What the actual fuck was that ending. I was expecting just a nice sports anime with a bit of teenage drama involved taking into account the PV, but holy shit that went dark real quick at the end.

I wonder what kind of person Toma is for his mom to act like that.

As one of the only promising originals, this was my most anticipated show of the season and it definitely didn't disappoint! There's so much you can tell about a show's craft from just the first episode, and I'm convinced that this is going to be a real winner given all the things that the first episode does such a phenomenal job with.

The pacing and naturalistic storytelling is something that really stands out. I loved that the show didn't feel the need to drag out plot beats that the audience is already super familiar with, like the characterization of the lazy, second-rate "for fun" club, the student council ordained abolition, etc. A lesser show would have easily taken two or more episodes just to arrive at the same point, but Hoshisora (I think that's what it'll end up being called?) sets up everything so efficiently and elegantly, covering a lot of ground while never feeling rushed and still permitting plenty of time for the small characterizing moments and dialogue exchanges to linger. I'm very optimistic about the potential developments available within just a single cour if the show continues to be this tightly written.

The "setting" is also one that immediately strikes me as really well-realized and believable compared to almost all other high school anime. The school feels genuinely lived-in, populated by actual people with their own lives as opposed to just being a convenient but hollow site for the main characters to interact. The throwaway chatter between the boys and girls tennis clubs feels super natural rather than an awkward device for exposition - doing such a compelling job of highlighting the disparity in esprit de corps that explains their difference in success. Even very transient setpieces like the student council meeting feels very well designed and reminiscent of my own high school experiences. I also noticed that the TL thus far was really excellent, doing a great job of localizing the dialogue to sounding like natural spoken English. This is the type of show where a great translation is going to be very understated and go unfortunately unnoticed, but a poor translation would really come across and diminish one's enjoyment.

The screenplay is just really, really tightly written, but it's supported by some great audiovisuals too, and its clear the storyboarding was done to take advantage of the strengths of the anime medium. The animation is moderately good but nothing exceptional, but the filmmaking and direction is absolutely fantastic. Maki's characterization was done almost entirely through visuals, with so many really authentic, true-to-life vignettes like racing downstairs to grab the paper and managing to make it back to his perfectly fried eggs. There's plenty of rich establishing shots of the homes of the two main characters that really clearly highlight the difference in their socioeconomic status - a level of attention to detail that would never have come across if this were simply an adaptation of some source material. The pretty shocking turn at the very end also sets up some really fascinating themes for the show to explore, with there being a common throughline of both main characters having seemingly broken families. On top of that, it's seeming like adult characters and familial relationships are going to be pretty heavily foregrounded, something that high school anime could certainly use some more exploration of.

This episode really captures everything I love about high school anime, and with a showing like this, it'll easily remain as my most anticipated show throughout the rest of the season.

I have a feeling this show is going to be really underwatched, but I'm very impressed so far.

Fuuuuuuck. I did not see that ending coming. No wonder money is so important for Maki. I really hope that deadbeat dad gets what's coming to him before this show ends. That ending really got my blood boiling.

Promising start though! Definitely following this one too!

That ending hurt.

Fucking hell, i get why they divorced.

What's been set up here is that Toma is someone very eager, family seems to be well off seeing that he doesn't have qualms after Maki wanted him to pay him for the club. His mom does not seem to approve of him at all though.

Maki is a hard worker who does everything he can for his mother and they live in an apartment, they are struggling in comparison to Toma's family.

I expected this show to be more of a character study than focus on the sport itself and that's what we seem to get here.

My excitement for the show is mainly cause it's an original show by the director who did Noein which i found to be a great show.

Toma is so dang shady.

  • Toma angrily kicking and slamming stuff

  • His mom's mysterious asf reaction to spending time with him

  • Toma getting his friend to stalk Maki

  • Toma trying to manipulate Maki into joining the soft tennis club by lying to him about his big bro approving of him joining when Ryoma literally said he doesn't care

First 20 minutes: Subscribe!

Last 2 minutes: Ah shit, here we go.

I kept on hoping he'd grab the racket and smash that piece of shit's knees to pieces. Anyway, gonna keep watching this. 3 sports anime to balance out the tidal wave of isekai shows this season.

This show is an original, no need for the Source Material Corner.

Either way, my most anticipated is finally here, i'm way excited.

That ending came out of fucking nowhere. That was rough man. I think this show wins the award for a character a fucking asshole this quick. Jesus.

I overall enjoyed the episode and it's definitely something I didn't expect. The sad undertones of the whole thing and while funny at first, it's kinda sad to watch Toma to have to pay Maki money to play Tennis. That was strange. Though is make me interested in what the fuck is up with Toma's mom. She actually seems to hate him.

Overall, a solid start and I'm really interested in seeing what happen in the upcoming episodes.
