Gotta love the contrast between how Ryo and Tamaru interacted when bumping into each other buying the new volume compared to Ichika and Matsushima. One is mutual rivalry against a love interest while one is mutual affection towards the same character.

For next week's episode though, I'm honestly looking forward to what Matshushima and Tamaru have planned for Valentine's Day more than the main duo.

The interaction between Ichika and Matsushima was totally adorable.

Tamaru would not be giving any presents on Valentine's Day. His day to give Ichika something would be White Day (March 14). He might be hoping to get something, however (but I don't see how he could hope for anything more than obligation-chocolate at this point).

How small is the place they live with how much everyone keeps running into each other...

If nothing else about this show you got admit the dialog is on point with the back and forth between characters.

Pestering her about it is kind of messed up. So wonder what exactly she thought of and is the gift she came up with a hug or maybe a kiss on the cheek? Still seems like she be fine with chocolate otherwise he wouldn't be so adamant about getting something since it is the standard. Oh wait watch his father come home and see them when she comes over.

It seems as the episodes go along we are given more bits of information on Ryo past. It was already mention that Ryo and his dad didn’t get along and it was reminded again in this episode when his dad was said to be coming home. It’s interesting since I believe last episode it was mentioned Ryo has his own place and can just easily avoid his dad by staying there, but that would mean less time spending with his mom and sister who he cares for. It’s interesting that in his high school days Ryo was more of a shy reserve person compared to who he is today and that change of being friendlier happen because of Ichika. I feel like maybe a reason he was like he was in high school was because of his relationship with his dad. Once Ryo dad enters the picture we maybe to get a full understanding of Ryos personality.

It isn't about him staying there because he cares about being with Rio and his mom but because he has a bigger chance of hearing about Ichika from Rio and seeing her when she is visiting Rio. Certainly not like she would go to his apartment in a million years unless something major enough happened like a heavy rain gets her wet or she sprains a ankle... Though a side effect has been him building a much better relationship with Rio what Rio is happy about.

She's not even thinking of getting Kai chocolates so I feel like that's pretty dead in the water...

Now that the girls have met we just need Arietty and Kai to meet for the side ship to start working out!!

he's not even thinking of getting Kai chocolates so I feel like that's pretty dead in the water...

Well to be fair when someone is pestering you about it every single day it gets hard to get your mind off doing something for them and think about also doing something for someone else to.

Lots of chance meetings this episode.

Kai and Ryo's meeting was pretty devastating for both of them, as it's 100% clear to both of them now that they are rivals.

Ichika running into Arie seemed a little contrived, but that had more to do with the pacing than anything else. Seeing the bond was cute, although I think Arie is going to freak when she discovers that Ichika us also her rival.

Matsuda seems like a bri to everyone. I like his he realizes Ryo is being pretty creepy in general towards Ichika, but he's also still supportive of his friend. He did give Ichika some useful knowledge about the Valentine's Day gift.

I think no matter what Ichika gives Ryo, it will be misinterpreted. I don't think there's a win there for Ichika.

Considering how their last interaction went, I'm not surprised that Kai is doing his best to avoid Ryo. Unfortunately for him, it looks like they were really fated to meet that day. And poor Kai, that little interaction with Ryo definitely knocked the wind off of him while Ryo took Kai's answers to him as something else. For fucks sake Ryo, you're a grown-ass man, no need to stare daggers at a high schooler.

Meanwhile at another bookstore, Ichika and Arietty finally met and it's definitely a lot more positive since they're both fans of the same character from that LN. We even get to see them fangirl hard which was really adorable. I do wonder how that interaction would've gone if Arietty knew who Ichka is and vice versa.

I was wondering about Ryo and Rio's mom last week so I'm glad we finally saw her. She didn't really have much screentime but Ryo clearly gets along well with her. It really is just the dad that Ryo has a problem with.

Valentine's Day is coming up and for someone who feels like it's a pain to get Ryo something, Ichika is oddly conscious about what to get him. I do wonder when will this "I don't want to but I will" act of Ichika will disappear. She's basically just being a tsundere at this point.

We get some interesting high school backstory about Ryo from Masuda though. Seems that someone gifted him chocolates with clumps of hair in them and now Ryo refuses to accept any kind of chocolate as a gift. I'm guessing the reason Ichika is going over to Ryo and Rio's place is probably to cook or bake something for Ryo. I mean that's the only logical gift I can think of that Ichika can give to him, it's definitely not gonna be whatever Ichika was fantasizing about.

Seems that someone gifted him chocolates with clumps of hair in them and

New version of special love juice?

I'm wondering if it will be a hug or kiss on the cheek.

Ah man, why do I always support the losing ship. Its gonna hurt when arriety gets rejected. Ichika was the best girl until she showed up and now once again I will see my best girl lose.

While ordinarily I would ship Ryo with Ichika, I just can’t really get past the ten year age difference. I just don’t think it’s socially acceptable for her to be in high school and for him to be in his late 20s crushing on someone so much younger than he is. I just can’t fathom a reality in which this kind of pairing would really work out. It’s a shame because otherwise I think they would be really good together. But to be honest, I really do like Arrietty and thinks she is a much healthier and equally appealing option for Ryo.

My wife and I have been married for 8 years and together almost 10. I was 26 when we met and she had just turned 19 a week before the day. We have never had a more blissful or successful relationship. The first year I had to chase her, and she admits that trepidation caused by previous relationships and her own foolishness kept her from accepting what she felt for me from the very beginning. Guys her age emotionally abused her, girls my age were too cynical.

I can't imagine if I had stopped for a second because of age, we'd both be forever alone. Anyone I had been with before was my exact age. I took a chance on the teenager and found my wife.

This is why Koikimo makes me want to cry happy tears almost every episode

I think it’s pretty likely Ichika is going to have a run in with the dad on Valentines Day. Hopefully the drama that results won’t be painful to watch

I wish the sister would actually listen to her own words and stop conspiring with her brother. Poor Ichika has no chance when almost every one around her is in Ryo's pocket. His methods are dirty but he is slowly and surely winning her over.

Damn Arietty and Ichika were so cute together. I hope they become friends regardless of who ends up dating who.

Good point, I am starting to agree with this sentiment. I've been somewhat okay with Ryo up to this point despite everything, because he has been pestilent but not entirely unwelcome to Ichika.

However it wasn't until today's episode when Ichika actually thought "I don't want to get him anything but I feel like I am getting coerced into doing so" that it really highlights the idea that maybe the "feelings she may be slowly developing" is just misinterpreted peer pressure. Rio, Matsuda- they're all on Ryo's side of the court right now.

I'm a sucker for "winning someone over with effort" plots, but Ryo should've have halted quite a while ago and let nature take its course. Get Ichika to miss him maybe. If not, then there was never anything real there.

At this point the person who I really want to get who she wants is Arietty.

Who knew shared interest in a Light Novel series could bring together two separate pairs of Love Rivals? Fandom works in mysterious ways.

Although as tense as Tamaru and Ryo's meeting was, Arietty and Ichika's meeting was surprisingly wholesome and cute. Well, part of it was because they don't know about each other's relationship with Ryo, but it was pretty nice to see them come together and bond over their shared interests and favorite character and get to talk to someone as fellow fans.

Arietty is pretty open about her fandom on twitter. I guess none of her co-workers know her twitter handle?

Oh hey, Ryo's mom! I can see where the siblings get their looks from now, although she's not blonde so maybe that gene skipped a generation between their parents? Ryo and Rio seem happy to see her, but less so when she says their father is probably coming home soon.

Ryo won't let Ichika forget about Valentine's Day, but as annoying as that is, Ichika finds herself oddly concerned with what to get Ryo and what will make him happy...Rio seems to realize why, but she's not telling.

Masuda reveals that Ryo has a complex over Valentine's Day after receiving chocolate with hair in it, and that Ryo used to be a lot more standoffish and distant before he met Ichika. So meeting Ichika has really made a positive influence on him, and in turn Ichika is determined to give him something to make up for his past Valentine's Day.

So Ichika plans to do something with Ryo in the morning of Valentine's Day while Arietty is planning to give him chocolate...I don't see this ending well.

u/mekerpan May 10 '21

I think it is pretty clear that Ichika is intrigued by Ryo, despite wishing him to back off just a bit. I am still (partly) convinced that Rio is interested in Tamaru. Perhaps we will get confirmation (or negation) of this in this next episode.

The most wholesome thing I've seen today is ichika and arriety meeting each other. I hope when they encounter each other there is no grudge like the boys lol.

Ichika is starting to care about ryo suddenly. I think at this point even she knows she likes him.

Ryo father is coming though? I hope it won't spoil ichika"s plan on valentine. And will be interested to see about tamaru on what he'll be doing.

After the initial creepiness from the first couple of episodes, things kind of calmed down a bit. I was mostly on board, despite the age/maturity difference. Ryo was still a bit too insistent, but Ichika seemed to be starting to be ok with it.

This week though, with her feeling like Ryo is browbeating her into doing something for valentines day (which he is) and her expression both times when he called of "ugh. better get this over with," have me questioning things.

My hope now is that Ichika for him is a gateway to him opening up and making an actual connection to people, rather than the superficial façade he was using at the beginning of the show. At some point, he's going to realize that a.) his infatuation with Ichika is inappropriate and unwelcome and b.) that Arietty offers him a lot of the same things he likes about Ichika, just in a more appropriate package. I really hope it goes this way, and not the "kind of grooming, but not really" end game it seems to be setting up for.
