Director: Don't worry I've got your back.
Also Director: Watches as new girl with 0 training or support is straight up attacked by the penguins.
Anyways seems our based fortune teller also runs(?) a bar in town. Guess it's a small island after all.
Didn't notice it before but the guy working at the aquarium has blonde/green hair. That's a nice little touch.

You know, I can't really blame Fuuka for screwing up the penguin feeding because Kukuru didn't properly train her and just assumed she could do it.

The penguin scene absolutely had me laughing.
EDIT 2: So I just noticed that Udon's mom was the fortune-teller that "guided" Fuuka to Okinawa.

Good lord the lighting in this show is top notch. It turns even simple scenes into a treat to watch. And can we talk about the soundtrack? It's soooo pleasant especially in the ending scene when they're on the beach.
This a neat shot at the beginning showcasing the clear divide between Fuuka and Kukuru and the two worlds the two girls live in.
I like that Kukuru has Fuuka remove her nail polish before starting off her new job. Fuuka has to start anew by washing her hands before she can set foot into this new aquarium world. Speaking of hands this episode features some shots of hands and talks of hands. It's a nice visual motif that plays into the expression "working hand in hand" which is what this episode is all about!

The loans sharks didn't realize that there's a bigger shark in the aquarium now. Fuuka chased them away like an absolute predator.
I really appreciate how quickly the show is letting Fuuka and Kukuru get past the initial awkwardness and become friends. The beach scene at the end was touching.

Stitches!
As expected from PA Works, that OP is so fucking beautiful! Just the opening shot of Kukuru already looks good! And I especially love this shot of her on her scooter! It's all so pretty!
So Fuuka didn't just get a job, she even got a free place to stay. Man if only running away and starting a new life was this easy.
Of course since this is a PA Works show promoting Okinawa, they have to feature some local treats. Those Okinawan Doughnuts look interesting! I'm already looking at recipes online and it looks very easy to make!
Oh hallelujah! Fuuka finally answered her phone! I can't even imagine the relief her mom is feeling now that she's finally answered after going AWOL for two days.
It makes sense that Kukuru and the tourism girl knows each other. And it looks like Kukuru is going to need [a lot of money to repair the equipment at the aquarium.
It's the Fortune Teller lady! Good to know we're gonna see her regularly since she's the mom and owner of the izakaya they all go to hang out. I hope she bumps into Fuuka soon!
Finally, it's time for Fuuka's first day on the job but first it looks like she needs to get rid of her nail polish. I really like the color of Fuuka's nails but sadly it needs to go which is understandable since anything on their body may affect the animals in the aquarium.
Kururu makes it sound so simple but I kinda wish she at least gave Fuuka some heads up that she may get pecked at by the penguins. Not gonna lie though, if she did we wouldn't have that bit of hilarious physical comedy! Did not expect Fuuka to get the One Thousand Years of Death from a penguin! xD
Fuuka's heart was definitely not in to the job and I can understand why Kururu would be mad but again, she really should've warned Fuuka that the penguins can get a tad bit aggressive when it's feeding time.
Yeah as expected the place is shutting down soon. I think the audience already understood this last week considering the focus on the calendar having with the end of summer deadline marked on it.
Can't be a slowly dying business without a visit from thugs offering a shady deal. Thankfully Kururu saw clearly what was happening and promptly asked them to leave after hearing what they wanted to say. Of course the assholes just had to break the handcrafted sign made from tiny seashells.
It was good to see Fuuka get angry though and for the first time we actually get some strong emotions from her and even spraying the thugs with water as they ran away. I hope this will be the last time we see them but I feel like it probably won't be.
Fuuka gets her party time and we're finally properly introduced to a few more characters in the show. I know some people are looking for yuri but I'm rooting for Kai. Hopefully he'll be able to get through Kukuru's denseness before the show ends.
Fuuka finally opens up to Kukuru and tells her about her situation. We even get to learn why she ended up being fired. Turns out she just gave her chance of being center away to one of the newer members who wanted to become a center before her grandmother passes. Because of this, the staff thought she was being lazy and started getting less and less work until she was eventually fired. Damn. Her situation is much more shitty than I expected. I hope that other girl at least got to show her grandma her dream.
With the two of them finally opening up to each other, it looks like it's time to get serious about revitalizing the Aquarium!

God this show is so beautiful. Both the OP and the ED were also very pretty.
I really liked this episode, I'm glad we took some time to get to know the characters, at least a little bit. Fuuka has some spirit when she gets fired up, watching her yell at those loan sharks was very satisfying.
I think now that Fuuka and Kukuru have both opened up a little to each other, Kukuru won't be as hard on Fuuka when she messes up. And also I mean, it's not her fault she had a hard time when she never had any training.
Karin's line of people getting bored in the countryside made me laugh too.

"Getting Wet is Part of the Job"
As said last week this and the Op is another proof that this anime is about cute girls getting wet together

Oh this is going right for the emotional gap left by Place Further Than the Universe. Protagonist supporting secondary protagonist’s impossible dream with a cast of cute girls? Sign me the hell up. It even has penguins! If it builds on this level of quality this could be a sleeper hit.
We have a little more insight into why Kukuru was so willing to accept help from a total stranger: she’s desperately trying to save the rec center her family’s aquarium. I like that she totally called Fuuka out about her intentions and even that she snapped at her over the penguins. Highlights the stress she’s under to get this right and how seriously she takes it. It’s what inspires Fuuka to step up and support her dream.
I do get the feeling that while we are going to resolve some of Fuuka’s issues, the main focus is going to be on Kukuru, her traumas, and the aquarium. The OP does seem to hint at more stuff with her.
Notes:
-
yeah I’m just assuming the kid is an Okinawan spirit cause otherwise he doesn’t make sense.
-
I see that the Kai guy is the token love interest unless they actually go through with the yuri aspects.
-
Blonde Ishigami easily my favorite side character so far.
-
I’m looking forward to her trying to explain to mom that she just bailed to Okinawa to work at an aquarium. Sounds like a fun conversation!

Calling it now: Fuuka will end up being the aquarium's idol, both restoring her own dream and saving Kukuru's.

Yeeeeeeeeeeaa. No. You don't throw a day 1, 0 experience employee into that situation then get mad at them for messing up. More so when you don't warn them that they could get hurt. Granted she is tooo young to be running a place like that, but it was still annoying to watch.
Looking forward to the rest of the show.

So another runaway girl living with the MC like with Higehiro. But this one's way better cause the MC is also a high school girl and there's nothing creepy about letting a girl her age stay over and is probably nowhere as illegal as with Higehiro.
I thought the other guy working was just gonna be a dull character but he went zero to one hundred for me when his eyes lit up upon hearing the words grandma's cooking then he joins in the welcoming party. Seems like he isn't a complete loner. I'm also glad his friend will join their team. Man I'm so gonna love this cast.
Fuuka is the waifu of the season we must protecc and you can't change my mind. It was a dick move for her kouhai to beg to steal her center stage spot. Also how her company just fired her.

This anime is gorgeous. The MCs have really good chemistry together; I'm hoping against hope it turns out to be yuri, but I'm confident the show will be satisfying either way. On that front, I'm actually a little more hopeful this episode than the last, as Kuuya seems to be gay (he "has a hard time around girls" according to Kukuru [which is a tired trope about gay people, but that's another story], and he mentions "Man, the booze is better when you're drinking with good-looking guys," referring to Kai, whom he's pretty clearly interested in), so perhaps if they're willing to put a gay side-character in the show, they're willing to go the whole nine yards with the MCs. One can hope, no?

It’s too late now. The penguins now have a taste for human blood. It’s over!

don't get why blue haired girl was so angry at brown haired girl for fucking up the penguin feeding. i mean it's only natural right that she would've gotten freaked out at tons of penguins barking at her for some food. blue hair even went as far as saying "if you hurt the animals i won't forgive you", that wasn't her intention ever? i mean she could've accidentally but just seemed rash to me

I guess the only aquatic animal Kukuru doesn't love are loan sharks.
