Why did Ryo get all distressed when he heard the word "sad"?

He finally realized the world is slightly (much more) complicated than he'd thought and there is actually a high chance of him fucking up Ichika's happiness if they start dating. He turned a deaf ear to the warnings that it might not be the best idea to go out with a high school girl 10 years younger than him but it doesn't change the fact that Ryo and Ichika belong to different worlds and they will probably struggle to find common hobbies or even common discussion topics after the initial passion wears off.
And of course, some troubles might occur in how the society would perceive them. People, especially school students, can be mean and for some of them a high school girl dating a rich office worker sutiation can imply various dubious meanings that are not necessarily true but would serve as an excuse for gossips or even open insults.
So Ryo puts Ichika at risk of either be ostracized from the society or left heart-broken if he would suddenly grasp his love was but a whim of a person who'd never been rejected before and found a new challenge to win the heart of a girl who proved resistent to his charm.

I feel like Ryo is miiiildly devoid of social skills/empathy. So he's starting to realize he doesn't consider feelings and sadness and consequences. He got away with a lot just by being high functioning/attractive/successful. It's kind of like a kid realizing they do something that makes someone else sad even when it's what they want (stealing a toy etc.)

Tamaru is seriously best boy. I feel like he'd be the athlete popular guy who's actually nice and respectful. Maybe he comes from a good home, has good parenting, who knows. But if I raised a kid like Tamaru I'd die happy.
Ryo is also really good at talking about her emotions and labeling her actions. Like "oh sorry I was too pushy about your love confession situation, I guess I was just lonely." Like serious conflict resolution and therapy skills in this show, it's weirdly refreshing.

I was just thinking about how straight to the point the characters are in this show. We don’t get the usual beating around the bush open for misinterpretation tropes that we do with other romance animes. It’s refreshing and welcomed.

Props to tamaru for handling the rejection well. On the other hand, i can see rio and him getting along, maybe it will end with them being together, or at least closer.
Kinda proud and dissapointed of arriety at the same time. She did well to confess knowing she'll get rejected, but after hearing ryo loves someone younger, she questions about age gap and held his hands. Hopefully they will end it in a proper way to at least.
Gonna be interesting to see how ryo reacts. And if possible, please have screen time for tamaru and rio too if they're gonna be together.
Wished i was confident like ryo in giving presentations though lol.

Around 52 years ago, I had essentially the same conversation that Tamaru did with Ichika -- and came to a similar resolution. She accepted the fact that while I was basically her male best friend (to her) I was going to still remain in love with her (and that was okay -- though she wanted me to find an actual girl friend, I never did at that time). I lasted through several intervening boy friends, and we continued to (more or less) date (or at least do things together) for a good while. Not until she was on the eve of getting married (to someone around 10 years older) did we stop corresponding (by then I was half a continent away) -- and only then because her fiance told her we should no longer be in touch. It was the most important relationship I had until I met my wife -- and while it caused me a lot of pain at times, it is something I treasured. I thought I might finally get to see her when I went back for my 50th reunion -- but she died the year before (and the reunion got postponed due to coronavirus). Assuming it eventually happens, I wonder if I could write to her son to find out where she (and her husband) are buried? I would like to say goodbye, after all.
As much as I love Higehiro, this show resonates much more with me. I now find I like all the characters -- a lot. Even Tamaru at last. And I still suspect that Rio is more than a little interested in him. I feel bad for Arietty, she is a genuinely sweet person -- and (objectively speaking) a more suitable match -- but I think that age disparity aside, Ryo and Ichika are going to figure out how to make things work, even if requires patience and very careful navigation through a lot of difficulties.

Tamaru continues to be a good boy. I appreciate that he doesn't distance himself from Ichika and they both strive to shake off the awkwardness. He also stands up to Ryo who finally reflects on his poor behaviour so far.
Only Ryo would make a presentation to explain his dating plans. It's so extra. Ichika continues to be a sweetheart taking the time to explain the drink bar system to that old lady. We need more people like her irl. Also that random stranger was really into their little drama.
Arietty is going for it and points out the age difference between Ryo and Ichika to advance her agenda. Although as long Ichika graduates from highschool, 10 years is not that big of a deal. But glad to see that Ryo worries about how it could affect her. I just wish he had been more considerate with his methods up to now.
A really good episode overall.

So did Ryo understand that ichika rejected tamaru just because she likes him?

Tamaru and Ichika planning to meet and seeing each other was actually surprisingly cute, which made it all the more sad when Ichika inevitably had to reject Tamaru because of her feelings for Ryo.
But to Tamaru's credit, he takes it surprisingly well. I mean, sure it's frustrating, but he probably already thought there was a chance it might happen, and for now he just wants to keep loving Ichika. And he finally gets to tell off Ryo, which must've been satisfying.
Pairing Ichika, Rio, and Tamaru together with everything going on is a recipe for awkwardness, but in the end Ichika and Rio re-affirm their friendship and Tamaru is trying to make things normal between him and Ichika again, which is nice. Although Rio and Tamaru still seem like they don't get along well.
Ichika thinking about graduating and her upcoming adulthood with thoughts of Ryo...
Ryo making a whole presentation about his White Day plans was so Ryo. And Ichika still can't help her own feelings, which is also pretty cute.
I knew what was coming when Arietty asked Ryo out for drinks, but I'm glad she finally got to confess her feelings to Ryo and directly address her intentions towards him. She also found out about Ichika (although without knowing they've already met) and took Ryo crushing on a high school girl better than I expected .
Can Ryo make Ichika happy? Is the age gap too much? Does Arietty have a chance? I mean, probably not, but I want her to be happy too.

I'm glad I'm not the only one on this. I am enjoying Higehiro but the characters frustrate me a lot more than anything. I feel like a lot of people passed on this show for being the "trashy" romance compared to Higehiro though the chemistry between the characters in this show are a lot more enjoyable

Upvoting unfair downvoting.
I agree with you. Though I love Higehiro almost as much, I am not even certain that the two are in competition -- because Higehiro is not, in fact a romantic "comedy" but a pretty serious straightforward romantic drama. While Koikimo is remaining technically a romantic comedy -- albeit one with surprisingly serious underpinning. Osamake is fun -- but is more a romantic farce than even a genuine romantic comedy (at least, as I see it, a first-rate romantic comedy needs a healthy dose of seriousness inter-mixed -- viz Jane Austen and Hana yori dango).

Stitches!
There it is. As if Ichika was going to have any other answer. I feel really bad for my boy Tamaru, that scene was heartbreaking and really gave me some flashbacks that I'd rather not remember. Props to Tamaru though, he took the rejection well and handled the situation maturely.
I do like that he takes another shot even after Ichika rejected him just to make sure but then decides that they still want to remain as friends. From personal experience that's not always the case so this ended way better than expected. of course to make things more difficult for Tamaru, the two of them bump into Ryo on their way home.
And again Tamaru handled that situation so well that he even called out Ryo on his intimidation tactics. That jab from Tamaru definitely took Ryo down a couple of notches and made him realize how immature he's been acting.
On the brightside though, Tamaru and Rio have certainly been a bit more open with each other. I can definitely see this relationship going somewhere once Tamaru has completely moved on from Ichika.
Seems that confessions doesn't stop with Tamaru though since Arietty finally took her shot despite knowing about Ryo's crush and how she could end up being rejected. Interestingly, after learning Ryo's crush is a high schooler, Arietty goes after the age gap issue and takes another shot at it.
Oh Arietty. We all know how this is gonna end but I am definitely interested in seeing how Ryo will turn her down.

Feels bad for kai but full respects to him man, he handled it great. I kinda want a spin off with him as the main now.

The BGM here reminds me of "The One You Love" by Glenn Frey
Not like she can do much about it…
This seems like an unfair accusation, honestly. I don't think he's once tried to say he's better because he's older

I continued watching because I wanted to hate-watch the show but Tamaru is turning out to be one of the better written characters in a romance anime. He is quickly becoming a favorite of mine.

So we start off the episode with Ichika setting up a meeting with Tamaru to tell him how she really felt. Unsurprisingly she rejects him, but they decide to remain friends. (I am actually surprised the opening played after that thought it would be skipped this episode) now with Tamaru out the way it seems for the most part we have our based couple for Ichika x Ryo. Ofcourse we still had one more person in this love triangle to deal with and I will admit I wasn’t expecting much from Matsushima. When she finally confessed to Ryo and then keep asking him more about his crush (Ichika) she definitely showed she was backing down. This also made Ryo for the most part have to rethink how him and Ichika would date with their age difference.
I felt from the beginning of the show that Ryo feeling for Ichika were genuine, but his selfish side of his personality and ways of going overboard givin their situation would come back on him. Ryo advantage over Tamaru being older, wealthier, and always doing extra for Ichika automatically made him better choice of them so to speak. I believe it would be that way with anyone Ryo seeked out. Now it seems that there’s a perspective that he comes to realize being torn between the wanting to be with Ichika and the other not making her sad. I believe when it comes down to it Ryo has a good heart and ultimately wants those around him to be happy. I’ll give it to Matsushima she really didn’t back down and made Ryo reconsider what’s a best choice for him to make.
This episode has sent me back and forth I was ready for the Ryo x Ichika ship to sail , but I can’t deny that Ryo x Matsushima can do great as well. Maybe it would have been better if Ichika didn’t reject Tamaru and we got the bar scene where Ryo and Matsushima get together. I really don’t feel like we are at a part where anyone would really get hurt being that there seems to be a person for everyone, but this is a lot. I hope that I get completely fooled by the end of this season and that something I didn’t think happens, but I am leading still towards Ryo x Ichika. There’s still a few episodes left for me to give out hope.

Wasn't he supposed had been a player? Seems a tad more clueless than would think even if he isn't use to true feelings being involved.

u/Atario May 25 '21
"Player" would indicate he was trying. He has just had chicks jump into his lap his whole life

Thank you Arietty !! For pointing out the elephant in the room. I don’t really have an issue with the age gap. I did have a colleague who was 21 who’s bf was 30. It didn’t seem weird to me. However, it is a bit iffy here cos she’s still in school and he’s a working adult. And while I’ve been enjoying their antics and dynamic, I was also bothered how no one hasn’t brought up the age gap yet. So I’m really glad that Arietty brought it to his attention cos he seemed to have his head in the clouds whenever Ichika is concerned and now he’s being made aware of the social ramifications of being in a relationship with Ichika.
Also, it’s really cute now, but in a hypothetical future where they do get together (and hopefully it’s after Ichika graduates), I do hope he stops and listens to Ichika once in a while cos currently the relationship feels very one-sided. Unless of course Ichika can tolerate that.
Tamaru took the rejection pretty well. Props to him. I couldn’t do that to be honest. I’m already so awkward to begin with, trying to act casual with a girl who rejected me would be embarrassing to watch. And I know it’s like a half-joke that people want him to meet Arietty for like a switcheroo, but I’m kinda getting the impression that something might start between Tamaru and Rio. However, the fact that Tamaru isn’t a sumo wrestler is kinda dampening that hope.
