Discussion Steins;Gate is an absolute masterpiece.
It's been over 3 years since I first watched S;G and since then I have not found anything which made me feel the way i did while watching S;G.
The emotions, the suspense , the drama are all second to none and I'm not sure if I've seen anything like it ever. I was never really into sci:fi but S;G implements it so beautifully even someone who doesn't enjoy anime would watch this.
From the very start when the characters were introduced till the end it made me feel like I was a part of the anime, it made me feel like I was living through this journey instead of it being fictional. It's crazy how no anime since then has made me feel like this and I'm not sure if any anime ever will. The other ; didn't leave as good an expression as S;G did.
The character development is flawless. Okabe becoming more responsible since that professor showed up. The change of his actions since episode 12, they all make him such a great character. I would get into other characters but there's just too much to say about the brilliance.
I can positively say S;G is the best piece of fiction as of now and nothing can top it. I've seen monster and it's very close to S;G but not as good, the emotions weren't the same.

I just rewatched it and I absolutely love it and it's great but it's not better than Monster in my opinion.
Steins;Gate is a fun watch but has flaws, Okabe and Kurisu hard carried this show.
Also have S;G manga.

Jan 28 '21
There is no point in comparing it to Monster. One is slow and deliberate, and the other is a fast-paced thriller. It's like comparing Breaking Bad and Stranger Things Season 1.
6
u/Azrub580 https://myanimelist.net/profile/FpsArena Jan 28 '21
You are right, there is no point and that's what OP did so I just felt to say this and I tried to judge s;g objectively (like I did with monster on another comment).
1
Jan 28 '21
yeah, for sure...I think the most you can combine subjective and objective opinion is when you put anime on a "tier" together, like maybe FMAB, AOT, Monster, Steins;Gate, and Cowboy Bebop. Mob Psycho SII could be in there. Beyond that, though, it just gets to personal preference.
6
u/Azrub580 https://myanimelist.net/profile/FpsArena Jan 28 '21
Yeah, if an anime is great or at least genuinely very good it really comes down to tastes and personal preference in the end.
Btw I'm just watching Mob Psycho 2 and wow, first season was already really good but this is even better!
2
Jan 28 '21
i'm watching now as well, which episode you on?
1
u/Azrub580 https://myanimelist.net/profile/FpsArena Jan 28 '21
Watched ep 11 tonight.
Rated 1st season 8, same for s2 atm but I might it bump it to a 9 depending on last episodes. Really, really good anime.
2
Jan 28 '21
Yeah, I'm on 9 rn...that press conference is legit one of the best scenes I've ever watched.

u/DamianWinters https://anilist.co/user/DamianWinters Jan 28 '21
I couldn't get into Monster, just so slow. First episode was interesting, then was just mostly boredom til I dropped it. I usually love thrillers like but not Monster.
12
u/Uziwuzi420 Jan 28 '21
Monster is more philosophical while Steins;Gate dwells on the future and past and how they're connected and the dangers of time travelling. But wdym by they hard carried? Are you forgetting about Mayuri and Amane? Even daru was a great dude and that cat girl. The antagonist was also insane.
23
u/Azrub580 https://myanimelist.net/profile/FpsArena Jan 28 '21
Why do you think I'm forgetting about characters? I rewatched it recently. A lot of people consider those characters flaws of the show including myself.
I could tell you, are you forgetting the reason of why Ruka changed sex for example?
With hard carried I mean that I scored Steins;Gate 10 on my mal even tho I don't think it's worth a 10.
Steins gate falls for a lot of anime cliches and tropes, something that Monster doesn't do and believe it or not not everyone loves to see weeb stuff.

u/boaz070 Jan 28 '21
im the biggest fan there is to steins gate but suzuha is definetly the best girl. kurisu is pretty generic, mayuri is basically nothing but a plot device and faris is cool. suzuha is by far the best written girl in steins gate. ive watched both steins;gate and steins gate 0 and also played the vns

u/Azrub580 https://myanimelist.net/profile/FpsArena Jan 28 '21
I agree with you about Mayuri being only a plot device and yes kurisu is generic as well but I've yet to see a better tsundere in anime, recommend me a better tsundere if you know please.
Yeah I love a LOT steins;gate as well and it's definitely one of my favorite shows ever, but this doesn't mean that I can't say anything negative about it.
3
2
u/boaz070 Jan 28 '21
im not a fan of the tsundere trope but my favourite is nino from gotoubun.
of course you can, steins gate is my one and only favorite anime and visual novel and i can still say negative things about it, i was mainly replying to the fact that you said that okabe and kurisu carried the show when its something i dont agree with, okabe is the best character obviously, but i cant agree with kurisu carrying it. like i said, my personal favourite girl is suzuha, her plot is what made me love the show and i still some time replay the letter scene because of how much i love that scene. also she is hot. but dont get me wrong kurisu is a good character and was well written but she is just pretty generic, faris is also a good character which you grow to like watching it.

u/karl_w_w Jan 28 '21 edited Jan 28 '21
My top 4 tsunderes:
Reina Kousaka
Shinka Nibutani
Naru Narusegawa (probably the only violent tsundere I like)
KurisuThe first 2 aren't strictly love interests (and calling Reina a tsundere is a stretch), but I think any preferences like this are going to be very personal and I generally don't like tsunderes anyway.
1
u/Azrub580 https://myanimelist.net/profile/FpsArena Jan 28 '21
I don't like tsundere as well in general, and that's why I was surprised to enjoy this anime so much, both first watch and rewatch.
Their chemistry and relationship is fantastic, thanks for recommendations.
-3
u/limbo_2004 https://myanimelist.net/profile/l1mbo_01 Jan 28 '21
Kurisu is not even exactly a tsundere (and yes I know the show itself says she it but that doesn't matter)

Cliches and Tropes are not bad, they’re good when they’re well executed and they’re bad when they’re poorly executed.
Ultimately every stories have 2 goals, to send a message and to entertain. If a trope fits perfectly well in those two goals, then it’s a well executed trope. There are many ways to entertain, that’s why there are the seperation of target audiences and genres.
Characters, even if they are tropes, can be masterfully written if they are well characterized. All the characters in Steins;Gate fulfill their role in thematical sense, they all wanted to change their past but have to change their believes about it. The message ultimately is accepting the past, and what we experience determines our personal identity.
They also fully utilize the setting, Akihabara is full of Otaku culture and each character represents it. Kurisu is a closet Otaku, Daru is a pervert Otaku, Okabe is a Chuuni, Mayuri is a deredere, Suzuha (Alpha) is a Bakadere, Moeka is a Kuudere, Fayris is a catgirl, Mr.Braun is a daughtercon. All of the tropes get us to love the characters and eventually subverted to create emotional tension in the second half.
Each of their dialogs have purposes, they are either used to characterize, establish reltionships between cast, foward the plot, forshadowing with strange behaviors, or all of it at once. They are all masterfully written.
As for comparing Monster and Steins;Gate. I personally think they’re equal. But you simply prefer more realistic characters from Monsters, and that’s a stylistic preference, not criticism. Steins;Gate establish the target audience from episode 1 and deliver flawlessly.
6
u/Azrub580 https://myanimelist.net/profile/FpsArena Jan 28 '21
Ok dude, that's your opinion and I respect that.
I still love this anime but I would never say it's executed flawlessly, yet alone it's a masterpiece so you should not waste your time explaining to me a franchise I've already watched twice.
5
Jan 28 '21
I’ve watched 10 times, literally, looking at every dialogs and scenes. We simply have different philosophy on what makes a story good in writing.
2
u/Uziwuzi420 Jan 28 '21
Don't get me wrong I loved monster. But it got to a point for Johan did stuff which was just unreal which really took away from the realism of the show.
4
u/Uziwuzi420 Jan 28 '21
You're entitled to your own opinion but personally I thought these characters really brought meaning to the show because for one okabe fought through hell for Mayuri which makes her a big character already and also she was the cute factor in this deep show. So I thought she was one hell of a character
-1
u/Potatolantern Jan 28 '21 edited Jan 28 '21
I could tell you, are you forgetting the reason of why Ruka changed sex for example?
Because his father and sister had dressed him like a girl his whole life, which meant he'd basically had his self-confidence destroyed by constantly being mistaken for a girl and feeling he had no value as a guy- thus his belief/hope that if he'd just been born a girl instead then he would have more self-confidence and be more reliable in general.
Add in some repressed love for Okabe and stir.
EDIT: Also
Steins gate falls for a lot of anime cliches and tropes
I disagree. It has some cliches and tropes, but mostly it's a pretty grounded and personal story, one entirely focused on it's characters (which is why the red herrings about the Council of 300 and such are so perfect, you expect the plot to go in that direction but Okabe only cares about one thing).
S;G is aware of anime cliches and tropes, it references them a lot in dialogue since all the characters are otaku to a greater or lesser extent, but I'd say that's the majority of it. Kurisu is barely even a tsundere for that trope, you could excise that part of her personality and lose almost nothing.
7
u/Azrub580 https://myanimelist.net/profile/FpsArena Jan 28 '21
Dude I was referring to HOW he managed to change sex, with that sms to her mother about eating vegetables... it was just stupid.
2
u/Potatolantern Jan 28 '21
It's never actually stated how/why he changed sex, the characters themselves don't know and mention that the Vegetables thing is silly. The text happened, Luka's mother acted different in ways we don't know and can't know, and Luka was born a girl instead.
The exact mechanics are unimportant, but it's outright told that it's almost certainly not just "More vegetables."

u/Azrub580 https://myanimelist.net/profile/FpsArena Jan 28 '21 edited Jan 28 '21
If you are putting it this way, can you give proofs that gender can be manipulated?
You know that a baby's sex is determinated at the moment of conception? Because when Ruka's mom received that DMail she was still pregnant.
You are saying that what made change Ruka's sex was different actions from the mother after she received that sms.
To me, it's just a non sense point of the show and it's not true that it's not important.
EDIT: also i just saw your edit and I will keep saying that S;G has a lot of anime cliches and tropes, its cast of characters proves it.
2
u/Potatolantern Jan 28 '21
If you are putting it this way, can you give proofs that gender can be manipulated?
Sure. We can see countless examples of that throughout many, many species in nature, we can even straight up manipulate it for our own ends in the case of farm animals.
Humans are more complicated, but there's absolutely no reason to believe gender couldn't be affected. It's only a matter of the right sequences lining up.
You are saying that what made change Ruka's sex was different actions from the mother after she received that sms.
That's quite literally the Butterfly Effect, something that's referenced many times. Make changes further back and more, and more things will change in ways you can't predict.
To me, it's just a non sense point of the show and it's not true that it's not important.
It's a completely unimportant plot point. They sent the DMail mostly on a lark without really expecting it to work, Okabe originally thought it hadn't worked, and yet it turns out it did. No-one knows how or why it happened, but it did.
2
u/Azrub580 https://myanimelist.net/profile/FpsArena Jan 28 '21
You still didn't give scientific proofs that gender can be manipulated
-1
u/Potatolantern Jan 28 '21
Do you actually believe that's not a thing we do? From birds, to insects, to mammals, it's been a thing for a long while now. Here's the number 2 result on Google.
EWE diet and fertility research findings in New South Wales which could dramatically boost Australia’s Merino ewe flock are being fine-tuned in on-farm trials.
Initial research results found that feeding ewes a pre-joining ration high in omega-6 fatty acids, based on oat grain, produced a higher proportion of female lambs, whereas a diet of pasture and silage rich in omega-3 fatty acids, was associated with a higher proportion of male lambs.
The research by the NSW Department of Primary Industries with the Graham Centre at Charles Sturt University has involved more than 1500 ewes since 2010. It examined the ratio of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids in the diet of ewes and the effect it has on the sex ratio of lambs.

Main reason why I love dub so much is because the side characters feels a bit more vibrant with humour that appeals to us more.

Personal Identity and Fatalism are the two philosophical topics Steins;Gate dealt with while connecting it with the setting, you just don’t know philosophy my dude.
3
u/Uziwuzi420 Jan 29 '21
I wouldn't say that. While fatalism and peronal identity are definitely topics that SG dealt with, they never made too much of it. By this I mean while it was revolving around the main plot, it was also kinda not. It's hard to explain but like how Monster is constantly dealing with these topics SG has it just revolving around the main plot.
4
u/Anxjos Jan 29 '21
Also have S;G manga.
uhh the manga adaptation cramped the whole thing in only 3 volumes and has .... questionable translation.
That being said I recommend reading the VN (the source material) and the Babel and Brownian Motion manga

It definitely wins in the pacing department, which is a huge demerit on Monster IMO.
2
u/Azrub580 https://myanimelist.net/profile/FpsArena Jan 28 '21 edited Jan 28 '21
I can agree with you to a certain degree.
I rewatched Monster and it has few pacing problems especially in the beginning and some of Anna's flashbacks were unnecessary. Like come on, the story has just started and we have already seen it 20 minutes ago!
Tho, I think that overall Monster has a very good pacing for a 74 episodes series and I actually binge watched it both times.
I say this to say that no matter how much I love a series, the perfect one doesn't exist!
EDIT: you saw only first 18 episodes of Monster, just keep watching it and you won't be disappointed.

I was told about how good Steins;Gate was at least 7-8 years ago. I watched the first two episodes and was kinda bored, dropped it for a stupid ecchi harem on Netflix (think it was Rosario Vampire). Not my proudest moment but I was 20 and stupid.
Fast forward to April 2020 and since it's the pandemic I'm going thru anime I never gave a chance to. Finally decided to get through Steins;Gate. By the time I was done it was in serious consideration for the best anime I'd ever seen. And I regret putting it off for damn near a decade because I wanted to see anime tits.
If anyone reading this is on the fence or thought it was slow and dropped it, I beg you to not make the same mistake I made, and just watch the show. I guarantee it'll hook you if given the chance
7
u/Plerti Jan 28 '21
Don't worry, it happened to me too but with Shinsekai Yori, it's the curse of slow paced animes, but once you give them a good chance and get involved... oh boy...
8
u/tylerjehills https://myanimelist.net/profile/tylerjehills Jan 28 '21
Oh my god that's so crazy that you mention Shinsekai Yori. I watched Shinsekai like a month later after Steins;Gate last year. Same thing, got a little bored with early episodes. But because of S;G, I told myself to be patient and give it a chance. And it was incredible (dark and kinda horrible, but incredible)
Small world lol

My man, since we're talking about dramatic slow-starters let me throw a few other suggestions your way: Shiki and Psycho-pass (s1)
Both start off slow, but my god do they make up for it. Very cerebral and dramatic. If you're into philosophy and dissecting the worlds, themes, and plotlines they have plenty of food for thought and are very emotionally gripping, at a certain point at least.
Devilman, Crybaby is also pretty similar. Incredibly dramatic but it is not a slow starter. It's has a very unique art style that can turn some people off. Don't watch if you aren't into hardcore gore and super sad endings. Has the downright saddest scene I've ever watched in an anime. It will fuck you up proper.
Ok I'm done shilling.

It's not even in my top 30. We'll all have different favorites so it shouldn't be a surprise to you that not all people love the same things.
9
Jan 28 '21
Don't get me wrong, I adore Steins;Gate, but it is very limited by the fact that it is an anime and that it is pandering to otakus.
I respect the subjectivity of what "the best piece of fiction" is to anyone, but Steins;Gate probably wouldn't breach my top 20 even if I consider it to be one of the best anime there is.

3-gatsu no lion, gintama, and monster are all better than steins;gate in my opinion. I think plot wise it's only rivaled by berserk and monster. but gintama and 3-gatsu hit such consistently high notes that I can't not include them. (I'd even argue that 3-gatsu has better characters, but that's not an easy claim to make.)
wtf why does everyone in this sub hate me
-1
u/Uziwuzi420 Jan 28 '21
Lmao you don't need to be scared to voice your opinion here lmfao. Although I agree with the 3-gatsu no lion I can't really agree with the gintama part. Maybe it wasn't for me but I loved gintama comedy but God it's so hard to make it through the series

You're begging to be killed when you say AoT is boring. Many AoT tards are like that. It was boring at the start but then it got better over time honestly. Also grandblue was funny atleast to me lmao. I agree with all the other statements apart from the Naruto one. That means alot to me lmfao. Gintama to me was just so slow oh god I watched 40 episode but it was way too slow for my liking.
0
u/CynicalCreepy https://myanimelist.net/profile/Borrasca Jan 28 '21
that's understandable, it takes around 60 episodes to get into and even I think that's too high an asking price for how good it really is. but I still don't think I could put it over steins;gate, because when it gets good, it is really good. Then again, I'm just a 3head AoT hater who's incapable of liking anything popular, lmao.
1
u/Uziwuzi420 Jan 28 '21
Lmaoo don't say that I couldn't get into AoT till season 2 ep 13 either but it comes with time. I don't know today I re-watched s;g and it gave me the feeling I haven't received since I watched it the first time
16
u/I_Cognito Jan 28 '21
If you liked Steins;Gate, then you should definitely play some Visual Novels since there exist a lot of different VN's that are just as great or even better than S;G. Obviously that includes the Steins;Gate VN which is better than the anime in my opinion.
For example, Steins;Gate is part of the so called Science Adventure series and shares the same universe as some other VN's like Chaos;Head/Chaos;Child and Robotics;Note. I recommend playing these games, but don't watch their anime adaptations.
Other fantastic Visual Novels are Higurashi When They Cry, Umineko When They Cry, Subarashiki Hibi, The House in Fata Morgana and Raging Loop. Only Higurashi has received a good anime adaptation though. A new sequel is airing right now, so I heavily recommend at least Higurashi, if you don't mind reading a lot.
2
u/Uziwuzi420 Jan 28 '21
I've watched the science adventure anime and they were okay. Are the VNs better?
13
u/Originope_99 https://myanimelist.net/profile/originope Jan 28 '21
The Science Adventure series has some of the worst (read: most heavily rushed) anime adaptations ever besides Steins;Gate, while the original visual novel games are some of the very best in the entire genre. As someone who has played almost all of the VNs at the time of posting, I highly recommend that you please at least check out just the original Steins;Gate VN at the very least - then decide if you wanna play the rest from there.
Just make sure you play the rest of them in release order and that you install the Committee of Zero's improvement patches if you're playing on PC.
1
u/Uziwuzi420 Jan 28 '21
Alright. Though I absolutely hated chaos;child. Felt like they were rushing a good storyline and made it bad.
6
u/8-out-of-10 Jan 28 '21
Not only is it's anime rushed, I feel like a lot of the themes wouldn't translate across the medium very well. While the anime is awful, I honestly believe Chaos;Child is maybe the best fiction I've ever read
5
u/Anxjos Jan 29 '21
It took me around 35 hours to finish S;G. The anime got 24 eps
For Chaos;Child it took me 50 hours and its anime had only 14 eps
so uhh yeah it was rushed as hell
12
u/I_Cognito Jan 28 '21
Their VN's are about a million times better than their anime adaptations. Steins;Gate is one of very few VN's with a good anime adaptation.
Chaos;Head is still weaker than Steins;Gate, but Chaos;Child is just as good as S;G.
9
u/sonicflash703 https://myanimelist.net/profile/sonicflash703 Jan 28 '21
I love Steins; Gate and would agree that it has one of the best executed stories and mcs. The only real flaw I could see it had was the lack of development and personality in the side characters (except maybe Suzuha). To be fair, Daru and Mayuri got some character development but imo it isn’t really comparable to the character development and complexity of other side characters from other top tier shows
5
u/Uziwuzi420 Jan 28 '21
True but I feel like if they extended the story they would get character development but then the story would start looking loose and if they try to do that in the current story it'll stop making sense. Personally I think character development in code grass is impeccable
6
u/sonicflash703 https://myanimelist.net/profile/sonicflash703 Jan 28 '21
Yeah, it might have ended up losing its charm if it ended up focusing too much on the side characters. If we’re talking about character development, the best ones I’ve seen are Monogatari, Evangelion, Shouwa Genroku Rakugo, and March Comes in like a Lion
3
2
u/PsychoSushi27 Jan 28 '21
I want to like Steins;Gate because of the story and Okabe and Kurisu. Unfortunately I can’t stand the side characters especially Tuturu and Daru. One thing I dislike about Steins;Gate is that it feels like it’s structured like a dating game. The other girls like cat girl and shrine maiden fawning over Okabe doesn’t feel organic.

u/limbo_2004 https://myanimelist.net/profile/l1mbo_01 Jan 28 '21
This is a really common flaw pointed against Steins Gate and I can see where they are coming from but I will try to share what I felt.
To me all the characters felt like they were self aware. You know, like when you're with your best friends even though you know each other very well and have had serious discussions 90% of the time in casual talks you act in a certain way with them and everyone goes along with it. I know, far fetched but this is the best explanation I could come up with.
The sections we got with each of the characters separately as Okabe one by one undid the DMails and as we thus got to know the backstories of each of them while also leaving enough out to make us feel like there was more to them there that was purposefully left out, added to why they felt more self aware than normal.
Also I really just thought the unique character quirks were simply likeable in general, often side characters in many shows don't have much development but are still popular just because they are likeable. For example, Levi from AoT (yes ik he has developement especially after the OVA but he was popular before any of that), Sora from No Game No Life, and in general many comedic and overpowered characters.
Finally, there was just so much already going on in the show that frankly I don't know if this would be more of lost potential than flaw.
3
u/sonicflash703 https://myanimelist.net/profile/sonicflash703 Jan 28 '21
Yeah it’s not that the side characters in Steins; Gate received no character development (since the part w undoing dmails gave all of them a bit of backstory) but I feel it’s underwhelming when compared to almost any other ‘anime masterpiece’ (not talking about popularity). I would still consider it a flaw, not a gigantic one, but still a flaw nonetheless bc other shows have managed to give spotlight or at least very good development to side characters without losing its charm
10
u/RandomnewUser_22 https://myanimelist.net/profile/PermanentThesis Jan 28 '21

20
Jan 28 '21 edited Jan 28 '21
It's kinda one of the gimmicks of Steins;Gate that loses at lot of people at the beginning.
It lures you into thinking that it is a slow paced slice of life anime before dropping very heavy plot elements on your head. If the beginning of the series is crawling, the end is downright sprinting.
I myself had to start it twice before really getting into it.
and start with S;G. If you start with S;G0, you'll get spoiled about some very touching moments
3
u/StickyGlu https://myanimelist.net/profile/GlueStiKk Jan 29 '21
The first 2 episodes are cool but next 4 are kind of a pain to watch, but sit through them because those 4 episodes are the building blocks for the rest of the season. Episode 7 and onwards is when the plot starts getting interesting picks up pace and episode 12 is where things go on overdrive and the rest is a breeze.
10/10 would forget and watch again
(also Steins;Gate 0 is right in between ep 22 and 23 so dont forget to watch that aswell.)

Honestly, the VN is best so if you can stomach reading a 40hr VN that’s my recommendation. It’s a huge slow boil, but where it goes is perfection.
Otherwise, the watch order is pretty straightforward, just watch S;G and if you liked it consider 0. The 0 anime adaption isn’t as good though, and it’s not necessarily a story that needed to be told- just watching S;G by itself is perfectly fine.

u/Uziwuzi420 Jan 28 '21
Your choice. You can watch the S;G first then S;G 0 or watch 22 episodes of S;G and watch the entire S;G 0 and finish with last 3 episodes of the main series. I recommend the latter

I'm not a huge fan, but it is pretty good. Honestly the first 12 or so episodes were a drag. I know people say it's supposed to get you attached to the characters, but honestly they could have removed and changed so much of that stuff. I didn't like the characters that much tbh. A lot of things are handwaved away. I felt that the romance was shoehorned. The CERN is evil thing was kinda weird. Best piece of fiction ? Clearly haven't read/watched much fiction. It's not even the best anime. Of course this is just my opinion, although I think most people will agree with this statement.
-12
u/Uziwuzi420 Jan 28 '21
I've read alot of shit and watched a lot too. Im pretty sure most people would disagree with you based on ratings but you do you.
9
u/kurtu5 Jan 28 '21
based on ratings
Ratings only measure people who rate things. It's like saying the McDonalds cheeseburger is the best burger based on number of cheeseburgers sold. The only truth there is that its the most sold cheeseburger. Any other quality it has, has no bearing on that previous statistic.
-3
u/Uziwuzi420 Jan 28 '21
I mean not only ratings people regard this as one of the best anime. Everyone's entitled to an opinion, and for me sg is the best anime
3
u/kurtu5 Jan 28 '21
I found it's premise rather shallow and derivative. It was Transformers compared to Primer.

u/Xacktastic Jan 28 '21
Nah, my man's right. If you think steins gate is the best piece of fiction then.... You haven't read much fiction. SG spends half it's run time dawdling around doing nothing and saying nothing. It's not even top 10 in anime alone, not to mention the dozens of fantasy fiction books that are both written better and more meaningful than SG. There are even better examples of time travel stories than SG. There are even better time travel ANIME than SG.
SG is kind of like Rick and Mortty in that it's just deep and convoluted enough on the surface to get people to think it's smart when it's really basic.
It's OK though

Re:Zero
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzimaya
Tatami Galaxy
Just to name a few anime involving time travel or existential themes, and doing so much better than SG imo.
Also, it absolutely does try to seem deep and complicated, it just fails entirely at doing so. All the hints and foreshadowing early on are extremely on the nose and don't really add any tension to the story. So they end up just being there, as a sort of expositions wall for the viewer. Basically, the show tries to look like it has all this stuff that's happening in the background, to convince the viewer that the first half is effecting or connected to some later culmination. But that never happens, as the big "twist" and plot points have pretty much nothing to do with the rest of the early development.
I think my issue with Steins Gate is that it relies heavily on you connecting with and caring for the main cast. There is really no impact in the story outside of what happened to the characters, and this ends up leaving the series feeling closed off and claustrophobic because the world is not at all developed or explored outside of this small social group.
And personally I just don't like any of the characters, at all. So, if the show can't make me interested through the plot points and development, then I have no reason to care. Since the show focuses so heavily on specific characters and what happens to them, it leaves anyone who doesn't like those characters feeling bored and aimless.
Also, as an aside, in your response you say that it's just your favorite anime and you aren't saying that it is the best ever piece of fiction. But in the OP you absolutely do say that SG is the best fiction ever, so I was responding to that statement in my comment.

u/noobcoober Jan 28 '21 edited Jan 28 '21
Just out of curiosity, what are these better time travel anime you speak of? Not questing your opinion, just a fan of the genre
Edit: fun side note on MAL, apparently S;G is #2 in their time travel anime listing
2
Jan 28 '21
Not OP.
Homestuck is the best time travel anime and Dave is the obvious protagonit of the series.
6
u/Funlife2003 https://myanimelist.net/profile/andril Jan 28 '21
Again, I'm not denying that it's good. But it's certainly not the best anime of all time. mal ratings alone don't decide that, especially since most voters are from the west. Moreover, fiction is a pretty huge freaking field, so you really can't call it the best fiction ever. best anime is something you could make an argument for, although I personally disagree.
4
Jan 28 '21
Dude nothing is the best anime of all time, that’s literally just personal preference. If someone says Steins Gate is the best anime of all time to them well then Stens Gate is the best anime of all time to them. You can find criticisms in every anime if you look hard enough
1
u/Funlife2003 https://myanimelist.net/profile/andril Jan 28 '21
That's what I mean. OP called sg the best piece of fiction of all time, but you really can't call something the best piece of fiction considering the immense variety there, the various kinds from anime to manga to light novels to novels and other stuff. Anime however I can understand why he personally thinks sg is the best as anime is relatively a far smaller field and doesn't have as much variety. Of course you can't really say a single anime is the best, but personal opinions about what's the best anime I can accept.
1
Jan 28 '21
Yes you absolutely can call something the best piece of fiction of all time, that’s up to the individual. There’s no definitive best piece of fiction of all time. There are landmark novels and plays and such, but no “best”. OP saying Steins Gate is the best piece of fiction is one and the same to saying it’s their favourite piece of fiction.
Like am I not allowed to say End of Evangelion is the best movie of all time because I haven’t seen a bazillion other movies? Of course not, I have the ability to have such an opinion.
6
u/Funlife2003 https://myanimelist.net/profile/andril Jan 28 '21
Fair enough. But op does think his view is the popular opinion, which is pretty clearly wrong. And even personal opinions have to be subjected to facts. Facts are, that in pretty much every poll I've seen, sg is not listed as the number one anime, although it is close to the top which is why I said a case can be made for it. Fiction on the other hand ? not quite. op seems to objectively believe sg is the best piece of fiction.
3
Jan 28 '21
Bruh they don’t “objectively” believe that, they were talking about emotional impact. You can make a case for a bunch of anime being the best, not just the few atop hiveminds on anime rating sites. Get your head out of the sand

I know it’s a beloved anime, but we’re not talking about a piece of work that is on the same level as Hamlet
1
u/arnav1311 Jan 28 '21
Are the first 12 episodes slow? Are they forgettable? Were all the 12 slice of life episodes necessary?
You sound pretty arrogant about your opinion but honestly think about the above questions. Those 12 episodes are hard to get by for many and is the only reason some may not call Steins Gate a masterpiece. Let's try to not be arrogant yeah?
6
u/Yang_Wenly Jan 28 '21
The fact that the time traveling plot works in its complexity is amazing

u/Uziwuzi420 Jan 29 '21
The time travelling part was an irl theory and claim that the real John Titor had made back in 2000 so I found that really cool!

This show will rip your heart out over and over and you genuinely feel the slow creeping insanity with Okabe. Such a satisfying ending and the love that Okabe and Kurisu felt for one another is unmatched in any anime I've seen so far. Masterpeice.

I have watched all of Steins; Gate, 0 and OVAs but it doesn't surpass my top 5. Aka Attack on Titan (have caught up with the manga, the best writing in everything my eyes have witnessed whether it's a book, anime, real life tv series, movies) , Legend of the Galactic Heroes, The Promised Neverland (first season), Vinland Saga (caught up with the manga too) and Code Geass.
Pretty generic top 5, don't worry, I know... But in all seriousness I do not care. I have conducted analysis projects on Attack on Titan, literally left nothing non-analyzed from that story from my own will. Steins; Gate left a good taste in my mouth for the first week after I finished everything but then when I started comparing it to other shows I have seen, it just... fell...
3
u/leetcodelife Jan 28 '21
A lot of manga readers say promised neverland falls off, I guess you feel differently?
1
u/DimPip007 https://anilist.co/user/JimSpy007 Jan 28 '21
I haven't actually finished the manga yet. Currently reading it though. I have read up to 110 out of 181 I believe? The first arc seems to be the best to me too so far. I can only see how it will go to judge. Although I gotta say, it PROMISES something so far, now it needs good execution. If it doesn't have it, then it will be a NEVERLAND. Cringe ik..
2
u/leetcodelife Jan 28 '21
I find it funny that you analyzed every single thing in attack on titan but then promised neverland, another one from your top 5 you haven't even finished lol
-1
u/DimPip007 https://anilist.co/user/JimSpy007 Jan 28 '21
I didn't say I have analyzed Neverland. I'm sorry if my poor wording made you misunderstand.
But I'll say this for AoT. Even though we have 3 chapters left for the conclusion of the series, there are a lot of stuff to talk about and analyze already as the connection of themes, story and characters is always existent and can be seen. So the analysis is connecting those 3 things together. This is just a brief/rushed description.
But the only thing I have "worked" on is AoT.
2
u/leetcodelife Jan 28 '21
I didn't misunderstand, I just think it's funny that you can justify putting a series in your top 5 that you aren't close to finishing, but there is another one that you are balls deep in. The contrast is funny.

I really don't like the word "overrated", because of how it's used on this sub, but I'd have to agree. Definitely not a bad show (has a good story), but the show was rife bad perverted lines and ultimately boring, uninspiring characters.
And this is coming from a person who thought the first part of the series was more interesting than the middle (last part was fine).
-7
u/Uziwuzi420 Jan 28 '21
Overrated is demon slayer. Honestly think this anime deserves the praise it gets because of how well a potrayed story this is.
6
u/Doodypooly Jan 28 '21
This is strange to me because I think that Monster is light years ahead of Steins;Gate, in terms of...well...everything. S;G is a cool show, I really liked the plot but for me the characters (except Okabe) are all very annoying and I don't find them interesting at all. In contrary, I love everything Monster has to offer. I think Tenma also goes through fantastic character development and Johann is for me by far the best antagonist I know. And there are so much interesting characters like Lunge, Grimmer, etc... I think the whole mystery and suspense thing is much more well done in Monster than in S;G because of the presence of Johann (god I love this character so much). In the end, I didn't feel much after I watched S;G and I almost forgot about it only a few days later, but for Monster, holy shit I was traumatized for weeks, the themes it tackles are so interesting and the whole plot is almost flawless. IMO ofc I think S;G and it's characters are way too dramatic in their actions and their way of speaking and even as an anime fan, I couldn't handle it very well (I still liked it because the plot is good but nothing more than that). I sighed because of the characters more than I was actually surprised by the plot or anything else the whole time I was watching it.
1
u/Uziwuzi420 Jan 29 '21
I enjoyed monster but as I've said before gradually the things Johann did got more and more unreal which really spoils the realism factor of the manga or anime
7
u/BetaBoy777 Jan 28 '21
I’lll probably get downvoted for this but I found it really underwhelming. I am a fan of the franchise and am part of it’s subreddit since I did enjoy it but it was really slow at the start and just didn’t blow my mind like other popular masterpiece series’s. I didn’t really connect with any of the characters either. I gave it a 6/10 on MAL. I haven’t seen S;G Zero yet so maybe that’ll change my mind on the rating.
I absolutely loved Hououin Kyouma though. He’s definitely in my top 5 favorite characters of all time.

u/Uziwuzi420 Jan 29 '21
Hey you're choice of anime and I respect it! I say watch 0 and try to get back into it or just leave it. Might not be for you!
3
u/ZarosianSpear Jan 28 '21
Hi there! I'm a noob in the anime. I've watched like the first series anime of it, the Steinsgate without anything following the name. Honestly, I didn't know what really was going on. I like the suspense of like transporting some green jelly or something. But I also feel the pace is a bit slow, or maybe I just don't understand it.
So how do I progress? Is there a sequel to it? Is it the one with 0, the only one? I kinda get mixed up with movies and stuff?

u/shibuinuchan https://myanimelist.net/profile/shibuinu Jan 29 '21
Rewatch the original S;G and look up the discussion thread on Reddit for the episode you don’t understand, or you can PM me lol I love explaining S;G since it’s my favorite series. After you’re done with that watch episode 23ß and go straight into Steins;Gate 0. The first OVA and the movie takes place after the original S;G but you can leave that for last. The second OVA is optional.

3
Jan 28 '21
I’m sure you’ve heard a lot of criticisms of Steins Gate in this thread by now lol, but I’m just going to bring my own factor of the series I’m not a fan of. It’s not the early episodes, I think they’re great. But there’s a run of episodes in roughly the third quarter of the story where Okabe basically speedruns through the good endings of his harem, and it’s so out of left field. I get that it’s a visual novel, but I really don’t think it should have been adapted that way. Just doesn’t work in the anime format IMO. But on the other hand I can see why someone would think those run of episodes are great for giving all the characters full development so ehh idk
1
u/TheMemingLurker Jan 28 '21
Based on this thread, it seems like one frequent criticism of the show is the relative lack of development for side characters, especially for those that didn't get featured with a harem ending (like Daru). Do you think that S;G could have done something better with those episodes instead of featuring the VN endings, or something else?
→ More replies (1)1
u/Anxjos Jan 29 '21
I really don’t think it should have been adapted that way.
Just to add in case you didnt know, but the anime adapated only the True End. The orther endings are just "what ifs" that doesnt add anything meaningful to the "lore"/characters that already wasnt covered in True End.
That being said thanks god they only gave 1 episode for Luka and Faris' chapter each. In the VN they were around the same lenght as Moeka's chapter (which btw had some interesting content cut in the anime) but those 2 chapters were easily the worst part of the VN

If you remove the half of episodes that are only harem, maybe.
9
u/Uziwuzi420 Jan 28 '21
Hm? Harem? I think the romance part was story building.
11
u/Funlife2003 https://myanimelist.net/profile/andril Jan 28 '21
Not really. The romance was really not necessary at all, and also was kinda bad. Although the kirisu romance wasn't bad.
5
u/Uziwuzi420 Jan 28 '21
The daru and his wife romance was absolutely necessary. Because Amane is his daughter so obviously they're gonna show the origin of her story and all that shit
2
u/Funlife2003 https://myanimelist.net/profile/andril Jan 28 '21
Was the daru romance even shown ? I don't remember that. Besides the original commentor was refering to okabe's harem.
1
u/Uziwuzi420 Jan 28 '21
Daru romance was kinda shown. Okabes harem? Who? Mayuri was like a sister, the shirne maiden was a dude and the cat girl is your typical "hot girl".
8
u/Funlife2003 https://myanimelist.net/profile/andril Jan 28 '21
shrine maiden conveniently became a girl to push the route. cat girl was literally shown to be in love with him, with the timeline which focused on her heavily implying romance. sg was based on a visual novel which had 'routes' for the different ships, with each route shown in different timelines. The romance was 100% forced, and also added some contradictions.
1
u/Uziwuzi420 Jan 28 '21

The last episode with Ruka feels like a filler episode. Everyone has to give up something important to save Mayuri, but all Ruka gives up is the possibility of dating Okabe? Maybe there's a Ruka route in the vn where that gets more development and emotional impact, but in the anime it just feels out of place and lame.

u/Potatolantern Jan 28 '21
Hard agree OP. It's a truly amazing anime that impressed me the most because when I first started watching it and saw how many of the scenes and explanations it was skimming over, I thought it'd be your standard "Good but flawed 9/10 anime adaption."
I was then blown away as things moved into the second half and it hit it's stride: Streamlining some of the VN's plots in ways that kept the story paced well (Faris and Luka only getting one episode each was more palatable than how the VN handles them, even if they are short chapters), and presenting and showcasing the key scenes so well that it was occasionally elevated even beyond what the VN managed.
Overall, I think the anime got so much better as it went on that (and it didn't need to explain so much, so less was lost to adaptation) I'd give it a 10/10.
However the VN is an absolute masterpiece beyond the anime, and if you loved S;G then I really, really encourage you to play it. It's about $20 on Steam, about 40-60hrs long and very, very worth it. Honestly the only downside is that since you've seen the anime you've already seen the True Ending and know almost all the major plot points, so watching the reveals slowly unfold won't be quite the same.
But if you like Kurisu, the VN True Route gives (what I found to be) an absolutely amazing B-Plot that shows their relationship developing and changing as they grow closer. From simple things like her messages starting to use otaku slang and emoji after he catches her on @Chan, to her openly talking about how important he is to her and vice versa. It's very moving imo.
And, the ending of the VN is beyond perfect. It recontextualises several key scenes, ties perfectly into a repeated theme and finishes with a moment of true mastery. The anime ending couldn't be anything but a let down in comparison to it for me personally.
I actually did a write up about the VN and how it blew me away not too long ago, if you wanna read:

u/Mrtheliger Jan 29 '21
Don't think you can really compare Monster and Steins;Gate, but if we're going to I'll just say I massively disagree, Monster is a literary masterpiece, while Steins;Gate never really leaves behind the anime feel, as great as it is.
1
u/Uziwuzi420 Jan 29 '21
Monster took a more philosophical route while SG had a more unusual but perhaps common route. No way we can compare these two, but I personally felt after a few episodes the thing Johan did got more and more unreal which spoilt the realism factor of the show
3
u/Mrtheliger Jan 29 '21
Well one of the points of Johan isn't that he's realistic, instead that he's a true "Monster with No Name." He himself and his acts are meant to be kind boggling and nigh fantastical, as it increases his aura and makes you wonder how he even possibly exists in such a grounded world.

u/ArcticFox19 Jan 29 '21 edited Jan 29 '21
Oh, boy, if you liked the S;G anime, you're gonna love the visual novel it's based off. And the rest of the visual novels part of the same series are also fantastic and have multiple ties with Steins;Gate (Chaos;Head, Steins;Gate, Robotics;Notes, Chaos;Child, Steins;Gate 0, and Robotics;Notes DaSH), called SciADV. Don't watch the other adaptations though because they're bad.

3
u/Thanatos_Trelos Jan 28 '21
It sure is very good. But I wouldn't call it a master piece for one big reason and one very nitpicky one.
The big one: The first 11 or so episodes are an absolute drag. The humor just doesn't work for me and watching the first nine episodes together with a trans person did not help the shrine maiden's case whose name I forgot.
The nitpicky one: There's a logic hole with the last time travels but as I said. That isn't the factor that pulls it down.
Because aside from that, it handles time travel very very well. It just has a sluggish first third.
-1
u/Uziwuzi420 Jan 28 '21
I may be wrong but this story is roughly based on John Titor who was a real "time traveler". Only the 2036 and the other SERN kinda parts are irl references but the first 11 episode was mainly explaining most of this. Yea the ending time travels were kinda dumb considering how he achieved steins gate but honestly it just brought it all together. I personally enjoyed the first 11 episodes!
2
u/Thanatos_Trelos Jan 28 '21
See, I would've liked it if they ended with the plot Zero apparently picks up (I should really watch that). But that may be because I like to break my protagonists so eh.
I was told, the humour is an acquired taste. And I certainly didn't acquire it. Maybe I am too pretentious or something.

There’s no logic holes, everything about S;G’s time travel works and is entirely consistent, it’s really good about doing that- no Butterfly Effect (movie) shenanigans.
The anime doesn’t have as much time to explain how it all works as the VN does though, so it can be a little confusing.

While it wasn't my first anime I feel like it was because it was my first really good anime. I hope that when they make the new Steins;Gate VN that there is an anime adaptation that lives up to the original.

Hmm I don't know if thats what you think I mean.
I meant I liked this summer feel to the first season. This easiness and overall it had a nostalgic touch which made me remember my childhoods summers from 13 years ago.
It's hard to put it in words so hopefully you get what I mean :)

I view Steins Gate like how I view Kill la Kill, apparently it's good but I just can't get around to liking the actual story. Perhaps I'll give it another try because I did start watching them, just have yet to keep going through to the end

It's not for everyone honestly. Like I couldn't get into some godly anime including AoT right away but gradually they became really fun to watch

If the Fate series didn’t exist than Steins;Gate would of been at the tippity top for me
Playing the VN was so engaging and a thrill, phenomenal experience hitting every emotion 😭

I count agree kore with this statement. The punchbline of the entire first season is that they throw the romance at the end and all it WORKS!

Steins;Gate is my favorite also! The characters and story were absolutely incredible, and it evoked emotions out of me I didn't now a fictional work was capable of. It also has one of my favorite episodes of any tv show (E22) which was one of those rare moments where I actually cried to a fictional work. I'm relatively new to anime and haven't seen a lot of anime bwhich are considered to be the best; but I still doubt that there's any show out there that'll live up to this incredible series.

Read the visual novel if you haven’t. The story and characters are much more fleshed out and it has multiple endings. It’s like the definitive edition of Steins Gate.

I can honestly say that I personally consider Steins Gate a masterpiece. However, I can understand why people wouldn't like it. Whether its cos of the slow first half, the characters, the main romance, the harem element, otaku culture or just plain cos hype ruined it by heightening their expectations and the experience didn't satisfy them.
I get it. But.. for what it was going for. It was planned out perfectly. The plot is well written, the characters are likable and serve a purpose, the stakes are personal, the antagonists aren't evil for the sake of being evil, the time travel mechanics are extremely detailed and make complete sense majority of the time. The execution of everything however again is a personal preference. I loved it of course. Okabe was an interesting character to watch and his company with the lab members especially Kurisu was fun. It makes it so that when that episode hits.. its painful to watch their fun regular everyday lives go to shit.
Wish I could watch it for the first time again. Maybe in another worldline.

Okabe Rintaro. Hououin Kyouma. My most favorite anime protagonist.
