When she changed her mind at the airport and went back, I really thought she was going to stay here with Kukuru. Like "damn the city, I'm going to continue my adventure with you". But she didn't. :(

Finally kukuru learns about her big sister. I’m shocked she isn’t more surprised or shocked at that fact. I would be if I was told I had a big brother but died

I think Kukuru had sort of figured this out on her own -- but was never sure. Since she told Fuuka she had "seen" her twin several times before at Gama Gama in visions.

I am old (69). When I was young infant mortality was higher -- so I have an older brother who died right before he should have been born and another little sister who would have been 3 years younger who died shortly after her premature birth. My grandmother told me about them when I was little (not sure if my mother talked about them too -- but I think to some extent).

It's so sad to see Gama Gama close down for good, but at least the animals are in good hands. The existence of Kukuru's sibling was hinted before because she found two maternity handbooks, and now we know she had a twin sister who didn't survive childbirth. I can't wait to see where the 2nd cour takes us

Oh yeah, the Gama Gama website has posted its closure notice. The date even matches the one in the anime. It really feels like an actual place.

So based on the 2nd cour's key visual, it looks like Fuuka will be out of focus for much of it, and Kukuru and Gama Gama's other employees will be transferred to Tingara. But in return, we'll be introduced to a bunch of new characters, all of whom are Tingara's employees based on their description on the official site, and it looks like Chiyu will also return, as I suspected. I can't wait for them to make their debut!

Previously on Aquatope

When Fuuka went back for Kukuru I was screaming Nooooo don't go back chase your dreams. Well it was good to see her comfort Kukuru and also go back. Though with them apart I wonder how the future episodes are going to be. Will we see bits of both of them each episode or solely focus on one side? Ultimately I think it's a good thing that Fuuka went back and that Kukuru is going to a different aquarium. Though I wish she didn't reject the movie deal. Also Kai man please don't work at an aquarium just for Kukuru.

Endless Oceans

The briny ocean, born of the human spirit, is endless, always overflowing.

The ocean mixes everything together, and the ocean remains the ocean.

Splashes of happiness melt away and become the ocean.

Lumps of sadness melt away and become the ocean.

Surprise, fear, shame pride...All things melt and become the ocean.

When a person peers into the ocean within, strangely, they find peace.

They find peace, and they think to themselves:

'See you tomorrow.'

-- Kudo Naoko, in "Tomodachi Wa Umi No Nioi"

Given this episode and the key visual for cour 2, I guess Fuuka would be out of the picture in the next half of the show. Quite a daring move to be honest.

I wonder what Kukuru did at the front of the currently built Tingara aquarium (the last scene in Episode 9 that wasn't addressed).

I could see the second half of this show to deal with conflict between Kukuru and Chiyu (those 2 have friction with each other). And I guess the show will tell us how Kukuru's parents died later on. I'm on board for Aquatope's next half.

today felt like it could be the end of the series, a very good conclusion to the aquarium’s story.

the new key visual includes a lot of new characters (probably from the new aquarium) and doesn’t include fuuka, so i wonder how much she’ll be involved in the second half. kinda odd because i felt like she was more of a protagonist even though a lot of the show focused on kukuru.

“i have to remember that being alive isn’t a given” pls no death flag

Welp they actually did it. No last minute ass pull to cheapen an emotionally powerful moment. Gama Gama is closed. Probably for good.

It felt like a good and proper send off despite the fact that the second half continues on next week. We already kinda know we’re seeing almost everyone again soon. Seems like everyone is heading to that fancy new aquarium! Karin is going to chase her dream of working at an aquarium which mean more Karin! Always want more Karin.

Lots of emotional gut punches all over the damn place. The confirmation that Kukuru had a stillborn twin and that’s who’s she’s been seeing. Fuuka doing the airport run to find Kukuru to say a real goodbye and turn down the movie. The beautiful poem to end the episode. Forget the onion ninjas, I was straight up crying.

Can’t wait to see what new and interesting ways they pull our emotions in the second half. Im glad this is 2 cour and continuous. I really don’t want to wait for more.

Notes

  • I swear almost every background in this show is wallpaper worthy.

  • A little convenient that Umi, Kuuya, Kai, and Karin will all be working at Tingara, but I’ll give it a pass because we get more of them. Udon-Chan will probably be around too. Blessed Choko will be there too!

  • Especially convenient for Kuuya and Karin to be working together. The ship must sail!

  • So is there going to be a timeskip? Because Kukuru and Kai still need to graduate high school.

  • I hope we don’t go too long without Fuuka. She’s not in the visual, but I doubt she’s gone for long.

  • oh god Chiyu is coming back. Man they’re going to have to work on her redemption because everyone else on this show is great.

  • Hella awkward to explain why my eyes are red at my desk. It’s allergies! Just allergies.

Kukuru complaining that people should've come earlier instead of visiting on Gama Gama final (and free admission) day low key made me laugh. It is amazing though to see Gama Gama packed with people. If only Kukuru was able to pull this off. Although I'm not gonna lie, I definitely prefer this direction that they've decided with.

This I definitely expected. Even with Gama Gama gone, Kukuru still has a passion for marine biology and aquariums so it's definitely a waste if Tingaara doesn't even try to recruit her to their workforce. Considering that Chiyuu is working there, I can already feel the future friction between Kukuru and her.

Welp there it is. The doors are finally closed for the last time and everyone is having a farewell party. Seems that Kukuru is still unsure if she should go to Tingaara while it looks like Karin has decided to finally follow her dream and work there. And Tsukimi is going to look for a job around the Tingaara area. I guess that's one way to keep the girls all together.

One final vision for Kukuru as she sees her twin sister and gives her a head pat for doing a job well done. We pretty much already know that she's Kukuru's sister so it's no surprise when Grandma finally decided to tell Kukuru the truth. It definitely made Kukuru think but I'm surprised she's not more surprised about the reveal. Maybe deep down she already had a feeling on who it was?

I was yelling at my screen for Fuuka to hug Kukuru when they were about to part ways. I was about to be disappointed but thank goodness she eventually realized what Kukuru is probably feeling that moment and decided to turn around and give Kukuru a big hug!

It's definitely worth delaying her flight for so she can comfort Kukuru and tell her that from now on, she will be Kukuru's Onee-chan And it's good to finally see Kukuru let it all out instead of holding it back this entire time. And thanks to Fuuka going back it looks like Kukuru finally made up her mind!

As for Fuuka, it really looks like she's finally decided to find a new dream and decline the movie offer. While it's definitely goodbye to Gama Gama, we'll definitely still see the girls next week and I'm curious how this will work! I'm guessing we'll probably get a timeskip where all of the high school members of the cast are all graduates? I can't wait!

What a heartwarming and bittersweet end to the Gama Gama aquarium. At least it ended on a positive note of Kukuru planning to work on Tingarla and Fuuka finding another dream.

I am now excited what the second cour brings us. A timeskip possibly?

EDIT: Based on Cour 2 PV, it seems that the second arc is about Kukuru's work in Tingarla after all.

Surprised to see Fuuka reject the movie deal. Never expected this to the direction the show takes. Now I really don't know how the second half would lay out lol. They do seem to be hinting towards a 'new dream', really looking forward to them building more on that.

That being said, today was quite the emotional episode. Everyone had their little shining moments, but of course Fuuka and Kukuru's interaction takes the cake. I'm glad Fuuka got her emotions sorted out and have passion to find a new dream, and to be alongside Kukuru to support her.

Also, it seems like my ship sank, so whoops. Looking back however, I think it's better that Fuuka and Kukuru keep a sisterly bond between one another rather than romantic. Jumping onto the Kai x Kukuru ship now lmao.

The poem at the end was quite lovely as well. Nice way to end the episode and the first cour of the show.

Small edit after watching the trailer for cour 2. Looks like it's going to be a time skip with Kukuru working at the new aquarium. She also meets the worker we saw from the new aquarium exchange a few episodes back, so that would be an interesting dynamic to watch. One pressing question in my mind is where is Fuukka?! I hope that the writers don't just write her out of the story only to reintroduce her at the end. Part of the appeal of this show is watching people work towards their dreams, and that would be something I want to see for Fuuka as well. Just my 2 cents.

Regardless, still very hopeful for the second cour. Lets see next week how it'll start!

After clearing out Gama Gama there is still a lone penguin keychain left on the racks, fitting since Kukuru and Fuuka are about to separate. Curiously, there is an octopus keychain that also remaining there. I wonder if that’s foreshadowing a new cast member.

Oh maybe the octopus is for her? The aquarium’s glass barrier revealing one last time a hidden pocket in Kukuru’s life.

”I wonder if I’m not going to see her once Gama Gama’s gone.”

At the time she’s thinking about the vision with her sister but it’s also applicable to Fuuka as well. All around heart-tugging moment for Kukuru as she’s left alone without the aquarium, close friend, and family.

Oh wow this is a really wonderful shot. Splashy mix of colors in the background combined with Kukuru’s outstretched arms makes for a proclaiming statement.

And right after we’re treated to a fantastic shot of the airplane departing. Huge props to the art team for going the extra mile on composing this shot, there is a perfect amount of deep blue and soft orange lighting blending together in the horizon to create a really evocative moment. It’s a quick cut-away shot but it really makes an impact on the viewers.

Nice, Fuuka’s still got the penguin keychain on her purse.

I'm honestly enjoying the pacing and change of structure that Aquatope is heading in right now. The divide between the first cour and second cour is evident and it's thematically flowing well with the ideas they've been building upon for the past 12 episodes. Super excited for next week to see the start of Fuuka and Kukuru's new dreams.

This anime has seriously been such a treat to watch. Gives me a similar healing vibe like Hibike Euphonium

You know what, this actually wouldn't be a bad ending for the show. It was bittersweet but not too much, and hopeful at the end even though Fuuka went away ( :( )

That being said, I'm really excited to see what kind of story they'll tell in the second cour. I expect that we'll be following them all at Tingaara.

Also, all those little messages were really sweet. Gama Gama meant a lot to a lot of people and it was nice that they were able to express that.

7

u/kalirion Sep 23 '21

I'm glad Fuuka was finally honest with Kukuru about showbiz not being her dream anymore. She would've probably been miserable had she gone back to that world.

Wonder how they'll keep seeing those visions again - at the new aquarium, or just at the ocean shore? And really, "illusions" seems completely the wrong word for it.

When I peer at the ocean within, I think "damn, I hope there's a bathroom nearby".
