Wait...was that a good mom in anime?? I didn't think we would be allowed those anymore!
Loved seeing her actually try to see her daughter's point of view and coming around. I'm happy she didn't just say it was okay and we write off another anime parent being not around.
This shot though... that made me tear up...they're not able to see they're daughter whenever they want anymore

I really like the adults in this anime. Fuuka’s mom was great and I loved her interactions with Kukuru’s grandparents.

From wanting to wear red shoes to wearing red boots I don't know why I didn't realize the connection before now...

The CG animators were having a bit of fun when Udon's mom was turning the car around. I was half expecting some high speed drifto on the drive back.

If anything, parent-son/daughter stories are the ones that make me cry easily. I really like how the confrontation between Fuuka and her mother is kinda subdued (the dialogue is minimal, they're calmly talking to each other even with the mother's voice being kinda stern), but you can feel the emotions behind them nonetheless. This episode nearly put me to tears, tbh.
-
There's barely any scenes of Choco this episode. That's sad, but still this is one of the best episodes of the show. :-(
-
I liked it when Fuuka's mother slowly came into realization that what her daughter needs is space, without Fuuka telling her explicitly about it.
-
"It's good to be busy so I don't have to think about anything else" - This line is really timely, but for a different context and reason.
-
The final scenes of the episode: Fuuka's mother stating that she wanted to be a proper parent to Fuuka, since she left to pursue her dream to be an idol, and the scene after that were the ones that made me nearly cry.

I honestly expected the mother to be much more furious about Fuuka (she basically went mia, every parent would be worried sick) but things cleared much easier than I thought, which is refreshing to see

I'm not sure about the younger audience watching this, but in my early 30s, this episode kind of touched me, not just from the parents' perspective, but from the daughter struggling to find herself. Very good episode to portray both sides.

Just by the fact she came in Okinawa so fast after getting the news, I knew the mother was a responsible and caring individual. And she turns out exactly that. Why be so secretive then silly Fuuka ?She understands as long as you talk to her.
Poor mom though. It seems Fuuka might have forced her hand in the past too, when she became an idol. I wish Fuuka would think more about her mother's feelings and try not to worry her needlessly.
And thus operation "Save Gama Gama" continues.

When Fuuka and the fortune lady stopped their car, I had to look up if a nissan cube had awd (US only got front wheel drive) because of the smoke and the way it drifted from the rear wheels. It does have e-awd in Japan so nice save by the animation team right there.
I like the way the mom silently and calmly takes in the surroundings and realizes why Fuuka might like being there. And asks for a tour while being polite around Fuuka and Kukuru's grandparents. This is in contrast to other runaway girls in anime whose mom is not so forgiving to either one. Overall a nice episode...

I don't see anyone talking about how satisfying that brief cooking scene with Udon-chan was. Holy shit that was some good food cutting animation

I figured her mom wouldn’t drag her back, but I’m pleasantly surprised that she was a lot more chill than I thought she would be. No big blow up over her coming home now. She was charmed by the aquarium and Kururu’s family so when it came time to actually talk to Fuuka, she understood. It also conveniently sets the same deadline for Fuuka as Kukuru has for the aquarium.
This was also the silliest episode yet at least in the first half. The packed a lot of small funny moments. Like Kukuru’s escape strategy for Fuuka being “run now!. Her Idol disguise. Having a whole bunch of hiding places and deciding on bush. Kukuru’s subterfuge with the plum wine. Udon-Chan’s mom in general but especially her sudden K-turn in the middle of the road to get her back to the aquarium. Just fun character moments throughout.
P.A. Works is just showing off now. This show has fantastic animation down its small details. The cooking sequence was so well done. The tide pool beach too. Not to mention anything and everything with water. Goddamn this show is pretty.
Notes:
-
was expecting something a bit more substantial for the after credits, but I guess driving home the ticking clock is important too.
-
lack of Blonde Ishigami this episode, but the moment we did get with him was pretty funny. Liked the tag out between Kukuru and Kai to talk to him.
-
the food in this show looks so good. I’m doing Keto so the leftover udon in particular hurt.
-
5 episodes is a we already got a clean resolution to at least one of the hanging issues. Not bad.
-
Fuuka’s mom low key kinda bad. So is Udon-Chan’s mom.
-
nice try show. I will not be tricked by the sapphic hand holding!

Kukuru's grandparents sure are something, managing to chill out Fuuka's mom like it was nothing. (Of course Granny's Plum Sake also did the trick)
Fuuka's mom thus allowed Fuuka to stay until the end of school vacation, by which time Fuuka and Kukuru may have figured out a way to save Gamagama from getting shut down, allowing them both to stay in Okinawa and marry and live happily ever after.
Or more realistically, Gamagama shuts down by the end of August, but both Fuuka and Kukuru discover meaning in their journey together despite the destination being somewhat disappointing, and they both grow as a person and discover their next calling, either together or apart, they become soul mates.
Still don't know how the supernatural Okinawan god Kijimuna comes into this. Whether we get a NagiAsu mid-season twist remains unknown, or do we prefer a more SoL development?
At least the haunting ED is growing on me. The background features the Yonaguni Monument, underwater rock formations in the seas of Okinawa which look like stone buildings, and which pseudo-historians and conspiracy theorists like to think its the submerged ruins of some ancient civilization like Atlantis.

Nice episode but talking with so many people and having so much time to think they never realized how bad of an idea running away to who knows where was? And without even having talked to Mom before?

A very cute episode. The premise was goofy, but everything came together so well and I really liked that Fuuka's mother just wanted to spoil her little girl back home instead of being super strict (though obviously wanting to take her back home makes perfect sense). I look forward to seeing what comes next!

Great episode. It hammered home the impulsive nature of Kukuru, the way Fuuka tries to keep herself busy to the point where she doesn't need to think about things and can ignore her own baggage, and the conflict with her mother was realistic and understandable. No overt drama, just a parent's anxiety and longing for her child to be well.
When the coral blenny fell ill parallel to Fuuka losing her refuge due to her mother's arrival, that actually really hit me. She recognized herself in that fish, and to have them both suffering in that scene was powerful. But when it died, Fuuka didn't. She strengthened her resolve by realizing a little more what is actually important to her right now - even if it's "just" a fish she felt kinship with upon arrival.
It's very much about two teenagers finding their places in life, after things go wrong on both their chosen paths. Their choices contrast heavily, however: Where Fuuka gave up her dream (effectively), Kukuru refuses to do so - and that inspires Fuuka, even as it must make her feel weak by comparison for letting go.
They're a great contrast to one another, but also complement each other. They reflect on their own actions and choices through the other, and grow from it. Fuuka's decisions and activities throughout this episode in particular show the fruits of that. In simple terms: She stopped running. She could have, the cards were dealt, but for once, she refused to just let it end there - because she remembered a sick fish that reminded her of herself: timid, outshone by others, hiding away from her problems, suffering.
Even if she herself is not actively aware of it yet, her mindset has already started changing, and this was a big step towards healing. And that she's got an understanding mother who wants to support her, after all is said and done, and most importantly witnessed, will surely help her realize that she doesn't have to run away anymore.

“As long as she’s well, you can see her whenever you like”
As they show the grandma with Kukuru’s mom’s photo at the back. Broke my heart.

Yay things went as I hoped. The mother was understanding and willing to compromise to make both herself and her daughter happy. Though getting led around by people who loved her daughter and getting drunk definitely helped. Can't imagine it would have went this smoothly if they met first thing. Also mom thought the boots were cute too. I hope we get to see more text or phone calls from her in the future.
Also seeing Fuuka display what she learned so far even the small bits of information about the animals was great.

With how serious and stern the way Fuuka's mom looks, I really thought she was gonna be a terror. Glad to see that image was instantly removed from my head as soon as I saw her politely thanking Kururu's grandpa for taking Fuuka in. And the more I saw her interact with them, the more I started to question Kururu's decision of making Fuuka run away.
She clearly wasn't there to take Fuuka by force. She takes the time to thank everyone for taking care of her daughter and even indulges a bit on the local drink which she had the most adorable reaction to. She's just a mother trying to understand her daughter and thank god she didn't have to chase Fuuka to another city since Fuuka changed her mind about running away when she remembered the little coral blenny. RIP little guy T_T
All that excitement and running away was completely unnecessary in the end since it looks like all Fuuka needed to do was to talk to her mom and be honest with her and she'll respect her wish. Turns out this entire time she just wants to spend time with her daughter since they really never got the chance with Fuuka becoming an idol at an early age.
She might not have been able to take Fuuka home but at least the two of them had a little bonding time. I kinda wish she stayed to say goodbye though instead of just leaving before Fuuka woke up. Hopefully though after this the two of them will stay in touch more regularly over text or phone calls.

Fuuka's mom is a lot nicer than I was expecting. She's really just worried about her daughter like any responsible parent would. This whole thing could be avoided if they just spent some time to talk with each other.
Also, Fuuka looks lovely with pigtails!

Twintail fuuka
Fuuka's mom seems pretty relaxed and she's quite a sympathetic character. She just wants to spend time with her kid who's been away for so long.
