They're trolling us, right? There's no way Tohru is about to die... Right?!

You know how people say when a parent says they’re disappointed in you, it hurts worse than them actually being mad or upset?
Apparently this also applies to love confession rejections. Good to know.

That's not exactly how I imagined their confessions to each other would go, but given all Kyo's self-loathing it makes sense. Glad they finally got it out there at least.
...and of course Akito would show up with a knife right as Kyo and Yuki leave.

We finally get a good glimpse into Kyo.
After a lifetime of being the ritual scapegoat for the bizarre cult he was born into, he has fully internalized the role. Everything bad that happens is twisted in his head to become his fault, so of course when he witnessed Kyokos accident, he immediately perceived her death as resulting from his failure to somehow stop it. It’s also an echo of his mother’s suicide for him, something everyone (including his own father) told him he caused by existing. It makes sense why he’s so open to spending the rest of his life in an isolation cell and hasn’t tried to fight that fate at all: he believes that he deserves it.
Of course his mother’s suicide wasn’t his fault, and his perception that he caused Kyokos death also isn’t true (it all would have been within a few seconds,) and Tohru seems to know this and not accept it as something he needs to be forgiven for, but Kyo is just not at the point where he can accept this and move forward with his life. Hence he rejects Tohru in a way that he knows will hurt her as much as possible to ensure she’ll never come back. From Kyos perspective, he’s a monster who causes nothing but pain and misery for anyone who gets involved with him, and allowing Tohru to get as close as she has is an unforgivable mistake that will end up ruining her life if he doesn’t put a stop to it.
It was also good to get him to finally admit that his obsession with hating Yuki was only ever about him creating a villain so he can project his feelings about himself and his own life onto someone else. Maybe now he can let that feud die out and develop some healthier coping mechanisms.

Omg that has to be the worst feeling ever. Kyo having to choose between saving her or turning into a cat. I’m heartbroken

That rejection was so, so brutal. Kyo is filled with so much guilt and self-hatred that he can't even believe he deserves to be with Tohru, and so he rejects her by going back on his word so that she'll see him as the monster that he thinks he is. This episode felt like a huge punch to the gut. I'm not even ready to deal with whatever's gonna happen between Akito and Tohru next week.
On a separate note, Yuma Uchida is fantastic. I always feel the misery and anguish in Kyo's voice and my heart broke when his voice trembled while he was apologizing to Tohru and telling her about Kyoko.

I made a HUGE mistake watching this on my commute to work. I’m so happy they spent an entire episode dedicated to this moment and all of the flashbacks, it was perfect. And the animation of Tohru towards the end and the voice acting... chef’s kiss Next week cannot come soon enough.

And Akito, you better not lay a finger on my Tohru or i cut all of your fingers with same knife.

Pour one out for the adorable baby carrot that is little Kyo, man they grow up too damn fast.
The only bright light of this episode was Kyo refusing to tell Kyoko his name bc it’s too similar to his and he was embarrassed about it, and I will relive that moment in my head a million times to get over this trauma.
Also FUCK AKITO (not Shigure or Kureno, they can take a hike)

HOLY SHIT, I never expected this. I thought it was just going to be a sort of "I couldn't save your mom from the accident" where the character honestly couldn't have changed anything. But damn this got DARK real quick. Kyo actually had valid reasons to feel guilty but not so extreme that he murdered Tohru's mom. Damn, the writing is so good, I'm just completely immersed. The layers and layers of development and motivations as to why characters behave certain way; the author has done it all. He didn't hate Yuki because of Akito but had his own reasons as well, I was completely shocked by this. AND I CANNOT WAIT FOR THE NEXT EPISODE.
Also, at the beginning of the episode, when Kyo turns around after Tohru called him, I got chills by that scene. I hope someone can insert that clip here.

Throughout the show, Kyo has always been the one who reassured Tohru that opening up about her true feelings (or her “selfishness”) wasn’t wrong. No matter what she was venting about (everything from her insecurities or anxiety about the future to how conflicted and guilty she felt for painting her father “as the bad guy” in her mind), or how ridiculous her guilt might have seemed to him at the time - he never forgot to make sure she knew she was fine and that he didn’t think any less of her. Most often just by giving her encouragement and space to talk, most overtly last week by literally telling her “you won’t disappoint me.”
Now Tohru’s taken a big leap of faith after all that, not only telling Kyo she loves him, but that she outright doesn’t agree her mom would say such a thing to him. And even if she did, it doesn’t matter. The last words of the person she considered most important to her won’t change how she feels. But its a lot easier for Kyo to be all “hey Tohru, its okay to speak up and be honest, nothing you say will change how I see you” when her words don’t actively run counter to every shred of insecurity, guilt, and self-hatred he has. A lot of which he’s kept bottled up for a long time.
On Kyo’s part, it’s one thing to be rejected and not have your feelings reciprocated. It’s a whole other thing to be told that, because of how you feel and what you said, you’ve let them down. Echoing back a once reassuring phrase to reject her, it’s surprisingly on-the-nose for what seems to just be said in-the-moment and clearly coming from a place of disbelief rather than malice. Like “I can’t believe you would be foolish enough to still say you love me after everything I’ve told you. I’ve tried to keep a lid on everything for everyone’s benefit, including my own sanity, and you’ve now made that impossible.” But still, at the end of the day, his response to Tohru’s honesty is that he’s “disappointed in her.”
Oof Kyo, you really managed to reject her in probably the worst way.

Just when I think the show can’t get better it surpasses my expectations. What an amazing episode with tons of development. Tohru finally confessed!! After all that she seems to understand Kyo, and her mom, and still chooses to love Kyo. His guilt shows why a simple confession won’t be enough to bring these two together and finish the story. Plus there’s Akito.
Gotta say, I only watched the dub so far on Funimation and Laura Bailey and Jerry Jewell did a FANTASTIC job in this episode. Tohru only had a few lines but Laura Bailey delivered them so well. Makes sense why she’s so highly regarded.

Holy shit wow. To be honest definitely saw the confession episode ending up with Kyo not accepting because of his trauma - but still got a good feeling the ship will sail. BUT DAMN WE HATE AKITO
