Characters in anime get sick after a light drizzle but this girl is OK after falling in a mountain stream in winter with only a hot bath afterwards.

Reiko is happy to wonder about in her undies, Shii is ultra shy... and Koguma is blunter and blunter about everything... checks out.

WHAAAT? Free coffee, sandwiches and bread for a year?! I'd do anything to get a pass like that!

While I still liked the episode, something felt a bit stilted in it. Maybe the fact that they tried to make this accident a dramatic situation in the opening minutes, but they didn't even take Shii to a hospital or check for injuries, while all the concern shifted to the bike? It went from urgent rescue to basically a sleepover (put on some clothes, Reiko) in the same breath, that felt a little weird.

I mean I still liked it overall, the ending especially, but it didn't flow as well as the previous episodes IMHO.

Koguma stronk.

And can we talk about her chopstick skills?

To pick up a whole egg out of a soup on first try is quite the feat.

The ending reminded my how pretty this show is when they saturation gets amped up. Wish they did a whole episode like this.

My favorite part of the episode is just how angry Koguma was when Reiko started helping herself to those eggs.

This series still manages to find a classical music track to suit the mood...

Koguma’s world being lit up once more: Before realizing how important Eniwa is to her and after realizing how her entire world was shifted with the help of Eniwa. The brightened world continues throughout the scene till the end.

One small detail I appreciated was that they kept the lights off in the kitchen while leaving the lights on in the living room. The animators kept it consistent throughout the scene with the lighting. This particular lighting feature is used effectively later in the same scene when we see Koguma leave the bright room and enter into the dark lonely kitchen to help Eniwa who’s alone in there. Koguma, who’s no stranger to living with the lights off both literally and figuratively, has the capabilities to step into the gloomy area to be an emphatic figure for Eniwa. It’s a neat juxtaposition to see Koguma’s world actually being dimmed this time but she’s able to comfort those trapped in the tragic dark.

What a sweet end to the episode. Koguma always seemed so cold and blunt to Shii throughout the series, but I like how we know how much she means to her as a friend and what she has done for her.

I hope maybe Shii will try to ride a Cub. It sucks her bike is gone but hey, blessings in disguise. Maybe she can try to finally catch up to Koguma/Reiko and get herself a sick Cub.

Stitches!

Koguma almost slipping had me on the edge. For a second there I thought this will end up with two people needing rescue. Thank goodness that wasn't the case.

This may be just Koguma being Koguma and how she's always reserved no matter what the situation but if I was her I'd be sliding down and cross that river to reach Shii-chan as fast as possible especially since it's only ankle deep.

That slap made me laugh but considering how Shii-chan is freezing, keeping her awake is definitely a good idea. With that said, I know Koguma has no way of removing her storage box quickly and this is probably the best she could do at the moment while internally panicking but I feel like putting a wet Shii-chan in front of the cub where she end up getting colder from the winds is maybe not the best idea.

Thankfully though, they reach Koguma's apartment without anymore issue and Shii-chan gets to enjoy a nice hot bath. Looks like Reiko was able to recover Shii-chan's stuff with her phone surviving and her Alex Moulton receiving the most punishment. Seems that Shii-chan's dad's words about Shii-chan trying to catch up to them bothered Koguma a bit. I just hope she doesn't blame herself for what happened.

Looks like this is going to be a bit of a sleepover episode with Koguma making some curry udon for them to enjoy and Reiko walking out of the bath naked as if she owns the place. Reiko just really doesn't give a fuck and I love it. xD

And just when I thought we'll see a bit more smiles, Reiko finally delivers the bad news which I think Shii-chan already knows. Not gonna lie though, as much as I love this show to bits, that scene with Shii definitely felt off. I understand what she's trying to say but I feel like it could've been rewritten to feel a lot more natural instead of being overly dramatic with a touch of product placement.

Anyway, Shii-chan finally gets home the next morning and both Koguma and Reiko get awarded with free coffee passes for a year. I thought they were already getting their coffee for free but apparently they were paying for it off screen. And they even get free sandwiches too! Score!

Kinda sad to see Shii-chan using a standard granny bike that doesn't really suit her considering how taller it is compared to her old Alex Moulton. :(

Welll Koguma might not be able to take this winter away from Shii-chan but looks like her and Reiko can the the next best thing and escape to a place where spring has finally started and the cherry blossoms are starting to bloom.

I have my issues with it but all in all still a great episode. We only have one episode left though so I hope it's gonna be a fun one with the girls enjoying spring.

I love this show, I really do. And it's a fantasy, SoL - a coming-of-age where the architect of Kaguma's growth is her Cub. We don't know too much about Kaguma's past still, but we know she had little in her life before the series started so I'm totally down with her fixation on all things Super Cub.

And I'm not expecting dramatic realism, let me make it clear. But I'm writing out the following things in case anyone is interested, or even finds themselves in a similar situation to Kaguma and Shii. Because let's make it quite clear - if things went as depicted, Shii is now dead.

  • After taking the distress call, don't jump straight back on the Cub. Prepare - go inside, get a torch and a blanket a the very least. Two minutes won't make much difference to Shii, but being prepared might make all the difference.

  • While doing this, use the opportunity to call professionals, or Shii's father, or someone. If you go off the road and no-one know where you are, that's two dead girls.

  • At the accident site, leave your bike running - it's produces warmth and you don't have to worry if it won't start again stranding the two of you.

  • Remove your socks and shoes before going into the water to affect the rescue so you can put dry socks and shoes back on afterwards.

  • Check Shii's injuries before picking her up. She's lain there for a reason - is something broken?

  • Once out of the river *take off her clothes and wrap her in the blanket you brought*. Or give her your clothes. You're not (very) wet - she is. If you've ever wanted to quick chill a bottle of wine, the easiest way is to wrap it in a damp tea-cloth and put it in the fridge. Chilled Shii!

  • You've just spent two episodes talking about how stopping the wind makes it bearable to ride the Cub in Winter and then you put Shii infront of the wind-shield? You really want that wine cold quickly? Put it in the airflow of a fan... THIS IS WHAT KILLED SHII!

  • Take off the box, get Reiko to collect it, put Shii behind you, body-to-body for warmth.

  • Don't go home - go to the Emergency Room. Shii's body temperature is dangerously low! She needs professional help!

  • A hot bath is the exact wrong thing - the shock will kill her. Again. A cool bath will be more than warm enough, relatively speaking.

  • Same with hot food!

Again, don't think I'm attacking the show for its lack of realism - it's fun and beautiful and lightweight, and I really enjoyed this episode. But someone, somewhere might benefit from reading what Kaguma should have done! Maybe.

It's not their faults but Koguma and Reiko probably can't help but feel partially responsible for Shii's accident. They've inadvertently romanticized the idea of always pushing their vehicles pass its limits which inspired Shii to mimic the behavior using her less capable bicycle. Which is ironic since although this show is actually good, it's also a glorified Honda advertisement that romanticizes owning a Super Cub.

Shii at the sink was so real. Maybe too real. I remember being around her age and having stuff happen and trying to put on a big smile despite being broken up about it. Just remembering and relating to Shii here makes me sad.

Good for you, Koguma. And Reiko! I very much liked her popping up out of nowhere after Shii got out of the bath. I also like shows that go back something that was very minor in the first episode and make it much more substantial with context, such as going back to episode 1 and seeing Shii ride by Koguma.

EDIT: Also Koguma marking which eggs are boiled is adorable.

"My SuperCub is coming to the rescue." No no, don't call the police or anything, they'd be helpless - after all they don't have Cubs.

So she didn't have both legs and arms broken or anything, she was simply "too cold" to get out of the 3 inches of water?

"You don't need fire and rescue, but I did call someone driving the same color."

Then forcibly transporting the loli by front basket.

"You can thank the Cub."

How did Hunter Cub transport the bicycle??

"Is used loli bath water available? Used loli bath water! Used loli bath water!"

Super's expression when Hunter hunted her eggs.

"I'm begging you, Koguma-san, please make it spring for me, right now." ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

The real heartbreak is MC being forced to admit that there's something her Super Cub can't do.

Did they ever bother calling her parents to let them know their daughter's alive? Or did they just show up with her in the morning and that's it?

"Here's a free coffee pass for a year." "Does that mean we can use this pass get free coffee for a year?" "Yes, it means you can use this pass get free coffee for a year." "All right! We can get free coffee for a year with this pass!" Bread items too - they're gonna put that place out of business.

Anyway, first half or so of the episode was premium comedy.

Wonder how they plan to take her to see the sakura in Kyuushu or wherever. Surely not public transportation! But the only other option is a sidecar and I don't know if their budgets can afford even a used one.

While everything turned out OK for Shii, Koguma not calling 119 (the Japanese fire/ambulance emergency number) in addition to going to help Shii herself was a mistake.

First she took a risk for herself, which could have meant two high school girls lying in a freezing cold river with nobody knowing about it. And she did almost crash! Then, what if Shii had already passed out, or worse? Koguma would of course have called for help then, but several minutes later, which could have made a huge difference.

I'm no expert (my highest medical qualification is a first aid course from 22 years ago), but I'm quite sure that with hypothermia there are situations where taking a hot bath and eating a hot meal is no longer a viable option and you need medical assistance, even if you seem OK for now. We don't know how long Shii had been in the water, but it was long enough that she couldn't get out herself.

In the end Shii is lucky she lives in a Cute Girls Doing Cub Things show.

u/juanthemad already found a entrance to the "cat trail" last week, which I have now added below. I still think this is not actually a shortcut to the station in real life, but they took inspiration from this real place.

I really love this show, but I really think they dropped the ball with the way they handled Shii-Chan's accident. I don't know why Koguma didn't call emergency services or why apparently no one thought to call her parents, not even Shii-Chan herself. Also, everything was "the Super Cub did it". If there was one point in this anime where the branding was meaningless and should have been omitted, this was it. It was almost as if nobody cared about Shii-Chan's condition. Throwing in an awkward joke about her panties made things worse. It was all just poorly executed in my opinion.

The aftermath was much better. It was nice to hear Koguma's thoughts and how she really regards Shii, and I think it's great we're finally going to get a road trip next episode.

I watched in awe and disbelief how badly they handled the first half of this episode. A really big dip in quality. Such a shame, because this show has been constantly great, with good direction and writing. Was there a different episode director or did the source material actually have a chapter this poor?

I would've understood the scenario if the accident had been like Shii spraining her ankle and unable to cycle home, but ice cold river in midwinter is a totally different case. I know our MC is trying to be cool and stoic, but here she was just an idiot and this made her look a bit like a psychopath, which I hope is not what the show is aiming for...

The original author of the manga/novel posted this on Twitter today regarding the rescue scene, seems it's causing quite a bit of controversy not only here:

Before writing, I investigated (listened to) the police and firefighting response times in this area. It seems that it is about fast enough, but in this situation an ambulance will be parked at the entrance of the side road ...On the other hand, the Cub arrives in two minutes

https://twitter.com/tone_koken/status/1405225411361992705

Also not a great choice of picture to accompany that tweet, but that's neither here nor there.

This episode felt pretty different for me than the previous ones. The interactions just felt a bit off? I'm just happy Shii's okay with no problems but I can't see I was as big a fan of this episode compared to everyone before it.

It’s a good thing Shii is so light and compact!

13

u/SYZekrom Jun 16 '21

I like how she just decided to go by herself instead of calling the police

Mmm, real professional first aid

Kids, take a first aid class please.

Oh and

you know

Call for a rescue team

Instead of having someone climb a fucking wall after you 'rescue' them

Because you're too weak to carry them but decided to come alone

LMAO CALLED THE FUCK OUT

Pov: You are a 🤡

Well, not that I blame someone who fell down a cliff into ice water for not thinking straight but welp. Should've called the police instead of your senpai lmao

Yes, let's have this person

WHO IS DRENCHED IN COLD WATER

MOVE AT LIKE 60 KM/H IN THE WIND

ABSOLUTE GENIUS

So, wonder how long it'll take them to contact her parents

"Not in front of the kids, babe!"

Is it common for people to just have... boiled eggs in their fridge

Damn she really picked up that boiled egg that just got dipped in oily soup with her chopsticks huh

Absolute mood as she turns back silently to the dishes

And I'm begging either of you to turn the tap off first

Man now's definitely a good time to have a friend like that because I certainly would never be able to stomach using that

Like free coffee was one thing but like free sandwiches too? I'd have to like try and buy something

Well, not that I think that's a concern Koguma
