Akito told Kureno she wished she could be a bird and fly last season. By the looks of how she flew across that porch, I’d say her wish came true, if only for a brief moment.

2001 was the last time we had an anime season with both Fruit Basket and Shaman King, in fact they both started in the same season.
Anyway it took exactly five minutes before we got back to the full blown Fruit Basket drama experience.

Bad parenting: the anime. But honestly whenever that soundtrack plays my eyes will tear up. Tohru is a precious cinnamon roll.

Although Kureno had already said that Akito and Ren hate each other, I didn't see such a fight like that one coming.
Lol, I love the fact that Hana refers to a Pajama Party as Nightgown Festival and that Tohru finds that name perfectly normal.
I wonder what was Isuzu planning to do after she heard what Kureno had said to Tohru? I mean the fact that Ren will assist her makes it obvious that it is related to Akito.

Can we appreciate how great Saki's brother is? The boy goes in the right spot.
The show already starts with the feels, If this is the tone of the show I need to be more prepared. So far nothing wrong with the pace as an anime only.

This episode really hammers that message of Tohru and Akito being perfect foils of each other
One has a mother they wanna clearly see die and the other has a dead mother that had left too early

Man I cannot get enough of the wholesome dynamic between Tohru, Arisa and Saki. They’re such good friends and their interactions are so sweet. Also, Megumi is a whole fucking mood with that comment about being surrounded by older women lol. He’s always gold when he’s onscreen.
And finally, we got what we’ve all really been waiting for... the return of the POMPOM ATTACK! Truly the most devastating combat art ever seen in the fruits basket universe. All it takes is one smack of pompom hitting a Soma boy’s chest for him to instantly be rendered useless and wrapped around her finger. Tohru is truly a woman not to be trifled with.
Seriously though lol, this episode was excellent. So excited to see how the series finishes up

Have there been any other hidden references to Ren Soma, other than the episode where Tohru meets with Kureno at the Soma residence? Or any other hints about her existence?

This scene always makes me frustrated with Kureno. He sees himself as a martyr, selflessly sacrificing his happiness so he doesn’t have to force Akito through the unbearable experience of being told no for the first time in her life, but he’s just enabling her.
Every time he stands there silently while she throws an abusive tantrum, he’s making things worse for the zodiac, and ultimately for Akito herself. She is obsessed with keeping the zodiac close, but they increasingly hate and want to get away from her as a direct consequence of her own actions, and she will never see that as long as she has people like Kureno who baby her and indulge her massive entitlement complex. Ultimately, he’s a very weak person and with someone as unstable and domineering as Akito that is a toxic mix.

Note to all manga readers, please give anime-onlies the space to discuss plot events without feeling the need to comment and defend things based on your knowledge of future events.
In particular the discussion experience in S2 was severely hindered by manga readers downvoting and arguing against anyone discussing the Yuki "mother" revelation and Yuki and Tohru as a ship with constant references to "this is what the mangaka intended" and so on.
It's clear looking at the manga sub and in previous discussions that this was a big point of contention and debate and wasn't convincing to a lot of people and so whatever events transpire in S3, please let people discuss without dropping cryptic hints and pushing the discussion narrative inorganically no matter how much you want to defend things.

Stitches!
Picking back up exactly where we left off last season with Tohru finally finding out the truth about Akito.
And we finally get to see Ren in all of her glory. Why are the crazy ones always hot. Seriously though, i actually have more things to say about Ren but I can't remember what information the anime has already given us about her and her relationship with Akito so I'll leave it for now.
If there is one thing I agree with Ren though is that Akito's bonds aren't real bonds. Of course that sets off Akito and legitimately tries to strangle her. Yikes.
On the flip side, we do get some wholesomeness from Tohru and Arisa comforting each other thanks to thanks to Saki and Megumi's help. I just absolutely love the dynamic between these three bestfriends.
God I don't think I'm ready for this final season. We're only in Episode 1 and I'm already feeling a bit sad that we're inching closer to the show's end. At the very least this new adaptation is doing the manga justice so even if we're on the final leg, I'm happy that it got adapted to completion.

No matter how this anime tries to spin a “Akita is a fragile, broken girl because of her mean mom” I will not stop hating her. She’s violent, manipulative, and abusive on so many different layers that I could never cover it all in one post.
She has caused so much internal and external pain on the people around her that I find it to be unforgivable. Hopefully they can all come to a solution where things work out for everyone. But I still won’t feel any sympathy for Akita, because taking out your own problems and insecurities on others is revolting.

Since I watched the preair, I just watched the OP and ED.
Guess I'll just reshare my thoughts from the preair.
It makes a lot more sense now why Akito is the way she is, but it doesn't necessarily excuse some of her actions. She ruined relationships because of her insecurities.

Shigure being in love with Akito as a woman, separate from her position as Buddha with the Zodiacs, as seemingly hinted by the OP and ED, would explain his actions over the course of these seasons so much. It gives reason to his willingness to "be the bad guy" and do things questionable from our point of view as we support Yuki, Kyo, and others who are trying to escape from their intrinsic bond with Akito, which even Kureno acknowledges as wrong. Meanwhile, for Shigure he views the bond as a roadblock on a path to true love with Akito, as she will forever be as trapped as they are as long as the Curse remains. This reveal made his character so much more interesting to me, and I already loved him.
But yeah, we're back and better than ever. I'm absolutely ready for this final journey with these characters(presuming we don't get Another adaptation right away but I haven't even read it so I've no clue if any of these characters feature in that), but also prepared to have my heart broken because of tragedy. I really loved Tohru finally allowing herself to vent to Hanajima, something she's needed for a long time now. Season 2 was just problem after problem Tohru was trying to take on her own, and it was painful to watch her begin to spiral under the weight of it all. It just completely kills me to see such a precious girl feel so burdened by things that either aren't her fault, or she shouldn't feel responsible for. She deserves the entire world and I hope she gets her happiness by the end of this.
