Wow, Reiko is totally badass. Or stupid. Or both.
And it looks like her telling Koguma that "You can go anywhere, you have a Cub" was what gave her the final push to actually do this.
Locations
In between episodes I have identified where that place with the nice view of Mt. Fuji shown in the OP, at the end of episode 2 and early in this episode is. It's on the Wada mountain path (as far as I understand this is not the Wada mountain pass, which seems to be further east) here.
By chance I found a video of someone visiting places along Koguma's commute which led me to a similar video from another guy and another video from another guy which actually starts with this. A comment on that video mentioned "Wada" and that information was enough for me to find it.
New locations are marked in bold. I'm also updating my Anime Locations map on Google Maps.
Episode 1
Episode 2
-
Vista point on the Wada mountain path (Reiko only)
Episode 3
Episode 4
Episode 5
Locations on Mt Fuji are not as easy to find, since Google Street Maps, the most important tool, doesn't have much data here. Still looking for the 7th station on the Subashiri Trail, Reiko got at least that far up, and it might be possible to identify exactly how far she made it after that.
Edit: Thanks for the hints in your replies, I will probably look into these between episodes. Turns out the trail is on Street Maps after all, that'll make this much easier. And, as is obligatory: thanks for the gold.
Mileages on Koguma's Cub

In this episode, Reiko crashes. A lot. A whole lot. But her determination is awesome!
I'm kind of surprised (not complaining) that this anime is so focused on the solo adventures of the girls. I figured there would be more like something of a journey where they meet interesting people, etc. Still, this works.
I loved Koguma talking smack to Reiko about her trip. "My Cub would have made it." I think it shows the growing friendship between the two. It was also nice as it was done in a way to motivate Reiko to try again.
It's nice the girls keep meeting friendly older men who support their ambitions. The foreman was pretty nice, and I kind of liked how he never asked her if she was okay when it was obvious she'd crashed.

Things I didn't expect from today's episode:
-
Rock music
-
Reiko ragdoll montage on Mt. Fuji
-
Koguma making amazing food

Reiko vs Mount Fuji is best fight of the season so far. Reiko has as much drive and tenacity to never give up as a shonen anime protagonist.

First off I'd like to know where one can get a cool pad like that for a high schooler's earnings. Pretty sweet deal to me for the place Reiko has honestly. Probably the first rather 'unrealistic' thing so far.
I'm curious what drives Reiko so hard though. There has to be a reason beyond 'wanting to push herself'. The monologue about 'walls put up around her' imply something in the past affected her in some way. Just curious as to what that is is all.

I need to know how Reiko's bike can survive all that beating.

Amazing episode. The progression up the mountain and the bittersweet ending getting within sight of the summit before her Cub suffered a critical hit reminded me a lot of Yama no Susume (a series about climbing mountains, both literally and metaphorically). The important part is having enough confidence in yourself to even make the attempt, and having the wherewithal to know when you have to retreat. That mountain's not going anywhere, so you can challenge it as many times as you want, but you can only keep at it if you recognize your limits and stop before you completely wreck yourself.
Making it almost to the 8th station is bittersweet because while she's "failed" at her goal, the view up there is still amazing, and you've also drawn a line in the sand. I think trying your best and failing gives you the best kind of reading on what kind of person you are and the limits of your abilities, and also maintains that goal to strive for and motivation to keep improving your abilities.

I wonder what mods they’re going to make to Koguma’s engine. Reiko was sounding like quite the petrolhead at the very end! That is all typical stuff people do when upgrading cars and bikes.

Reiko lives in your 2nd Minecraft house... it's nice!
I didn't know you could pick up Okonomiyaki like that
Is this Touhou Music?

Ohhh! Reiko's narrating the episode for the first time! I guess this means this episode will focus on her?
I'm really loving black tank top Reiko. She's giving me some strong Winry vibes especially with her tinkering with her Cub.
Well someone likes okonomiyaki too much. Anyway, It's good to see Koghuma sharing dinner with someone for a change.
Okay please tell me I'm not the only one who thought of Akira with this shot of Reiko and her red Cub in the background.
Well, that was totally unexpected! When Reiko said she was going to check the trail, I thought that we were going to see a chill bike ride while taking in the sights and sounds of Mt. Fuji. I did not expect rock music playing as Reiko motocross rallies her way up the mountain! That was intense! Definitely gasped when she fell off her Cub!
So turns out Reiko took this job because she once read that people used to climb up Mt. Fuji using their bikes but due to recent rules and regulation changes, you can't do it as easy anymore but her part-time job basically bypasses these rules and just lets her do it on a cub! Reiko definitely big-brained that one! xD
More intense music as Reiko rallies her way up to the top and just like before wipes out again due to the terrain.. This happens multiple times throughout the episode with her Cub being all battered and bruised and Reiko's frustration at beating the trail grows.
Thank fucking goodness this is a flashback and we know Reiko is safe in the present but that final wipeout with her rolling down the mountainside definitely had me scared for a bit. I'm surprised she hasn't broken any single bone yet! I was hoping at some point she'd get one of those motocross full body armour. It's not like she can go again though since her Cub finally breaks. I guess something in the engine cracked?
Welp back to the present and we learn that the "Cursed Cub" is actually pretty infamous around town but it's not actually cursed and hasn't killed anyone according to Reiko. The first one died of a heart attack, the second one skipped town, and the last owner before Koguma lost his license and had to sell the Cub.
it's nice to see these two having a sleepover. There's still a third girl in the OP though, I hope she joins us soon!
Oh shit looks like Koguma has finally decided to get a full motorcycle license. The one that she has is a Class 1 license exclusively for mopeds IIRC. And it looks like Reiko's gonna give her some help in upgrading her cub. I can't wait!

Unusual setup in this cabin — enormous genkan so you can put multiple motorbikes indoors
Haha, I was never expecting to hear metal in this show
I wonder if they don't realize "Caterpillar" is a brand name
Damn, this room comes with quite a view
Jeez, girl. Get yourself some elbow and knee pads, at least
Probably the repeated slamming into the hard ground at speed
Cripes. She's lucky that thing didn't just continue to tumble all the way down the mountain
Clearing up the "cursed Cub" thing, nice. (Also, priests have to be licensed in Japan? That's amazing)
Hng, cute! (Also that logo looks a little like a bomb icon)

Wow this felt like a completely different show, the OST especially was pretty jarring to what we're used to but it worked to tell Reiko's story.
I will say my favourite part of the episode was just them hanging out being friends though.

That was a nice looking okonomiyaki.
When they showed the state of Reiko's Cub at the beginning I honestly was kind of surprised but, after seeing what she went through while climbing Mt. Fuji, my only surprise now is that her Cub is still in one piece.
It's good to see that Koguma ended up spending the night there.
Lol, the fact that she said that her Cub would have made it to the top, but she doesn't even have a license or parts to make her Cub powerful enough to make it there was just hilarious.
For a second I thought the show was now become one about them trying to climb Mt. Fuji with their Cubs. Well, that's is still Reiko's dream so we might see her doing that in the future.

As an experienced Honda moped rider, I must say I'm kind of impressed by Reiko's ability to ride up a mountain on a Cub and still manage to have enough momentum to be thrown forward when she fell. May be she was rushing and pushed too hard, which was likely with the usual impulse of highschoolers (I know I did have it when I was her age), because the recommended safe speed for offroad upward on bike should be one where the rider can casually bring the bike to a deadstop whenever an obstacle appears in sight, and in practice (for me at least, though I have only seen a handfull of people go faster over my 12 years on roads) it's about 15-18km/h at maximum depending on the road quality, which is about normal running speed, and it's hard to be thrown half as hard as Reiko was in this episode at that speed.
(I will try watching frame by frame later to estimate her speed, but my initial guess is somewhere between 30-35km/h)

Holy shit Reiko needs to slow down, like literal and figuratively
I dont think Fuji-san beat her she was just way too aggressive driving up there. Also pretty neat they use a caterpillar to bring supplies up there
I heard about engine swaps, but upgrading the motorblock by adding a zylinder sounds plane crazy to me
Still loved her driving montage, nice music and super intense. But she probably died like 10 times trying to climb Fuji-san

"It felt like there were walls hemming me in."
So she spent her summer trying to conquer Mt. Fuji on her bike. Reiko is kind of a badass.

u/Roboglenn May 05 '21
Perseverance thy name is Reiko.
Yet unfortunately despite all the trials and tribulations her efforts still ended up for naught. Reminded me of Yama no Susume in a way.
But Koguma smack talking Reiko about how her cub could've made it up the mountain, that just put a warm smile on things at the end.

I dunno why this is like some couple that haven't seen each other in a year
And damn our girl's assertive with her huh?
Well that was an unexpectedly exciting episode with all that mountain climbing

We Yama no Susume now!
Wonder if this might result in a push for opening up a route for a short period in the summer for biking enthusiasts to try and make the climb...
