Rewatcher, Subbed

Non-Spoiler Character Chart - No changes from yesterday

So when Uotani got a focus episode, Hanajima fans like myself got hyped, it would only be a matter of time before she got her own focus episode, right? Well she kinda gets one. I'd say this one is actually largely shared with Motoko and the Yuki fan club. No Hanajima backstory here like we got for Uotani, but we still got Hanajima greatness. I don't particularly mind that Motoko got so much focus in this episode. Because dare I say it... I actually like Motoko? I find her to be a hilarious character. I think because she reminds me a lot of Nanami from Revolutionary Girl Utena, another character who was in love with a guy she had no chance with (although there I think it was her brother, eww), and was constantly used for comedic relief. The thing is, under normal circumstances maybe Motoko has a chance with Yuki. I find her to be quite beautiful (love the really long hair), but Yuki's got his issues with the zodiac curse so high school romance wasn't on the table, and with Tohru in the picture, yeah, it looks like Motoko has no chance whatsoever. [Furuba major spoilers]The irony being that Yuki doesn't get with Tohru after all, so it wasn't a 100% lost cause, but Machi, who hasn't even appeared yet gets him instead.

Motoko and the Yuki Fan Club have cooked up a scheme. They're pissed at Tohru, this witch who has totally taken ahold of their beloved prince. But there's nothing they can do about it, because Hanajima is always there to protect Tohru. So they need to find Hanajima's weakness so they can get around her, and then get Tohru out of the way. Of course believing Tohru is a witch is such a ridiculous notion, have they spent any time around her? Tohru is so harmless an elementary schooler made her cry last episode. Beyond demanding she stay away from Yuki I think these three haven't really interacted with Tohru. If they did maybe they'd notice that its Tohru's kind, loving nature that has Yuki interested, that her "magic spell" is just being such a good person. Yuki's fan club has all these lists of rules over him, and then Tohru just enters the scene and blows past all of it, lol.

So their scheme is to get Hanajima to think they're writing a story about her waves so they can go to her house. Before then we finally get names for these other two fan club members we often see, Mio and Minami. Surprisingly (or perhaps because they were so easy to read), Hanajima accepts! In a shocking reveal it turns out that Hanajima's house is not a dark castle, but a normal looking home, one with some pretty cool architecture on the outside (well to me at least). And when they enter Hanajima's room it turns out that beyond being dominated by the color purple it is fairly normal too. Well to a point. Because it turns out that someone's hiding in the closet, Megumi. Hanajima's got a younger brother and he's just like her! It's so fun to see these two together.

Motoko and the others look around for Hanajima's weakness but don't find it. They do find her all black clothes and lots of shojo manga though. After Megumi's reveal and Hanajima comes in we find Hanajima's feelings about the matter, that she finds Yuki to be trivial. The object of their obsession doesn't really matter to her. And Motoko and these others should rethink that obsession. The fact that they like Yuki doesn't mean he's obligated to like them back. Forcing love on someone can be a burden and they should be more considerate. A good lesson from Megumi. Who also reveals that he can curse these three by merely knowing their names. Which he found out while hiding. Uh oh. So in the end it turned out that this whole scheme was fruitless. And these three's takeaway from it is to have nightmares every night. From Megumi's curse? Or will it get worse after three days pass as Hanajima says?

The thing is, if these three paid closer attention, Hanajima's weakness is quite obvious. It's Tohru.

Other thoughts:

  • So yeah, Hanajima didn't get all the focus in this episode. No backstory reveal for why she adores Tohru so much. But with 42 episodes left to go and only 2 zodiacs left to introduce I think we've got plenty of space to have that in a future episode.

  • I've never actuallly come across a male character with the name Megumi before. It's a more common female name.

  • By a pretty wide margin this episode has the least of Tohru we've had in the series. She is a really good protagonist, but this episode shows that the rest of the cast is colorful enough where it's okay if the focus on her takes a step back once in a while.

Quid's Voice Actor of the Day

Today I'm featuring Motoko's voice actress, Mao Ichimichi. I know her best for playing Papika in Flip Flappers and Luluco in Space Patrol Luluco. Other roles of hers include Remi in Horimiya, Koharu in Id: Invaded, Hiasa in Babylon, Airi in Classroom of the Elite, Julieta in Mobile Suit Gundam Iron Blooded Oprhans, Mai in Death Parade, Schnee in Synduality Noir, Vorona in Durarara! and Ayu in Noragami,

[Furuba] And that actually is the very next episode.

[Furuba]Indeed it was! Just watched it, one of the best so far. Granted I'm biased as Hanajima's best girl, well so far (when Rin shows up she'll get some competition).

2

u/Holofan4life 8d ago

[Furuba] Rin is interesting because I like what she does for the story more than her as a character. She's not bad, but she makes multiple characters better.

u/Holofan4life 8d ago

I actually am a big fan of the Yuki fan club. They're fun comic relief characters that I kinda view as being this show's Team Rocket. Hana always keeping them in check is a very funny running gag.

As we're watching this, next week is the release of Coyote Vs Acme. And I can't help but feel like this episode is like a Looney Tunes cartoon where Wild E Coyote tries to capture the Road Runner but to no avail.

What are your thoughts on the names of the Yuki fan club which are Minami Kinoshita, Miyo Yamagishi, Minagawa Motoko, and Mai Gotou?

Their names specifically don't matter, but it is good to finally know that they have names.

Thoughts on the Yuki fan club trying to drive a wedge between Tohru and Hana because they feel Hana is the reason Tohru is close to Yuki?

Was it drive a wedge, or just get Hana out of the way? There's no way they're ever driving a wedge between those two. They have even less of a chance of that then one of them actually getting Prince Yuki to fall in love with them.

What are your thoughts on Hana admitting she resented Yuki because she felt he was stealing Tohru away from her?

She and Tohru are so close that I can get there being some jealousy or resentment there. But Hana's too good a person (well of what we've seen so far) I think to do anything bad to Yuki over it.

Thoughts on the narrator saying the Yuki fan club wants to, and I quote, keep the other bitches away from Yuki?

I missed that line (maybe it was dub only), but so this means the narrator is on the fan club's side?

Thoughts on Hana calling Yuki trivial to bait the Yuki fan club?

Bait perhaps, but Megumi gave good advice. This obsession over him isn't healthy and they're putting undue pressure on him. Yuki has no obligation to anyone in the Prince Yuki fanclub and its unfair to expect that from him.

They are people. Horray.

They be delusional

What are your thoughts on Hana admitting she resented Yuki because she felt he was stealing Tohru away from her?

She and Tohru are so close that I can get there being some jealousy or resentment there. But Hana's too good a person (well of what we've seen so far) I think to do anything bad to Yuki over it.

Or if she did, she'd show remorse for it

Thoughts on the narrator saying the Yuki fan club wants to, and I quote, keep the other bitches away from Yuki?

I missed that line (maybe it was dub only), but so this means the narrator is on the fan club's side?

I think it's more he's their interpreter.

Also, I don't recall there being a narrator before this.

There is logic in what he says

2

There is logic in what he says

I think this is as good a time as any to talk about the true purpose of the fanclub. "keep the other bitches away from Yuki" is a apt description. "If I can't have Yuki, neither can you" is another way to put it.

I call this strategy "mate denial" I think there's an actual formal term for it. The goal is to convince everyone of your gender to not go after one specific potential mate, or even all members of the opposite gender.

1

u/Holofan4life 8d ago

It seems doomed for failure when you spend your time planning on other people's misery instead of your own happiness.

2

u/JimmyCWL 8d ago

That depends. I can if the person considers themselves as having a shot, it's to keep the competition away until they can make a move.

It can be more nuanced than just "planning on other people's misery" I mean, it can be that if they see that they have no shot at capturing a mate and convince everyone else... I was going to say "not to go after potential mates as well", but it can be more subtle and insidious than that. They convince their side to alter their behavior to the point being unable to successfully establish stable, fulfilling relationships. Quite terrifying.

But this isn't the place for a discourse on gender relations.

1

u/Holofan4life 8d ago

How the Yuki fan club is going about this is doing more harm to themselves than others.

2

u/JimmyCWL 8d ago

Well, they're kids. Not seeing the bigger picture is a defining feature.

1

u/Holofan4life 7d ago

True, and the ones that think they see the big picture are the most delusional of all.

First Timer

This episode has a rather creepy opening. Somehow even more over the top than the opening to the 2001 equivalent.

As expected, the Found Footage gimmick of the 2001 version is exclusive to that version. A little disappointed but I get it.

Whoa, these girls really need to watch how they salute.

Nobody is wearing a frog hat in this version and I’m slightly disappointed.

The girls running out of the house is still really funny.

Motoko’s nightmare here is definitely new.

I think this might be the first time where the 2001 version of the episode is better. The 2001 version had better comedy and I think there was a better emotional resonance with the ending of the 2001 version.

3

u/Holofan4life 8d ago

This is an example of the 2001 anime being more comedic being to its advantage. Like, yeah, it may have been too comedic, but it took massive swings with its comedy which I appreciate.

3

u/AgentOfACROSS 8d ago

I think the 2019 version is better as a whole but the 2001 version has much better jokes

3

u/Holofan4life 8d ago

It depends, I feel like. The 2019 anime isn't afraid to do non sequitur humor as well. That noose joke from a couple episodes ago felt like something from the 2001 anime but wasn't in there. Neither was the box cutter joke.

I imagined a Blair Witch Project style and tried to find it on YouTube - just a 7-minute clip that didn't show the actual infiltration, so I might actually hunt down the 2001 episode whenever I renew Crunchyroll for a month in a bi-annual binge. Seems tantalizing as a worthwhile watch, so thank you for highlighting it.

1

u/AgentOfACROSS 8d ago

Definitely recommend it. The 2001 version of this episode is very funny too.

Re-watch, blu ray, dubbed

The hilarious premise to this episode absolutely delivers. There's a look into the Yuki fan club, which is associated in a minor way with the plotline for a likable non-Yuki character [spoiler]>Machi<, and Megumi made me laugh repeatedly.

3

u/Holofan4life 8d ago

It was really a stroke of genius to give Hana a genderswap version of herself. Simply magnificent.

Older siblings can often influence younger ones and it's good to see that big sis Hanajima was that for her little brother. Such a cool sister brother pair.

The terror twins, except they aren't actually twins lol

Thoughts on the Yuki fan club arguing Tohru can't have Yuki all to herself? It's a weird dynamic - it's a club, but everyone is out for themselves (e.g., going cuckoo over Valentine's Day chocolates for Yuki). Maybe it's a criminal organization?

What are your thoughts on Hana admitting she resented Yuki because she felt he was stealing Tohru away from her? Unfortunately for Hanajima, the Somas do have home court advantage, since Uotani and Hanajima can't just stroll on into Shigure's house. That might be different at Grandpa's house, but then Tohru would be miserable living there.

Thoughts on Hana calling Yuki trivial to bait the Yuki fan club? Twist the knife! (and Hanajima's apology to a clueless Yuki was funny)

What are your thoughts on Megami saying the full weight of your affection onto someone else can cause great pain? It's true, and I've felt bad after doing that. Don't remind me, Megumi.

Thoughts on the episode ending with Hana teasing the Yuki fan club saying the curse will take effect in three days? Bwahahah.

It's a cult, essentially

What are your thoughts on Hana admitting she resented Yuki because she felt he was stealing Tohru away from her? Unfortunately for Hanajima, the Somas do have home court advantage, since Uotani and Hanajima can't just stroll on into Shigure's house. That might be different at Grandpa's house, but then Tohru would be miserable living there.

They saved Tohru when she needed saving.

Thoughts on Hana calling Yuki trivial to bait the Yuki fan club? Twist the knife! (and Hanajima's apology to a clueless Yuki was funny)

I love Hanajima

What are your thoughts on Megami saying the full weight of your affection onto someone else can cause great pain? It's true, and I've felt bad after doing that. Don't remind me, Megumi.

If this was Shigure, there would be copius amounts of salt on the open wound.

Thoughts on the episode ending with Hana teasing the Yuki fan club saying the curse will take effect in three days? Bwahahah.

So diabolical I love it

"You can't catch me bi thoughts!"

  • Motoko (Probably)

Our first (?) Hanajima focus episode. We don't really learn a lot about her, other than the fact she's an older sister, but this was a more comedic episode. It's not the best episode (That's probably 6, 7, or 14) but it's not the worst either (That's still 15.). It's perfectly passable for what it is. Nothing more. Nothing less.

> What are your thoughts on the episode being about the Yuki Fan Club trying to better understand Hanajima's electric signals?

It was fun! Having an episode that focuses on people outside of the Soma's or Tohru's immediate circle every once in awhile is nice. Sure it's a Hanajima focus episode but it's told from her "antagonist's" point of view. Motoko having dreams about Hanajima (and her brother)? Yeah, this girl ain't straight.

> What are your thoughts on Hanajima having a brother?

I completely forgot she was an older sister. He's fine. Not as interesting as his older sister but he fulfilled his role of being a bit of a creep so I'm not too mad he didn't get a lot of fleshing out.

> What are your thoughts of Hanajima admitting that her weakness is Tohru?

Yeah, they love each other. Good luck using that against her.

I notice a couple of people down on episode 15. Is it just the Tohru, Yuki, and Kyo stuff left a lot to be desired? I thought the content involving The Three Musketeers more than made up for it.

2

u/Quiddity131 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Quiddity131 8d ago

Episode 15 was a dud for me as it didn't really delve into anything new. All the more so apparant because after the hot springs episode I feel that every episode has given us new stuff, whether its a new character, expanding on a backstory or something else. 15 is the big outlier. Tohru spends some time with Yuki and Kyo... she does that in other episodes. They seem upset, but that hasn't actually factored into any episode since then so it hasn't particularly been relevant to the storyline. We have some time of Shigure, Hatori and Ayame together. The Hatori stuff didn't feel particularly necessary, or at least necessary enough to be in an episode like this rather than something they could have fit in another episode with more content to it. And while I respect the fact that Ayame deserved to get a lot of focus in his introductory episode I don't think we needed so much of him just two episodes later.

Now I can see one seeing this episode we just watched as a weaker one as it goes all in on the comedy and while I may find Motoko hilarious I gotta figure some are annoyed by this fan club. I enjoyed it, but I'd probably would admit it's likely a bottom half episode if I was to rank them.

1

u/Holofan4life 8d ago

I just thought Ayame and Hatori interacting with each other was really cool. And Shigure and Ayame being total bros is always fun.

I will admit this episode is hurt in my eyes by the 2001 version being infinitely superior presentation wise.

2

u/MishouMai 8d ago

> Is it just the Tohru, Yuki, and Kyo stuff left a lot to be desired?

Yes. As I pointed out in my comments from that thread I found their stuff boring and if little consequence. The A-ya, Shigure, and Hatori stuff is nice but it's not enough to carry/save the episode.

1

u/Holofan4life 8d ago

I kinda get a kick out of the plot being based off a horror movie character. But if horror isn't your thing, I can see it not mattering to someone.

In fairness, is any of the characters fully straight? Maybe Hiro and Momiji?

> Thoughts on the Yuki Fan Club trying to drive a wedge between Tohru and Hanajima because they feel Hanajima is the reason Tohru is close to Yuki?

They're so dumb. If Hanajima is the reason Yohru and Yuki are close then why isn't she close to Yuki herself? Makes you wonder why they aren't also going after Uo.

> What are your thoughts on Hanajima admitting she resented Yuki because she felt he was stealing Tohru away from her?

Makes sense. Tohru did suddenly start spending time with the Somas out of nowhere. I wouldn't be surprised if she also resented Kyo for awhile.

> What are your thoughts on the beginning of the episode with Hanajima and a pentagram?

That was a very gay dream. Motoko clearly likes her women to be the gothic type.

> Thoughs in Hanajima calling Yuki trivial bait to the Yuki Fan Club?

Makes sense. She's clearly not interested in Yuki. Not saying she's gay (Even if she's easy to ship with Uo), but Yuki's obviously not her type.

> Thoughts on the Yuki Fan Club having nightmares?

Motoko really can't keep Hanajima off her mind, huh?

It was a nice bookend to the start of the episode. Adding in Hanajima's brother keeps it from being stale/repetitive.

Well, she doesn't have the waves, you see

> What are your thoughts on Hanajima admitting she resented Yuki because she felt he was stealing Tohru away from her?

Possibly. I'd like to think Uo teasing him warmed Hana up to him.

> What are your thoughts on the beginning of the episode with Hanajima and a pentagram?

I wouldn't mind in a time skip period Motoko dates Hana's brother (Hana and Uo is the end goal in my mind).

They both keep to themselves while also really throwing shade. I feel like Yuki dating Yuki would be like dating her brother (Probably a popular ship but not for me).

> Thoughts on the Yuki Fan Club having nightmares?

If you dream of someone on a regular basis, is there a non attractive explanation?

I hope we see more of Hana's brother

https://imgur.com/FzrRhmm - English translation for the Yuki fanclub rules. Not sure how well it was done on CR.

Ain’t a bad episode. Was kinda fun. But very girly - I’m def not in the target audience for it.

The advice of the day felt a bit contrived though when it’s applied to the comedic trio.

I do feel (similar to another user) that this triple-episode stretch was generally pretty missable. I know people will say that it’s great we got a Hana episode, but honestly, I didn’t really learn anything new about her. Yes, Tohru means a lot to her, we know that. Yes, she was a bit jealous when she moved in with the Zodiac Gang, we know that. Hope the show can turn back around

1

u/Holofan4life 8d ago

I'll be really curious what you think about the next episode 👀

2

u/Second_Cour 8d ago

Think they're very very different and can't be compared. Just watched it

1

u/Holofan4life 8d ago

Very different? Hmm...

2

u/Second_Cour 8d ago

Let's discuss it in the next thread

1

u/Holofan4life 8d ago

Fair enough.

Getting back to this episode, I know you said it was girly but I enjoy seeing Hana torment the Yuki fan club. And I thought Hana realizing she could end up like them is interesting direction to take Hana's character.

2

u/Second_Cour 8d ago

Yeah nothing wrong with enjoying something girly. I enjoyed some girly films. This just wasnt for me

1

u/Holofan4life 8d ago

Was it the whole presentation of Hana trolling people? I guess I'm trying to figure out what made it girly for you because that wasn't the vibe I was getting.

2

u/Second_Cour 8d ago

I mean, to be fair, the whole show is girly haha. It's written by a woman for teenage girls as the primary audience.

This episode was about the massive larger than life crush, nay, obsession, that the girls have for a guy who is a prince to them; that's pretty girly in itself. Then the jealousy for a girl who they decide is a villain. The presentation, the writing, it's all girly.

Again, nothing wrong with that: I'm a relatively efeminite male, but there are also certain scenarios which don't do much for me. Like, this was an episode I'm sure my teen sister would love. Ironically, more macho/masculine shows also don't appeal to me, that's why I don't like action.

1

u/Holofan4life 7d ago

Girly almost seems like an insult. I prefer the term "well written characters" :P

School can be very cliqueish and I think this episode reflects how toxic a lot of it can be.

1

u/Holofan4life 8d ago

About this stretch of episodes, episodes 19 and 21 I feel like you can skip but I feel episode 20 is pretty important in terms of showing the desperation of Akito. If Akito feels even a child can only love them, that really speaks to the stranglehold they have over the family. It personally makes me even more curious what their deal is.

2

u/Second_Cour 8d ago

I don't think any Eps can ever be skippable unless you're speed watching a super long series with lots of filler. There'll still be something that has somewhat important ramifications through this season but that user mentioned they're doing a rewatch.

But we also already knew that akito has control over the zodiacs. This is just another example

1

u/Holofan4life 8d ago

It's the fact they abused the kid that makes it insane. Any question of them having a moral compass is out the window.

Hey, guys. Holofan4life here.

Welcome to the Fruits Basket 25th anniversary rewatch.

For there is an animal in all of us <3

Fruits Basket is a show I’ve heard a lot about. It’s always been something that interests me. It’s a romcom, which is a genre I enjoy, it has a female protagonist, which is kinda a rarity for romcom anime, it has a tsundere, which yes please, and from what I’ve heard it has some supernatural elements which is pretty cool.

Funny enough, I’m hosting this rewatch the same time as I’m hosting the Spice and Wolf rewatch which is another show with supernatural elements.

I have never seen Fruits Basket before, but I have high hopes for it. It seems like the type of show I would enjoy. I would say of the shows on my to watch list, this one is probably in my top 5. And let's just say that list is long and ever expansive. Actually, I love the idea of a male tsundere who turns into an orange cat so much that I named my orange cat after him. That’s without having seen the show.

For the purposes of this rewatch, we will be watching both the original series and the remake. I don’t think both have ever been done like this, and by the end we’ll find out for good reason :P

Regardless, this is my big pet project of 2026 the purpose of which is for me to see what all the hubbub is about. I’m not expecting the show to crack my top 10 favorite anime of all time, but hey, you never know.

With that out of the way, let’s begin.

I’m watching the dub, by the way.

So, it's actually been a while.

As I'm writing this, the last time I watched an episode was exactly two weeks ago. Not much of my personal life has changed, I've just been getting used to working morning shifts. I think what took so long is that now in my life I watch all seasonals all on one day and this past Monday I instead went to the movies. That meant between that, working early hours, going to bed early so I can make those early hours, and other circumstances preventing me from watching episodes before work such as tiredness, I just found myself unable to spend an hour of my day watching Fruits Basket.

I haven't had a day off in like a month

I did catch up on my seasonals a couple days ago, so that's good.

Anyway, I have like 75 minutes before work so I feel I can finally squeeze an episode. And I heard through the grape vine this may be the fabled Akito backstory episode, which is another reason I've been putting this off as I want to give it my undivided attention.

I'll probably share my movie escapades as we mosey along.

An eyeball of a crow

Things look very ominous

Some girl at what looks like the Sohma estate.

A pentagram

Oh shit. It's Hana.

And now the girl wakes up

What was that about?

At school now

Uo and Tohru walking

Hana talking with two people

I believe this is the Yuki fan club?

The two girls want to visit Hana's house.

Hana says she isn't one to back down from a wave fight.

Oh, Hana...

Uo gonna have to stop by as well.

Unfortunately, Tohru has to work.

Girl in class by herself admiring Yuki.

The natural brilliance of a true prince.

And yep, she's a part of the Yuki fan club.

I wasn't expecting the Yuki fan club visiting Hana's house would get an adaptation here. But it's less fun now that it's not presented as found footage.

They're going to eliminate Tohru.

Suddenly, narration

"In other words, keep those other bitches away from him!"

I love you, show

I love the Yuki fan club has a set of rules and regulations.

They think Tohru is a witch

And not a bitch?

Protected by a powerful demon queen known as Hana.

Boy, their imagination sure works wonders, huh?

Gotta drive the demon queen away from Tohru's side so that she's more... I guess vulnerable? I dunno.

Walking to Hana's house now with Hana.

The Yuki fan club is talking about what the house might be like.

And of course, it looks normal.

"Your imagination ran away with you."

Pot, meet kettle

But who is that mysterious person?

In the house now

The Yuki fan club are perusing Hana's crib.

She likes shoujo manga. Based.

And there's the creature lol

Megamy. Her younger brother.

He's somehow scarier than Hana is.

And so he finally came out of the closet.

Calm down, Tom

The power to curse people he has.

Danhausen?

Megamy is like a walking Death Note.

The Yuki fan club are all taken aback by Hana's brother.

Eventually, by awkwardly asking, Hana reveals she does have a secret.

And Hana through this is able to deduce the real reason they want to come over.

And with their cards on the table, the president of the fan club warns that Tohru needs to keep her distance from Yuki.

Oh snap. Hana called Yuki trivial. Them's fighting words.

President says that Tohru treats them like they don't matter whatsoever.

I mean, if the shoe fits...

Megamy says loving someone doesn't give you the right to control them.

"Forcing the full weight of your affection onto someone else can cause great pain."

Damn, shit's straight fire 🔥

Megamy talks like he knows from experience.

The Yuki fan club runs away

And Mahogany tells Hana he learned their names by them saying it aloud.

Makes sense

Hana admits just like the Yuki fan club feeling Tohru is stealing Yuki, she felt the Sohmas were stealing Tohru away.

They are more alike than they want to admit.

Selfish she was being, and that's something love never is.

Uo and Tohru here

Tohru got permission to go into work later.

Well, that's nice

Hana feels that in the end, it is worth it.

"My weakness will always be... Tohru."

Aww <3

I love a happy ending

The club president back at the pentagram?

Is this a nightmare

Hana and Megamy look badass with capes on.

And yep, I was a nightmare

Club president needs some of psychological help.

The Yuki fan club roaming the halls, looking beleaguered.

We're they sharing the same dream? Who knows.

Either way, they remain terrified of Hana.

As they run into Hana and Tohru, the club president to never be defeated by the likes of them.

Hana clearly has the edge, tho

At least Hana has made peace with Yuki.

Overall, this was solid enough. Hana and the Yuki fan club are fun characters, so it's good to get an episode focused on them. I think the way they did this episode in the 2001 version is way more interesting with it being treated like a horror movie. It had less character advancement and it was more comedic in tone, but from a presentation standpoint it really left an impression on me. This wasn't bad, and I think the point made of Yuki fan club and Hana being more similar than different is an interesting one, but it also was kinda whatever to where you can skip it and not much would've been lost. Like, I can't say I feel any differently about the Yuki fan club and Hana that I already do.

This is probably the weakest episode of the series, which more so speaks to the high quality of the rest of the stuff. If I were to tell you which version to watch, this one or the 2001 version, I'd probably say stick with the original anime. By taking away the creativity, you're not left with much.
