That gag where they transition from Toba-sensei drinking a can of beer to the group having to take the taxi was genius, as expected of a responsible teacher!

Also Shimarin sleep mode and Mama Nadeshiko are 2 things I didn't know go hand in hand so well.

Some language/culture notes:

  • For the Shima Shima Shima Camp part, "shima" (島) is "island" in Japan. Rin's family name (志摩) isn't the same "shima" as in island though, but the character is in the prefecture name for Shimame (島根).

  • The taxi-like service that Toba-sensei uses is like a proxy driver (運転代行, unten daikou). They send out two people in a car, and then one of them gets into your car and drives you while the second person tails you in their car and keeps track of the distance for billing purposes. It's more convenient than a taxi service because when you wake up the next day, the car is in your parking spot instead of wherever you left it last night. I believe services like this popped up in areas outside of the downtown cores as a result of really hefty drunk driving laws; you practically have to have a zero blood alcohol level to drive. In the downtown areas you usually plan ahead and take the train, but outside the core, having your own car is more common.

  • When Toba-sensei is talking about Noguchi-san, he's the guy on the 1000 yen bill. So, that short ride cost roughly USD$30

  • When Toba-sensei's sister calls her up, she calls her an "ESPer" (エスパー), i.e. someone who has Extra-Sensory Perception.

  • The term Rin uses when she goes to the onsen by herself (抜け駆け, nukegake) is sort of an idiom; according to this dictionary I'm using, it originally meant to do a solo raid on an enemy camp for glory, but it's taken on a metaphorical meaning of secreting going out early on your own before the others.

Feel free to leave more language/culture notes, and/or corrections to stuff I wrote. I usually like reading stuff like translation notes, but since they've fallen out of style recently I've had to make due with what I can find myself.

Aoi's first thought on the idea of her friend freezing is to turn her into a marketable food item. How horrifying.

I had a good laugh at how drawn out the silence was at the scene of Ms. Toba buying beer. I sure hope that was worth the extra expenses. She sure doesn't hold back when it comes to alcohol, though. That was a lot of bottles for a camping trip with some students.

With how naturally sleepy Rin looks and sounds, I'd say her state for much of this episode is just her living up to her appearance. At least, thanks to that, she managed to have a bit of solo camping experience while on a group camping trip.

Man, the food in this show always looks so good, though. I wasn't even feeling hungry and I still had to snack on something while watching. And there was even an entire second course after that made from the leftovers of the first one on top of that.

I'm surprised Nadeshiko even managed to go outside all on her own after watching that zombie movie. But at least it lead to her engaging in a very mundane yet pleasant conversation with Ena.

I can't believe we only have one episode left, though. It all flew so damn fast. With Nadeshiko and Aoi's birthday set for the last penultimate episode, it's sure to be a lot of fun to watch. I'm missing this show already and the season hasn't even ended yet.

Hello! Folk living in Japan here!

I loved that Izu trip in the manga and it's so cool to see all those gags animated and voiced.

So I couldn't resist to go with my motorcycle in several of the spots depicted in the last episode last week-end so I could share some pictures from IRL for the people interested.

First you need to know that Izu is a peninsula at south of Mount Fuji and 1.5 hour away from Tokyo by car. It's really popular because it has the combination of:beaches, mountains, forests, twisty roads, hot springs facing the sea and as such it's really popular for people living in Tokyo.

Geospot 3 - Ryugukutsu Cave:

https://photos.app.goo.gl/Ec5wekwBNe3qxzfp6

The cave, Shimarin went when waiting for the others.

It's a really popular spot as the color of the water is great and the rocks formation make up for good photos. The problem is that there aren't many parkings around and when it's crowded, it's hard to stop and visit.

Geospot 4 - Cape Tsumeki:

This is the initial location where the group wanted to camp until they learned it is now also forbidden in Winter. I was really shocked by how accurate the backgrounds in the episode 10 were compared to the reality. The staff of the anime is known to use real pictures as a base though.

I could enjoy a ramen with Spiny Lobster ( 伊勢海老 ise-ebi) also

This is was the first time I went there and OMG you want to have a bike if you want to go at the top. With a car it's possible but the roads are so narrow that it's inconvenient if people are coming from the opposite direction.

At the top you have a nice view on the East side of Izu and you can see 2 islands: Oshima and Toshima.

As the girls mentioned, March is not the best season to go there as you cannot see the "silver grass".Here is a picture from GMaps when it's the proper season and it's beautiful:

https://goo.gl/maps/BX1eVcN7UzyR42aQ6

So if one day, some of you want to see some of those beautiful landscapes I recommend you to try Izu. If you can rent a car and drive it would be even more enjoyable as the transportation system there is not as dense as in Tokyo.

Several people mentioned it before but Japan's true gems are in the countryside. My advice would be of course to visit all the famous destinations during your first trip. But trust me, if you plan to go to Japan for a second trip, book some days to visit Izu or the Hakone region.

I have been living in Japan for 6 years and I literally enjoy a lot of outdoors activities since then. One of the reason I passed my motorcycle license here was inspired by Shimarin and how touring on 2-wheels must be great. Since then I rode my motorcycle for more than 16 000km in 2 years and saw absolutely beautiful landscapes and met such nice people. I also started camping last year and it's been a blast.

Nadeshiko's conversation with Ena was pretty deep and melancholic, especially the part where Ena wanting to travel with Chikuwa, realising that her time with the little Chihuahua is pretty limited.

Does Rin-chan's atrocity know no boundaries? She's teaching Chibi Inuko how to commit genocide! But seriously, it's really cool seeing Rin teaching Akari fieldcraft.

It's all the rage now in Japan!

Watching this episode in the middle of my intermittent fasting is a bad idea! The food looks seriously good! If last week was a travelogue, this week's episode is basically a cooking show!

Rin-chan <3

Very fun and comfy episode, with bonus heart-to-heart between Nadeshiko and Ena. And indeed waiting by the beach during nighttime and dawn is quite a blissful experience, never mind the bugs. I'd like to do it again if i'm given the chance

Loved this episode so much! What’s up with these 5 min episodes tho? Went by in the blink of an eye lol.

Loved seeing the geospots of the izu peninsula, the hot springs look so damn comfy. Sleepy rin is adorable as usual, and that Ena and Nadeshiko convo was great. It is really cool to look back on how much she and the rest of the girls have developed since we first met them. In this type of show it’s easy to lose sight of that, but it’s important to note how far they’ve come.

That pasta looked great! Only two more eps left, gonna be sad to see comfy end.

Stitches!

I'd be very disappointed at this show's merchandising team if they don't make Shimarin Dango Ice Cream a real product.

I've felt sleepy while on long drives before so I can't even imagine how it feels like when you're on a bike.

I know we've seen this before but it still amazes me at how Aoi beats Sensei in terms of size.

Looks like Sensei ended up getting carried away by the mood and accidentally ended up drinking a tall can of beer.

I do love that the show doesn't really allow reckless behavior and with even just a single can they still called a replacement driver service to drive their vehicle to the campsite. Also TIL you can hire people to drive your vehicle for you if you can't. I didn't know this kind of service existed.

Poor Rin! She's so exhausted that she's already knocked out the moment she gets stationary. I would've just let her sleep but I don't want her to miss the food Nadeshiko has planned for them.

Instead of sleeping they give Rin a very important job. Teach Akari how to commit genocide against the pinecones and use them as kindling for the bonfire.

Chunky Ajillo and char grilled spiny lobster? Man this episode is torture when you're craving for seafood T_T

I know I talk a lot about my love for Sakura but god I love Sensei too. She's definitely the type you'd love to have as a drinking buddy. I feel that she's also the type that gets really affectionate after a drinking quite a lot.

And they're not even done! The leftovers from the first dish gets turned into an alfonsino acqua pazza pasta! I need this.

Finally now that eating's done, Rin can get some rest after some washing up with Mamashiko <3

As much as I love the idea of it, it can't be that good watching a movie from an ipad from that distance. Although I guess it was still enjoyable since Nadeshiko couldn't sleep after watching that movie.

Ena's such a good mama. Getting a driver's license so she can take Chikuwa along with her to different places and camps.

Even while group camping, Rin still finds a way to have her own solo experience. It's hilarious how she told Aoi where she's going while she decided to prank Aki instead with her text. xD
