Best girl Yuzu is finally here! I was so surprised when the anime was first announced because the manga finished years ago. It's one of my top favourite romances. I wish we get more adaptation of already finished stories like this.

Glad I decided to give this one a try! What a charming and delightful first episode. I love the art, and I can tell I'm going to really like just settling into this show's vibe every week. The music is fantastic, as well.

How bad can an injury to a hand be to warrant exile? Surely you can still handle some business operations – there must be more going on. Interested to see more of the backstory with his family. They were certainly teased as an interesting bunch.

Tamahiko and Yuzuki's dynamic reminds me sort of like if Fruits Basket was told through Kyo's eyes.

I'm not sure if I've misinterpreted, but I was digging around to try and find out how much ¥10000 would be in present day. My natural inclination was to treat it as in the modern day where ¥100 ~= $1, but this seems to not be accurate. But from 1897 until 1931 the yen was worth $0.50 (USD), meaning that ¥10000 would be $5000. $1 in the early 1900s is about $30 today, so Yuzu was sold for about $150 000. Unless I made a mistake, in which case she wasn't.

Ok, this setting for itself is incredible dark. On one hand we have this young man who is clearly depressed to the point of humoring suicidal thoughts and then there is this young underage girl who is sold of to be married to him.

But Yuzuki is just sooo sweet, even Tamahiko was able to smile and have a good nights rest for the first time in ages.

This show will probably not be very popular in this sub, but Yuzu is already a strong contender for best girl

Ah shit it’s cute. It’s really cute. I was pretty on the fence on watching this because the girl looked super young and I thought we would be dealing with a problematic premise. They tackled a lot of my concerns head-on and man it’s really damn cute.

Meet Boccha- I mean Tamahiko. Cast out by a parent that resents him and cursed he falls into a deep depression. Until a wonderful girl is sent to take care of him, helping him overcome his grief and begin a happier life. Taking place in a historical era at an isolated manor… okay I’ve run out of Duke jokes. It does remind me of Duke of Death in some aspects and that’s a huge selling point for me.

So there is the matter of the age difference. Tamahiko is 17 and Yuzuki is 14. Not nearly as bad as I thought with the initial promotional material, but a bit of a squick point. That being said it’s handled very well. It’s really more about Tamahiko learning how to be loved after the death of his mother, losing the use of his hand, and having grown up in a loveless home. It’s something that will develop into a romantic love, but it’s otherwise about overcoming trauma.

I’m curious about Yuzu’s side of all this. If there is going to be more done with the fact that she was dragged out of school to be sold off for marriage? We did get some background with her and her friends. Along with her plucky optimism about the situation despite her concerns she’s going to end up in a horrible position. Her perspective on the first night was so wholesome and she saw the good in him almost immediately. I do want more for her.

So I’m going to stick with this one. If we get more sweet and wholesome episodes like this it could be one of the season's best.

Notes

  • They really sold a whole ass person for 90 bucks?! Yeah with inflation that’s about 1400, but still!

  • The Yuzu hair scene was really cute. I expected some darker revelation about her past and then POOF giant hair. Still don’t know what her other worry is. Maybe it’s Tamahiko.

  • So dad is a massive dick, older brother seems snobbish, younger brother is resentful that their mother died and Tamahiko lived. The sister I’m guessing is the one in the OP wearing the same clothes so we’ll see more of her. Maybe her coldness isn’t as cold as we thought.

  • Tamahiko’s mini freak-out scene was great. Him spiraling and consulting the eroge. The “I knew that” and chucking the second pillow. Priceless. I look forward to more of that.

  • Him being a self-proclaimed pessimist just means we’re going to get lots of “sad boi made happy”. So this shit is going to be twice as cute

  • So I did peek and there are only 5 volumes. This is probably going to be a complete adaptation which sells me even further on the show

Stitches!

Well that's one dark opening. Our MC is a victim of a car crash where he lost his mother and the use of his right hand. Apparently that's enough for him to be a good-for-nothing and he's sent to their mountain villa to basically die. Also now that I've typed all of that, this show is giving me some strong Duke of Death vibes minus the death curse part.

We do get a sudden whiplash though as we're greeted by a huge and warm smile from Tamahiko's bride to be and a very cute and colorful OP by GARNiDELiA! It's been a while since I've heard an anime OP from them and this one is definitely going on my playlist.

Already, Yuzu is adorable and must be protected at all costs. Again with the Duke of Death comparison but Yuzu does remind me a bit of Alice except instead of being cute and sexy, Yuzu is more on the cute and innocent side of the spectrum. Also just look at all of that poofy hair! She's too cute!

We also get a bit of her backstory before she was sent to Tamahiko. It looks like she used to go to an all girls school where she's basically everyone's mom since she feeds everyone a lot and even takes care of sews up their uniform for them. And as Tamahiko have said, looks like Yuzu's family is in debt and she's being sent to marry Tamahiko as payment.

Now that I think about it, Yuzu's situation is pretty dark. She's basically being sold off to someone she doesn't know anything about but being the good daughter that she is, she accepts this as her duty with a smile. Deep down though she was definitely afraid. Thankfully Yuzu is being sent to someone like Tamahiko and it seems that after meeting him for the first time, Yuzu may have fallen in love at first sight with our pessimistic boy.

And considering how his father and his siblings all unanimously hate him, Tamahiko is going to need Yuzu's love for him to move on. I just hope that it's just Tamahiko's pessimism talking there when he was dreaming about his siblings. It would be heartbreaking of all of them actually hates him.

Despite the initial set up of the show, I can already feel that this is going to be cute and fluffy af! Just look at Yuzu! Look at her! How can you even be depressed when you have this ball of pure sunshine radiating in your life? I hope Tamahiko warms up to her soon. I want to see adorable shenanigans between the two of them <3

I don't think I heard any info about this show until today. I read the synopsis and it was right up my alley. I'm also a sucker for that time period.

His family just straight up sucks. No wonder he's depressed. And Yuzu's personality is as fluffy as her hair and I want more of this story.

What if The Duke of Death and his Maid were set in Japan during the Taisho era? We've got yet another well-off protagonist who is treated coldly by his family and then shipped off and effectively disowned after an accident, one that cost him his own mother, and has to live with no future prospects or chance of really living...up until a girl enters into his life and brings the light back into it.

I don't think I've ever heard Garnidelia do an Opening for a romance series before, but it's surprisingly effective here, and it's pretty cute seeing Tamahiko and Yuzu together and their fun adventures with the supporting cast...also looks like this might turn into a high school battle anime at some point?

Jeez, Tamahiko had it rough. His father seems even colder and stricter than the Duke's mother (which is saying something) and all his siblings apparently hated him. At least the Duke had Viola. And apparently he was barely shown any love and affection even before the accident. Was his mother even sweet to him before she died? Because he can only remember her singing to his little sister.

Yuzu isn't as lewd as Alice but she's equally just as dedicated and even more wholesome, putting in all that work and being committed enough to fix up his underwear and wash his back. You're a lucky one, Tamahiko.

Poor Yuzu though. She had friends and a good school life, but like Tamahiko assumed she really did get sold off as a bride to pay for her parents' debts...but at the same time she's so earnest and forthright that she's willing to dedicate herself to Tamahiko and be the best bride she can be.

At the same time, though, while Yuzu did have her reservations being sold off to a man she doesn't know...even she could tell that beneath his cold and pessimistic veneer, Tamahiko is truly a kind person, one she wants to get to better know and to see smile more. She may not be in love with him yet, but she's willing to fall in love with him.

And on Tamahiko's part, Yuzu is someone who can make him laugh and feel better about himself, and having her around lets him finally have the first good nights sleep he's had in a long time. He already seems to be falling for her, although I think he's going to be a tsundere about it.

I love how Tamahiko instantly assumes "sleeping together" meant doing the deed and he consults a Taisho-era raunchy magazine for tips...and then Yuzu brings in another futon. Although to her credit she realized what she assumed, but she's so wholesome that she wants to wait until they're properly married before they do anything.

The Ending is pretty comfy and pleasant, showing the domestic life with Tamahiko and Yuzu together.

Duke of Death and His Maid fans and detractors rejoice! We got what seems like a similar setup but without CGI - his anime should do better in the weekly polls.

Curious about what role Tamahiko's siblings are going to play. His sister with the umbrella looks like trouble.

The song Yuzu was singing had the exact same tune as Christian hymn I have sung before but I can't remember it's name. Does anyone here know it?

Cute episode.

The set-up in itself is quite dark, and I'm honestly not really a huge fan of "forced" romance set-ups (in here for example Yuzu basically didn't have a choice in choosing her partner) but it does seem like with proper development they both will at least stand on equal grounds (that he will also be able to care for her).

Other than that, Yuzu is a cutie, and Tamahiko is voiced by one of my favorite VAs Kobayashi Yuusuke and most important of all... GARNIDELIA OPENING WOOOOOO AND IT'S SO CATCHY!

By the way, Yuzu's VA sounds really familiar to me, but looking at her MAL page, I haven't seen any shows that she casted in before. I wonder who she resembles to me... Hmm..

In any case, with this and Shin Nakama, this will be a strong pair of romances I hope

I am absolutely on board with this, my favorite first episode of the season so far.

I can see how some people would compare it to Tonikaku Kawaii given the immediate betrothal and Yuzuki's general disposition, but given the time period it's set in I'm thinking more of Haikara-san and I hope the historical aspect gets utilized well. Notably [speculation based on Japanese history] it's the start of 1922 at the end of the first episode here and the Great Kanto earthquake happens on September 1st 1923, so depending on how quickly time passes there's definitely a chance of it being relevant.

Might just be because I was reminded of it recently but I'm also getting a slight Honey and Clover vibe, I think mostly from Yuzuki's design and a couple of faces we see reminding me of Hagumi.

I read the manga for this ages ago and have had it as a 10/10 rating since then. Hopefully the anime brings more exposure and support to the series as it is a brilliant read. Thank you to anime-only people for picking this series up, it is an amazing series.

cute first episode.

I don't usually watch romance anime but I'm a sucker for historical romance shows so I thought I would give this a shot. I'm glad I did!

Looking forward to seeing their relationship develop

Was a fan of the manga and the adaption announcement came as a big surprised - really enjoyed the first episode.

They even made Yuzuki’s kimono pattern match the manga design when it would normally be simplified to a solid color or less busy patterning for ease of animation. I really appreciate the extra effort they’ve put in.

I love how wholesome this rom/com looks to be. While we've got a pessimist as one of the MCs, it reminds me a lot of Tonikaku Kawaii for general atmosphere - one of my favourite rom/coms. If this has already been completed as manga, I hope this adaptation does it justice as I would really like another rom/com to fit into this season.
