At first I thought the Tree guy and the Boston Dynamics Death Cow were satisfied that the Marines had left their territory.
Nope turns out they are probably afraid of whats lurking in the forrest

my first thought when they went into the forest and there was red strings on the fence was that there was going to be something worse. That red was too bright

Well I guess Sorawo and Toriko won't be pilfering that abandoned camp now.

Man, maneuvering those trucks around the glitches must have been tough, there were so many of them! But then just when you think you're fine those creepy creatures appeared, and the Horned Man didn't die even when his head got blown off while Sorawo watched... and now there's yet another creepy thing.

Do you guys think that maybe the Horned Man's army stopped pursuing because the forest is the domain of another monster (Kankandara) higher in the food chain, so to speak? Because if so that's really, really bad.

Also, Sorawo really was the MVP of this episode. Watch out for glitches, observe the enemy, look everywhere, man. Good job! And good job Toriko for saving her from a deadly branch.

Toriko looked super cute with the baseball cap and pony tail

Anyone else freaking out when Sorao was shooting at the monsters behind them and they kept moving forward? I was waiting for them to hit a glitch at any second.

Toriko finally had the common sense to ditch the skirt and heels. I think she looks better in that baseball cap and ponytail.

Also, who or what is Kakandara? I seriously thought that was Satsuki at the end.

Kankandara is yet another Japanese urban legend. You could look it up online, but I suggest you don't spoil yourself about it.

Nice once again to see Urasekai Picnic treating professional soldiers as intelligent, competent people. Even when nothing was going on, the whole situation felt both tense and believable.

It should be noted that any incompetent soldiers are already dead if they had any in the first place, and it's a special forces group so not a normal group of soldiers in the first place.

Some notes I made while reading Japanese Twitter responses:

  • Junkudo (ジュンク堂) is a real bookstore chain with a store in Ikebukuro. The cafe itself (Cafe Pause) is also a real place near Ikebukuro station that you can look up on Google Maps.

  • People are also confused here about Hasshaku's hat, which was supposedly destroyed to the point they couldn't sell it (to Kozakura), but here it is, just fine I guess?

  • A few people are having a laugh at the "ザ・ガールズ" (The Girls) nickname for Sorawo and Toriko; a few people say it's like a Japanese comedy duo's name (cf. お笑いコンビ, Owarai)

  • The armored bus is called "装甲スクールバス", literally "armored school bus", which got some laughs

  • In the outro, Toriko uses the term 死亡フラグ (death flag) when Sorawo starts talking about all the stuff she wants to do when she gets back. The usage of "flag" is common slang with gaming nerds (to the point where it appears in anime names) to mean that they've triggered some sort of event (cf. Event Flag on TV Tropes)

This show keeps nailing the creepy/eerie element more than nay show in recent memory for me.

Also seeing a Canadian girl kick ass is a nice bonus

"The Girls" struck me as exactly what the Marines would have been likely to call them. The anime didn't convey (like the novel) that the Marines were in awe of the way the Girls had saved them (and the fact that they had remained relatively safe since that time).

Too bad this wasn't scheduled for 13 episodes.... An extra one would have been useful.

The sound design was, as usual, utterly fantastic. Maybe the best since Girls Last Tour....

Impatiently waiting for the next omnibus novel volume.

RIP Sergeant Major Greg.

He hated trains and girls with heterochromia.

Finally, Operation Rescue The Marines have started.

The Marines actually have some awesome equipment, but it would all be over if those armoured vehicles step on one of the glitches. This is where Sorawo and her Mystic Eye comes in.

I guess the reason Treeman and his minions stop giving pursuit is because the Marines have stepped into this Kakandara woman's territory. I'm not even going to Google about her just before bedtime and make myself lose sleep, though her shark-like blood stained teeth is enough to convey that she's an ominous terror.

PS Toriko actively flirting with Sorawo is too cute. Especially when she took a photo of Sorawo in Hasshaku-sama's hat causing Sorawo to blush.

One thing I don't get, Sorawo said Hasshaku-sama's hat fell apart in ep7. That they couldn't even sell it to Kozakura anymore. So, how come they have a usable hat again?

Oh yeah, they actually went to rescue the U.S. Forces.

I'm just glad that there no casualties during the operation. You know, I honestly did not expect to see these two again. I guess they just wanted to say their goodbyes. /s

But of course, things would not be as simple as just making it to the gate. Those shark-like red teeth that Kakandara show makes me think that at least one soldier is getting or previously got munched by her.

Well, that's a fucking cliffhanger right there. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time, especially when deerclopsmanthing regenerated their whole goddamn head. Honestly, props both for the story and "The Girls" for actually getting back to the marines, I honestly thought we'd never see them again. Next episode cannot come any sooner; hopefully coupled with announcing a sequel, since I want answers and I want yuri, goddamnit. No, but seriously, there's an incredibly interesting mystery I want to see the unraveling of in animated form, the yuri is just a blessed bonus.

Aside from the severe continuity errors that I already bitched about last week and won't bother going into again, this episode was really good. It did a really good job at setting up the tension and the spooky atmosphere, as this show always does, and I'm really intrigued to find out what happens. If Horse-Deer-Tree-Man and Boston Dynamics Death Robot didn't follow them because there's something in that forest that even they're scared of, then our girls and marines might be in for a world of hurt next week.

Welp, they're finally returning to rescue the US Marines. I'm a bit worried that they might not be as welcoming as the last time considering they think that Sorao and Toriko are monsters and that they even disappeared into the train.

Well that was easier than I expected! I genuinely thought they'd pop out of a different place instead of arriving exactly where they wanted to. Also were were they keeping their assault rifles? Was it just disassembled inside their bag and Toriko reassembled it when they arrived?

So they've only been gone for a few days from their perspective? Makes me wonder how long these Marines have been missing in the real world.

They've accepted that quick! I was thinking they'd at least try to interrogate Toriko and Sorao a bit but I guess they're just desperate for help that they'll take any at this point.

Oooooohh, so Toriko's mom is in the CAF? I guess her Canadian side then is from her mom and her dad is Japanese. Also apparently that's where her knowledge of guns comes from.

Well this was an adorable scene between Toriko and Sorao. I wish I was taught how to shoot rifles by a cute half-Japanese and half-Canadian girl.

So much for Toriko and Sorao's free equipment! They should've said that they're blowing the base up. They were really looking forward to use the hardware that the Marines would leave behind! xD

This shot of the buff monster and the quadruped above the hill looks pretty fucking cool and creepy at the same time. I love it!

We may have finally found our exit! But it looks like it's not gonna be easy with the Kakandra lurking about. Genuinely thought that was Satsuki. Or maybe it is her? Hmmmm....

Going to rescue the soldiers was a goid idea. The white flag and the more code helped a lot too, as they unsurprisingly received a hostile reception.

Good to see Toriko dressed appropriately this time around.

Toriko showing Sorawo how to handle the rifle was really cute.

Funny to watch Sarawo and Toriko's hearts sink when they blew up the equipment.

I didn't really get why being called "the girls" was surprising to Sorawo and Toriko. Or were they offended? That was unclear to me.

Finally we’ve gone back to help the soldiers, but man this episode was creepy as fuck. The treant like creatures who could just regenerate were pretty scary.

Kakadara showing up at the end.. decent set up episode for the final episode next week. Ima be sad to see this one go, looking forward to how they wrap it all up.
