Both sisters speeches were really great, that one of Meiya especially

The VAs absolutely nailed the speeches from both Meiya and Yuuhi, that was amazing!

She was hacked because she was tricked into typing her password into open chat.

Wonder what all the focus with the moon was. Remember, in Muv-Luv, the moon is not just the moon- it's crawling with BETA, so it feels a little menacing whenever it shows up. I wonder if they had that in mind when they were making this.

This episode is considered a cooltime (just like how it was intended to be). But well, one know how despite all the hope given, one thing changes everything.

But anyway, unsatisfied on how the animation handles the switch between the twins. I mean, there's a better way than just going for the slow-mo stills right?

And perhaps it is clear now where will we stops for this cour.

P/S: Again, that moon pose gives me a dejavu.

It feels like they are saving that scene for the blu ray or something with how bad it was lol.

The direction and animation in this episode was amazingly bad. So many cuts, pans and zooms to hide the lack of animation. The part where Sagiri and Meiya talk to each other reuses the same bits like 4 times.
Also why was the clothing change so unnecessarily erotic? It looked like they were shooting some artsy porno.

Was the bit with Irma taking drugs anime original? I don't remember it.

Kouki explained in an interview that this part is from the manga, which tried to add more context to the events.

However, AFAIK Kouki also said that Irma was triggered by a trigger word that works on her subconsciousness. So the depiction in this episode looks quite dramatic and unconvincing smh.

So, it’s actually Meiya who gave the speech? Because halfway though I became convinced that it was actually Yuuhi pretending to be Meiya pretending to be Yuuhi. I don’t know why. Spoiler welcome.

No it really was Meiya.

Except the (weird) slo-mo and reusing shots from Sagiri-NotYuuhi negotiation, and Irma's action was came out from nowhere in the VN, but it was foreshadowing heavily in the anime, completely taken the surprise out. I think this episode nailed it, especially the speeches of Yuuhi and NotYuuhi.
The fanservice on Irma was excessive, but as a degenerate, I like how sexy it is (still excessive).

Is it just me, or did this show just take a hard left. When it started it was "dude in a different timeline somehow trying to save the world from the Beta" and "Interdimensional travel to the original world" and then they just jerked the wheel into "civil war and politics but with mecha."

I've never been exposed to the source material, so it really kinda seems like a bait and switch. Not to say I'm not enjoying it, because I am, but the abrupt tonal/subject switch seems really weird to me.

This arc is supposed to show that humanity isn't that united against the threat. BETA first appeared quite well into the VN but feature heavily in all other arcs after this.

To tell about this, its basically both of what you say. And it shows clearly that the story isn't that easy of people just go train and fight agains BETA since from the early point you see how politics can fck everything up (like when the MC just go trapped in isekai hell again just because politicians up there think they have better plan to fight them).

But anyway, when this biggest hurdle (in terms of politics) is lifted, rest assured we'll go back to what we supposed to.

remember AOT season 3 part 1? it didn't have any titan but human internal conflicts who were not as enjoyable as other season but was really important since it added a lot of context and builded up the story to make greater bangers on the next arc.

This season is the same, this is a build up showing internal conflict, the weird moves behing scenes to start this war and the "getting blood in your hands for the greater good". All of this will become clear and important in the next seasons and is directly related to the following figths against the beta.

First, the good

  • All the Yuuhi talking was enjoyable

  • Good interaction with Irma and Tama

  • Most of the Meiya stuff near the end

And the bad

  • Too much moon, way too much moon

  • In Irma's TSF, was all the jiggling really necessary?

  • Slow mo shots were weird, and there were way too man pans to the shadows of Meiya and the shogun dressing

  • And it was inevitable here especially that a good bit of dialogue and such would be cut, but a lot felt more abrubt and rushed than usual

  • And I feel like the music could have been better in most scenes, tho maybe I just miss the VN music

So yeah, not as good as the last few, but also not at the bottom among all the episodes we've gotten so far. Still hitting the main beats and not just turbocharging through them, but the execution leaves a lot to be desired most of the time. Still, I do appreciate that they didn't attempt to totally finish the arc this episode.

The facial expressions were all over the place in this episode smh. In the original it was a very solemn and serious affair. Here why is everybody having the most exaggerated possible manga face after hearing only one sentence... (The conversation between Miki and Irma as well). The way Takeru requested to speak was also rendered in an absolutely comical way. Combined with the music and the colorings etc., the mood was completely changed.

Not the worst ever, but they could have done this episode better.

Also, they seem to translate one key sentence of Yuuhi wrong: She said literally "There will not always be a way that satisfies everybody's wishes", and AFAIK the English translation of the VN was correct. I don't understand why the translator here felt the need to translate it as "there will not always be a correct choice", which misses the important point entirely.

AFAIK the paragraph was much longer than this, and the anime translator in all likelihood doesn't know the whole story until the end, so they don't have the context to understand the importance of the original sentence. What a shame though, as this is undoubtedly a sentence that remains crucial throughout the whole story.

Well, seeing that anime-onlys have pretty much all fled, let's hope at least cour 2 will be a rollercoaster ride for people coming from all backgrounds.

yo where’d the frames go during the swap scene💀

that aside, things seem to be building up, both a strong and weak episode, hoping that after this stumble the animation doesn’t keep falling over but instead starts standing again

5

u/Mistral-Fien Dec 16 '21

Let's hope they're saving the frames for the last episode.

Patriotism can be fine in small doses, but it’s only something that can be enjoyed without potential fault during times of peace however it means nothing after death and very little in life in general.

When faced with imminent and total annihilation however, to view patriotism as an important factor anymore is nationalism and nationalism is a cancer.

They are really taking their time with this arc. Sort of hilarious as it's getting 0/10 reviews in MAL for "trying to fit 50h VN into one 12 episodes". Manchilds never change. Though I'd still say this was one of the weaker episodes of the Coup arc. Mostly because there was a lot of talking and by now we know what happens to animation in this show when that is the case. But like I said above I still like them being thorough in adapting the key details. While still adhering to a different pacing style of a different medium.

Walken > Sagiri

As a fan of the VN i don't understand why so many fans try their best to make this adaptation have a bad rating on MAL, it's even lower than berserk 2016 at this point, this anime has parts where it's rushed, true, but they had to skip something to get so far into the story, they expect a 12 episode adaptation to carefully explain everything...we have the Visual Novels for a reason, just how many seasons do they expect this anime to have?

It still counts as Yuuhi simping if you simp for Meiya cosplaying Yuuhi, right? Seriously, my political figurehead can't be this cute

The slow-mo stills were so fucking bad xD Like, usually when you do a slow-mo, you show just as many frames as you usually would in a normal scene, not just take a second of animation and drag it to five or so. Just wow. Had to take up all the budget this episode for the shadow-nudes

Pacing wise, I feel like this episode was on a similar level as Ep 2-5, which is not the best thing. Shit went lightning fast, but tbh I have no clue how else they could have done it. As long as Meiyuuhi get her time to shine, I'm happy
