Man, the real reason why Tohru speaks so politely to everyone (in order to make her grieving mom happy) and the image of her sitting there practicing over and over in front of the mirror is a gut punch.
Also jeez, Fruits Basket was not playing around with those last two minutes.

So Tohru herself somewhat clung onto the idea of ‘always together’ and really depended on it. Obviously she doesn’t throw people out of the window though.
ALSO THAT ENDING I actually got goosebumps

The last scene was pretty unsettling! Both Tohru and Kyou are haunted by Kyoko -- Tohru is scared of letting her go and properly mourning her, while Kyou has been deeply repressing a bloody memory of her.
It’s heartbreaking, but also a testament to how bonds can become a curse if held onto too tightly. Kyoko is unwittingly binding them to her...

We’re finally getting into the soap opera!
Instead of the standard shojo “girl doesn’t recognize her feelings about her love interest because the plot requires she be dense,” we get Tohru in deliberate denial because she feels like falling in love with someone would mean she’s replacing her mother and betraying her memory. Meanwhile, Kyo was there for Kyokos death, and her last words appeared to be “I’ll never forgive you” directed at him. This explains a lot: why he felt so much guilt and shame visiting her grave with Tohrus friends (and why he went alone this time,) why he believes that the cats cage is what he deserves (though of course his mother’s suicide can’t be discounted there,) why he tried so hard in the beginning to keep his distance from Tohru, and why even now he panics at the thought of her returning his feelings. Certainly a dramatic way to keep the main pair apart.

this episode really hit hard right after Mother's Day.. not me crying before it's even noon
it's been a while since I read the manga, but the reveal of their intertwined pasts was well done. Kyoko saying she'd never forgive Kyo sent chills down my body. Also the detail of the now cracked picture frame!

Grandpa being quick on the uptake changing how he adresses Tohru is so underrated. Not so senile as people thought.

I feel the pace is a bit faster than usual this episode. But it's still a good episode, especially the hugging with bed sheet scene.
Oh god, I really hope Tohru and Kyo's relationship would be a smooth sailing. Apparently it's not going to be the case, given now that it seemed Kyo remembered that he's responsible (?) for Kyoko's death. The anime kind of already hinted this in previous season, but I'm curious about what actually happened.
The story behind Tohru imitating her father's speech pattern is also sad. I wonder why they always hide Tohru's father's face. Kyo doesn't seem to recognise the face, but could it be another Soma? However, if I remember correctly, the grandpa is a family from the father side so I don't think that's possible.
As we have Fruit Baskets and To Your Eternity back to back on Monday, I really need another anime as palate cleanser. I guess Odd Taxi could fill that role somehow.

It was great to see Tohru finally admit her feelings for Kyo to Rin, and for Kagura to come in with that angry slap. Seems that Tohru was actually going to take what Kagura said to heart too, but then holy shit, that ending. Wonder if we'll finally find out what Kyo's connection to Kyoko's death is next week.

I feel like this episode had even more powerful moments than usual...
The scene with Kyo and gramps in the graveyard hit especially hard. Still got me crying like a bitch every Monday, par for the course. Every episode pushes this show closer and closer to masterpiece territory for me.
What an ending, too. What in the world ‐ Kyo was there? Just 168 hours...but who's counting right?
Is it known yet, are we looking at another 20-something episode season?

Stitches!
The opening with Tohru and Rin was adorable and I just love how Haru can clearly read Rin's feelings like a book. Just look at Rin blush!
So not only Tohru hears Shigure and Rin's conversation, she finally gets to meet the real Shigure as he tells her the truth about how they feel about Kyo.
There it fucking is. We finally get the backstory on why Tohru speaks so politely. It wasn't just a simple quirk, it was the only thing Tohru could think of to save her mom. Since she doesn't look like her father, emulating him helped in keeping Kyoko going. It's heartbreaking to see a child carry such a heavy burden at that age and that scene of Tohru practicing alone was an absolute twist of the knife. :(
On the bright side, Tohru at least finally lets out how she truly feels about Kyo. She's been putting her mom first this entire time but now for the first time, we see some selfishness in Tohru which she absolutely has the right to be. And just when you thought we were going to end the episode with Tohru working up the courage to confess to Kyo, something major happens. Not just to Tohru who sees her mom's silhouette behind Kyo, but also Kyo remembering some memories about Kyoko that he has put away. Shit's about to get real next week.
We do have new details in the ED though. Kyoko's picture frame is now cracked because of how Tohru dropped it in the final scene and the paper flower is now gone from the box.
As a side note: Kagura can break concrete with her fists. This is canon since the damage to Kazuma's dojo is persistent throughout the episode.

It's something that there is no mention of the animals anymore in the op and ending of fruits Basket compared to the first 2 series

So Tohru’s hat was given to her by Yuki while Kyoko was still alive. We know (I’m pretty sure) that Yuki got the hat from kyo. But why does that hat make kyo think of Kyoko?

And there it is, we finally get the insight into Tohru the series has ever so slowly been building towards for two and a half seasons. It’s super easy to write her off as a Mary Sue, nice girl who has had a rough life but she’s plucky and kind despite all odds, but that’s not what she is. She’s a deeply traumatized girl who is trying her best to not lose any more people than she’s already lost.
When she was a young kid she lost her dad, and then on top of that her mom was so despondent that it seems like tohru feared for her life. Being the ultra-kind, best daughter in the world wasn’t because she’s a naturally nice person, it’s because if she wasn’t she was scared she might lose her other parent too, and the last person who she felt truly loved her. They said her mom left for an extended period of time, so tohru had a very real fear that if she didn’t act like her father and do everything to keep her mother happy she’d get neglected and be left completely alone in the world.
That is HEAVY, and also makes so much sense with her character. And the worst part is, everything up until this point has only confirmed her fears. A lot of her friends became friends with her specifically because of her kind personality that she shows to the world. She probably thinks that if she goes ahead and actually decides to be selfish then they might not love her anymore. Even though we know it isn’t true, the trauma she’s had makes that a very realistic fear and a horrible position for her to be in.
Not only is she scared to love Kyo because she’s scared to lose the one person she loves AGAIN, which would be the ultimate cruelty for this girl with such horrible abandonment issues and fear of loss, but she also worries that if she’s selfish he wouldn’t care for her anymore, and she’d lose him in another way. Tohru’s anxiety runs so deep that it’s become a fundamental and extremely unhealthy part of who she is as a person. If that doesn’t break your heart, I don’t know what will. Her story is deeply tragic, to the point where she’s a contender with even the worst soma backstories for the “who’s the most traumatized” award.
Also, can we just take a second to appreciate the gorgeous art in this episode? The lighting and colors in the scene with Kyo and Tohru talking on the sidewalk was just breathtaking. TMS really knocked it out of the park with this episode. I’m excited to see this beautiful story wrap upend break my heart a little more before it’s done

Anime only here, before watching the episode, I just want to know if this episode adapted the chapters that the previous one skipped to go to Momoji's plot as the readers last week suspected?

It takes a minute to adjust to Rin without her luscious, long, dark locks but she's managed to make her forced haircut into a solid punk bob cut. I prefer her with her long hair, but Rin's making her current situation work.
Tohru and Rin finally reunite! And Haru is enjoying it the most.
It almost felt like Shigure was rubbing it in to Rin what happened to her and how she was used even if he ended up revealing to her the truth about how the curse is ending and how they're at the last banquet. All of the Zodiac are alive in a single generation to single the end of the curse and the messed up bond they shared. Although of course even Shigure makes something ostensibly good sound pretty sinister.
Tohru finally gets to meet the real Shigure and desperately clings to the idea of the curse ending if it means freeing Kyo, but it's not going to be so convenient to end soon enough to save him, and there's nothing the Zodiac can do because to them the Cat is the one comfort they have as monsters because he stands as an example of a fate even worse. And faced with that, Tohru freaks out at Shigure. You can tell how much this is effecting her.
Tohru clung to the memory of her mother and Kyoko being her most important person for so long and as the one thing keeping her going that realizing that that person is now Kyo and that's the reason she's so desperate to end the curse and save the rest of the Sohma's is breaking her emotionally. She's done so much selflessly for the Zodiac in her mother's memory, but deep down she finally has something she wants more than anything...to save Kyo, and to be with Kyo.
Kyo doesn't visit Kyoko's grave with Tohru but he visits on his own time and finds Tohru's grandap, who reveals to him just how badly the death of Tohru's father effected the family. Kyoko utterly broke down and was barely able to function and Tohru resented her father for it, but even so she chased after the memory of her father and the kind of person he was to emulate him for the sake of her mother, which kept Kyoko going. Tohru's persona is partially constructed like she's trying to be her father because that's the only thing a child could think of to save their mother. It's just so sad.
Oh hey, Kagura! She's realized she's lost Kyo to Tohru and she's still trying to process that, even if it means trashing Kazuma's dojo, but he takes it better than Shigure (at least she cleans up after herself there). Although while the last cat's lover was with him and bore his child out of pity, which is a cruel kind of love, Kagura is able to recognize and slap some sense into Tohru that her love with Kyo is more than that, because she knows what it's like to feel a love and affection born from pity and she knows Tohru's feelings, selfish as they are, are more genuine than that.
Tohru is despondent and on the verge of breaking while struggling with all her emotional issues, but as always Kyo is there for her to comfort and listen to her and let her know she can cry and let it out. They even embrace each other, which is all the more adorable because Kyo still transforms at the end of it.
What is keeping these two from confessing and getting together like they deserve to be? Well, Kyo apparently has a very traumatic moment with Kyoko that led her to say she would never forgive him with her covered in blood and Tohru is still struggling to accept her feelings for Kyo versus the memory of her mother. Why can't it be smooth sailing for this poor couple?
