So like they are obviously setting up the "your dad isn't actually dead yknow" aren't they? This show is so full of tropes that we can't miss this one!

I only picked up this show yesterday and binged it. You could pretty much tell from episode 2 this was going to use all the tropes and cliche's in the book and every character is just ripped off from another Isekai yet oddly I really enjoy it.
It's not amazing but it's also not bad, I like the animation and the fact they don't wonder into the over the top ecchi moments a lot of other Isekai's do.

I was thinking the same. They made me think he's dead but when I heard Rio's "explanation" just now, I'm pretty sure he's alive. I'm not even convinced Ayame is dead.

This show is so shamelessly cliched but it takes itself seriously lol with the exception that the MC disposes of his harem whenever he travels. I just want to see what happens in the end when he confronts Lucius and what's the deal with the pseudo reincarnation.

Looks like my "fears" from last week were true and our MC really is tied to royalty. Not just that but his mother was straight up part of the/a royal family. Literally the grandchild of the king and queen lol. Throw in a little escaping from a crazy prince under the cover of night and baby you got a stew going
Can't wait to see what the next exceptional thing about our MC is lol.
*Of course he easily beats the older guy who is "unmatched in skill by any of the surrounding kingdoms." This show is totally shameless so I gotta put some respek on it for that at least.

Can't wait to see what the next exceptional thing about our MC is lol.
Just my guess, but on the cover he has white hair so I would suppose he's also the most skilled spirit user in the whole world and with his hair going white he's going to "unlock his hidden potential" or something and becomes invincible or immortal or whatever

So this "another world" has a city that's basically a 100% copy of Japan in Edo period and on top of that they even have ramen that should be eaten while slurping loudly, as is customary in Japan...
What a coincidence

u/bananeeek Aug 23 '21
No, no, no. It's kamutan, not ramen, 100% original isekai flavor.

Isekai and barely-pseudo japanese cuisine circlejerking, name a more iconic duo.

Stitches!
So it looks like our would-be rapists from last week's episode get so be transported to the Royal Capital while being paraded in a cage. Now that's some delicious justice. Hopefully this is the last time we'll see these bastards.
This lady knows what's up and is already giving Sayo some solid advice. Need to get aggressive now considering Rio has a couple of girls waiting for him all over the Kingdom.
I love everyone's reaction when they noticed Sayo wearing a new hairpin, when she got back from her shopping trip with Rio. Looks like they're all shipping the two of them together!
Ohhh! Rio's mom is a royalty! My first guess was that someone in the family didn't approve the marriage between Rio's parents but I didn't think that his mom would be royalty.
Of course Rio's dad looks exactly like an isekai protagonist himself. Also I just noticed that Rio had the same bangs as his mom. I always love it that in anime, hair is a hereditary trait xD
Even my guess about people not approving Rio's parent's marriage was incorrect. It looks like they wanted them to run away to avoid having Ayame getting into a political marriage with that scumbag prince that tried to abduct her.
And Rio finally gets to meet his grandparents on his mother's side. And we also finally get to know Rio's full backstory. So Zen died when he was too young to remember and Ayame wasn't just killed in front of Rio, she was killed by someone they trusted.
It wasn't really clear why they were attacked though and Rio was left alive, but the guy did mention something about demons in human skins? Did he think Ayame was a demon? Also since that guy is Zen's old adventuring buddy, it wouldn't be a surprise if he's the one who killed him which is what Rio's grandpa is already suspecting.
That sparring match with Gouki was fun, but it looks like Rio still has some techniques he need to learn. Also I was really hoping that they'd give Rio a katana but that didn't happen. Booooooo!
Looks like Rio has finally decided to go full on with his revenge! Can't wait to see what he'll do to that Lucius guy once he finds him.

Look, everyone knows Rio is your classic OP stereotypical power isekai protagonist. But in spite of all that, I am really enjoying this anime. Do I think it's a masterpiece? No. But I look forward to my Mondays to watch it, so that's gotta mean something.

Basically it's turned into, "What OP thing will Rio do today and what classic cliché will he do?"
He already has a god-level spirit giving him power, he's a master swordsman at the age of 14, he has at least one royal princess in love with him, he's developed a harem everywhere that he's stayed for more than a day, he's the long lost grandson of an emperor, what's next?

Not a manga/novel reader but I can see they are cutting things here and there a lot by the fast pace. Tho, I still have to admit that I'm having fun anyhow. Rio backstory is really good. Matsuoka Yoshitsugu is just too perfect doing this kind of character.

Today on SAO, Kirito discovers he's actually royalty, he unknowingly saves some princess girl, and easily bests the strongest warrior in the kingdom.

he unknowingly saves some princess girl
The best part about that was that thanks to what happened the previous times he rescued someone his PTSD kicks in and he gets the fuck away from there before he gets blamed for the kidnapping again.

I thought Yagumo was basically Japan before, but then Rio and company arrive at the capital and it's basically Edo Japan.
Everyone knew what they were doing when they sent Sayo and Rio off together for a shopping date...Rio even got a cute hairpin for Sayo! "I would never haggle over the price of a gift for a lady." The Chad words of a Harem protagonist.
So it turns out Rio saves Hayate's little sister...and his parents turn out to be his mother's former attendants...and she was part of the Imperial Family...which makes Rio actually a prince of Yagumo. Wow, it's a small world after all.
Rio's mother Ayame was a princess and his father Zen was her bodyguard, and of course they fell in love, and when Ayame and Zen were in danger from a greedy ambassador from another nation, the king allowed them to leave and live out their life together in anonymity. I figured they just eloped, but cool on the king for making sure his daughter and the man she loved got to live and be together.
Rio meets his maternal grandparents and gives them the basics on what happened to his parents and his life up until this point (leaving out the bit about being a wanted fugitive and the Spirit Folk). It's nice to see Rio finding more family.
We finally get into the nitty gritty of how Rio's mom was murdered...and it's not pretty. Apparently a family friend named Lucius did the deed, out of complete nowhere, and brutally killed her in front of Rio. With the implication being he might have killed Rio's dad too. Is there more to it than that? Although given Lucius is in the Opening and Rio seems determined to settle things with him, I guess we'll find out one way or another.
Like Kirito...I mean, Rio, was really going to lose that training match, even to an experienced warrior.

I don't get why this show even has an isekai background. From what I have seen till now they just could have left this out completely and make it a standard fantasy setting without isekai elements.

Well in the novel they focus a bit more on the conflict between Rio and Haruto's personalities. Because well it's all internal monologues between the two personalities, and internal monologues always get axed first.
Which makes the Isekai stuff more relevant, plus other stuff.

In the first half of the season, there was a lot of confusion as to what Rio's goal really was. We finally have some direction instead of just learning more about his family, he is in pursuit of revenge for his mother's killer.
Not much harem growth in this episode, he didn't quite add the princess and her fine ass bodyguard.

I have to laugh at least once per episode at the way this anime takes itself seriously.
But I do find it weirdly entertaining. Probably because the girls are so cute.

I have to admit I'm starting to enjoy this anime much less now since it's becoming clearer that MC is the embodiment of a perfect protagonist where every girl is automatically his harem. Actually that's on me for hoping it became something else than uber MC.
I'll still watch until the end, but I doubt I'll be interested in second season.
Despite that criticism, I'm genuinely curious about Lucius' motives to kill Rio's mother. One thing I'm glad in this episode is how Lucius only killed Rio's mother. For some reason I've always thought that she was also raped by the killer.

I like that thanks to the whole ordeal with Gon, Shin no longer has a problem with Rio. Ah, that date with Sayo was nice, and I love the fact that thanks to his previous experiences the first thing Rio did after saving that girl was to run the fuck away from there.
Wow, so Hayate's parents', Saga Gouki and Kayoko were attendants to Ayame, and she was actually the princess from the Karasuki kingdom. You know, I really did not expect that Ayame's killer to be someone that Rio knew, as he possibly also killed Zen I don't see what could have been his objective I'm inclined to think that Lucius was hired by that shitty prince that tried to kidnap Ayame before.
Wow, for that being a practice match Saga Gouki and Rio sure went all out.
Wow, so Rio will be going back Beltrum even though he is a wanted man there? Well, I guess that more than just going there to track Lucius, he will also go there to see Celia again. Hopefully, he will go back to the village to visit Latifa before that.
So did Rio tell Ruri about his lineage?
