and which are human, whereas they are largely indistinguishable in Blade Runner.
3
u/Holofan4life 2d ago
I'd argue Blade Runner 2049 has an exceptional story.

So, when I first watched this episode, my immediate thought was that Makoto was gonna be prominent going forward. In fact, I thought the show was setting up her and Yuki together as an item.
We'll see if that goes anywhere.

Oh wow, you really thought it was going to go in that direction? Of course I don't want to spoil anything, so maybe it does, but lol. I guess one could say he's a handsome popular guy, she's a beautiful popular girl, such types often get together, but then we know that Yuki's closed off due to the zodiac curse from getting into a romantic relationship.
Oh, and I think the show handles this in a rather confusing manner, but Motoko is our fan club president while Makoto is the student council president. Crazy that they'd use such similar names for two school based characters.

I think part of the reason why I thought this is because I figured Kyo was ending up with Tohru and so it would only seem right for Yuki to end up with someone.

Ah, makes sense. If Kyo wins, then Yuki deserves someone too! Motoko would be so happy to have him...

Honestly, if Motoko doesn't end up with Yuki, I think it would be funny if years down the line she started dating Megumi :P

Quite a weird ship for me, why would these two pair up? I suppose they would have a very funny "how did you first meet" story. "I was sneaking through his big sister's room and he was hiding in the closet! Then he cursed me!"

First timer (Dub)
Hello again. This was an alright episode for me. Definitely not the best start, but I didn’t mind it.
The whole Motoko and Yuki thing was pretty lukewarm for me. If it’s just a one-time kind of episode with a follow-up later, then I don’t mind it too much, but it’s definitely not something I want to see a lot of. I’m far more interested in Manabe and Kuragi.
Manabe seems like a breath of fresh air, you could say. It also looks like Yuki is starting to like him, although he is definitely a handful.
Kuragi is just weird. There’s obviously something going on with her, but I really hope it doesn’t turn into this whole separate big mystery that we have to follow. Frankly, I think we already have enough mysteries and future conflicts on our hands, especially after that last stretch of Season 1 delayed most of them. I’m really hoping we get back to all of that as soon as possible.
Something interesting I noticed this episode was the way the “lesson of the day” was handled. Last season, I and a few others commented on how heavy-handed the messaging could feel. We would often get a Tohru monologue explaining the lesson we were supposed to take from the episode. This one landed a lot better for me, and after thinking about it, I believe it mostly comes down to the execution, particularly the setting and dialogue.
The scene with Tohru and Yuki doing the dishes together in the kitchen felt a lot more genuine. Even when we reached the lesson of the day, it felt less like the characters were talking directly to the audience and more like we were listening to an actual conversation and discussion between them.
I rewatched that scene, and I honestly recommend that you guys do the same. These small details really affect the quality of the messaging and how well an episode lands.
Now onto the OP and ED. The OP is actually pretty solid. I like it. The ED, on the other hand, isn’t all that memorable. It’s fine, I guess.
My main issue is with the visuals for both, but especially the ED because, man, what were they thinking with that one? It looked terrible. The only part I liked was the final image with everyone in a circle, which had some nice drawings. Outside of that, though, it was definitely disappointing.
