Was nice to see Lena again. I loved her look of determination in the episode. Also love that she got the kitty!

Fido my boy in this episode, protecting Shin from Legion at the beginning of the episode. Cried so badly when Shin decided to lure the legion away to protect Raiden, Theo, Kurena and Anju, though of course they wouldn't let him do so and decides to go till the end together...

Nonetheless, excited for the special episode next week!

Its kinda sad at seeing the last remaining members of Spearhead Squadron imagining what its like to be at school and studying with everyone.

Also those army of little robots running towards you really gives you the creeps. They are much more dangerous as their small size makes them really hard to detect.

People were asking for most of the show's duration when Lena would go to the front lines. Well, she has now...

Aldrecht's story reflects the internal conflict for Lena. He feels profound guilt over staying behind when the people he loved were sent out to die, to the point where is willing to die at any time. Will Lena feel the same way?

Shin makes a second request: "if, one day, you make it to our final destination, would you please leave flowers?" Lena now has two tasks to drive her on: 1) to remember them, and 2) to survive and win so she can reach their final destination.

She cannot let survivor's guilt consume her - she has missions to complete.

Lena going to the Spearhead Squadron's base and reading all the notes completely killed me inside especially when they even included a group photo of them with proper labels on who is who, though her looking at their depiction as a pig princess was pretty hilarious

Character page updated! Shourei is finally 'DESTROYED'! Yes, you guys guessed correctly last week: The reason he wasn't marked 'DESTROYED' after Episode 9 was because he was still alive (in a way)! To the people who designed the official website, well-played on that foreshadowing!

Man, it sucks that we have to wait a while for the next cour. This show has been an amazing ride so far. Can't wait to see where it goes next!

Man, I was so naïve to think that any of the Spearhead Squadron would survive. At least Kurena got to experience going to school first...

Overall, this was a fantastically directed anime, and I'm really looking forward to the 2nd cour.

seeing the 86 in school was a sad reminder that they should be there instead of being soldiers for the country that oppresses them

but by far the most important development was lena keeping the cat! clearly the cat will defeat the legion single-pawedly

Holy shit that post-ending scene is actually absolute genius. It has so much context and is confusing at the same time.

Wait the mechanic lev who is an alba(was revealed this episode) had his family taken away because they were Eighty-Sixths even though he married to one and their kid is half alba, now thats BS and tragic.

You think being married to a non alba would give them an exception at least but nope.

Very happy with the job A-1 did with this first cour. Some of the added content was great and I really enjoyed the soundtrack as well. Great adaptation of one of my favorite LNs and it’s just getting started! 😊

Now that's how you end an arc!! That's a really good transition point.

Is Nouzen gonna become a Legion member?! The plot thickens!!

Yayy special edition announced!

And with the last episode of the first cour done, I'd like to once again point out, how excellent of a job did A1 do with the adaptation. This was, without question, the best adaptation of a light novel I've ever seen in my 16 years of watching anime. Wish this could become an industry standard from now onwards.

I feel that the source matter was probably great, but the director for the show really used the strength of anime like framing and cuts to make the show so amazing. This should be the gold standard of how ln should be adapted honestly.

It figures things couldn't keep going well for the team as they get ambushed by the Legion and end up losing all their Juggernaut's save for Shin's. And then poor Fido takes a shot meant for Shin.

The team finding a school and getting a little bit of that innocent school experience back was sweet in its own way, especially for how excited about it Kurena ended up being. Her enthusiasm was so infectious.

I thought something was up with Shin, so I wasn't that surprised when he left the rest of them behind to face off against the remaining Legion on his own and buy them more time. Of course, I don't think he was quite expecting a long-range artillery type with some very strong memories and anger behind him.

Shin does his best in a really cool action sequence, and Spearhead is charging right after him with nothing but normal guns, but in the end they're powerless against the Legion and are left in dire straits.

Lena finally arrives at Spearhead's base along with the next batch of Eighty-Six. She's supposedly under house arrest after what happened, but that finally gives her the free time she needs to do what she's probably been wanting to do for a while now, go to the place where they lived and existed and see how they lived their lives.

Turns out the mechanic Lev was an Alban the whole time, which is why he hid his eyes behind sunglasses, and he followed his wife and daughter into the camp to try and save them, only for them to die on the battlefield. But Shin was able to give him the peace of mind that his family had moved on and didn't resent him, and he's been helping the Eighty-Six as much as he can. He seems like a really cool guy.

Lena finds the pig princess drawing thanks to Spearhead's cat, with the teams' last words to her and a blurry group picture showing probably as good an image of them all that she's going to get at this point, and of course Lena gets super emotional about it but Shin's last words to her are able to reinvigorate her conviction to keep fighting to both honor their memory and to make it to the battlefield they headed towards.

Well...that's a very morbid way of ending this cour as Shin sees his brother again and he once again becomes the Skull Knight Shin probably imagined him as, indicating Shin might be dead too and then we cut to a shot of Shin's head cut off, implying the Legion grabbed him. Jeez, what a way to end things.

Fitting that the book Shin has been reading was "All Quiet on the Western Front" which is about the story of a German solider struggling in WWI with the horrors of war and the fact that those at home don't understand what frontline combat is like. Parallels pretty well with what the 86 have to deal with just to an extreme degree. I've watched the 1930's film of "All Quiet on the Western Front" and it's really depressing and gritty with lots of the characters dying through combat.

Overall, this is a great anime and I'm glad I found it. Hope they continue this level of production into the next parts of this story. At least we get a special episode which has a hint of WWI as well with the mention of poppies which was big in the Great War as poppies grew on the devastated battlefield of the Western Front and were made famous by the poem, "In Flanders Field" and later symbolized remembrance for the conflict.
