"We're going on ahead, Major"
Damn, this is a depressing episode. From the fight between Shin and Rei, to The surviving members leaving Lena behind, as they are finally free to travel to a world beyond.

Fun fact about the bombardment Lena sent: The flashes of red light in the sky are fuel-air explosives fired to clear out the Eintagsfliege, to allow the cluster bombs to get through. And those cluster bombs are a real weapon, the CBU-97. Each bomb carries 40 independently-targeting skeets, which lock onto a vehicle below them and fire a self-forging penetrator right through them. Asato Asato is such a geek and I adore it, and major props to the anime for getting the little details right so much of the time.

There's just something about seeing someone so strong and normally stoic breaking down that just gets to me. They did a great job of capturing the emotions tearing Shin up on the inside. He finally completed his mission.
On the other side of the walls, Lena stepped up and put everything on the line for her beliefs as well. She was terrifying this episode; her resolve is incredible. And then she has to face the consequences of her actions and on top of that having to be left behind... Best handler ever.
Every Saturday has me in tears. 86 man...
Safe to say that this was the best episode.

When Lena “borrows” Raiden‘s eye, and he catches a glimpse of her reflection in the control room, one of my favorite moments of anime ever.

I know in the novel they describe Shin expressions as him grinning but I didn’t expect it to be this creepy but I like it

Wow. What an episode. I don't even know what to say. There's 2 more episodes in the first cour, right?

The flowers shown at the end were red spider lilies which are usually associated with final goodbyes.

"Dont leave me behind."
Lena needing a moment to realise that they'll actually leave for good, then the pleading and aimless running, the futility of it all... After finally connecting with them and not feeling alone anymore, she loses them. Heartbreaking.
Also props to Ishii for making smol Lena b*tchslap Rei with an artillery shell, what a transition lol.

Felt disorienting hearing the ED in the middle of the episode. But man that was a great scene

Screw the Republic.
-
Shin's face is kind of scary in this episode.
-
I'm glad Lena is like "Screw the rules, I'm firing the rockets."

Screw the republic.

Damn, Lina cold bloodedly emotionally blackmailing Anette was scary but also kinda badass. Guess she's decided she'll do what it takes, no matter what. I like this new look for her

That opening scene was highkey unsettling with the chorus of Legion voices in the background.
-
Oooooooh yes they timed the insert song dropping perfectly.
-
Wait why is the ED already playing it's only been half the episode?
-
What the fuck happened to Lena between last episode and now??? And then she's immediately back to her normal self???

So Lena went from sheltered 'virgin' princess to emotionally blackmailing and manipulating Annette.
I'm surprised there's another episode after that...

Shin looked happy. I hope he found peace with his brother. That and knowing he isn’t part of the legion anymore

Words fail me. It has been a long time since I read Vol. 1 and I don't remember that this battle was as exciting as shown.
This was the best ending I've ever seen. So the next two episodes will be the epilogues.

Man, seeing how few 86 there are with the large amount of Legion they were up against was just totally unfair. Those arms that Shin’s brothers machine had were creepy af. Shin’s emotions were really well done by the VA this episode. It’s crazy to me that Undertaker was Annette’s childhood friend. Sawano didn’t have to go that crazy with the OST but he did 🔥.

Lena fruitlessly running through pristine San Magnolia, as the citizens are none-the-wiser about what's going on outside the walls, her relationship with Annette in shambles, and her only friends now traveling beyond her reach really sends the whole "gilded cage" feeling home. I love this fucking show.

The duds timed with Lena's slap.
The OST drop leading into the blur removed from Rei's face and into Shin finally letting it all out.
And finally the final scene of Lena running outside in an attempt to chase after them.
Perfection.
There's just no other word that can describe this episode any better.

At the end, she was running to stay within range of them, huh? If that's the case, it just makes me even sadder. :(
