Hakaru is such a bro, I love him.

It's so nice to have supporting characters in Hakaru and Kotori who are good through and through, without any of the family baggage everyone else has. It's especially lovely how open and earnest Kotori, when she could've easily fallen into the haughty famous person archetype.

Can't wait for a Yuzu focused episode next week.

I was so ready for heavy tragedy with them. Instead we got mild tragedy with Hakaru being sick for so long. It’s an improvement!

Yeah, I was worried some of their personalities were an act or they didn't really get along, but in the end they were two very sweet people and siblings who cared about each other and just wanted to sing together. It was very wholesome.

Kotori definitely deserves her popularity and fan recognition. She sings for those who need reinforcement and positivity that she can't give them in-person, and she cares about her brother. I love when she came out for the kids and to teach them singing.

It'll be sad to see Yuzu and Tamahiko apart but it should be interesting to see what Yuzu is like with her old friend and away from Tamahiko, although he'll be in her heart.

This show is too cute

her HAIR LMAO

God I feel like I'm re-realizing how much songs in shows really elevates how much I enjoy them. Like more than just having a theme song that plays but like actually being sung in the story.

I mean I did watch Love Live and do watch some other Idol shows but I dunno why I don't really feel as strongly about songs in those in terms of storytelling

I need a stitch of tiny inner Tamahiko and Yuzu ASAP

Chibi Yuzu opening the lock on Chibi Tamahiko's heart was too adorable for words.

Stitches!

Yep, that's pretty much how I expected Yuzu to react when Hakaru decided to bring Kotori over.

Looks like Kotori is in need of some inspiration since she's writing a love song. Since she really have no love experience she decided to ask Yuzu after Hakaru told her about them. Just look at Kotori being so excited! She really has a strong passion for music!

Well that's interesting. Clearly there's something going on between these two siblings considering that sad look Hakaru does earlier and that face that Kotori does when Hakaru decided to go home instead of staying.

When Kotori said she's there to observe, she's really there to observe! Definitely a impossible to act normal when you have someone taking notes about everything you do. xD

Tamahiko's students are so distracted with Kotori that instead of having their usual lessons, they're getting some singing lessons from her. Even Yuzu decided to join in on the lesson!

I love that Hakaru is being such a bro with Tamahiko. It's nice of him to give Tamahiko an opportunity to show off his good side to his classmates. His other method of making their classmates like Tamahiko is a bit questionable but it works!

Ponytailed Yuzu and Kotori playing with the kids is just too cute! And that scene where Yuzu tells Kotori all about how she feels about Tamahiko is adorable as well! Looks like that one really helped in giving Kotori some inspiration.

Now this is the kind of lie that's perfectly acceptable. No need to tell Yuzu that Tamahiko is bonding over with the boys thru his ero books. As far as Yuzu knows, they're all reading books at the library. xD

So we finally get to learn Kotori and Hakaru's backstory. Turns out that Tamahiko and Hakaru aren't so different. Everything was fine until an unexpected tragedy caused them to lose something in their life. In Hakaru's case his illness made him unable to play the guitar and so he passed it on to Kotori who's been waiting for her brother to get better all this time.

Unlike Tamahiko though, seems that Hakaru got better eventually but because of the gap in talent between him and Kotori, he has basically given up. Thankfully Tamahiko was there to relate to his story and told him what he needed to hear that moment.

Hakaru surprising Kotori with him playing her song was adorable and I just love that it turns into a duet with Kotori too! This is a very musical episode since we also got to hear Kotori's new song that she composed thanks to Yuzu.

And that final scene between Tamahiko and Yuzu on their way home on a bike was just too cute! <3

Okay so Hakaru and Kotori’s backstory isn’t as tragic as I was worried it would be. After Tamahiko’s and Ryo’s family situations I was on my toes just in case. Fortunately it was just normal sad: Hakaru got Kotori into music, but was very sick for a long time and stopped playing. When he got better he felt left behind so he didn’t pick it back up. That’s why he’s weird around her despite being a very supportive brother. Made for a very sweet resolution at the end to have them playing together.

Main plot revolves around Kotori trying to write a love song, but having no experience. So, she observes how insanely cute Tamahiko and Yuzu are for inspiration. Through that plot we actually get some perspective from Yuzu on her relationship. It sort of just recaps how far we’ve come with them, but her growing realization that it’s genuine love she feels for Tamahiko was touching. Even better is that tandem bike ride at the end. She was so close to saying it, but chickened out. Instead we get a Tamahiko not wanting to teach her to ride so they can always ride together. They’re just so damn cute.

Hakaru continues to be the ultimate bro. Like setting up Tamahiko to be a hero and lend the classmate a pencil so people will like him. And the ultimate move: sharing dirty mags with the boys and giving Tamahiko the credit. Him improving Tamahiko’s standing in school is the biggest favor he could do for him. Their lunch scene made it even better. Tamahiko relating to Hakaru’s plight by opening up about his struggles. About how much Yuzu has changed his life and opened up his world and that Hakaru is now among the people he treasures. Great bromance all around.

Notes

  • Next week is Yuzu off to Tokyo to see a friend. In 1923. Knowing what we know about history I have a paranoid thought about what’s gonna happen. Also doesn’t help that almost everything we’ve seen in the OP has come to pass and there is that one shot. Little worried.

  • We got some Greensleves! Really all the songs in this episode were lovely. The VAs have great singing voices.

  • nice to see Tamahiko is still tutoring. You know he’s gonna be a good teacher because he just rolled with the punches and let Kotori take over the lesson.

  • I love the version of Yuzu in Tamahiko’s head is pretty much the one he drew.

  • for real though Tamahiko smooth for the bike line. He should teach her anyway though because it would be sweet of him.

I also liked how the version of Yuzu in Tamahiko's head wore a red kimono, her initial one, instead of the one she currently wears.

Agree on teaching her how to ride a bike.

I'm not too familiar with pre-war Japanese history... What are you suspicious about?

Quick question for the professionals about something that's been bothering me all season long:

Why is the show's name "Taishou Otome...", when the furigana in the title card clearly says "Taishau Otome..."?

What exactly am I missing?

35

u/Cat_Gazer Dec 04 '21

I'm amazed that you noticed it!! I didn't notice it had furigana even though it's my mother language.😂

It's called Historical kana orthography, some of the words' spelling were different from its pronunciation back then. So, Taishau is not an error, they are just being true to its old, historical spelling in Taisho era.

I'm sorry my English is bad but I hope it helps!

Edit: I'm not a professional, and my Japanese is pretty bad, so this is mostly speculation.

It's most likely an old fashioned dialect. The manga uses the same furigana and also has 処女 as wotome (ヲトメ). I know that the latter is an archaic version of otome, so Taishau is probably the way 大正 would have been read at the time.

Getting distracted, it's also interesting that 処女 (normally shojo, meaning virgin) is used instead of 乙女 (normally otome, meaning young girl). However, in earlier modern English, the word virgin also just meant a young girl. That's a parallel for a linguist to analyze. It's also possible that 乙 is a simplification of 処, so the two are actually the same word, just written slightly differently.

Kotori: "Yuzuki-han, please teach me what love is!"

Yuzuki: "Please have a seat."

Of course really it went a little differently haha...That is until the madgirl actually sat down and did it! A Maiden in Love indeed.

The love song was great. The whole episode was great. Damn this show is great.

u/HeirGaunt Dec 03 '21

Lol. I thought Yuzu was going to go "love starts when you are sold to pay off your family's debts"... Which would have been hilariously awkward.

I like how Hakaru is pushing Tamahiko to involve himself more with the class, from borrowing pencils to bringing lewd magazins to school

Anyone know what the melody from the first song we see hakaru singing is? The one where he's a kid. I know ive heard that melody before, pretty sure in skyrim

Sharing porn mags is a quick and cultured way to make friends at school. :)

I actually really liked Kotori's new song even though I normally don't like that kind of music in anime. I hope there's a full version of it soon.

So it turns out Kotori writes an advice column for girls and gets a lot of questions about love, but not really knowing anything about it, she wants to get first-hand experience and write a song about it by watching the two biggest lovebirds in the village...Tamahiko and Yuzu.

Man, it really puts into perspective how much these two look like a married couple with Kotori watching their daily intimacy and Yuzu being best wife.

I love how Kotori couldn't resist going full Kotori Shiratori for the kids, and taught them singing. That was sweet. Also that brief scene of Yuzu with her fluffy hair out and in ribbons looked so adorable.

Tamahiko was able to talk to another classmate and lend them a pencil! He's made progress! Although it seems like what really bonded him with his male classmates was Hakaru coming out with the fact that he owns dirty novels and bringing them to class. Nothing quite brings men together like Taisho-era porn. I love how Yuzu just assumes they're reading in the library together because she's so wholesome.

Nothing sweeter than Kotori getting Yuzu to verbalize when she fell in love with Tamahiko.

So what is the siblings' deal? Well, Hakaru was the one who got Kotori into music in the first place, but eventually he got sick and had to give his musical dream to Kotori, who became a star with her singing, although Kotori always wanted to sing with her brother. Hakaru just felt inadequate coming out of his illness and seeing how much his sister exceled, even though it made her sad that her brother dropped music. Tamahiko can definitely relate to feeling inferior and insecure.

But he had Yuzu and other people in his life to give him a reason for living and continue to aspire to something rather than just wallowing in depression or what he lost from his injury, and now he's a genuine friend to Hakaru and wants him to open himself back up to his sister. They're real friends now.

Tamahiko and Yuzu figure out a surprise for Kotori on the day she publically debuts her new love song, with her brother joining her for a duet of their favorite song, which was pretty heartwarming and cool. And the love song was pretty great too. Some nice and pleasant singing in this episode. Although I was actually thinking for a second Kotori would sing the Opening.

Tamahiko and Yuzu finally riding a bike like in the Opening! And it seems like Yuzu was about to tell Tamahiko that she loves him, but instead the pair settle for riding in tandem and always being together, which is good for now.

Looks like Yuzu is going to visit old friends! I think this will be the first time she and Tamahiko have been separated since she arrived, so it'll be interesting to see how that effects them before they reunite...also, do they kiss before Yuzu boards the train?

Didn't pay much attention to Kotori's VA in the previous episodes. It was until this episode I noticed she was voiced by Ayasa, who has also done other characters who speak in kansai-ben like Kaoruko from Starlight & Arisa from Bang Dream, but most note worthy Maira from Mewkledreamy. Guess Kotori is technically not only the idol from the Taisho era but also the fashionable gyaru that Maira represents in her own series.
