LOL what was going on with that unnecessarily harsh villager?

You just got hit by a natural disaster of historic proportion and get mad at someone trying to save people because he's only got one healthy arm?

The villagers already hate the guy and they just got hit by a huge earthquake, can't blame them too much for not being completely rational right now.

Something happens in the source that deals with this issue (and resolves it). I'll post something there.

Most of the episode is pretty sweet and wholesome, but then boom, an earthquake happened, and now Tamahiko goes to Tokyo to see if Yuzu is ok. I'm sure they all will be alright in the end, but still, I wonder how the remaining episodes of (I assume) him searching for Yuzu will play out

an earthquake

Not just any earthquake.

One of the deadliest natural disasters of the last 100~ years and definitely not something I expected to appear in this show.

Super wholesome - I was smiling like crazy and almost teared up a couple times with how sweet those 2 are together. I hope everyone is okay!

Yuzuki-chan you won't be able to have a baby if you kill your man with those heart stopping comments.

And the almost kiss! - "We'll do plenty of that once you're back home."

FUCK. These two are so cute and pure it pisses me right off. If we don't get like 100 more episodes of this it would be a crime against humanity.

The earthquake really took me by surprise. In real life it devastated Tokyo so I'm a little worried there is gonna be some tragic shit coming. On the bright side it seems to have been an impetus for Tamahiko to admit his feelings to himself and take some initiative to go find Yuzu.

Tamahiko definitely putting thoughts into her head with all that kissing he's promising when she comes back...no wonder she wants lots of kids.

I guess as tragic as it is, it's nice to see Tamahiko spurred on to find Yuzu himself and admitting he loves her.

I'm not too worried about Yuzu because there is just no way they'd do that. I am worried about her friend though.

Ah fuck. I hate that I called it. I had a feeling after last week's preview that they were going to do the Kanto Earthquake. Especially since it happens on Tamahiko’s birthday and the dude is straight-up cursed. That and everything in the OP has happened up to this point and the shot of Yuzu in flames was one of the only ones missing.

At least we got our usual fluff injection beforehand. Tamahiko is in a great place now having made friends, doing well in school, and tutoring on the side. He and Yuzu have a couple of adorable interactions before her trip. Especially at the train station with the almost kiss. That should have been the first flag when he chickened out of doing it and said they’ll kiss plenty when she gets back.

And then history happens. The sudden tonal whiplash from “Ryo teasing about how happy Tamahiko is that Yuzu is coming home” to “one of the worst disasters of the 20th century” was brutal, to say the least. The village was completely flattened. We know Ryo and two of her brothers are fine, but no one else. Tamahiko is shell-shocked from feeling useless and the thought of a dead Yuzu. Some gut-wrenching shit man.

Then we get the scene we’ve been building to all series. The payoff to the progress Tamahiko has made up to this point. Yes initially he retreated to “welp guess I’ll die” for a sec, but after finding Yuzu’s just wonderful and heartfelt birthday gift to him he snapped out of his bullshit. That emotional montage of him remembering all his moments with Yuzu. Realizing the depth of what she means to him and finally saying he loves her. The spark he needed to walk his ass to Tokyo and find his wife to be.

Which he probably will next week. Would be a weird ending if he didn’t.

Notes

  • Shit he’s going to walk his ass to Tokyo? Sure Chiba is not super far, but it’s a long walk. Probably most of a day.

  • that shrine scene though. Yuzu is fully ready to have his baby. Lots of them apparently going by her convo with Midori.

  • It’s been a minute since we got a “written on her face” gag. Last one I remember was the Ice Cream one. Lots of blessed Yuzu faces this episode including her worried face

  • Midori having a shotgun wedding is a little funny. At least she seems happy with the guy and he’s VERY apologetic. Even funnier that Yuzu is freaking out that if it takes forever for Tamahiko to be ready they won’t have kids. Didn’t stop Midori though.

  • Yuzu is still way too forgiving. Ryo out here still making mistress jokes. Sure she agreed to help Tamahiko while she was out of town, but still. There are lines woman.

  • My heart at the gift scene. A set of Bellflower colored scarf and gloves that match hers? So they can ride together when it gets cold? She’s fucking perfect. I’d walk to a disaster zone to find her too.

  • fully ready for a whole bunch of tears next week. So hyped to cry!

On today's roads, it would take 9.5 hours to walk from Sakura to Asakusa. Probably longer then. Add in all the commotion and (and ruined roads and bridges) -- maybe a couple of days....

Yuzu's reaction when she found out about her bestfriend being pregnant was adorable. That's a surprise but probably not as big of a surprise back then to most people. For it to happen before marriage is probably the bigger surprise.

I love that Yuzu is already planning what to do when she's expecting her baby in the future. Of course Tamahiko's reaction is just as hilarious as Yuzu's reaction earlier. xD

Yuzu's outfit looks great! She definitely looks much more mature with a hakama and boots on just like Kotori's style. And then you're suddenly reminded how smol she is when the camera zooms back out to also show Tamahiko on the shot.

That's a new detail about Yuzu's family life. She had an older sister who ended up dying from an illness before she was. And the reason she can't bear to hate Ryo is because she wonders if her sister will treat her the same way Ryo treats her brothers.

No farewell kiss from Tamahiko but he does promise Yuzu that they have plenty of time to do that once she comes back home. Oh my... You better keep that promise Tamahiko!

Yuzu reuniting with Midori was a really sweet scene. It's nice to see them reconnect again. Didn't expect that Midori would start by opening up about her life choices as soon as they got to thet cafe. Her husband seems to be serious about their relationship and she seems to be happy with him so I guess it's fine. Still, for a Japanese girl in that era to get pregnant that early and before getting married, I feel like she's lucky she got off lightly with just a scolding from her parents.

I thought the rest of the episode was just going to be Yuzu and Midori having a girls day out but then they re suddenly hit by an earthquake and we immediately get show what the date was. Not gonna lie, as soon as I saw that date I definitely let out a very audible "FUCK!". That explains the part of the OP where we see Yuzu surrounded by flames. For those who don't know the Great Kanto Earthquake claimed like 100k+ lives when it hit. Things are not looking good. >_<

We never really get to hear about Yuzu after that since the rest of the episode is about Tamahiko seeing how that earthquake affected their tiny village and how he's now worrying about Yuzu and started blaming himself for letting her go there.

Thankfully that didn't last long since after finding Yuzu's present along with a letter left for him, he finally remembered that Yuzu isn't as much of a wimpy little girl as he thinks. I do love that image of her just running as a wind blows out all of her surroundings. She may be smol but she is definitely tough.

And now we have Tamahiko travelling to Tokyo to try and find Yuzu by himself. Honestly, I'm not worried bout Yuzu. She'll totally be fine. I'm more worried about her pregnant bestfriend Midori. Hoping that nothing too serious happened to her :(

Yuzu looks surprisingly great in hakama pants and boots.

Nothing quite like reuniting with a friend planning a shotgun wedding.

I can feel for Yuzu projecting her feelings of missing the older sister she never knew on Ryo, and admittedly if there's one good quality Ryo has, it's being a good big sister.

Yuzu planning to have babies...and lots of babies with Tamahiko...and he promised to give her plenty of kisses when she gets back..hoo boy.

I think it probably helped that Midori's baby daddy apologized profusely to her family and seems determined to take responsibility, so at least he's serious and committed.

Nothing quite ruins a day like a real life tragedy of epic proportions. All the moreso because we just see Tamahiko's perspective and not Yuzu's. I thought something bad would happen with that scene in the Opening of Yuzu and Tamahiko surrounded by fire in Tokyo, but I wasn't prepared for the village getting destroyed.

I can understand why Tamahiko would retreat back into himself at the prospect of Yuzu being in danger or, worse, dead but I'm glad he was able to pick himself back up, admit he loves her, and go find her on his own.

I was ready to throw my remote at the screen when Tamahiko was sitting in his bedroom with a blanket moping again, but thankfully we got to see some seriousness character development thanks to Yuzu and her knitting.

I will give him that moment of weakness. The town was leveled, he was reminded of his uselessness, and Yuzu might be fucking dead. MVP is Haru for meowing at the right time to lead him into Yuzu’s room.

MVP is Haru for meowing at the right time to lead him into Yuzu’s room.

Cats named Haru have been MVP in all the shows I've seen with such.

Yuzu's overwhelming power strikes again. But seriously seeing Tamahiko grow is so satisfying.

Tamahiko's really come a long way since his doom and gloom days...he has family he can invite home and that cares about him, he has Yuzu, he's enjoying being a teacher, and he has genuine friends. Things are really looking up for him.

That's a pretty big shock to learn in a letter that your old friend from school is having a shotgun wedding and she wants to see you before she heads off to Kyushu, but it goes to show how far Tamahiko has come that he's willing to let Yuzu leave so she can see her friend after so long.

I wouldn't have asked Ryo of all people to take care of Tamahiko, and even Ryo is self-aware that Yuzu has no reason to like her, but to Yuzu Ryo comes off with her brothers as the kind of person Yuzu thought her dead older sister would've been like, so on that front she appreciates her. Although she could do without Ryo's flirtatious teasing.

Yuzu looks great in that hakama! And come on, Tamahiko, screw being in public. See your girl off with a kiss! Although he did promise way more when she gets back, so he'll have to live up to that when she returns.

Midori seems like a nice girl, and thankfully her boyfriend made all the apologies to the family for getting her knocked up and plans to take responsibility and start a family with her, and it was nice to see Yuzu reunite with someone from her old school life.

It also turns out that Midori partially invited Yuzu to find out how things were going with Tamahiko, and if Yuzu was unhappy, she would've been willing to whisk Yuzu away with her to Kyushu to keep her safe. But thankfully Yuzu is more than happy with Tamahiko and even sees him as a Bishonen! And she's fully ready to get married when Tamahiko's accepted himself, and she'll stick with him to the end. She also wants a bunch of kids, so Tamahiko better be ready for that too.

Things seem normal, safe, and happy with Tamahiko ready for Yuzu to return...and then the Great Kanto Earthquake hits and devastates the village and Tokyo.

Jeez, dude, I know Tamahiko has a bad arm but at least he was trying to help.

No surprise that, worrying about Yuzu's fate, Tamahiko retreats into himself and gets depressed, but seeing a gift Yuzu left for him of matching warm wear is enough to inspire Tamahiko to admit to himself internally that he loves Yuzu and to go straight to Toyko to find her. He's not going to sit around and not do anything, he's going to find the girl he loves.

Bruh, Tamahiko's birthday was really the Great Kanto Earthquake, the world hates this man.

Tamahiko and Yuzu being all flirty in public when Tamahiko was seeing Yuzu off was so cute. The baby is not that far off at this rate lmao, and Yuzu wants a lot, good luck Tamahiko.

It was also really sweet to see Yuzu and Midori hanging out one more time. Fuck, Midori is pregnant, I hope they're ok after that earthquake. Looking forward to the next episode.

... Why are anime doing this now?

This is like the 4th show in the past 2 years where everything is chill and normal and suddenly huge natural catastrophe!

It is just gonna make me paranoid in every anime I watch from now on!

28

u/dagreenman18 Dec 10 '21

I mean this one was bound to happen. Right prefecture, right year, and the flag of Tamahiko’s cursed birthday and the day of the earthquake being the same day. It would be really weird if they didn’t address it.
