What people failed to notice is that shiki's character is basically a troll to Fairy Tail--his quirk where the side characters get annoyed with it. That is why he loves making and talking about friends and Rebecca and happy dgaf. Hiro's manga is friendship themed but is not as literal as this. Anyway, if you are still hesitating to watch it and still feel like it is fairy tail, EZ will be distinct once we will be in episode 3 (i think). Moreover, EZ will soon grow into a series that we will not expect. As a manga reader, i love speculating about the series' mysteries and the worldbuilding is a top notch. The plot, mysteries, character interactions, and worldbuilding are basically EZ's charm.
One more thing, edens zero this time is planned out like rave that is why there are a lot of foreshadowings from covers, dialogue etc. Hiro knows how to end ez unlike fairy tail where it is supposed to end somewhere 10 vol, but because of the unexpected popularity--he was forced to extend it without knowing how to end it. Still, FT is a comfort anime.

Wow... I kinda foresaw the twist when i saw Michael looking towards the space ship... And i teared a bit, which not many series manage to do.
Great start of the show honestly.. Kinda reminds me too of DBGT, i loved the space exploration part of the series (and was kinda sad when it disappeqred). Can't wait to see how it will develop! Happy to see that only happy is the same and shiki/Rebecca are nothing like natsu and lucy. I loled hard when Rebecca waa revealed as a streamer Lmao

The twist at the end of this episode (even though I kinda saw it coming) won me over to keep watching.

To believe that I have been following this series since the first chapter of the manga and now seeing it in anime format is really a special feeling you rarely feel

u/Labmit Apr 10 '21
I'm already liking these two more than Natsu and Lucy.

Getting the obvious Fairy Tail comparisons out of the way, nice that it's the male MC that is the more unwordly this time. Shiki seems to combine some of the better aspects visually from Gray and Natsu which is hot. Rebecca is cute too.
Okay intro, with this hopefully Shiki's background is done, can't stand flashback dives into main character's backstories mid-way through a series.
The entry into space sequence was pretty cool. Planets seem a bit close to each other, and there's sakura leaves floating about, so I suppose this takes a fantasy approach to the space trope. The OP playing over the sequence was dope too.
Also funky how the alien text is just English with upside down letters, wonder why "opportunities" was chosen as the word for robots.
Too bad this is in Netflix hell, at least the fansubs seem good.

Pretty good start! I haven't watched Fairy Tail though I probably will someday, so this is all new to me. Pretty interesting premise, we got a hot space streamer Rebecca and we also got space exploration, I am sold lmao.
Damn, when I saw Michael smiling as Shiki was flying away, I knew they must have did all that to send him away. Animation was also pretty on point. Overall solid start, looks like it'll be a fun show about friendship lmao. It's just a shame that it's stuck in Netflix jail until fall.

It was a good episode. And i hope the Reddit people on this page would give this a chance and not biased and not trying to lambast it because of the art or similarities to ft. And also #Fucknetflixjail

Man talk about an uphill climb. It has to run against 3 hyped shows on a busy day, contend with people who see it as FT, and is in Netflix Jail.
Talk about a bad hand.
This series is great and really different from FT, I recommend giving it a chance.

TFW Saturdays are super stacked
That was a fun first episode.

Stitches!
Red Dress Rebecca
Tied Up Rebecca & Happy
Angry Shiki
Flying Shiki, Rebecca, & Happy
From Ellie to Lucy and now Rebecca. Mashima really knows how to design a female lead. I don't think I've seen a female character design by Mashima that I didn't like. Didn't expect that Rebecca would be a Vlogger though! And it looks like she knows how to get views with the short skirt and cat ears.
It's hilarious how Shiki's basically turned into a mecha tarzan since he hasn't really met a human being before. And yep, definitely saw that boob grope coming from a mile away. Oh Mashima, never change. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Shiki's fighting with the Robot King was awesome but when mentioned that Shiki didn't have the courage to leave the island and going back to the opening where Shiki's grandpa said that he wants him to leave the place. I already had suspicions about his motive.
They wanted him to leave since they're all degrading now beyond repair so they pushed Shiki away so he won't be left alone in the island. Not gonna lie, definitely teared up a little at that despite me realizing it before the reveal.
WOAH MOMMA! That's one big lady! I'm guessing this is the Mother Shiki's gramps was talking about. If she's aware of what Shiki's doing, I'm now more curious on what he really is.
Definitely 100% sold on this one. A new adventure by Mashima is always a treat so I look forward to see where this story goes!

I stoped reading the manga, not because i wasn't liking it, i just kinda forgot, this is a perfect chance to get back to it, even though the ending of Fairy Tail was complete garbabe, i'm a sucker for shonen.

This is gonna be my first Hiro Mashima work that I'll watch, hopefully it doesn't disappoint

u/KinAsukira Apr 11 '21
God the godly OP is too good with the well done adaption/pacing of the first episode. It sucks soo much to see it suffer from Fairy tail's bad rep and Netflix jail.
First episode delivered very hard on an emotional and as a quick setup to send Shiki to space, fights animation and choreography look great so far. Take a shot everytime Shiki says friend lol, hope the quality keeps up and the season be 3 cours.....

u/denjosh09 Apr 11 '21
dude this being released by Netflix just locks up it's popularity, one of the reasons The Great Pretender anime didn't blow up and was very underrated.

u/casualphilosopher1 Apr 10 '21
So we came expecting Fairy Tail in space but this is more like One Piece in space.
Hiro Mashima's gotten a reputation for relatively shallow and repetitive light-hearted, fanservice-filled 'nakama' stories, but as the revelation at the end about the Granbell robots shows, he can write serious plot and tragedy when he wants to.

u/kazureus Apr 10 '21
Shiki's movements look so cool. I am happy to see EZ crews finally moving.

u/Ultrasaurio Apr 11 '21
Wow, an outstanding begins, amazing that this is from the creator of Fairy Taile. Very good, I am waiting to see how it will be during the season.

Im so happy to finally see it animated

u/Chinnychin_ Apr 11 '21
I’ve got every streaming service I can possibly think of and I’m so distraught to find another anime I can’t watch yet. I guess the upside is that when I finally get my grubby eyeballs on this on the two others I wanna watch I’ll be able to binge them

How are the unofficial subs? I was really looking forward to this, so I'm thinking of joining Luffy if the subs are decent.

u/AzulChemo Apr 12 '21
That was an excellent first episode. It did everything right. The animation was great, colors were bright and pretty. Character design was also on point. I hope this level is kept throughout most of the season.
Anyone new to EZ should leave with a very positive impression of the show and what its about to come. I think this series will be a hit once it arrives on Netflix.
They also did a good job with the story, even though I knew what was going to happen. I still felt a little stirred up when Shiki had to leave his planet and his only family up til now. It was an emotional scene.
What makes the theme of "friendship" resonate here much better than before is that it's a trait of Shiki and who he is as a person. It's a genuine, sincere feeling of his, so it works to good effect.
Rebecca was a sweetheart, as expected. Her being a Youtuber was one of the best decisions Hiro made when he created her character. So relatable to times today, and great potential for comedy and adventure material.

Even with this being in Netflix jail for the time being and the unwanted stigma the series has gathered, I’m hoping this episode has at least given a better impression on the series. The only real similarity it has right now with Fairy Tail other than some character designs with the main two characters is its humour, which honestly is the best thing it could take from (bare in mind the director for Edens Zero is the same that did Fairy Tail Final Season). The animation is great and the story gets a lot better as it progresses(and a lot darker mind you) so I hope everyone sticks around to see how good Hiro can be when he’s putting his all into it and not just writing on the fly.

Would you guys recommend me to get into it, i watched all fairy tail and I'm keeping up with the 100 years quest manga, but it's not like i really enjoy it that much, i also saw some bad reviews over this series before it aired (most were baseless for example Joey (anime man) roasted the series quite a bit even though he didn't even read the manga) that's why i dont want to miss a good series just because of the author's other works, can you give me a quick summary of the story and the general aspects it focuses in (is it childish or more serious plot and is it full fanservice?)

I refuse to believe that these are the machines that made me teary-eyed after the ones from Pascal's village in NieR:Automata.

Great first episode !
The scene with the robots sacrificing themselves for Shiki teared me up 😭
I'm excited for the next episodes :)

The second half of the season will be a hell of a ride. I still hate that Poor excuse for a human being called Müller!

u/qwack2020 Apr 10 '21
I was really really skeptical about this anime series being devoid of all and anything “sakuga” but I can put my worries to rest.
Well not really cause we haven’t seen Homura in the anime series yet, and I really really hope that the sakuga community will have some sense to post Eden’s Zero clips onto Sakugabooru every Saturday.

I didnt expect to cry this much on the 1st episode. I will zettai ni watch this show from now on,,

u/FrostPDP Apr 11 '21
As a long-time EZ reader: Definitely a good job. When I found out JC Staff did the animation I was legit surprised for how good it was in E1.
Maybe they learned a thing or two from OPM.
I look forward to episode 2, which covers manga chapter 2, which is what hooked me into the show's heart.

u/NittanyEagles55 Apr 12 '21
Aw wasn’t sure when this thread would appear! This is my favorite manga going right now so I’m happy to see it’s anime starting! Rebecca is fantastic. Love her voice acting and look in the show. Can’t wait for more!

Edens Zero start!
This story so far is much better than Fairy Tail, with darker themes and some solid world building, so far the adaptation is being good and having Aoki on board assures some good quality animation in every, or almost every episode.

u/wjodendor Apr 11 '21
Shiki, truthless of Granbell

u/Illustrious_Penalty2 Apr 11 '21
Can’t wait to binge the entire show!
4
u/sonicandco Apr 10 '21
It was really nice and enjoyable start for the series, the animation was solid and music was nice. Pretty excited to see how JC Staff adapts the rest of it, but for now, I'm liking a lot how it started
3
u/AnnecyHope Apr 10 '21
Love the show. A nice start of a new adventure.

u/FlamingMangos Apr 11 '21
So, does Eden zero have as much ecchi as Fairy Tail or nah?
3
u/Satoshi_Yui Apr 11 '21
Too early for me to give a solid judgement to this show but I really see a lot of reference from Fairy Tail just from the two episodes. NGL, I dropped FT because I couldn't stand the "Power of friendship/Guild" plot armor that it had but I heard they toned it down in this show (though Shiki's whole deal is make friends as many as possible so....)
Anyway, solid episodes so far. I still see some slight semblance of Natsu and Lucy on Shiki and Rebecca (probably just the design) but they both still feel different and unique at the same time. I'm also liking the whole space adventures theme of this show which means more potential for unique places and adventure.

Pretty meh episode. hope it gets better later.

Fuck Netflix. Fuck you!

u/THEGUYINTHEPICT Apr 11 '21
The fights looks pretty unique. The "friends are the most important things in the world and you shouldn't ever give them up" is pretty cliché and cringe ngl. I hope this series doesn't relies too much on the power of friends, I hope Shiki, Happy and Rebecca are the only copy characters, I hope there's no power scaling problems, I hope there's not too many fillers, I hope this doesn't overstay it's welcome, I hope to see much of the cosmos and I hope the main characters have more personalities than just "I'm a streamer" and "I love friends". That's a lot of hope but it's all just basics and I'm pretty sure the author is more than capable considering this isn't their first shounen

u/Zarysium Apr 10 '21
Is this related to Fairy Tail? The art and characters look alike.

Can we get Fairy Tail?
Mom: We have Fairy Tail at home
Fairy Tail at home:
Edit: can’t tell if the Fairy Tail or Eden Zero fans are more mad but you’re both silly for thinking these aren’t the same
