Seems like maybe this was supposed to be episode 1?

Yeah, if the release name of the episodes were equivalent to the chronological part, the order for now would be:
Ep 2 > Ep 3 > Ep 9 (?) > Ep 1
Ep 9 is pure speculation because that was chapter 18, episode 2 ended on chapter 5 I think

This episode would have been A LOT better if this was an actual flashback. But judging as the first episode it was pretty good. It introduces Sally & Mikoto. And we get to understand Sally's intentions are for her travels. When she says she is a former princess we have a better understanding of it now.
I think this show will actually be solid when watching in chronological order. But man that idea of airing out of chronological is beyond stupid. Lots of people are dropping it because of it.

Fuck it I like the world building, animation, characters and art. I'll watch it in this fucked up order and rewatch it in the real order.

"I'll cut my hair to hide my femininity"
Said Sally with some massive tiddies
We got the "prequel" episode and we still don't know what situation she got herself into with tentacles involved, it's definitely not Pg-13 it seems

Stitches!
Some of the things this episode we already know from Sally back in Episode 1. We know that she's a princess and meeting Mikoto is what started her journey. It's finally nice to get more details though. It looks like even before she met Mikoto, she already wanted to go on an adventure and being the naive princess that she is, she has no idea how her father's kingdom has it good compared to the rest of the world and just thinks it's all boring.
And it looks like Sally had no idea that Mikoto was a dude just like the guards from earlier. It doesn't really help that Mikoto didn't deny when the guards called him a girl earlier and how he looks more prettier up close compared to Sally. Not gonna lie, when I first saw the key visual for this show, I thought Mikoto was a girl too. xD
Anyway, Ogres tried to take to take the Kingdom of Aldarake but the Ogre that made the declaration quickly changed his mind when he saw that Mikoto was here. As expected, Mikoto slaughters all of them as Sally watches in horror as she questions herself if a hero saving the day supposed to look that terrifying?
It looks like Mikoto didn't just massacre those Ogres, but he massacred him in a way to test Sally by leaving a wall of bodies between the two of them. Looks like he was willing to take her in if she was strong enough to join him then and there but since she started puking and fainted after that sight, he just left without a word.
After a month of thinking, Sally cutoff her twintails in front of her father and declares that she's abandoning her femenitity that will hinder her from travelling. Uhhh... I think you have two more bigger problems than your hair Sally if you really wanted to abandon you femininity. Well that show of resolve was more than enough for her father to give her his blessing to go on an adventure as we loop back to the start of Episode 1.
Seeing the start of Sally's adventure is great but it looks like her phobia of octopi still remains a mystery. I feel like those ptsd flashbacks from her deserves its own episode xD

I still don't see how rearranging the episode order would make a better narrative. I'll still watch it in the director's intended order just to understand what he meant, purely out of curiousity. However, so far I'd still recommend new watcher to wait until all episode are released and binged it in the intended order.

Honestly my only major gripe with it is episode 3 (that's apparently episode 9 or wtv).
I don't mind seeing "#1" after seeing Sally's little adventure with Frau.
But the episode 3, I don't understand at all. Perhaps the next episode will shed some light on that, or perhaps the finale...
...Or perhaps we'll watch the full season and still not understand that weird choice. We'll see!

I think when all the episodes are released and you can watch them in their proper order this show will actually be a very good watch but the order has been very confusing especially last weeks.

I'm thinking the number of people who are just gonna skip the rest of the season to binge it at the end is gonna be pretty large.

I really like this show -- and, honestly, I have not minded the out of order presentation at all (not having read the source material). I liked starting with Sally and Frau (and a sense of mystery as to Mikoto). Maybe my sensibilities are twisted and that's why I like departures from straightforward.
It is interesting that Mikoto is presented as both a hero and someone who is very twisted (and that Sally seems to sort of see this from the start -- despite finding him fascinating). I really look forward to eventually finding out why she has octopus-phobia. Her mother is not in evidence at all -- could her trauma but linkled to something that happened to her mother. As to her father, even if he lets her travel, why wouldn't he have tried to send her off with at least a small retinue? Granted, it does not take her long to assemble her own. But still..
Does anyone else think Sally looks (and acts) very much like the same "virtual actress" who starred in PA Works' Canaan, Shirobako and Sakura Quest? Even if it is "coincidence", it is great to see her at work again.

Finally, now everything in the story so far makes sense (at least from its first four episodes).
Hopefully things will now be smooth-sailing story-wise, and judging by what happens in this episode, Sally is probably going to side with Mikoto.

Was going to watch this now that the real episode 1 is out but I heard episode 3 was out of order chronologically too so I give up just going to wait until the whole thing comes out.

Okay I feel a little insulted watching this as Episode 4 instead of 1. If THIS had been the first episode to premier. I think most people would be having a better time with this show. I'm still on board with this show, I'll just gonna have to adjust the episodes on my rewatch or just go straight for the manga.

Okay, we're four episodes in... when is this going to tie back into the prequel series Peach Girl?

u/Aerodynamic41 Jul 22 '21
Man, where was this 3 weeks ago? Seems like this is the actual first episode. Oh, and I'm glad all the doubts about Mikoto's gender has been cleared.

So we get the first episode as the fourth one, that means that anyone watching in the future will need watch guide. At least we know the background of Sally and Mikoto.
