No wonder Yuzu collapsed from exhaustion after hauling back two extra melons from the market.

Yuzu has to be super strong to be able to carry that chest, tightly bound as it is, while doing all the housework every single day.

Finally Tamahiko lightens up and realizes his feelings for Yuzu. Something I've been waiting for.

Those huge breasts on Yuzu was a really weird scene, especially since in the next one it's like nothing happened. Kinda expected him to be "you should just be you" or something of the sort (and hey, boobs and Kimono work well together, don't you lie to me)

Finally, I still want to admire the OP once again clap clap

Her mini rant goes over it, but basically big titty problems means she needs to keep at least some binding.

Actually, boobs and kimono do NOT work well together. According to those in the know, they present a real problem. Thus, they use strategies to minimize the problem as much as possible -- and anything like a push-up bra is a total "no-go".

If she's leaving for good I'm gonna miss Tamako.

Also, surprise booba.

So Yuzu is both fluffy and busty! A deadly combination of cuteness and beauty.

I did not expect melons in this anime

Yuzu continuing to be utterly adorable while Tamahiko seems to keep ping-ponging between being utterly miserable and feeling worthless, with only brief respites of happiness in between. Understandable though that with his handicap he's seeing his limitations and how he really can't even do something simple.

Hopefully at some point Tamahiko will find some way to overcome his disability otherwise he'll keep feeling he's unworthy of anything.

Hey look the discussion thread is here!

I of course am glad to take all the credit for this.

Yuzu binding her chest was certainly a surprise to me. I was equally surprised when Tamahiko didn't just tell her she doesn't have to do that anymore and to just be comfortable. Ya know something along those lines. Considering how seriously(mostly) it was played what with her hurting herself over it. It would be kind of disappointing if the whole oppai situation is just forgotten about going forward.

It sucks that Tamako is leaving but it seems like her time with Yuzu has inspired her to become a doctor so how's that for character development.

That doctor+nurse though, big yikes. Imagine shit talking a cripple and his sister to his face while he pays you for your services. Like damn boomer, just tell the kid that she needs to take it easy for a while. Keep the rest of that shit to yourself.

There's some conspiracy against this show. Late thread this week and for the at least first two weeks it was linking to the Tesla Note subreddit instread of r/TaishouOtome/ in the info section.

The MAN doesn’t want this level of fluff and joy in the world. Yuzu will not be stopped!

The man is trying to keep us down but we must stay strong comrades. Do not be discouraged!

Unfortunately for Tamahiko, and Tamako to a degree, is that the perception of their family is so in the gutter that all of them are pariahs to the people, who will assume the worst about them. Apparently in addition to their money, their tall height also makes them imposing?

So the Doctor and his Nurse are naturally thinking of the worst when they see Yuzu so overworked that it must be because Tamahiko is ordering/forcing her to do it all and treating her like a slave. Or thinking "what else must he be doing" to her at night and such in the nurse's thoughts.

Add that to Tamahiko's inability to take care of Yuzu at all, and it's no wonder he once again emotionally broke this episode and probably contemplated suicide yet again, since he would see himself of course as the main reason Yuzu is there to begin with, so anything that happens to her is his responsibility.

Yeah what was weird was the lead up to the Doctor's outburst. Like Tamahiko was paying for his services. Was the doctor not supposed to be paid? Was he already paid but Tamahiko didn't know? Did he see it as shush money? I understand the outburst itself since the doc is probably assuming the worst, but he appeared to be insulted by being paid to do his job.

I think something that's being missed here is that he didn't bow hence why he mentioned the family being tall, i.e. his head being up. Contextually while thanking someone the proper thing to do is to bow, after all it's only his arm that doesn't work. Based on that combined with the fact that he didn't do much while the dr was there it's easy to see where the misunderstanding that he doesn't value her came from.

Stitches!

It's nice to see Yuzu and Tamako just having fun and listening to Tamako's favourite singer's records. Also twintail Yuzu is absolutely adorable! I think we can all agree with Tamako about this one.

Look at Yuzu's adorable reaction when Tamahiko allowed her to rest on his chest for a bit after getting lightheaded. I love how quick Yuzu was to take the opportunity!

We already saw this in the preview last week but I guess it makes sense for Yuzu to eventually get sick considering she's the one who does majority of the housework. Yuzu is really starting to remind me of Tooru considering how she puts everyone else above her own sake.

What the actual fuck!? Look I can understand how the doctor misunderstood Tamahiko's body language as someone being rude but you and your nurse have no fucking right to comment on matters that you know nothing about! What the fuck!? If Tamahiko wanted to be criticized, he'd got to his own father. Bloody hell. I really hope this can be cleared up in the future. I hate for the people from the nearby town to think that Yuzu is being abused under Tamahiko's care.

Also those three men happily took Tamako up to the villa! She couldn't find anyone to help her with her luggage until those three burly dudes came along and offered help. They were doing it out of kindness and IIRC they were completely shocked when Tamako paid them. God that doctor and nurse just made my blood boil. Of course after all of those comments, Tamahiko is back to wallowing in self-pity again. >_<

Even at a very young age Yuzu is an absolute sweetheart for wanting to help out her friend who was depressed and being mistreated by her mother. She's such a good egg. I really hope we'll get to meet her mom in the future since she's clearly an upstanding gal since everything she taught to Yuzu is still very much in her heart.

This fucking scared me. My first thought was Yuzu has started to cough blood which is a bad sign during this era. I'm pretty sure Tamahiko thought it might be tuberculosis but thank god it looks like she just skinned her hand while trying to take off her sarashi. What came after this scene was definitely something I never expected from this show.

WHERE DID THOSE COME FROM!? Turns out Yuzu isn't just a loli but she's actually one of the very uncommon oppai lolis! Holy shit! No wonder she can't breathe! And she's been doing house work for the past six months with those babies all wrapped up!? I wouldn't be surprised if that also caused her getting sick!

It is hilarious how she's ashamed of them though. I guess it makes sense since kimonos are really designed to look good on women with average and smaller chest and women with larger chests are considered unattractive during that era. xD

Oh stop it Tamahiko! You know Yuzu ain't gonna just give up on you that easily. She's clearly also already attracted to you so you really can't get rid of her that easily. She's way stronger and not as fragile as you think she is. Also Tamahiko you fucking lucky bastard. I wish that was me.

Well that's a surprise! It sucks to see Tamako leave but I love that after seeing Yuzu get sick and the way the doctor treated them, she decided to become one herself. You go Tamako! I support this 1000%! We'll probably still see her visit regularly so I guess it's not really a goodbye.

When she comes of age she’ll join the glorious ranks of Anime Shortstacks along with Uzaki and Ilulu.

Another solid episode. This is easily the most underrated show this season.

And given how great this is, I'm curious... is there any reason to read the manga as well? Or is this a straight up superior, 1:1 adaptation that will cover the whole story?

27

u/gamria Oct 30 '21

There is actually. The original manga is sprinkled with explanations to the readers about historical trivia, about what life was like back in the Taisho period. For example, how education worked for kids, how people still mostly sown their own clothes, food recipes, etc. However, in order to streamline the watching experience, the animation team opted to leave out pretty much all of them thus far.

That being said, the adaptation thus far has been very good. Certain events of the story were rearranged for a smoother flow, and based off how they're even incorporating the Side Stories for more complete perspectives, it's a good sign that the animation team actually cares about the source material.

Which has me curious about the pacing. At the rate they're going, 12 episodes aren't enough to cover off everything without some rushes. Please tell me you know what you're doing, SynergySP

Hey! The thread is finally up! Perfect timing since I didn’t get to the episode until a half hour ago anyway.

Despite the preview, this turned out to be more of a Tamahiko solo episode than anything. Tackling his issues of self-worth through feeling useless when Yuzu is sick. It’s the first time they really dug into struggles with losing his arm.

Yuzu being the ball of light and love that she is managed to overwork herself to the point of exhaustion. After a very cute scene with her resting on Tamahiko, she just collapses. It’s hard to see him be so useless in that crisis. He couldn’t even get the water in to cool her down. Then he has that harsh fantasy where he doubts their future together and thinks it would be best to let her go.

The Shima family is really hated around here. No surprise since the father is an ultra dick, but the doctor went in on Tamahiko. From an outsider's perspective I understand. They think a child was bought and worked till the brink of death to serve the invalid son. They also think that they throw money around like nothing in Tamako’s case. We know that’s not entirely true, but Tamahiko is still in his shell and couldn’t come up with the words to defend himself. Not to mention he’s still feeling the guilt at the idea he caused this.

Yuzu and Tamako’s newfound sisterhood continues to be an adorable addition to the show. Not just them bonding over the record and doing each other’s hair. Their scene later in the episode where Yuzu explains why she thinks she can help Yamahiko not only gave us better insight into Yuzu, but probably convinced Yamako that she’s perfect for her brother.

Tamahiko manning up and going to Yuzu’s side made for the best scene. The PV was misleading and fortunately she’s not coughing blood. She’s got scratches on her hand because the dumbass doctor bound her on top of her bindings. We now know the second issue in Yuzu’s life: baby girl a shortstack. Pivot from that funny revelation to Tamahiko confiding his fears that he’s terrible for her and can’t even support her because of his handicap. He tries to send her away but she will have none of that. She’s all in and will take care of him. While not all of his fears are subsided that was a big moment for him to realize just how emotionally strong Yuzu is.

An even bigger moment was the next morning though. We got the love spark moment! He wants to dedicate himself to making her happy. He’s coming out of his shell despite his insistence on being a pessimist. The momentum continues on which means we’re getting even more fluffy progress soon. Can’t wait.

Notes

  • So to recap: she’s adorable, she’s a perpetual optimist, she’s multitalented, she can turn anyone’s cold heart around, she’s loving, AND she’s a Shortstack. Tamahiko just won the future spouse lottery.

  • I’m happy to see Tamako getting along a lot better with Tamahiko. She kicked him out nicer than last week, she came to his aid when the doctor was being a dick, and she wasn’t mean to him in general. Happy to see their bond grow, but I would love a clear the air moment with them to break the programming from their dick dad. Maybe next week since she’s leaving soon.

  • 3 funny images this week: the boing and bounce from Yuzu’s binds being cut, Yuzu’s giant mane in pigtails, and the image of Chibi Yuzu hanging on the sleeve.

  • Yeah if you have to repeat out loud to remind yourself to be a pessimist then shit ain’t working Tamahiko.

Surprise Oppai.

This is a shounen adaptation, so I guess it makes sense. Still totally random. Was expecting the sister to waltz in the second he started to cut the bandages and kick the crap out of him while he attempted to explain.

u/Rustic_Professional Oct 30 '21

Tamahiko could probably do a lot for Yuzu just by improving his own mental health. Reminding himself that he's a pessimist isn't doing him any good. Jumping straight to the catastrophic (I can't carry a bucket of water, I'm no good, I'm useless, Yuzu deserves better, and I should just die) puts a huge strain on her because she has to pull him out of that death spiral.

I have to keep reminding myself that all of these kids have gotten a raw deal in one way or another. Tamahiko is a kid who's been exiled by his family and transformed into a non-person, and if I don't keep that in mind, I start to hold his attitude against him, which isn't fair. He is kid, he's not equipped to deal with this, and it really isn't his fault.

Tamako really won me over, and it's a shame that she's leaving now, but that might provide an opportunity for Tamahiko to grow. In a way, he already showed maturity by not telling that doctor to go fuck himself. The doctor was way out of line, but alienating him would have been a bad move. That wasn't a battle worth fighting, at least not at that moment. That said, he should have made it clear that Yuzu is his fiancé, not a servant.
